    I lived near a pond as a kid, and my job was to go outside with the dog and scare the canada geese off the lawn. They could visit our yard and eat all the grass they wanted, but we never let them settle there and start nesting because they would get super hostile defending their territory and would attack my toddler sister on sight (she is 30 and still hates geese).

    Hi, have you considered setting up laying boxes/spots for the geese in the hoophouse? You know… so it’s little more organized and convenient for you and not such a huge mess as it was last year :P

  • @thesadgardener
    @thesadgardener 2 роки тому +76

    The fact that Ginny attacked Toby means she IS afraid of him, not that she is fearless. Usually the smaller, more vulnerable animals are more aggressive because they feel threatened. Also, I bet she is pissing in there because the litter is soft to scratch around in, and everything is too frozen outside for her to scratch. Cats have a, like, 4 step process for shitting involving 2 sets of scratching.

      She's peeing, not shitting. Would help if you knew what cats are & what they do before talking. Ginny is likely peeing in the goose/chicken house because of the straw & grain/feed will attract rats and mice. Rats and mice are prey animals. Prey animals are not stupid. When they scent a predatory animal - aka a cat - they are more prone to ignoring that area.

    • @thesadgardener

      @@gingerbaker4579 no need to be rude. Recently I was given a science based cat care (as in based on a peer reviewed scientific study) informational packet by my vet. I have a strong interest in animal care, and I have 2 cats. I can't imagine a cat enjoying using the bathroom (any form, no need to split hairs) on a sheet of ice regardless. Morgan likes to anthropomorphize his animals, rather than looking for a scientific explanation for their behavior, he looks for one within his own understanding of human behavior. It's really common for animal owners. But science based care is the best care. I bet if he offered outdoor litter boxes for the barn cats, they would use them. And also would be helpful for Pablo when he is let back outside

      @@thesadgardener ROFL. First off you have two cats & don't know the difference between squatting to do poop & kneeling to urinate??? ROFL. Btw do you think feral cats have outdoor litter boxes around every corner? And there's no "sheet of ice". There's predominantly snow for her to do her business in. As any outdoor cat does.

    • @queentophat225
      @queentophat225 2 роки тому +8

      @@gingerbaker4579 Owning 2 cats myself (indoor/outdoor) Squatting to do their business is still squatting. Outdoor cats will always prefer a softer area to do business. Under trees (where snow is far less likely to fall) or in sandy areas are best. Yes, there is plenty of snow for her to use as cover. However, any animal given the chance would choose the moss, spodosol, or straw found in these areas as it would be easier to dig up and later rebury after they're done. Open snow would be more dangerous as it would leave tracks for predatory animals to track them with.

    We've got a pair of Sebastopol geese and they started recently too. I closed in 3/4 of the bottom of the chicken coop, threw some bedding down and she is now sitting on 7-8 eggs. The male keeps guard and will come hissing at you and if you're not watching, will nip at your feet. He hates the feed scoop to the point that we've had to basically hide it from him so he's not attacking it 24/7. We usually trade or give the eggs away but she did decent last year, and her setup this year is way better and no rodents etc can get to them.

    We here in the south have two geese nesting and six ganders. The good news is that the ganders may be able to keep the usual predators away. The bad news is that the ganders are very aggressive to us, so we put up a cross fence to keep them out of our walk area to the goat barn. That was very good news until Napoleon and General Patton flew over a low spot in the fence using a back wind. After I fought my way out to go process the milk, I opened a place in the fence and ran them out with the other boys. No, I will not be keeping that many ganders. I expect there will be a few goose dinners this summer somewhere.

    I'm not entirely sure about the black cow but the others are all asymmetrically "fat" which in cows is a pretty clear sign of pregnancy.
    How cold does it get at night in Vermont in mid-May? The cows will be fine out on the pasture giving birth but if it is near freezing and windy the calves might need some shelter.
    I really recommend getting the cows away from that mud and dung situation before it happens. That is precisely what can mess up their hooves and you do not want that.

      A soft wet hoof becomes an ideal place for some of those bacteria, mold and fungi to grow. The hoof can get all kinds of infections or just break down from being soft and having so much weight on it all the time. If a cow goes down in mud it can be very hard to get it up again.
      In the best case you have to bring out a farrier to clean up and repair the hoof. In the worst case you have to put down the animal and "downer" animals cannot be slaughtered for food. so having this happen can be a massive loss for a small operation.

    Regarding the muddy mess in the barn. Maybe start laying down sawdust and/or wood chips now BEFORE it starts to melt. Then maybe some older dirty straw as it does melt. Soaking it up, and taking it out before it becomes a mess. I would just shovel the thawing soil right in a wheel barrel and go straight to the compost heap with it. Or have a neighbor pick it up for their heap. Will make a divity(sp?) hole, but you should be able to fill it in with any clean dirt (I would invest in a sq yard of gravel) and level it out.

      And it's terrible for animal feet and the environment. So far from a good idea, and even less so at a farm with lots of animals.

    I wonder if Ginny riding on your shoulder is a dominance move as well. Sure looked like it when she made the move on Toby from your shoulder. It will be interesting to see how she reacts to the puppy.

      She considers Morgan her human companion or possession..he belongs to her. Toby getting close like that and her scratching him is because she is jealous of him invading her space and time with Morgan.Even though Toby was there first.. . Plus Ginny is a super affectionate cat and loves and needs her attention from her human.. Toby in her mind, was honing in on her time with her Morgan.Our cat Georgy Girl did the same thing if any of the other cats came too close while she was with my late husband. Even though all of our cats are related ,including her two sons. We used to joke about it and call her his second wife.

    I both love and hate goose mating season. I have 18 Sebastopols and they go from being the sweetest babies to complete jerks. But, it gives me the chance to crack out the incubators and baby goose cuddles. 🥰

    At time = 4:33 - Actually, Morgan, toilet trained cats are incredibly clean animals. The cat litter industry doesn't want you to know how readily cats will take to using the human toilet. There are many, many reasons why there's nothing like a toilet trained cat!

      But do they replace the roll when it's empty?

    • @ElmerCat
      @ElmerCat 2 роки тому

      @@bige.3474 No, my Henry doesn't do that. The question I get more often is: "Does he flush?" -
      - I considered teaching him to flush; I've seen other cats do it and I know Henry could have learned; but then I thought: do I really want to give the cat that much power? and decided against it. He might try flushing a toy down the toilet, but more importantly it allows me to keep an eye on how he's doing. Years ago, Henry had urinary trouble similar to what Pablo Barncat is going through right now. I noticed immediately, and took him to the vet right away. There are just so many reasons to toilet train your cat!

      It can be painful for them to use the toilet when they grow old actually.
      Young cats are easy to toilet train and they have no issues using the toilet but when they grow old they usually are unable to use it properly because of arthritis issues etc.

    • @ElmerCat
      @ElmerCat 2 роки тому +1

      @@theodoramina4142 That can be said for all of us! Fortunately, though I am 66 and my Henry is 13, we are both spry enough to have no problems with that.
      Nonetheless, it's not something I take for granted. There's always the possibility there may come a day when Henry will need to use a litter box and/or I may need to wear Depends.
      Meanwhile, we are both very happy to have and be able to use a toilet which flushes clean after use. A litterbox or diaper just isn't the same, no matter how often you change it.
