I was in Chattanooga after returning home from Viet Nam. At that time 1968 the people treated me royally. I had the unfortunate duty of bringing back a fellow soldier and I really remember the mother and dad weeping along with me. I always always salute all military men and women. MB, this is awesome videography! the sounds, horns, squeals, screeches, howls each train makes its own melody. Up hill, down hill, right turn, left turn simultaneously, only trains on steel wheels and steel rails can do. You bring out the fascinating and amazing aspect of trains superbly. Keep up the great work of art.
Slug set was just as cool. Not many know the 40 is always paired up with it for tractive power when needed.. Great stuff and will look for more..and thanks.
All I have to say is WOW!!! I love the shot from lookout mountain absolutely beautiful. The CSX train looked it could have used some help. Thanks from a very grateful railroad fan. I appreciate you work. I'm sad to say not many trains here in Maine all the paper mills are closing.
From the mountain, it all looks slower than it in reality is. I think the train was okay. It just had to stop in town because of the typical congestion. Thank you for your appreciation and loyalty!
+mbmars01 Yes, that is a great shot from the mountain. That CSX train had to slow/stop because of the 23rd street interlocking due to it being controlled by NS. The one who controls, prioritizes as such.
+mbmars01 A long time ago used to drive for van service carrying NS crews. Have been in the room w/Debutts operator. Could simply be a case of CSX being slow sending a request. That's how they did it then. A light on the board would come on when CSX sent a request through the interlocking, then the operator would line them through unless an NS train was already setup. No request, no go until they do send one.
I grew up just south of Chattanooga and watching NS run. It truly is beautiful country and people that visit are amazed. At Valley Head, AL the highest point on the track from Chatt to Birmingham there is a little cafe by the tracks and a very long siding so the crews will come in for lunch or breakfast when they can. Its fun to talk to them. They say that no more than 3 consisted engines can pull or it will break the couplers. So they add in mid engines to help. This track is the best maintained track NS has and is rated the highest speed any track can get. Every crossing now has lights and gates...every one from Chatt to Bham.
That's one huge Railroad Yard! That's allot of cars to sort! Allot of Goodies! Have to work overtime to switch all those cars around, and get them ready for shipment on time!

I have a railyard behind my apartment. Not sure how the inside of it looks, but I have a pretty good idea after watching this video. A lot of times I go to the back to watch railcars being brought in.
Great video, I've railfanned DeButts and the Chattanooga area, great area, next time you return there, check out TVRM, Tennessee Valley Rail Museum, and the busy junction known as Ootlewah, where rail traffic from Knoxville, Tn and Atlanta Ga come into Chattanooga, including coal trains from the Powder River Basin out west with BNSF power and also Citico Junction where all that traffic plus traffic from the CNO&TP district of the NS come into Chattanooga, Ive railfanned this area of Tennessee and those are the best locations.

I wish I had a picture to pass up, but about 2016-OCT-10th in Fargo, ND, I was cycling and passed a parked line of ~37-40 BNSF engines (enough I lost count near the far end of it)! All I could think was, where'd this come from and where's it going? A train solely of locomotives.

At 9:30 +/- NS runs over CSX trackage between Wauhatchie, TN and Stevenson, AL. An NS predecessor purchased land for tracks roughly between those two points. Apparently seeing that the competing railroad was serious the existing track owner made a deal for joint trackage. It gave one RR more revenue and saved the other railroad the capital cost. Several parcels on the proposed line are still owned by NS.

there's some great spots along the Mississippi, near LaCrosse and Praire Du Chein with high cliffs there, too. the CP runs no. and so. along the west bank of the river. I haven't been there since my grampa and I were catfishing there (channel cats). that was in '67, when I was on-leave from Vietnam. what a way to spend leave-time. I can try it this spring.

Nice catch of the 13 engines on 1 train! It had over 9 billion brand new ET44AH's of NS being sent. You should go check on your mailbox after this train arrives at DeButts Yard. Another bonus was Q145 (not Q144 I believe) led by a new UP SD70AH. At Lookout Mountain, lots of places all over the lookout, right?
AGS North District from Chattanooga, TN to Irondale, AL to be precise - the old Alabama Great Southern road that continues on the AGS South District to Meridian, MS.
+mbmars01 That's what i thought to until i watched the part as it entered the yard. Notice the heat haze/exhaust coming from the last two units. I know they can do that from the lead unit, just this is the first time i have ever actually seen it done.
I don't have time to count cars while filming, because I have to concentrate on the display of the camera to see that everything is well framed. So I will never know which train is the longest I ever saw lol
Hi from New Zealand, where we have narrow gauge (3ft 6") trains, which are a lot shorter than your USA monster trains! Superb video work with panning and zooming. That's absolutely right and that's beside were I stood back then when I filmed some trains! I saw actually some of those trucks using this crossing and thought that crossing gates might be a good idea here, because one really has a poor view while crossing three tracks!
That's a lot of power on the point! That slug unit was cool to see. And, they just let you in their yard? I had Arizona DPS roll up on me just for being on the street in front of the BNSF yard here in Phoenix. That only happened once, which maybe means someone was just having a bad day.
I wasn't in the yard!! Everything is filmed from public ground. Thanks to the great zoom of the camcorder, I can get a close-up of activities inside, though. I feel you, BNSF is more sensitive. I just made the same experience and I didn't trespass in this case, either. They just don't like you to take pictures of their yards. It's kinda stupid, because you get yard views from all angles on google images anyway, but I don't argue and go somewhere else...
Depends on the tonnage-probably just the first 3-4. Railroads have many rules regarding the number of engines online and dynamic brakes used etc. Most of the power is set up in trailing mode
What time of the year did you made this video (look like a lot of smoke in the air almost like Indidan summer as we call it)? How much flying time do you get on your drone before you have to land it? The pictures is very very good thanks. (beautiful country in that part of the state). How long does one crew work a train? was all 13 of those power units on the line? what is the max HP of and unit in use today. thanks for 48 minutes of some out standing rail video. have a good day.
This was filmed in June 2016. It's funny - you're not the first who thought I used a drone for part of this video. It's actually filmed from Point Park at Lookout Mountain. Crews have typically 12-hour shifts. No, many units in this 13-engine consist were brand new deliveries of Tier 4 compliant locomotives to Norfolk Southern. Most typical are 4,000 or 4,400 horsepower units. Some 6,000 hp locomotives were built for American freight service as well, but their prime movers turned out to be rather unreliable. also I have a question for you, since I was a kid i've been a railfan and I've noticed that the railroad companies are recognised by the Horns and to me NS always has the best tuned horn, is that something that they request when purchasing the locos, I grew up in UP BNSF areas and they dont have that horn type but when I took road trips I've discovered CSX and NS but NS horns to me are king
Well, there are so many different types of locomotives from different eras, with all kinds of horns and each railroad has different engines dominating their roster. Anyway, I know that many railfans claim they can tell you which railroad a unit belongs to by just listening to the horn. I can't do that.
JUST OUT OF CHATTANOOGA TENNESSEE THE RAIL ROAD TRACKS ARE SO STRAIGHT AND LEVEL.BUT IN GEORGIA WELL IT IS NOE TE SAME. YOU SEE A BOW BACK TRAIN YOU KNOW WHERE IT IS.
Point is - these are the same companies that manage also most of Georgia's rail traffic and some of the districts overlap anyway in Tennessee and Georgia. I don't understand what your problem with Georgia is.
For railfanning, it is typically not an advantage if the city is larger. I have Atlanta nearby, but that's truly not a great place for railfanning due to too much car traffic.
That's a slug. It's a motorless, cabless, train-like vehicle that is used by the train to spread out it's power and braking capabilities. It's like a ghost locomotive. It's got brakes, but depends on the locomotive to supply the power.

CSX's Wauhatchie Yard is much smaller than expected. NS's DeButts Yard is a HUGE classification yard, yes?

It's certainly possible, although the arrangement seems to be somewhat strange. If so it's more like a DPU push.

I don't have time to count cars while filming, because I have to concentrate on the display of the camera to see that everything is well framed. So I will never know which train is the longest I ever saw lol

Hi from New Zealand, where we have narrow gauge (3ft 6") trains, which are a lot shorter than your USA monster trains! Superb video work with panning and zooming. Thank you for all your effort and time with all the many videos. This one is definitely over the top. How long before you get a camera drone for ariel shots? So much involved with rail transportation that is unseen by the public. Hope to continue to learn more.
Thanks! I'm not really planning on using a drone. Flying a drone into a yard is technically trespassing. One shouldn't do this without permission.

That's absolutely right and that's beside were I stood back then when I filmed some trains! I saw actually some of those trucks using this crossing and thought that crossing gates might be a good idea here, because one really has a poor view while crossing three tracks!

And, they just let you in their yard? I had Arizona DPS roll up on me just for being on the street in front of the BNSF yard here in Phoenix. That only happened once, which maybe means someone was just having a bad day.
I wasn't in the yard!! Everything is filmed from public ground. Thanks to the great zoom of the camcorder, I can get a close-up of activities inside, though. I feel you, BNSF is more sensitive. I just made the same experience and I didn't trespass in this case, either. They just don't like you to take pictures of their yards. It's kinda stupid, because you get yard views from all angles on google images anyway, but I don't argue and go somewhere else...

No, the new Tier 4s were just being delivered. I think the first two and the last two had been online, but I don't really remember it.

Depends on the tonnage-probably just the first 3-4. Railroads have many rules regarding the number of engines online and dynamic brakes used etc. Most of the power is set up in trailing mode
What time of the year did you made this video (look like a lot of smoke in the air almost like Indidan summer as we call it)? How much flying time do you get on your drone before you have to land it? The pictures is very very good thanks. (beautiful country in that part of the state). This was filmed in June 2016. It's funny - you're not the first who thought I used a drone for part of this video. It's actually filmed from Point Park at Lookout Mountain. Crews have typically 12-hour shifts. No, many units in this 13-engine consist were brand new deliveries of Tier 4 compliant locomotives to Norfolk Southern. Most typical are 4,000 or 4,400 horsepower units. Some 6,000 hp locomotives were built for American freight service as well, but their prime movers turned out to be rather unreliable. also I have a question for you, since I was a kid i've been a railfan and I've noticed that the railroad companies are recognised by the Horns and to me NS always has the best tuned horn, is that something that they request when purchasing the locos, I grew up in UP BNSF areas and they dont have that horn type but when I took road trips I've discovered CSX and NS but NS horns to me are king
Well, there are so many different types of locomotives from different eras, with all kinds of horns and each railroad has different engines dominating their roster. Anyway, I know that many railfans claim they can tell you which railroad a unit belongs to by just listening to the horn. I can't do that.

Point is - these are the same companies that manage also most of Georgia's rail traffic and some of the districts overlap anyway in Tennessee and Georgia. I don't understand what your problem with Georgia is.

For railfanning, it is typically not an advantage if the city is larger. I have Atlanta nearby, but that's truly not a great place for railfanning due to too much car traffic.

That's called a slug, a powered engine that is remotely controlled from the lead locomotive.

That's a slug. It's a motorless, cabless, train-like vehicle that is used by the train to spread out it's power and braking capabilities. It's like a ghost locomotive. It's got brakes, but depends on the locomotive to supply the power.
