Improving Playable Zelda

  • Despite one of the most popular and influential series in the history of video games being NAMED after her, Princess Zelda has spent the last 3 decades in the shadows of her fellow Triforce wielders. A powerful wielder of the Triforce of Wisdom who shows her power by... surrendering to monsters... and... getting captured... repeatedly.
Which, of course, you can't have a supporting character stealing the spotlight from the player, that's not good game design! But that doesn't mean that Zelda has to constantly waste her potential! These spin-off appearances just don't cut it, so get on with it Nintendo, just make her playable!!!
May 2020 Retrospective Edit: I've been putting these little edits on all of my first season of content, but where most of them I've been cringing at mistakes or talking about how I could've done something better... I can't do that here. I'm still so goddamn happy about how this turned out. It was so fun to make and an absolute delight to see people's reactions too. Apart from a surprisingly necessary philosophy lesson about the differences between intelligence and wisdom, I don't feel a need to change anything here. 12/10, still my favorite video I've made.
I talk more about my current views of this video here: • Royal Retrospective: T...

Copy-pasting and pinning this on all older videos as I'm making them public again: When I was younger I fell pretty hard into that sort of "Oh yeah, I'm leading an internet community, I'm the superstar that knows best so everyone follow me!" which, looking back I'm not especially fond of, it's a very parasocial attitude. I don't think there was any one, super glaring issue, more of a "Death of a thousand cuts" that make me cringe looking back. A series putting forth my ideas as factually "Improving" them, constantly setting my viewers as my "Subjects" in often belittling ways, taking on a tone as if I'm speaking one-to-one with a viewer instead of presenting to a large audience, that sort of thing. And I regret now, it wasn't the healthiest atmosphere for myself or my viewers to foster. So, I just wanted to throw up this "Disclaimer" on all these, as while I don't dislike them enough to throw away years of editing work into a dusty attic, I do feel like a commentary on the 'vibes' I had in the past was necessary.
Also to obviously explain the lack of Twitter/Twitch/Discord/Whatever-Else-I-Advertised-In-These-Videos. Trying to keep up a social media rots the brain and I have long since left that behind, I do NOT want that strife in my life!
    Especially Twitter. Twitter is garbage.

A theme you're forgetting is that every Link builds his way to having a balance of power, wisdom and courage. Every Link starts with nothing but courage but acquires the other two over the quest (why do you think we have to solve so many puzzles as Link?)
Zelda could start with the wisdom to solve a problem but would need to acquire the power to do so and the courage. Having to overcome fear and be courageous like Link would make an interesting character arc.

    • @nousername191
      @nousername191 5 років тому +29

@Noblesse Obligee I've heard some people theorize that WW Ganondorf was going for that when he reflected on the reasons for what he did. I don't know how he would acquire courage, that involves conquering your fears, whatever they may be but yes, all the Links and most of the Zeldas (I'm sorry but some did absolutely nothing) do end the game with the right balance.

While thats true talking about the new game she'll be alone, with no one she recognises, its scary to explore a world shd doesnt know considering the only person she knows is now after her. No weapons and drained of goddess magic she needs to think of a way to survive and tackle it to win the game. She has wisdom, and she knows courage and power, but she needs a way to have power to pass her way, and courage to start and end the boss dude

@@geno_cyanide0796 Hmmm an especially good point considering that without the Bow of Light, she would only have the Sheikah Slate Link returned at the end of BoTW.
To put it into perspective, imagine having to do a BoTW run with only 3 hearts and one stamina wheel but other than being allowed weaker bows (no multi shot arrows because no way Zelda has the training and skill for that or the strength in her arms to use stronger bows) and no bullet time (those have been hinted to be Link specific skill and she doesn't have Link's training with weapons) she can ONLY use the slate. Have fun, you're gonna need to be creative to get through Hyrule with only the slate and weak bows for mandatory divine beasts parts.
Edit: When I say weaker bows, I mean nothing stronger than the Soldier's Bow. We can make an exception for the Ancient Bow because I doubt those use arm strength to fire arrows in a perfectly straight line, ignoring gravity the whole way. Would make for an interesting run, current discussion aside.

I love the Dark Link idea (and this whole concept in general), but I'd like to make a suggestion: instead of Dark Link being a creation of Vaati or something, have it spawn from malice corrupting Link. There's a fairly common theory that Ganon in BotW isn't actually in control of malice, but vice versa. (I would even go so far as to say that malice is what prevented Ganon from fully reincarnating as Ganondorf, but that's just me.)
Maybe Link and Zelda discover that despite sealing Ganon away, malice is still present within Hyrule, and while going around, purging the malice Link hadn't while freeing the Divine Beasts and whatnot, it comes to take over Link. Now it's Zelda's job to use her wisdom with Shiekah tech to not only destroy the remaining malice (ala the Metroid games), but also free Link from its control. It would be a new take on a recurring enemy: Malice Link.

"I would see Zelda taking a more reserved approach. Tactical. Studying her enemies for weaknesses, and exploiting them, to rapidly finish them off."
Link, in nearly every incarnation of him, already does this. Especially the Skyward Sword Link, with most if not all monsters in that game being "Directional sword swing" or sometimes item based puzzles. All of the puzzles you presented, I could totally 100% see an incarnation of Link solving too. As for stealth, In Breath of the Wild it's already basically as effective as it would be for Zelda.
"What if throughout this game, Zelda is hunted by Link's Corpse?"
I'll be honest, A thoroughly AMAZING idea, and I would throw any amount of money at Nintendo to play a game like this, but unfortunately there is absolutely *no way* Nintendo would do this. Also, Zelda can absolutely afford to Resurrect Link, she's the dang princess of Hyrule.

that's true about botw. I was also thinking something along the lines of "botw already does this" but that's the thing. Botw is p cool in that you can take many different approaches to puzzles and enemies and traveling/getting around. But in strict terms, Link's triforce is courage, so strictly speaking, his character shouldn't have that much dexterity. But that could make for a somewhat boring, "non Zelda-like" game. So instead, Link ends up being a character with somewhat well rounded abilities/traits.
So imo, giving Zelda her own focus shouldn't be that radical of an idea. If Link can have varied abilities/gameplay, why couldn't she? Why should she be excluded from ground that Link already covers, when he mainly does so for the sake of gameplay?
Another comment mentioned something like this, about how Link's skills/abilities grow and expand throughout the game, and that Zelda could do the same. Especially if her whole thing is wisdom/knowledge. If she can learn "science", she could also learn to fight. Imo, as long as there is enough focus and perhaps nuance to her "learning" in-game, then hell yeah it could work.
I think we all understand that a playable Zelda shouldn't just be a Link clone. If Zelda _did_ get her own game, more story, more character traits-basically more gameplay specific to _her_ , then we wouldn't have the concern of Link having "already done that".
I'm not like debating here. I liked your input! It made me think, so this is mine. 🤙🏽🤙🏽

For example the robot arms could be attached to a backpack and the thing on her eye could similar to the Eye of Truth from the Ocarina of Time. The main story could be Zelda searching temples, tombs and ruins for ancient sheika tech and magical items the royal family hid away. By the end of the game Zelda could combine it all into a magi-tech power armor to fight the final boss.

    • @sargentgrevious2518
      @sargentgrevious2518 5 років тому +4

I think a cool style would also include more creative and inventive uses of BotW runes. For example, something like "Reverse Polarity Magnesis" where instead of manipulating a metal object relative to you, you manipulate yourself relative to the object. Just imagine being forced to do something like use that ability to suspend yourself underneath a moving minecart or polevault yourself up to a high ledge.
And then there's even the concept of min maxing that Zelda can do. Like, maybe she cannot get health upgrades like Link, but she can use Sheikah power to make a damage shield with protective health matching how much energy is dedicated to it. Do you want to have a super dense barrier to take a ton of hits or go full dark souls and dodge only?
And then weapons. Since we've only seen Zelda consistently use rapiers and the occasional instrument, It can be assumed sh won't be as proficient in every technique based weapon the same as Link. So instead, maybe she has some weapon style special to her, like a universal Guardian weapon that can be tweaked for what's needed. Or even just a straight up Sheikah gun!

I think you really missed the point of "Wisdom." Not surprising, considering how vague the word can be, but, looking at the series, we get some idea.
The reason Zelda was "punished" for her attempts to use Sheikah tech was because she was very smart--but not very wise. That's why her accepting her destiny was the solution--she was failing as a Sage because she was determined to "solve" Ganon in her own way, instead of trusting in the goddesses and the power that was hers by birthright. She was very *clever,* but she was blinded by pride and the desire to fix things *herself,* in *her* way, instead of recognizing that stopping Ganon was more important than herself, her pride, or anything else.
She finally gains her power when she puts aside her own ego, and chooses to sacrifice herself for Link and Hyrule. Wisdom is about recognizing what truly matters, and setting aside petty things like pride and one's own survival. That's why OoT Zelda gave up her identity, and TP Zelda surrendered to Zant instead of fighting. They recognized what was right and necessary, and did it without any thought for their pride or comfort.
I think you've got some very good ideas here, and I think BotW Zelda would be a great choice, but I think emphasizing sacrifice and hard choices is more important thematically than having great puzzles (even if those are VERY important for gameplay, don't get me wrong). Maybe make it so more situations have complex consequences and fallout, and make the players choose what to sacrifice and what to risk in order to win, instead of just making it a clean puzzle which can be solved neatly if you're clever enough.

It is annoying how they never place a lot of effort/thought into the Wisdom side of things, but just as bad as that is the fact that we've never get to see the "good" in power. Sure, being powerful is the easiest way to show a bad guy is really bad, but just as damning is the idea that by having courage you're automatically a good guy.
For me, I'd love just a full on role-reversal game, where Link is the Bad guy, and Ganondorf and Zelda are the good guys, with Ganon as a support character.
Maybe Link is a mute-but-cocky guy who touches an instrument of evil that he really shouldn't have, and then the local trapper has to go catch him. But she, on her own, doesn't have the power or the means to catch him. So she goes to the Gorons to request their assistance, or something, and she and Ganon have a team-up to take out the Crazy guy who's destroying everything.
That's more of the kind of thing I'd like to see.

    • @Paulkotsu
      @Paulkotsu 5 років тому +4

it makes no sense for there to be role reversals considering the lore. The wielder of courage is the reincarnation of the hero chosen by the Goddess Hylia and the wielder of the power is the reincarnation of Demise, who is pure evil and is against the gods. Why would Hylia team up with the evil that wants her destroyed, to fight the hero she selected? That makes no sense. Sometimes I wonder if the people who want a game where they play as Zelda or Ganon or whomever have even played the games. The only way "Zelda" or "Ganon" could be the heroes is if they weren't actually reincarnations of Zelda or Ganon, but rather Link. Which would be weird to say the least since Zelda is always a royal, Link is always a hylian. Literally Hylians are a race that descend from the Goddess herself. I mean the more I talk about it the less it makes sense.

In the same vein that Breath of the Wild is Nintendo's take on Open World, I could see the Zelda game being Nintendo's take on something like the Arkham games. You'd get the tools and crafting stuff that's gathered from enemies, like what's listed here, but each "dungeon" would be treated as a stand alone mission. Because of this the overworld hub can he used to gather and utilize standard materials, and each dungeon has multiple tools that interact with it and rewards the player by giving unique materials to craft new tools/weapons sharing the same theme as that dungeon. This could also make it so that how you explore each dungeon changes based on the order you do them. Like, say, the Fire Temple's unique tool does something cool in the Forest Temple, so does the Water Temple's. However, if you clear the Forest Temple first, you can grab something extra in the Spirit Temple that helps in the Water Temple. Thus making the dungeons interact with each other.

Simple solution: World progression. As you progress, milestones as the games percentage is achieved. Like say at the start of the game, people are in disbeleif about links death given the challenges he overcame. then after the say 15% of the game is complete. Alot of hyrule believes links death is real and some fall into despair, while others go try to play hero and take out minion camps on their own (potentially adding more side quests at this point). And then not long after, several people have sighted the Dark-Link-Zombie and feel as if they have to "cure" him. Anyway you get the point

Here's a different version of this for you.
    Link doesn't die.
Instead, a minion of Ganon laid in waiting outside of Hyrule in case Ganon were defeated. Using evil magics, THE SPIRIT OF DEMISE allows this high level minion to resurrect the bodies of the Four Champions. These evil versions of your old friends act as generals who are invading Hyrule just over a decade after the end of BotW. In that decade, Zelda, Link and their allies have been able to start rebuilding Hyrule. New settlements have popped up near all those Shrines Link was able to unlock.
Things are going well. And a Gerudo woman has given birth to a male...
There is no presence of evil in this boy. He is 10 years old when evil creatures begin to emerge... from within the Shrines. The Evil Champions have accessed the Other Realm and are using it to infiltrate Hyrule.
Playing as Link, Zelda and Ganondorf... you must undertake various missions to drive back the Evil Champions both in the Overworld of Hyrule and in the warped Other Realm.
Link is older and more skilled. Zelda is older and wiser. Ganondorf proves to be quite strong as Gerudo males seem to mature faster than normal.
Each brings their own distinct gameplay styles to the table. We all know how Link plays. Zelda would work quite well in the way you described. And playing as Ganondorf would make you feel like a Lynel.
But there's a story here too. Link and Zelda love one another and that love could overwhelm reason in the midst of an all out war against the vilified corpses of their old friends. Mipha in particular could stir jealousy in Zelda or guilt in Link.
And poor Ganondorf would be tormented at every turn as the Evil Champions and eventually Demise try to pull him back down a path of Darkness.
Throw in some multiple endings based on who you use, when you use them and what order you choose to take on missions... and I think we'd have an interesting take on the story of the Triforce.
Spoiler - Demise wants the trio to come to him in a state of weakness so that he can easily pull the Triforce itself from their souls. His plan is to either let his generals defeat them (yes... you can lose characters during gameplay. Permadeath) and retrieve their barely living corpses... or, by the time they reach Demise himself, he would expect them to be both physically and emotionally weakened.
Can they all make it to the end? Can you as the player keep them all alive? If you favor one, it leaves the others underpowered and circumstances will force you to use each of them atleast a couple times.
A player might stick with who they know - Link. But that play might result in Zelda's capture and Ganondorfs return to evil. Playing as only Zelda may see Link sacrificed on a suicide mission for the good of the kingdom. Favor Ganondorf too highly and he may fall right into Demise's carefully laid machinations.
The best ending will require the player to strike a balance that tests their wisdom, courage and strength of skill. Anything less may result in Calamity.

But then it wouldn't feel like a zelda game. That was something he wanted to do. Make it feel like a zelda game, but instead of being brave, you have to be smart. In a game like this, combat would definitely take a back seat. There'd probably only be a few mandatory fights in a dungeon, and for the most part you'd go with stealth. Maybe some investigation and resource management systems could be used as a primary way to get materials, but not as the central theme.

So, I like what you’re plan is. But I have some comments and questions.
    1) who’s gonna be her guiding mentor in the beginning for the tutorial that first shows her, her potential with out the goddess? My thoughts would be one of the big fairies in the plants(I’m forgetting their names) but I feel that would be interesting
    2) I think it’s possible to input stealth in a game like this. Like when she has to invade the underground lair. I feel the necromancy would take over the yiga clan since they need a new leader and they’re strong, loyal, and have large numbers, so before invading you craft yiga clothes you look like sheik and stealthy invade the underground lair
3)I think I would like Zelda to have a friend. Like in all the games all her friends we don’t really see to much depth with we only see a fraction of their relationship to then have them die. However I want a friend she finds in the ruble of her kingdom one to help us fight and invent. Someone powerful and yet young. I don’t want her to be a mentor yet because I don’t think she would be emotionally ready, however I think she would be more willing to pair with someone younger because she would want to care for them. I feel it should be someone from the Rito or maybe an enemy turned good
4)for adaptions wouldn’t it be cool if she could summon an army of guardians or maybe communicate with enemy’s/animals. I think it would appeal to her to have pacifism on her side and no not split ending pacifist or genocide. Just for some animals you can try and make them you’re friend and have a mount or new ability’s or you can harvest materials from them.

Top End Zelda Play in Smash fits the Wisdom ideal role perfectly in a game play philosophical sense because you don't fight people head on. You turn the battlefield into a chess board where most moves puts your King in Check, one puts them into check-mate, and the only safe move you may have left, you only have a split second to figure out before you get a gut check of any number of pre-planned hazards.

Hrm... whilst I would ADORE your idea, I still feel like we are some ways off from Nintendo actually making a title like that. Zelda spin-offs have traditionally been relegated to handheld faire, and while Nintendo's current handheld is... well, really dead, their track record with major spin-offs to secondary characters ranges from Captain Toad Treasure Tracker at best to... Super Princess Peach. Not counting Diddy Kong Racing, obviously.
So whilst I wouldn't hold my breath for a proposed Zelda-starring game with very Western sensibilities, I would like to propose a way of keeping her role in the mainline series and giving her some actual personality. Do you remember the segments in Paper Mario where Peach is able to sneak around Bowser's Castle? Let's do something similar to that. Every time Link defeats a boss monster, a seal on Zelda weakens - let's say she's petrified or something, that's cool. For every boss you beat, Zelda is able to use her own, unique toolkit from within the final dungeon to make things easier on Link before the spell takes hold again. This could simply be scouting out the dungeon (and let's imagine it's HUGE), this could be vital to figuring out where the next dungeon is, this could be forging exclusive equipment for Link that will actually hit boss weaknesses or getting materials to him. But let's not make this a linear progression - no "the curse sets in when Zelda makes the dungeon item and sends it to Link". Let's make it a hard time limit, ala Majora's Mask, where a player can actively and easily fail. There might be items or spells Zelda can cast to extend this time, but those would either be in limited supply or require more effort on her part in order to get. Time could also be sacrificed for failing stealth sections. Heck, you could even make it possible for Zelda to escape the dungeon entirely, and have Link meet up with her to gain access to EVERYTHING she's gotten. This would obviously be really, really hard, but the idea is to give the player exclusive power that they wouldn't otherwise have, as opposed to just making the game easier. The idea is the player thinking under pressure and adapting to find a better way to play.
Or at least, I think something like that would happen before Nintendo lets Zelda actually take a sword to the chest in a game they've been developing themselves. I ADORE the Dark Link concept (though I'd probably tweak it to "Ganon decides to hijack Link's body after Ganon dies" because... yeah that's totally the Ganon thing to do, isn't it?) and find the gameplay itself to be really engrossing... I just think Nintendo needs a bit more time and lean a bit more on their new blood's creative ideas before we can get that.

@@TheDukeofDorks Honestly I think yours has some potential of working in some form, even if perhaps not Zelda. The idea of "Zelda, but it takes place in the future" has been kicked around behind the scenes for a long while by Nintendo as I recall, so the idea of a tech-based Zelda is bleeding in with the Guardians and the Master Cycle. We're seeing a changing of the guard lately, and I think these possibilities have way more gravity than they did even five years ago, at least Nintendo-wise.
Plus I mean... the Tingle games were good, at least! I mean it says a lot that Tingle has more games than Zelda even including the CD-i, but still!

Ok but this sounds absolutely amazing. Possibly during a boss battle there’s a ringing in link’s ears that isn’t very prominent but once the battle is over link has a full on migraine/headache, and the camera fades to white, but instead of switching right to Zelda, it stays like that for some time, displaying messages from Zelda. Things like
“My apologies..” or “I’m sorry..” for the first time ( and she seems to sounds like she’s about to cry seeing link in such pain.
And when it’s after the final boss battle, there is no ringing. After the battle, link prepares to be on Zelda’s side once again. But nothing happens. Instead, Zelda walks out of some room where she was trapped. And then pull a cliffhanger and have the game end ( jk )

Zelda "warhammer"/"warcraft", or Zelda Emblem. Basically rts or turn based. Zelda is not only the main character and strong in her own right, but has to lead forces against Big Bad Evil. Could be Ganon, Vaati, or someone else. Dark Link can work, but I hesitate to kill Link because
    1. frankly, Nintendo doesn't like doing it. Even him losing in BotW was considered new and dangerous. No, he didn't die there. The only canonical death is brought by the historia with the time paradox of Ocarina. (Which is both frustratingly flawed and poorly implemented in my opinion.)
    2. Having him dead or otherwise incapacitated implies Zelda only takes charge when the hero's gone, which is the same logic Nintendo uses to not have her be playable, or even active. Link is the main character and thus can't be thrown aside, and if Link is around, why play Zelda? That mindset needs to be crushed.
Zelda as a comander of an army makes sense due to royal lineage, and both rts and turn based games inherently imply a basic level of wisdom. Since fire emblem already exists for Nintendo, lets have it be an rts for this demonstration. Let's also go with post BotW as the setting. Zelda sets out to restore Hyrule in the wake of calamity Ganon. There can be a few chapters for rebuilding that serve as an introduction to mechanics and her in the lead. This is the first time she's seeing her land in 100 years. Much grief and transition ensues, but Link remains at her side as the silent guard. I expect relationships with the current leaders to develop throughout the game. Just as rebuilding is coming along and she has gained a standing army, Kotake & Koume reincarnated arise, ready to un-seal Ganon, backed by the Yiga and monsters. How will they do this? It turns out Zelda's divine power was indeed the triforce, and using it to seal Ganon caused the pieces to disperse to the springs, now revealed to be dungeons the enemy forces are assaulting even as they strike settlements. If they get even one, their plans will gain traction. Link needs to travel to each to gather the pieces, but it's literal armies inbetween and ready to bear down on him at anytime. Zelda's task is to reach each dungeon and guard it while Link goes for the pieces.
How does Zelda fight? Rather than think up new move sets, i'd rather implement the ones from smash, since she hasn't actually used them. Since Link isn't inherently a wizard, i'm completely fine with the goddess spells going to her as a canonical power set the princesses inherit. Din's fire is a blast of fire that can be charged into a flame wave. Farore's wind is a means to teleport herself and others (maybe with gates) and charging it increases the numbers moved at once. Nayru's love is a defensive buff applied to units. Charging it produces a defensive wall that can block enemy movement. Summon soldier calls a support armor on cooldown. regaining the triforce pieces could increase her powers. Link is at his best, a full powered hero that will defend Zelda capably (possibly tied to difficulty settings) but Zelda isn't one to sit on the sidelines and he can't stay at her side during the dungeons. Both have to be kept from dying.
Units will span the various races. Hylians, Sheikah and Gerudo are everything from foot soldiers to mounted knights. Gorons are the best at both being walls or breaking them with explosives, with a few artillery options included. Zora and Rito are more specialized and use their unique traits to bypass enemies or terrain to support allies. The guardians can be used as scouters and siege engines.
Needless to say, they manage to recover the first two pieces with some difficulty but arrive too late at the third (power). The enemy force takes Hyrule castle for the ritual, necessitating a castle siege. The castle is retaken and the triforce secured, but the ritual succeeds enough to trigger Ganon's return, igniting a burning path of malice as it rages up the side of the Gerudo highlands, before erecting a tower that looms above Hyrule. The climax is a grueling climb against the mountain and the increasing waves of evil, each becoming more...focused, planned. And what awaits them? Ganon, condensed into an intelligent demon king (i prefer pig monster at this point, but some may prefer the 'dorf here) and strategizing as he pumps out an army that will wash over Hyrule if not stopped now.

I'd love to see a Zelda RTS single player type game kinda like the Starcraft story modes. Where you're Zelda directing the army of Hyrule and getting the right strategy and having knowledge of the battlefield is really important. Or a Fire Emblem type game where Zelda is the commander directing troops.
Just some kind of war game where Zelda has to take over her dead father and take Hyrule back with the help of the army by adapting and creating cool strategies. Where you have less troups and even maybe weaker one and have to think a lot, or have the wisdom to overcome everything. But also your soldiers don't just come back, oh and have the different races come into play and make alliances with people, use the Shiekah for intel gathering.
Just do things the leader of a country would do and not just send one dude do everything.

This sounds pretty cool for a Zelda game.
I’ve had two ideas in my head for some time. One would be about Zelda as a child, and the process of growing and becoming a princess/Queen and maybe the backstory behind Sheik. No idea about gameplay, but I think it would flesh out her character more. How she got her abilities, learning to become an archer, the role a person of royalty plays, etc. I got the idea from the beginning of Assassin’s Creed 3 where you go from child, to teen, to adult. Only for Zelda it’s that, but also her different stages of life (archer, princess, assassin).
The other is actually what I thought would happen with BotW. One of the conventions they said they were changing was “playing by yourself”. To me this meant it would have co-op aspects. My thinking was, you recruit new members on your journey (Zelda, a Goron, insert other races) with each of them having abilities to progress through a dungeon that Link couldn’t do on his own. And if you were playing by yourself, you could just swap between characters or use AI.
Their strengths/weaknesses would apply to both dungeons and fights. For example, a Goron could have strong attack and defence, and maybe hold enemies but moves slowly. And for dungeons he can’t swim (because he would sink with no way back up) but could throw characters over gaps or walls and move heavy objects.
Some abilities would serve similar/same functions so characters have exclusive useful abilities, but characters themselves aren’t strictly key/lock solutions. The Goron could throw you over, but there could also be a hookshot pad for a character that has that tool. That way the problem of “getting to the other side” has multiple solutions. But there would be areas where lobbing someone is the only way, while in another the hookshot reaches areas too far to simply throw someone.
Their abilities would be bonuses in combat but not necessary, so you could still play by yourself without it being a problem. For online co-op, up to four people can play, but you have to choose who you want to play as before entering a dungeon (or maybe server) and someone must play as Link. This way the developers have a baseline (you always have Link’s abilities). But also, by committing to one character, each member can feel useful in their own right. Because if everyone could switch mid-game then it wouldn’t matter.
It’s my idea for a Link and Zelda teamup game (albeit with more characters).

Here’s my idea before watching the video
The plot would be something like “after the recent squabble with the dark lord, the land is left on shaky grounds. Most kingdoms are untrusting of each other, and themselves. So Zelda has to go out of her little princess castle and reunite the kingdoms”
This would take Zelda across the land, attempting to help out kingdoms and get them to join you. Kind of like dragon age inquisition or Nino Kuni 2.
In term you could upgrade your kingdom with the resources you find.
Now how would Zelda play? Well she’s wisdom, so she wouldn’t revolve around striking foes down with brute force. Instead she would have to use her brain, just like inquisition, she could find recruits and use battle strategies to lead them to victory. Most battles would pin you against ones stronger than yourself, so you’d have to use your brain and cooperation to defeat them.
Upgrade your town and yourself, find new recruits, build friendships with far off lands and explore the world of greater hyrule!
I imagine it would be called something like
    Legend of Zelda, Golden Kingdom
And maybe there’d be some prophecy that only can the great evil truly be defeated when all six kingdoms cooperate
    These being The:
Hylians, Koroks, Gerudo, Rito, Gorons, Sheikah
Also maybe ther’d be a multiplayer function allowing your friends to take control of members of your team, making it easier instead of having to switch between characters.
Here’s an idea for a quest
To get a goron to join your team, you must meet his request. Said request is to clear a monster from inside the mines. So you go and fight it, but it’s weakspot is hidden. So you gotta figure out how to beat it
So you get one member to whistle to lure it over, you then climb onto a nearby ledge and push a rock onto its back, immobilizing it and breaking its armour, allowing you to hit its weakspot. So you do, but it breaks out and is still alive afterwards. So you chase it down and realize that it’s second weakspot is on its belly, so you chase it into a room with a cannon, you then must get one member to lead it towards the cannon, then another to fire the cannon at it, causing it to stagger and reveal its stomach, then you have use a special sword only wielded by one team member to pierce its hide.
Another random idea, maybe different types of characters have the same abilities, so you don’t need to get the same team as someone else.
Heck, we could pull a fire emblem thing where once a member dies a certain amount of times, the leave the group forever. So much potential

A Zelda game needs to have link fridged, and dark link as a villain is a spectacular take.
I’ve thought that Impa would make an amazing companion for a Zelda with the titular character. With how BotW handles Sheika, it makes me kinda sad to see Impa back to her old lady self rather than her kickass OoT or Warriors design.
I think having Impa with a mastery of Sheikah tech leading Zelda through the hylian wasteland (as her alter ego Sheik) as she gets a handle on the divine energy that clearly powers sheika technology is the way to go. If it were me they’d both be playable in the mandatory co-op campaign but that’s a different thing.
I love having Zelda as sheik mastering the sheika weapons everywhere. But I also would miss the diviner we know. And I don’t think they’re exclusive. Zeldas playable debut could have her utilizing her skills as sheik (and the sheikah tribe) as well as her sage abilities. It would even work as a pretty traditional Zelda, why would we play as a dude with a sword when we can be a demigodess trained by a ninja?

Ok, so imagine for the main Zelda game, a trilogy, courage, wisdom and power. You play Zelda in wisdom, link in courage, and in power it s a super mega dungeon (cheaper maybe) and you somehow play both of them (like Pokémon dungeon) and the final boss is ganon.
The 2 main games would be the same open world, but some areas are blocked to one of the 2. Give them each a different set of items (utility for zelda, cool weapons for link). Some areas guarded by though power Bose's are for link, and an old inaccessible ruin for zelda (e.g use tech for zelda to get in)
Link would get bombs, master sword, hylian shield, the map would be covered with enemies and some are very tough and are impossible for zelda to beat. Lynel, hinox, guardians, etc. For an "original" one: giant scorpion with a weak spot, deals poisonous dmg and can climb on walls. Maybe some areas are hack and slash but you would need link's power to get through. Add dungeons with "simple" puzzles, several mini bosses, and the dungeons are more linear. And NPC's would treat you like an adventurer sending you to far off places for missions.
Zelda would get several utility tools that she gets through the game (in opposition to link's cool weapons) like stasis, magnesis, maybe she has a hacking mini game, giver a four basic elment thing, a web thing (connect moving parts for cool puzzles). She would have weak but complex enemies like you described. Some areas would have monsters link just isn't equiped to fight. Dungeons with massive puzzles that are complex, maybe she has a few big ones, link many small ones. NPC interaction can be super cool, royalty, deciding who is guilty, solving affaires, enigmas, crimes, etc (cause she is wisdom)
I think this could be real cool, what do you think?

Did you say share ideas? Because I will.
My personal idea for a Zelda game wouldn't technically just be about Zelda. Imagine a scenario where Link has been captured or killed or put to sleep or something by Ganondorf or some other villain, and Zelda is pushed in a prison cell. She needs to escape. So what does she do? Try to escape using her Steathly side. She finds scraps of old cloth and use some goddess-magic to become Sheik. Then you escape and try to set out.
Or imagine a place where you've fought using all your weapons and are trying to get more weapons and go to shop by a harbour. But it turns out the shopkeeper only sells specific items you need to sailors. So you turn into Tetra. Each different version of Zelda could have a different play style where you have to use that disguise to get past.
Maybe a scenario where, as Links captured, the Master Sword or whatever item you need to defeat the big bad of the game is locked away never to be found. Maybe you need to use the Sheik persona (not the game) to get past the guards blocking the entrance to it and then turn back into ordinary Zelda to stab them in the back.
These are only ideas, so sorry if they aren't really that good.
