I cannot thank you enough for doing this interview and introducing me to James' book Color & Light. I recently purchased it based on your recommendation, and FINALLY it all makes sense. One more piece to the puzzle. I'm excited to see where this new information will take me on my artistic journey!
Whenever I am asked to name artists that have influenced me, James Gurney is at the top of the list. He can draw and paint anything that's in front of him. I want to be able to do that! I own many of his books, including, "The Artists guide to Sketching". Have reread his books many times and always learn something from them. Thanks for doing this interview. JG is a gracious man and so generous with his knowledge. He is a 21st century master.
I think the questions were awesome in this interview. Obviously knew a. It about the artist and also let him answer in his own words. I’m humbled by his painting abilities. This is my fist time hearing about this artist and I will look up more. Thank you for a creative interview
Such a great episode! UA-cam just autoplayed to it or I never would have clicked it (I am terribly unsophisticated to the art world). But I found this to be a really fun conversation to observe, and I have learned so much. I have a stereotypical impression of art world as stuffy and haughty, but folks like this make me feel so much less intimidated and more at ease with experimenting. Thanks again for such an accessible vlog!
I was humbled by his lucidity and ability to absorb and reflect back on every element of his being, his gestalt if you will. He gives us the whole of who he is as a person, a partner, an observer, a scientist, teacher and philosopher. His sketch book is a treatise on how he's been affected and influenced by the actions and dynamics of everyone and everything around him, and they him. James possesses the rare ability to understand and be able to communicate one's feelings and emotions and do it effortlessly. He's genuine. He's what good writing and great art are all about.
Steve Thanks for the James Gurney interview with Marty and Steve. It sure made my Sunday afternoon listening to fellow artists. I consider your UA-cam channel and work to be my source of learning of art and much more. Peace, Catherine
Love this! I grew up in Dutchess County NY & now live in Ulster. Loved seeing so many familiar places painted by James Gurney. What a gift to the world all 3 of you are. I'm learning so much! .....starting painting at 65. NEVER TOO LATE! Cheers and Gratitude!
@44:20 that blew my mind. I was so fascinated with that street and how you were painting it, to suddenly see the cars go by and the man move… that was brilliant. It felt like I was there
Partnering for these interviews is a huge joy for me Steve. Having a guy like you who understands painting and illustration so deeply brings the viewer to a much deeper level of understanding (and me). Thanks for teaming up and here's to many more in the years to come. This was tremendous fun my friend. THANK YOU!!!!
My favorite of your videos yet. I’m listening while drawing and painting cactus flowers with a fountain pen (first time) and hot press paper. What a mess! From train hopping to painting supermarket doors. This is great stuff!
I loved this conversation with James Gurney. I remember when Dinotopia was first published and how many we sold at the book store where I was the children's buyer. He is an amazing artist, and this was wonderful to get to hear the three of you together. I also enjoyed his wife's art as well. What a splendid and lovely time spent and many tips learned. Thanks Steve and Marty!!!
Thanks to all for this fun and informative video. It was interesting to also hear about the history of the color wheel, and I enjoyed seeing the various paintings.
First the personal dialogues were instructional and magnificent! But second the James Gurney videos are a SAVE for fun and looking over and over to watch his lifelong experience of his art. Thankful ya’ll put this together. BE WELL.
That was so wonderful! James Gurney is a fantastic teacher, I watch everyone of his videos. Steve, you also are one of the best watercolor teachers on the Internet. Marty, I am not familiar with you, but, you asked the best questions. I never would have thought of them, but wondered about them later. Thank you guys!
Thanks for this interview! I came across James's videos a year ago and it has enraptured me with the immense beauty and simplicity of his sketchbook paintings
Wow!!! I knew you were amazing but I had no idea about your contribution to art. Paradigm shift in art! Yes - 🙏🏼 thank you for sharing your knowledge on UA-cam. Love all the stories behind the scene.
So glad you came out with this this week. It took the sting out of a really tough week. James Gurney is my favorite & I always love hearing from him & learning more. Steve, I would have liked to hear more from you, too. Awesome guys. Awesome!
What a great interview, I’m a huge admirer of James Gurney, I’ve been following his UA-cam channel for so long, it’s definitely one of the best and most inspirational art channels, I absolutely love his work, such talent, and yet he’s such a humble person. Thank you very much for this
This was a great interview, I've enjoyed Mr. Gurney's YT channel tremendously. Thanks so much for this video. Please do another interview if he has time..
Wonderful video. I first became enamored of Gurney's work as a kid when, you guessed it, I found Dinotopia in our local library. Now I'm 33 and have my own copies of the books and they still fill me with wonder. I love his work and it was fantastic to watch this and gain some insights into his history and process.
Thanks for this wonderful interview. So enjoyed watching these artists work unfold before my eyes. I can so relate to James talking about art as a young man to escape the conflict in his home. ❤️❤️❤️
Amazing interview with the three of you together! I look forward to new videos when you post. I have learned so much from Steve and James ,,,thank you!
Great interview! Love how he and his wife share art and getting others perspective on his art ( dog show people viewing dog portraits and sketches etc ) Thanks!
I love James so much! The fact he does anlot of Upstate New York plein airs really makes me exicted because I also live in Upstate NY so seeing it in a painting is amazing!
What a great interview ! Love James Gurney's work. Such a treat to listen and look into his art. Truly an amazing artist ! Very interesting stories and great info about him and Kinkade. Thanks to all 3 of you artists ! 💗
Absolutely LOVED the visual demonstrations as you guys talked about so many different facets of creating art. It's one of the very best productions I've seen on YT. Bravo, gentlemen!
This has been such an amazing hour for me personally. Thank you Marty and Steve for this interview with Mr. Gurney. I was just mesmerized listening to him, and watching him paint.
Thank you so much for doing this interview! I’ve followed James for a while now so it’s such a treat to watch this interview. You asked some great questions, and I learned a lot. Thank you :)
Thank you for sharing this. I throughly enjoyed watching and listening to each of you. I found James Gurney very interesting and will look for more from him. Well done.
That was very interesting listening to 3 favourite artists at the same time. Thank you and please do more like these. Very informative, lots of take away nuggets. Thank you for the love of art. Stay safe and God Bless you all.
Thanks for that interview. I usually watch such things about 30 seconds but this time I watched the entire thing over a few days as I found the time. Never heard of James Gurney (or Marty for that matter). Fascinating guy. Subscribed to both. 👍👍👍
Glad to see Marty and You doing these again and with one of my favorite artist. Didn’t know you were a big fan. Didn’t know is was into water media now and a you tube channel which I’ll catch. Knew is older work and of course his Dino books which my kids grew up on. Steve, you said you were branching out this year and you really have. Thank you for all the new styles and different ways to use water media! Thank you two guys for everything you do,please don’t stop inspiring! One last thank you to WetPaint for doing a second run on your DS pallet. Managed to get one this time. Your right, you can never stop learning or being surprised by watercolor,it’s a never journey. Thanks for inspiring me not to give up,even due to some physical limitations!
The stars aligned, it's a cosmic wonder ... yesterday, at my pharmacy of all places, someone placed a stack of gently used books. I was soon flipping through a book about a world where humans and dinosaurs coexist and I found the illustrations to be both beautiful and incredibly accurate. I paid for "Dinotopia, Journey to Chandara" and soon I was amazed to find this artist spotlight on your channel - with the talented James Gurney! Funny how life flows! I enjoyed this so much, especially the stories about his travels and friendship with the late, Thomas Kinkade. Thank you, it is a wonderful interview.
Thanks Cassie! I too found a Dinotopia book years ago in a used pile for about $5. He's an awesome artist but Marty nailed it when he mentioned Gurney's childlike fascination with literally everything. He's like a 10 year old in a 60+ body.
Thank you for this interview, Steve and Marty. What an inspiration to watch James Gurney. You really pulled a lot of gems out of him with your questions. (And I need to look up that quote at 45:55 Steve. Maybe put it in the video comments?) I could have listened for another hour! James just got a new fan. VERY bummed about Dover. 😢 Come on everybody, let’s buy some books!!
So many insights and hints and ideas in this 3-way interview! I’ll need to watch it several more times, after I look into James Gurney’s work, to absorb even 25% of the gold in it. Many thanks to the three of you, and I hope that you do more “artist spotlights” like this in the future.
Great Interview. Liked the visuals to go with the dialogue. Nice to see Steve and Marty in the saddle again, hope to see you do more. James is a very interesting guy. I'm putting a notation in my calendar for next June/July to look for #2 in your James Gurney Artist Series of interviews. Thanks.
For anyone that strives to be a good artist; this VIDEO is priceless! t hanks to everyone involved in making it. James Gurney is a living Norman Rockwell! Theres a song that was recorded by the late Johnny Cash, called "Songs that make a differance! James Guernys art work makes a differance! "Inspires, intertaines, and leaves us with, a new way of seeing things!
What an hour of power great conversation. Its a conversation that can be watched n listen too several times wonderful content in that chat! Thank you Steve n Marty. Huge thanks to James G as well
Worked at my county library for many years. Can’t tell you how many times I reshelved Dinotopia! One of the most popular books in our collection. The illustrations really stood out for me. So nice to see this interview and “ meet” the author. Such an interesting interview!! James and his wife seem so nice also! Love their watercolor!
The part about the supermarket door reminded me of a Brasilian painter called Rodrigo Yudi Honda, he paints typically common buildings and objects from Brazil (my country). They're things no one normally thinks of painting, but we can relate to them, they're familiar to us and can either be nostalgic too. There is a poetic language to the ordinary urban modern life. These days, they can touch us in a way that landscapes we can never see but on the computer or on vacation, can't do. This is our world. Our life. An artist taking a careful look and carefully portraying such things touch us and inspire us to really look at the things around us. Anyway, long babbling over, this was an amazing interview! I admire both your channel and James Gurneys. And I'm glad to have met Marty, so I now can check his channel too!
I've been a big Gurney fan for years, but had no idea he once traveled with Kinkade. It's certainly a blessing that his family can reminisce about their loved one with gentle souls like the Gurneys. With time, I hope more people will remember Mr. Kinkade in a favorable light, instead of the ugliness and scandal of the final years. He was not the first artist to lose his way. This makes me appreciate Mr. and Mrs. Gurney's kindness to Kinkade's daughter all the more.
Man O Man did I enjoy this! All 3 of these guys inspire me & my art. Steve has a great video on quash which I mentioned James in a comment. Steve actually commented back which I enjoyed.
I sure loved hearing about James and his wife's going outside and painting. James sounds like a character, like my grandfather. My grandfather was an Art teacher and Head of the Art Department at Sana Monica College. Stanley Gerome de Rollin. He went by the name of Chick. Just loved this chat. Thank you so much
I thought Gurney's comments about considering some people perceive visuals more tonally vs more via lines; and also about the research on how people see "less with their eyes" (paraphrased) and considerably with their brains was super interesting... great interview
Did a book report on Dinotopia in elementary school. We had to create our own book cover as the cover of our report and I remember being very proud of what I created. It's a little surreal being in my 30's and coming across James again here on youtube of all places. Excellent interview!! Very nice to listen to as I tidy my home. I want to also note after hearing that last bit of the interview, as someone creating art because I love it but wanting so badly to move to art as a career; It's good to hear an optimistic spin on the high saturation of artists out there.
SOOOOOO GOOD ..... the BASIC LOVE of art is the most important quality for a good artist ... when I was doing it for groceries, it always was inferior to the stuff I did for simple pleasure ...
i am one of those artists that do it for the love of nature and creation.i would love to get into galleries but i am just trying to paint realistic roses and birds ,im 61 and it will probably take the rest of my life to get it perfect in ,y eyes but that is what is so great about painting is it is a life time of work to do as well as mother nature did
Is that Reese's cousin in James Gurney's studio? I'm spending the afternoon binding paper for my travel sketchbook and for gifts and was looking for something fun and inspiring to watch and listen to. I am so HAPPY this popped up. Thank you for this video!
It is clear you both gave a lot of thought and did your research before speaking to him. Made for an engaging and thought provoking interview! Wonderful!
Hey thanks for noticing that Katherine. I spent a month researching Mr. Gurney and his work, and Steve have been following him for years. Steve was the one who told me about James.
Hey Steve, I truly enjoyed this interview, Mr. Gurney gave some great advice especially for me as upcoming artist and UA-camr. Enjoyed the questions that yourself and Marty asked. It was just a nice relaxing time for me. Listening to this interview and colouring with watercolour pencils on a piece a did earlier in the morning.
What a great interview! I've dabbled with gouache but after seeing James' work and especially the en plein air sketches...I know where I'm headed for some practice. Thanks all three of you!
Okay Marty and Steve, I have hoped you all would do another interview soon. James Gurney, you guys rock! I was very sorry when James said Dover Publications business may be shutting down. (I love my books from him.)Thanks all three of you had time to get together for this video, one we can watch several times and learn a lot for sure. Happy July 4th to all.
Gurney still got that childlike luminous wisdom that most people lose when they’re stil teenagers, thanks James for sharing with us.
Agreed! The same goes for his curiosity and sense of wonder.
I cannot thank you enough for doing this interview and introducing me to James' book Color & Light. I recently purchased it based on your recommendation, and FINALLY it all makes sense. One more piece to the puzzle. I'm excited to see where this new information will take me on my artistic journey!

Hi Mary - And if you met him on the street, you'd never know. He's soooo humble.

Great inspiration!
This was so interesting!
I remember reading about Thomas Kinkade travelling and painting with another person when he was younger- never knew it was James Gurney. Now I know.
44:15 Whoa...... that was wild, the painting came to life!! I love that!! I have no idea how he did it, but it shows how realistic it is.
This is excellent fun!
James Gurney is my favorite! Nice interview, fellas.
What a great interview! I've dabbled with gouache but after seeing James' work and especially the en plein air sketches...I know where I'm headed for some practice. Thanks all three of you!
Totally agree!
James Gurney did (a lot of) the backgrounds of "Fire and Ice" ? I love that movie ! Thanks for sharing !
He and Thomas Kinkade worked on the movie together, mostly doing backgrounds.
Happy 4th Essie!
