Unfortunately we Khmers opened the doors for Vietnamese settlers and they did what the Europeans did to the indigenous peoples in America.
It's hard to find information about what exactly happened, so many conflicting articles
@@saviyou
Yes I have been interested in this history ever since I met a Khmer Krom person at a Vietnamese church in California. Although she has never been to Cambodia, her Khmer was much better than mine. She was from Soc Trang.
My wife is Vietnamese and I am Khmer Leu born in Batthambong but raised in the U.S. I have recently visited Kampuchea Krom Soc Trang province and spoke with some Khmer Krom people about their history. It all started back during the Chenla Dynasty when the Khmer Empire was split. The Khmer formed a relationship with the Vietnamese lords and even married the princess. This opened the doors for Vietnamese settlers to move South into Khmer land and as time passed, the Khmer Krom and Vietnamese coexisted for centuries but the land was never officially annexed until 1948 by the French. Vietnamese authorities know very well about this history and work excessively to keep it away from the public’s attention. It’s very interesting. If you ever visit Kampuchea Krom there’s a love/hate relationship between the Khmer and Vietnamese. Kind of like the Native Americans in America.
@@MillionaireMan3178 this is really interesting. I did read that the Kampuchea Krom leaders favored the Vietnamese what you wrote makes a lot of sense.

You’re correct brother but Khmer Empire is bigger than the map you show. It was stretched to Thailand and Laos nowadays

Welcome friend I’m heading to Saigon in the next video, stay tuned!
Great job explaining the Khmer story from start ❤❤❤
Great video, good job , it's very to watch described some of our Khmer territory history....👍😍❤🇰🇭
There are a number of Islands that belong to Khmer including on the mainland on Vietnam side too. In the jungles on the Vietnam side you can still find the small Angkor ruins and writings of Khmer empire still on these stone walls. That’s including in Thailand as well. Perhaps you should look into Thailand as well.
Yes, you're correct. I know about Thailand also, would like to visit and see those places sometime next year.
another awesome savi video!
Thanks Pepper! Tell Simon I said hello 👋

Keep up the vids! 😎👍
Hello Savi You channel and I am your fan look video ! greeting from PhiromWalker thank for your share
Neighboring countries got a piece of something from Cambodia. Sad
Do not dwell on the past as life is short to do the things you don't love doing. Good leadership leads to prosperity and happiness. Poor leadership leads to suffering and dead like Pol Pot. Vietnam has developed so much for their tourism like Vinpearl in Nha Trang, Bana Hills in Danang, Theme Parks in Phu Quoc sonds like (Foo Vuck). Just to name a few. Be kind, be cool, and be happy. Cheers from Nha Trang!
oh trust me we Viets know everything under Phan Rang - Vietnam belonged to the Champa people we just took it over in 1471 , just like how china took our territories like GuangDong , Hong kong , Zhanjiang , Yunnan and Hainan use to be Our territory but they took it over... we were force to expand south since we were a small Country , China's too strong
Great video food looked delicious, nice to see you do a Vietnam video always enjoy these types of videos 👍
I love it when you do some research and telling the history of the country. very professional
I love phu quoc going there for my 50th birthday next month, it is very similar to the two koh rong Islands which are also great islands
Liked the the brief history of Kampuchea Krom and Phu Quoc
I would go to that island for one reason and one reason only, that theme park they have there!
Savi, You talk about the weather but you did not mention what month you were in Phu Quoc !!!!!. What are the best months to visit the island ??. ( dry season ). Max. Australia.
The Khmer Empire was once the greatest empire in South East Asia
I like the video very much, but the camera seems to have a shade or the sky just seems a little dark for such a sunny day.
It was the sky… still had a lot of clouds
what month were you there that I see it is raining in your video?
Rất nhiều người Campuchia đòi đất đai nhỉ nếu người Mông Cổ cũng đòi như thế thì theo mọi người lãnh thổ của họ sẽ tới đâu 😊😊
Would you recommend the see food? How much it was average?
Yes the seafood is really good but go to the restaurant where they cook fresh for you. Cost depends on the type of seafood and size. You will pay a little more because it is a tourist area but I spend about $10-20 for a seafood meal.
what month you were there that I see raining?
Do did you arrive from Cambodia ? Do you have to clear customs since Phu Quoc is Vietnam ?
can someone tell me the name of the song in the background for the first 2 mins

there are not a lot of vietnamese pp go there lately because of ripped off by local bussiness, they rather go to thailand or cambodia much more cheaper than go to phu quoc
This seems accurate, the prices were much higher than I expected.
whats the song you used 1:30 ?

I will arrive in Vietnam in April Savi. You should come meet with me in An Giang Province because I am Khmer and half Thai and my wife is full Vietnamese. And all her Vietnamese family are the wealthiest in An Giang Province. You can come stay with me and my nice humble Vietnamese family Savi, if you can make it back to that area of southern Vietnam in April. And there is a big Khmer Krom community in An Giang province as well. Me and my Vietnamese in-law family will take you to the best places for delicious Vietnamese food👍🇺🇸🇰🇭🇻🇳👍

Every time you say the name of the city i just can't help but think of Shrek.😅
I can't even pronounce Khmer words correct so I know I miss pronounced a lot of vietnamese words ;)
I just don’t see the strong evidence for a long period of colonization from Khmer side on Koh Tral/Phu Quoc. Historically, the Khmer records are also lacking claim to legitimacy on this territory. When the French soldiers fought on the Island, they were fighting the Vietnamese army and not the Cambodian army. This is evidence on why French ceded the claimed island to Vietnam and not Cambodia. As for Kampuchea Krom, it’s more complicated but nobody is denying that was former Khmer and Champa territory.
Are you in that war?

Yes, alot of vietnamese dishes can be found all over the world now. Even in my small town we have 4 vietnamese restaurants and not a single Thai or Khmer. But to eat a dish like Bun Quay where it was first made is something special in my opinion.

Why some Cambodian people don't accept the historical truth that now Phu Quoc island belong to Vietnam? We can develop and build our country by ourselves without envying. If you don't have good strategies to develop and attract tourists, I think that you have 10 or more Islands like that, nobody can't know them. Vietnamese people are always friendly and welcome tourists around from the world.

If you look at the maps of Cambodia phu Quoc is obviously in Cambodia territorial waters. The story I heard is the island wanted its independence and Vietnam just swooped in and stole it.
If the island used to be apart of Khmer Krom is there any Khmer speaking people there?

Your information of history is not correct. When France came, Khmer Krom and Phu Quoc/Kon Tral had already been territory of Vietnam. You should find more information about Brevie Line to understand why France recognized Vietnam's sovereignty over such lands. By the way, you may find further information in the article of "Cambodia’s Impossible Dream: Koh Tral" availaible on internet.
Phu Quoc was taken by Vietnam in around 1708, before the French came. France didn't give Phu Quoc to Vietnam. They only followed what had existed. According to Wikipedia, "Around 1680, Phú Quốc was part of the Principality of Hà Tiên, a maritime polity founded by Chinese merchant and explorer Mạc Cửu under the patronage of the Cambodian king. Mạc Cửu later switched allegiance to the Nguyễn lords and recognized the authority of the Vietnamese sovereign.[4][5] He sent a tribute mission to the Nguyễn court in 1708, and in return received the title of Tong Binh of Hà Tiên[6] and the noble title Marquess Cửu Ngọc (Vietnamese: Cửu Ngọc hầu)"
I read that wiki. It's literally a copy and paste from several online articles, provides zero citation and in my opinion, an oversimplification of what actually happened.

Nowadays I don't see any possibilities to claim this big island back from Vietnam, but the then prime minister must not have either signed or legalized this island to Vietnam.
As I remember, King Sihanouk had never accept it that this Koh Tral belongs to Vietnam !!!
Yes I see
Koh tral belongs to Cambodia 🇰🇭

I’m Cambodian American and have to kindly disagree. Phú Quốc and Kampuchea Krom has been under Vietnamese rule for a few hundred years now. The Vietnamese rulers were kind enough to let the Khmers practice their religion and maintain their language and culture. If they wanted to, they could have totally wiped out the Khmer Krom people. Cambo Vlogs even talked about this. And it’s not that hard to learn a few Viet words and phrases if you can speak Khmer as I can speak and understand a little Viet. My family is from the mainland Cambodia by the way not “Mien Tay” “Mien Năm”, southern Vietnam. 😀👍🏽
Bottom line is Kampuchea Krom was at one point part of the Khmer Empire. When and why it changed hands, was a little blurry. Phu Quoc's history is also convoluted at best. It's almost as if someone doesn't want us to know what really happened.
As an ignorant 😊
agreed, from what I hear and see Khmers in Vietnam seem to live relatively well. Khmer people need to get over the past, we have enough land to work with presently. There's many other nations that are smaller than Cambodia. Israel and Singapore are smaller than Cambodia but are prominent on the world stage. add to that there are thousands of tribes and groups of people around the world that don't even have a nation to call their own.
@WingChunBoyz, Khmer Krom was mistreated badly for awhile, it's just gotten better in the last 10 years or so. Just like the Khmer Leu people in North Eastern Thailand, they were not allowed to learn the Khmer language and practice the traditions for a long while too. I have family that region.
Brother, please check what their emperor Minh Miang did to our people in Cambodia and Khmer Krom
Before Cambodians want to claim this land back, they should have learned properly about the history first. These islands and lands may belong to the Khmer Empire in the past but it was at least 500 years ago. But claiming these territories were still part of Cambodia or Khmer in "19th century" is totally crap. Viets and Chinese already came and settled here as early as 17th century. When French came to invade this region, who was the one who put up most of the fights and resistances ? You reckon the indigenous Khmer did that or what. There are tons of resources out there to read and deep into research, stop trying to look at one side of the story and alter the history, and keep saying "French gave these lands to Vietnam". From Saigon (not Prey Norkoh) thanks
@namvinhtran4034 I have to dig deep from difference resources in english to understand those complex histeries. Fortunately I read and understand english. I find it harder for us to get informations unlike for the peoples who speak and read vietamese. Everthing was destroyed during pol pot.
