In 2006 I saw Spyker race at the 12 Hours of Sebring. One of their cars crashed in qualifying, and the team worked around the clock getting the car back on the track to compete in the race. I watched them throughout the night. They finished just a half hour after the race started, and the car did well and completed the race. Victor Muller invited me into the paddock to take pictures of the team working on their car. I know a lot about him and his role in their demise, but as a 21 year old, it left a lasting impression on me.

Fun fact: Designer Maarten de Bruijn (i probably misspelled that) have started a new boutique supercar company this year and building modern handmade aluminium cars. His only model Ferox V8 is literally the spiritual successor of C8 Laviolette (my beloved) as you can instantly tell from it's outlines. Built with completely handformed panels and using modern version of first-gen C8's Audi powertrain. His approach to interior is visibly different since Spyker branding is no more but some characteristic touches here and there still exists, while overall the car looks leaner. You all can tell i'm a fan now huh.
I didn't realised he left the company at 2005 but i guess that explains why successor models look like poop (no, seriously).
It's a real shame D20 SSUV never realised though, would be a real game shanger not just for the company but for the entire automotive history as well. Bummer.

Many people watching this probably first heard of the name Spyker through Top Gear but I knew about the Spyker for around 8 years before I heard of Top Gear. The Spyker came second in the P2P mainly due to having 4wd (lower gear ratio) to get through the difficult terrain and the fact that the driver Charles Goddard sold all the spares before starting, only to run into trouble with the magneto (that device used before car batteries and ignitions) which failed halfway through Russia and had to be rebuilt. Goddard then drove for over 23 hours straight to catch up.

The only way i see Spyker may surviving is if Koenigsegg took over and kept it as there lower price GT brand, probably to compare with the Continental GT. I doubt even Koenigsegg could make it profitable at this point. With the Spyker production numbers I wonder if they take into account they launched into the drink for Basic instinct 2

    • @memmem77
      @memmem77 Рік тому +1

i've been saying this for a long time now.
It would make total sense, they have their performance pedigree brand Koenigsegg and a more downtuned and focused on luxury brand next to Koenigsegg. Both could perfectly coexist as they both have their unique group of buyers.
Koenigsegg has the base and technology to built the C8 further on and they even have an engine ready to go developed.
And i'm presuming CvK has deep enough pockets and knowledge to envision such a project.
They could basically built the near entire car in Sweden and then ship them off to The Netherlands for some final assembly to keep the "made in Holland" image alive.
If there is any company capable of doing this, it's Koenigsegg. They understand the niche car segments very well.
There is only one issue; the sale of the Spyker trademarks is more complicated as thought before and it might take quite some time for the current administrator to actually put these trademarks up for sale. And without these trademarks, there is nothing to "revive".

i've recently been to the Amsterdam Motor show where Spyker was, and i heard that there still is someone who is making new Spykers, which is great to hear. they're making the c8 double 12, which is a homologated version of the Le mans race car

Lol... you captured it. Victor made 4 big mistakes, 1. Adultery, 2. No engine (Audi would no longer provide theirs), 3. Buying an F1 Team (but at least I got to go to Monaco with them), 4. Buying SAAB. Obviously he made more than 4 mistakes, but these sucked his money, focus and time. Alas, Spyker had no rudder.

LOL, 'Spyker had no rudder'; for sure since Maarten de Bruijn took it to start building a beautiful boat ;-)

I'm Dutch, you know. A few months ago I viewed the Dog de Muro film on the Spyker C8. I wrote an long comment on the C8 and Spyker, and I think you might have read that, maybe not... However, tSpyker story is completely beserk and bonckers and stupid at the same time. A shame that one man could bring such a nice car brand from a rising star to an gutter. Thanks for this vid, I did like it!

As an American with two Fords and a Chrysler I have only a passing interest in Stryker. Not savvy enough to see the body styling as particularly outstanding but was always floored by the interior appointments.
I subscribed today. Not for the content. Lord knows I subscribe to enough car guys. I like the delivery here better than any.

Maarten de Bruijn can’t help himself and used the last 4 years to create a new sportscar: the DeBruyn Ferox V8.
The first four are being built right now and will be delivered to their happy owners end 2024/beginning 2025.

I have never cared about about cars in my life. I'm not ignorant, I know a good few classics and oddities and appreciate them as aesthetic. I know the general engineering principles behind them. I even know enough hate SUVs and oversized pickup trucks on moral principle!
But beyond that focused disdain, the personal automobile is just a boring, though sometimes pretty, means to an end.
But for 18 minutes I cared so very deeply about this company and their cars. I don't know how you did it but you've earned a sub and a binge watching session.
