Paul Williams you are amazing. I feel so honored that you actually called me to thank me for saying nice things about you! I'm just very sad that I wasn't able to answer the phone. But your message was awesome. I hope your wife doesn't get jealous but I've been in love with you since the '70s 😊
Paul is so much more than a songwriter/composer. A true entertainer. I love hearing the stories, the quick wit. He always puts a smile on my heart in all he does.
I could listen to him sing and play all day long. His sound captured in the 1970s what only the greats in modern history have managed -the soundtrack of a generation. Thank you, "Swan"! Thank you Paul! Your words and music will always be "Still Alive" in my heart and wherever people appreciate timeless remnants of a beautiful soul.
I went my whole life not knowing about the original version of this song, came across it a couple of years ago. Karen was an angel singing it is no exaggeration, I agree, but when I heard that first Paul Williams (w/ Roger Nichols' music) version it was a revelation -- the depth, the poetry, the presence. So beautifully original and haunting. I've listened to it a hundred times since.
It's awesome to see the real Paul Williams playing and singing on piano for his very best tune.He is regarded as God for soft sounding music. Thanks from Japan for posting this wonderful live video.
Paul wrote a beautiful song for a movie my dad produced in 1976. The song was called Time and Tide from the movie "LIFEGUARD" starring an unknown actor at the time named Sam Elliott.
What an incredibly underrated movie that is. I saw it as a 16-year-old in 1976. I hope I’m not the only one who thinks this, but that was Sam Elliot’s best work in my opinion. Kudos to your Dad, he did a wonderful job with that movie!
This song always makes me tear up... and even more so when he sings it. It reminds me of my dreams...all the things I wanted and the hope of a bright and happy future...
Paul missed his opportunity to credit Richard for hearing it in a bank commercial, recognizing its potential, and arranging/orchestrating the perfect version, which, notably, kept many people from committing suicide. Kudos to BOTH Carpenters!
Saw Paul in concert near U.C. Berkeley in the mid-70's. The concert was great and he had a orchestra backing with a string section. He told the audience he would be on the Tonight Show the next day so I tuned in and sure enough there he was!!!
High school graduation song in 1990 here in manila when i was in college i learned that every lyrics of this song are all true.thanks 4 making this song
Paul Williams wrote two of the most famous weddings songs I still hear today -- "We've Only Just Begun" and "Evergreen." Personally, my two most favorite songs of his are "I Won't Last a Day Without You" and "Answer Me."
Every time I hear another version of this I get something new from it. I just saw the original bank commercial that premiered this wonderful song and teared up a little. Wow, like Paul said, from the heart. As a musician Paul's advice puts me back in the right frame of mind. True genius.
Holy shit, to see this in an such an intimate setting... one of my earliest memories is having a little music box that played this song and my mom singing it to me as she tucked me into bed...
Real nice video. Williams and Roger Nichols also wrote several other Carpenters hits sung by that "angel" (Karen Carpenter), including "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "I Won't Last a Day without You."
Wow, I googled Paul, I read he was 79. Then I saw he passed away in '73! How did I not know that?? I had the biggest crush on him as a young teen. He was so very talented. Can't wait to watch the documentary! Rest in peace Paul Williams ❤
No Idea but I'm sure it must be a lot! I tried to get my daughter to play it at her wedding but unfortunately she thought it was too old fashioned. So beautiful though!
Like BB King-one note full of feeling is worth the last 2 generations of notes from guitars. One authentic vocal sound-well, students of singing can learn a thing or two.
Its a shame that young people these days (lol, I am old, I guess) will never get to experience such a pure, honest songwriter. I remember running home to see Paul on the Mike Douglas show, too naive to know that this great man was stoned out of his mind. I love him so much. SWAN! SWAN! SWAN! If you get a chance, watch Paul Williams : Still Alive. It brings together two of my favourite things: Paul Williams and the Philippines. Mr. Williams is basically a God in the music industry. Think I'm spewing hyperbole? No... www.ascap.com/about-us/governance/williams-bio
Loved The Carpenters! Leon Russell was another great writer that Karen was blessed to record. A Song For You is one of my favorites. Thank you Paul Williams for sharing your ❤️ with all of us!
Leon Russell. Such a great talent as well. I remember watching Leon on The Midnight Special. WOWZA. Such little talent today. Sad. Paul Williams. So special!!!!
@Paul Williams I looked again and saw your alive and well in 2020 Glad to hear that. Far as private conversation. Im very shy. When is your next Podcast or link which we can say hello like this :) Do you have a official website i can sub to this one is blank.
@Paul Williams that would be difficult because everyone will see it here. Send me yours it would be much easier :) Or I can attend one of your podcast if you let me know when it is :)
“And then a angel sang it and changed my life.” 🙏🏽😞
Right. And he’s been going to the mailbox ever since.
Karen Carpenter
He has contributed so much over the years. Amazing songs and hysterical acting!
Carl Weathers?

richard’s sister did sing it.
like everything else she touched…
she made us remember what it is all about😊
How humble, "All my songs are Hallmark cards." His songs are some of the best parts of us all.
"Karen Carpenter, this is for you lady, God bless you". A class act.

I cannot get enough of the piano playing. So heavenly.

I Love LOVE Paul..... this man is so underrated it makes me ill.
vapo trail I know. The question is WHY?
He’s a genius
I agree.
I can't imagine his heartache when Karen passed.
Such a genius.
Those days are remembered by these magnificent, sentimental songs.
This makes me want to cry.
Saw Paul in concert near U.C. Berkeley in the mid-70's. The concert was great and he had a orchestra backing with a string section. He told the audience he would be on the Tonight Show the next day so I tuned in and sure enough there he was!!!
Beautiful! I've always loved both Paul and Karen. Two geniuses. Plus Paul is already angel-sized!
Have loved this man and his music since the first time I heard him .. in the 70's. ❤️🎶
One of my most favorite songs. Makes my heart feel good.
Same here, all the time this song makes me feel great
Paul is one of the greatest talents.
The angel he was referring to was the great Karen Carpenter!
High school graduation song in 1990 here in manila when i was in college i learned that every lyrics of this song are all true.thanks 4 making this song

The best bridge in any song ever. Truly beautiful.

great stuff man, thanks for sharing......just an old fashioned love song......this guy is one of the great American songwriters
DAVID CASTELLI l think Adam and Eve used it.
His version is amazing and so poignant. I love Karen’s because it’s the quintessential Carpenters song.
this is song 45 years later still makes me quiver
Now it's 50yrs.. and still the title is We've only just begun..
Hey Paul. That was soulful thanks to you !
R.I.P Karen. We still miss you.
Pure and Beautiful. A great Lesson. Never doubt yourself. Try harder and one day your dreams will come true.

We are going to Nashville, May 27-28, 2014. I hope to see you there!!!
i'm so glad he said that.
Any guesses as to how many wedding receptions have featured this as first dance for the newlyweds?
No Idea but I'm sure it must be a lot! I tried to get my daughter to play it at her wedding but unfortunately she thought it was too old fashioned. So beautiful though!
Joann Smith Too bad you didn’t teach her what a classic is since they survive the test of time and hold value, a good lesson.
@@joannsmith150 old fashioned? it is a classic. So she decided to twerk at her wedding instead I assume?
Divorce attorneys love this song!
Nice relaxed delivery backed up by a great piano player .
No one will ever be as good as Karen Carpenter
His talent is missing these days,i think its called melody?Humble is good, super to see hes so well, thanks for all those songs!

Paul Williams. So special!!!!
Very Willie Nelson I must say
I hear that
I could actually hear Glenn Campbell and Willie Nelson
GENIAL PAUL! TE ADORAMOS! Y A TRACEY!
My favorite by him is So Many People which was his debut single.
love it
Chorando de amor, Paul!
Better than David Bowie, Paul your songs are heartfelt and timeless!
@Paul Williams
Your are more than welcome! Thanks for your personal touch here on YT! ☺️
hermoso recuerdos paul
I think the piano player surprised Paul by playing the song in G flat. The bank commercial is in E and he cut a version in F.
Just wandering... Wouldn't it be great if this song from an ad were sung by an angel voiced singer..such as Karen Carpenter ;)
What about his musican partner, Roger Nichols. that created the mystery and all the wonderful chord changes that make this song..
Cant wait til Daft Punk releases the single with him!
the legend
Didn’t the carpenters do a version of this??🤔
Would you please consider writing a song.. for this girl... on you tube. Corrine Lucy.
still have a crush on ya paul
@Paul Williams Your a fine actor, song writer, singer , never had the pleasure of meeting you. I envy those who have Plus you're still a cutie.
