There was a financial product I looked at purchasing a year and a half ago. The way it works is if the S&P 500 goes up, you get to keep it. But if the S&P 500 goes down, they will eat your losses up to a certain amount. I asked _"How the hell is possible? and how you are able to sell me this product and get paid yourself on something that sounds too good to be true?? If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense; and a bank is not going to repay my losses just because they're good Christians! "_ He told me that enough people ask for their money back before the maturity of the product and pay the early-penalty to be able to pay out individuals who lose money if the S&P went down, and that when that fails, most of their revenue comes from selling zero-day expiry options to degenerates on Wall Street bets. this revenue allows them to make me whole(to an extent) if the market goes down. TL;DR, transfer of money from gamblers to long-term, boring investors. He spoke my language, and he got a sale. I think he got a $1,000 commission for selling me that financial product, and I don't mind paying it. I didn't know that thing existed, and it made me feel a lot more secure about putting money into something that I maybe otherwise would not have put money into. It got me out of a gambling mindset; he educated me, he got money for educating me, and I wound up doing better financially as a result. A lot of people are afraid to be honest about how they make their money. And some of them, *SHOULD* be afraid to be honest about how they make their money because they are actively screwing people. Some are not. You should never be afraid to ask. Conversely, if someone offers you value, be ok to pay for it... you get bullshit like honey from a society where nobody is willing to pay fro anything & everyone wants money for nothing(and their chicks for free)
I hate it when these creators say "I've been using X product for months now" when you just KNOW the sponsor segment is the first time they ever actually used it in their life and after the video they just threw it away/sent it back to the company and never thought about it again
Even if they have used it for months. I know colleagues in tech alongside me who have used things their whole lives, and still don't know why/what/how.
And this is why I hate those fucking people, lying to their subscribers. They are horrible people, someone who's legit and care would never lie, even if it means to earn a paycheck.
Or they have an issue then talk about how great the customer service is. Of course you got white glove service, they need you to keep shilling the product.
I'm just a truck driver by day and XDA developer by night helping people with roms and kernels in 2024 for no money. Your channel is my favorite of al time. Merry Christmas Rossman!
Oh wow, I am a truck driver here also. I did C++ developer work for the largest used Second Life client years ago. I still do developer stuff in my spare time.
This right here is why I have a problem with the current economy and system. I understand it is what it is and we all need to get on as best we can, that's fine I get it. Hes driving a truck but developer on xda for fun by night.... to my mind he should be driving things for fun and doing software development for fun AND a job. Am I crazy?! Im in a similar boat, different, but we are both wet and don't need to be, if that makes sense. Many Rossmann fans probably are also or at least can sympathize.
the thing that sucks the most is that even if you did your due diligence and decided to avoid a honey sponsorship if the viewers installed it from someone else it might still steal your affiliate even if you had nothing to do with them. truly scummy behavior.
If they item didnt actually cost what you were paying. Then both sides were trying to scam the consumer. This is like the theif calling the burgler a crook. We dont make laws to protect sales people. So there is no wrong doing here. Not legally anyway.
thats the part im surprised nobody else said, its not even the fact that it scams the people who promoted it, it scams anyone with an affiliate program no matter what. like, you could make an affiliate link for a product you genuinely have interest in and tell anyone whos interested in it, they all agree to buy it. you wake up excited that you might finally get to pay this months rent, then you see you have 0$ in your bank account because they all used a malicious browser extension you didnt even know existed and it just robbed you of all your commissions. its actually terrifying that they got away with this for so long, i couldnt imagine the amount of gaslighting people did to themselves by saying "its just a bug" or "maybe i should refresh the page..?" and never getting it...
@@franktkalcevic5342 because people like Louise keep repeating this "it was actually ripping off the creators who were shilling it!" stuff, as if non-sponsored affiliate links were unaffected.
@@DarkForce2024 They were a pretty big sponsor several years ago. The Google Ads Transparency Center shows that "joinhoney" is still making Google Search ads, but not image or video ads.
I once tried honey to see if it could save me money with how hard people were shilling it. I tend to look up coupons codes or try to find deals, and I thought it'd be pretty cool to have some sort of extension that would already scrape the internet for these codes and give them to me. Turned out, 100% of the time it literally couldn't find a coupon or anything of value, even when I would use websites like Papajohns (SM25 for 25% off btw), which has insane amounts of coupon codes online - nothing. At that point I realized honey couldn't live up to any of its advertising and uninstalled it.
Many years ago I worked for my Uncle on the farm. A neighbor who had moved from the city asked him how to get the county to cut the grass along the road so nicely like the road past my uncle's farm. His answer provided all you need to know about him: "I have no idea. I do it myself as the county is busy doing things I can't do. Cutting the side of the road a couple times a month is simple, and as you say it looks so nice, plus it gives satisfaction and a sense of pride in my farm."
i think the problem is that the term is "influencer" at all. Like there are influential people, and there are things or events or forces that influence you; but the idea that someone is just "influencing" is.... well that isn't really how it's supposed to work. The Influence is supposed to be an after effect, not the motive.
I mean, he was right to be skeptical, even then. You really do have to always ask yourself "but what is the catch?" I'm glad I was brought up this way, my father would have said the same thing.
I was checking out my purchases on a website last night and Honey said it found the best deal for me which was nothing. None of their coupon codes worked. It took me 3 minutes on my own to find a coupon code for $15 off. Honey is a scam and I uninstalled it. Thanks for your video.
@@katlee8778 what's being cheap have to do with being scammed? the scam in this case was telling the customer that nowhere in the world would a coupon exist. not trying to put in a coupon would've just resulted in the same anyway.

This video puts into words why I like my job. I'm a Tier 3 support tech for a mid-size IT support company based in Texas. I work tickets others struggle with, answer the questions of the techs around me when they're stumped, and I train a lot of the new techs in my "style" of working a ticket. I've been offered to become a team lead, but then most of my job would be watching metrics and checking others' work. I've been offered to move over to be a sysadmin, and while that would pay substantially more, I'd also be on call on weekends and at night sometimes and not work as directly with the clients. And either of those would be a stepping stone to management, which is not where I want to be because I wouldn't be putting my actual talents to work. I may not make as much as I could, but I like being able to help clients in my little corner of the world be happier and more productive. And I like being able to help new techs become great techs by teaching them what I know and showing them how to do the work efficiently. And I've turned down other offers for much more money to stay where I am.
@@johnfreeman2956 - I have, and gotten them. They just don't want to go too far past the "cap" for the position, lest everyone expect as much as I make.
Go for the sysadmin... you still work with the clients and you get a bit more pull in the operation of the system, plus the $$$. Not gong to BS you about the hours. 1st level supervision isnt that bad.. you get a bit better view of the company as a whole.. It's the old Birds on a post meme... "everytime the people on the bottom look up they see assholes and all the people see when they look down is shit". Only problem with the sysadmin is you're more easily replaced by offshore resources.
What matters in life is happiness. Sometimes you need more money, sometimes better or different job. Doesn't matter, those are all means to get there. If you are happy where you are that's awesome. Just be honest with yourself and think long term as well. Best of luck.
It's almost like he did that on purpose. He purposefully, through great technical skill, dropped the videos fps just to demonstrate his obviouse devious lie, thus turning him into that perfect Rapscallion (aka bullshitter). There is so many levels of comedy in that clip.
I got a similar speech from my dad when I was in my early teens, late 80's. I had got in trouble for some indiscretion I had committed at school, honestly can't remember what is was. Now I started my explanation as to why I had done what I had done by expressing "What's the point if the whole world is in such disarray and there so many other problems, political and environmental, that make my indiscretion look absolutely insignificant". He stopped me and said "You can't go around trying to clean up the backyards of the whole world when your own backyard look terrible, you need to clean your backyard first before you can even think of going out into the world and helping other people fix their backyards."
@@reshpeckIf that's a quote from that person in particular, then it could very easily be that their dad heard it and repeated it because it's a good analogy.

I lost so much respect for everyone that was sponsored by Established Titles. The only product I have gotten because a channel was sponsored is Displate.
Lots of people asked _"how would you know honey is a scam?"_ You don't need to examine browser cookies or click inspect element to do any of this. You only need to do one thing: Ask the person offering you thousands of dollars to promote a browser extension that provides you with free coupon codes how they are making the money to pay you. Anytime somebody offers me something that seems even remotely too good to be true, I ask them how they make their money. If they cannot provide me with a reasonable explanation, I tell them to go away. Nothing is free. And nobody's paying me without benefiting themselves.
Honey has always been in a kind of "grey area" where it was like "obviously a free browser extension has to be doing something shady under the hood, but maybe it's just selling your personal data - other than that, it seems semi-OK." No-one could have really known the depths of the scam until it was exposed, so I'm not really disappointed about creators who have taken Honey sponsorships (as long as they address the situation honestly). Established Titles, on the other hand, was fully known to be a scam from the very start. To the point where even minutes after the first video with Established Titles as its sponsor was posted, that creator's viewers rushed to the comments to call it out for how obviously a scam it was. So I also have zero respect for creators who ever took sponsorships from Established Titles, as all creators should have higher standards and not just care about their bottom line, even though there's only so much they can reasonably be expected to be aware of.
Hey Louis I've been a silent watcher for many years, but the story about your grandpa inspired me to write this. You probably never gonna see this, but still worth writing down. As said I've been following for some years and even tho i don't agree with some of your opinions, which i think is fine. You inspired to think more about right to repair. Soo when my lamp broke a month ago, I've decided to fix it myself. It may not be a motherboard but your videos over the year still helped me to find that broken chip and solder a new one. Amd now my lamp is working again. So thank you for inspiring me and many others. Even if it's only small steps
That story about your grandpa is really lovely, I'm glad it got to be shared with the world so a piece of him can be remembered. It's rare to see such a thoughtful response to a student asking about an industry they're interested in. Modern influencers sure do influence, but it's rarely in positive ways. It's good to be reminded sometimes that the impacts we make on our smaller circles of influence are sometimes the most impactful
Thanks for being such a positive influence, Louis! I want to share a story that really highlights your integrity. Back in 2017, iirc, I used to watch your videos for the repairs and the amazing commentary you added during the process. I live in Brazil and had a MacBook Pro with a display issue. I carried it all the way to NYC and took it to your store. I even caught a glimpse of you working in the back, which was super exciting! Your employee brought my computer over to you, and after checking it out, you told him to let me know that Apple had a recall for the issue and that I should take it to them for a free fix. You essentially "lost" $200 by being honest, and sure enough, Apple fixed it at no charge. (Though, in true Genius Bar fashion, they forgot to put back one of the internal speakers-I only realized that after returning to Brazil!) Thank you again for your honesty and for all the knowledge you share

Your grandfather's (and your) attitude towards cleaning up your own little corner is so aspirational, Louis. It's how everyone should live their life, and sometimes we all just need that little push in the right direction to try and make a difference. I appreciate you. Merry Christmas!
Company: “So we’re offering you 10% of the purchase price of the cat litter, but your last email seemed upset that you aren’t receiving actual cat litter? Just to clarify, you’re cool with 10% of the purchase price?” Louis: “Did I stutter?” 🐈
It's not that they hate each other, though I do feel ya. Integrity (and honor) is doing the right thing, even when there is no benefit to you to do so. Normally, we see 'benefit' as "getting paid" in today's consumerist society. So that is why it would feel like they hate each other, which isnt exactly true. A company or person with good integrity, will retain customers that care, and will, over the long term, get paid. Louis here made this channel, and all it's riches on integrity alone (because you know, he even admitted he cant do any of the production quality, fancy words, or entertainment one would usually expect from video content).
People like your grandpa is one of the reasons I'm volunteering as much as I can, and I'll try to pass it on as much as I can too. And even if I suffer from several chronic conditions, I'll try to help clean up my little corner of the world, help other people, give others a smile or a hello regardless if it's a CEO or a homeless person. Thank you and merry Christmas.
Louis, I, an ex-NY'r who started life in one of those destined-to-be-abandoned South Bronx hell-hole tenements, where the heat would regularly go out in the dead of winter and the incinerator would occasionally fill the hallways with stinking smoke, and fled NYC in '76, loved your story about your grandfather. I really hope I get to meet you someday and maybe I will, having moved back to the rural East, with friends still living in the city. Be blessed and continue influencing in the best of ways. 🙏
I got honey a long time ago. I deleted it the same day when I tested it on amazon and amazon ended up giving me better discounts than honey. Also other than amazon, Honey gave me very little to no coupons, and the very few ones I got were like only 3-5% off.
Same many years ago, gave it a shot, took no time at all to realise it was garbage that didn't work, uninstalled. Not surprised now to know it sucked for the same reason most things do now: for the sake of profit. All the more reason to block ads and sponsors, it's nearly all scams, no point wading through them
Honey makes more money on the commission if they offer you a 3% discount than a 30% discount. Store makes more and honey gets the same % on a bigger sale.
You sir are wise beyond your years! Your grandfather affected more than his little corner of the world by influencing you which has in turn influenced me! You are appreciated my friend!
I really liked that story, and I agree with your definition of "influencer". Funny enough, that's how you make societies better. Instead of clout and popularity concentrated to a small handful of "influencers" who are doing random shit for recognition, you have everyday people doing what they can to make "their corner of the world" a little bit better.
Is there hard evidence of this? If That's true, that's horrific, but that's a big "if" Edit: strange that mods on the forum are defending all of this.... linustechtips.com/topic/1593274-exposing-the-honey-influencer-scam-video-by-megalag/page/3/
Tbf it would be a bit weird to run around screaming scam about your sponsor if you don't know the full extend. It could scare the sponsors away and they have like 100 employees so I kinda get it. LTT never stayed away from shitting on sponsors if Linus knew. For all we know maybe LTT just thought the discount code would poach the referral not like it actually is. That way I could totally understand them just dropping it.
@@kimberly4275 I disagree. They said what Honey did, and overwriting the affiliate links didn't sit right with them, so why not say it publicly? Gamers Nexus is a good example of this. When they find scammy behaviors like NZXT's, they not only publicly drop the sponsor but also make a long video explaining the situation. I don't have mob mentality and I'm not saying they should be burned. I understand there are many reasons for them to be silent, but the silence or negligence showcases something deeply rotting inside - either privacy issues aren't that apparent to them, or they are so in need of money that their judgments are governed solely by it. When money talks, nothing good happens. The same money makes you think, "Well, it's okay for Honey to sell data or override affiliate links; it's just part of business." But on the other hand, someone who bases their channel on morality rather than money might make mistakes, but they find themselves duty-bound to make things right.
You make such a great point about trauma and healing through repairing things. Personally, I found it to be the most healing to learn to repair and restore broken or unwanted things. It started from looking at doctors instagram pages overseas where surgeons would repair peoples limbs and they would restore their functionality. Some of the destruction on peoples limbs were so incredibly displacing it seemed hopeless to even try but their limbs healed and they were cared for so lovingly. After the surgeon phase I began to find things and restore them. To this day almost everything, every physical object I own, is acquired secondhand or from discards. I even make my own shoes. Not only does it bring you joy to repair and create things, it shows that we care about our world and we have respect for our lives and the lives of others. Thinking critically with an open mind can bring you everything you need with what you've already got, even if it's only your two hands and the thoughts of the potential to manifest particular necessities and/or conveniences. Great video.
I ve heard majority of vpn comes from ex israeli intelligence ,then becoming tech entrepreneurs ... I dont really trust anything is ''private'' ,never going to pay for more ''privacy'' just to get honey potted even more..
Exactly! To both @CZpersi and @Morpheus-pt3wq 🙂 The worst thing that bothers me, is - “secure” yourself when in public WiFi’s. Sure it helps to have a secure tunnel, but if you’re doing anything on a legitimate HTTPS website, the data is already secured by the nature of SSL. The fear mongering of security with their service is unbearable. It gets under my skin so much. Granted, I can see value in location spoofing if you want to get access to restricted content, but (and I do think this is just mainly because of my background and interest in software development, but I’d rather have my own VPN set up on a server that I control. Similar to what Louis has mentioned before with WireShark. If some other company is controlling the end nodes, who’s to say that VPN company isn’t selling your data right back to the people that they claim they’re “protecting” you from. Nah fam, I’m good 🙂
Most of them just advertise it as a way to watch foreign netflix now, it's funny. The average person isn't going to have good opsec even if you taught them how and what it is, they would mess it up. Even then, with vpns, the only two people should be using are mullvad and proton. Even then I'm not sure if proton have previously handed over data, I'm a bit behind myself... I know mullvad still tells nation states to gtfo though.
Thanks for this video Louis. I was depressed yesterday because I didn’t know what to do to be happy with my life after graduating and getting a job. I’ve been thinking about my future and my role in the society for years. I searched and read articles and watched videos about what I could do but it didn’t give me the click in my mind. I was at the gym while watching this video today, and I gotta say I think I found what I should do. Don’t try to change the world or shit, just try to clean my part of the world. Being a ‘good influencer’ to the people in my world, that’s the thing I should do. Thanks once again.
Nothing new with these Honey "findings". The affiliate and cashback sites have been pulling tricks like this for well over 20 years in the UK. It has always been a wild west, dodgy industry.
Caring more about his values than making the most amount of money possible, and having the intestinal fortitude to use his platform of 2M+ subs to say the quiet part out loud, the part that's on the minds of way too many people who just push it out of the head to toe the line or make the most money.
I can't stress how much I have grown to appreciate you and your channel over the years, thank you for everything you do and stand for - the world is lucky to have you in it!
This was great! I had a guest of honour speech I had to do once, and my core message was that you may not be able to change the world, but you can change your little corner of it. And in doing so, maybe, just maybe, someone else will see that and decide they're going to follow your example. And maybe someone else will see them, and they'll make some changes. Pretty soon there's maybe 10 people doing things differently, and maybe it'll never move beyond that, but that's 10 more people than there was before you started. I've loved your channel and work for a while, and yeah, your grandfather rocked and so does his grandson :)
I watched the other video a few days ago and shared it to everyone I know but you do a much better job of explaining the situation :) Also that vpn stuff you talked about infuriates me, "You will be safe from hackers because you use our VPN". I die inside every time I hear one of these channels talk like that. You are a blessing to society, thank you Louis!
Of course. I'd imagine the reason LTT only ended their contract and didn't make any video on this when they found out years ago is because it'd open them up to legal action.
the story about your grandfather hit me in the chest like a golf club against a window. it's genuinely a beautiful story, and one i wish to reflect with my own action in the coming new year. thank you for inspiring me, Mr.Rossmann. i really appreciate the effort you've put into your little corner of the world.
That is what a hero is, and what everyone should aspire to follow. Somebody who does great deeds for fame and glory, isnt a hero. It's the people who do the right thing just to be good people. All of civilization is built upon such people.
Louis, thanks for that. I am one of those that have looked up soldering kits to repair small electronics. I was willing to spend hundreds of dollars to swap out a slider switch on my PCs headset but I couldn't justify the $160 to buy a new headset. You taught me that investing in a skill to fix things is better than throwing away something and replacing it. Merry Christmas Louis, to you and your Grandfather.
Good man. Long term thinking is your job, as a man, for the benefit of society as a whole. I spent $30,000 on tools to get a minimum wage job as a kid. Spent nearly a decade paying that off, making less than I should have for such an investment. But you know what I never had to do? Pay somebody else to fix my car. Retired at 38 because sooo many people never thought that far ahead.
Going into a corner of society and not just helping, but getting others to follow along as well is an excellent guiding purpose. I may just be a college student just starting out, but this principle is why I went into tech and is why I do what I do every day. Well said Louis, we need more people like your grandfather in this world.
Always wondered why internet celebrities were called influencers as opposed to just celebrities. It struck me as odd, Orwellian even. Wish we would just go back to calling them celebrities.
I agree. I always found "influencer" name to have negative connotation which struck me the wrong way. I always used words like UA-cam personality and such instead.
@@MaaZeus I think the negative connotation is exactly why we call them influencers. The negative connotation when I call a garbage channel like MKBHD or Linus Tech Tips influencers is very much intentional. I'm putting them down on purpose.

one of the most messed up thing about Honey is that small creators were disproportionately screwed over because sponsored ones at least got paid by their own screw up.

UA-camrs are so spineless. They’d recommend shit on a stick if it paid enough. Any time a UA-camr is sponsored by some bullshit I immediately lose respect for them. They don’t care about their audience.
Depends on your UA-camr, if they rarely do sponsors and then they do one, you have a higher chance of them actually believing in that product. I wouldn’t paint everyone with the same brush

The history of your grandpa remind me of this text: "An old man had a habit of early morning walks on the beach. One day, after a storm, he saw a human figure in the distance moving like a dancer. As he came closer he saw that it was a young woman and she was not dancing but was reaching down to the sand, picking up a starfish and very gently throwing them into the ocean. "Young lady", he asked, "Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" "The sun is up, and the tide is going out, and if I do not throw them in they will die." "But young lady, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You cannot possibly make a difference." The young woman listened politely, paused and then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves, saying: *"It made a difference for that one."* The old man looked at the young woman inquisitively and thought about what she had done. Inspired, he joined her in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved." From "The Star Thrower", by Loren Eiseley Much love and respect Louis!! I have words and processes to keep those ideas away, but I can add yours to them as well. I don't always watch your videos, but man did this one put a smile on my face.
That is true. He was not just an influencer, but a true leader that left a legacy behind for others to strive to have the same impact on other people's lives. Thank you for sharing this with the world.

Eh... some of us DID read the blog list with all you hardware on it, and actually bought a couple items because you'd been using them/we could see they were good tools. The thing is... WE didn't see a need to ask you, or say anything, really, because what are we doing? Bragging that we bought the thing you have? It would be weird. So... thank you for the list, as it's not useless, at least not to everyone. Been watching your videos for decades now, and I STILL am very grateful for your beginner soldering tips video a few years back. It was good for some of us who had been soldering for longer than half your viewers had been alive, as you gave very clear, concise instructions, with lots of detail, and most importantly, showed us how to not worry about it and be nervous when working on expensive, sensitive parts. I'll always be thankful for that, as it's improved my skill greatly over the years since watching it. Your videos have always been the best lessons for me, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Thank you, and especially thank you for being able/willing to stand up so strongly for our rights as consumers/tinkerers/repair techs. You have made a huge difference, and continue to do amazing things. Thank you! o7
What I want is a "How to solder" series of videos from you. I want to learn it, if only for modding Gameboys and stuff, but I just don't really know where to start...especially because I am visually impaired and thus almost blind. Videos would help me, cuz they're big. Not soldering under a microscope is probably never gonna be a thing for me lol. That aside, I am always happy to see others remember and live what "influencer" means and entails. It stems from "to influence". And we should influence for something we believe in.
In my opinion, the bigger picture is that all content creators are vulnerable to this. Not just the ones shilling for honey, but also anyone else who uses a referral code. So even if you never promoted honey your affiliate links are still at risk because of the sheer number of people who installed the Honey extension.
It always rang my bells. But I couldn‘t tell exactly why - and as an IT guy myself (for whatever that‘s worth), I think they had a really advanced way of scamming their promoters. It appears just once more, when something is free, you’re the product (and in this case even worse, even ripping off their patrons). Thanks for raising more awareness. => And Merry Christmas !
Extremely grateful for decent humans such as Louis. Inspires me to look beyond just identifying a problem, but to solve the problem and be the solution. You practice what you preach, and you don’t just ask people how to be better but show them. Thank you Louis! 🙏🏾🐺
I simply ignore anything that UA-camrs are "sponsored" by. I view it as something they are forced to do to make their videos financially viable and simply skip ahead to where the video continues. I would never actually consider using any of the garbage they advertise.
At first I was suspicious of where the sponsorship money was coming from,so I found out it was owned by paypal, and this was when Louis was covering paypal stealing people's money and closed his account to stop working with them at all. There had to be a scam _somewhere_ in there.
C'mon Louis, is it really reasonable or fair to declare all these tubers worthless people just because they didn't understand they were once promoting a scam?! If even major tech channels couldn't do it, how could some nurse or a baker possibly have the resources to investigate Honeys' claims?
Exactly. I've been thinking the job description "influencer" is the exact perfect description because it denotes authority AND responsibility. These people SHOULD feel the weight of their public facing job to change lives, and in that way, change society, when they are using their words to influence people. These people ARE influencing people, and I hope that responsibility crushes those that can't hack it and really strengthens those that can.
I couldn't agree less on the responsibility part and couldn't disagree more on the authority part. No one is forced to fall for them. Responsibility goes both ways. That's why It's *really* long overdue that people get taught media competence. Never understood this whole "Influencer" BS to be begin with tbh.
@1337Shockwav3 every person has a responsibility to seek truth and be diligent in what they present and represent to others. It's each of our responsibilities as members of a greater whole. If you willingly take on a public face, your responsibility is even greater because you have taken a mantle of informer, teacher, truth teller. Even the Bible says the public facing person in the church, the pastor, has more responsibly than the laity, and awaits a bigger punishment for messing with people in that capacity. This has always been true. It's why kings got assassinated by their people, and peasants only got beaten by other peasants when they did something wrong. (Not exclusively of course, but overall.) Influencers take on that mantle of informer, truth teller, "bringer of light," touchstone for all the people willingly, and they should consider that when they do. The very foundation of a low trust society is the idea of "I do what I want, it's your responsibility to make sure I'm not fucking with you, straight up lying, or purposefully trying to do you harm." Influencer is still the perfect title for their job. And I hope it CRUSHES those who can't hack it and strengthens those that can. Have a merry Christmas. I hope the reason for the season speaks light into all our hearts. Be blessed.

Yeah, same. Basically, if I can't see where the money is coming from, I don't touch it. With the amount of advertisements, it had to be very profitable. But why would any company pay Honey to help customers lower prices? That makes no sense. The app is free, so the customer doesn't pay. So... where's all the money coming from? Because no such a thing as free money.
I would triple like this video if I could! Very good story with a lot of meaning! Thank you! Respects to your grandfather Mr. Jack Rossmann! Keep on doing what you're doing. Merry Christmas!
Excellent rant . You never know if or when this will fall on fertile ground.. you will save lives you do t even know about, but it will happen and be real. Thanks, Louis.
Awesome story about your grandfather. I've been working on cleaning up my grandfather's corner of the world for the last 5 years after his passing. He hadn't exactly let his house go but because of age, dementia, a replaced knee, it needed quite a bit of work. Neighbor is a plumber, I trade him electronic/computer work for plumbing stuff when it comes up. Found an awesome local carpenter to do stuff I either can't do, don't know how to do, or don't have the time to do. New roof, new siding, new windows, replaced a rotten sill, re-did a bunch of my grandmother's landscaping, trimmed all the bushes and trees(at least half of our heat each winter has come from trees on the property that needed to be cut down), cleaned out the attic and basement, cleaned out the garage and workshop, cleaned up his downstairs bar, still have a ways to go but this place is a nicer spot to live every single year.
Imagine if more people just asked the simplest of questions ever when approached by a salesman:
"What's in it for you?"
He told me that enough people ask for their money back before the maturity of the product and pay the early-penalty to be able to pay out individuals who lose money if the S&P went down, and that when that fails, most of their revenue comes from selling zero-day expiry options to degenerates on Wall Street bets. this revenue allows them to make me whole(to an extent) if the market goes down.
@@rossmanngroup Thanks for taking the time to say that. A good experience and a great lesson.

How to become a real influencer
Step one - Don't call yourself one
It's in line with "Any man who must say 'I am the king' is no true king."
They should make a movie based on Mr. Jack. I’d watch it.
Step two - advertise scams or overpriced garbage products
Which literally is 99.9% of stuff advertised by youtubers
@@savedemperor8024 You're missing the point. It is about how to become a real influencer, not a shitty one.
True. An influencer should be someone who promotes peace, shares wisdom etc, not someone who tells you to buy crap.

Well since people are so stupid & believe these "influencers" we wouldn't have that problem. They got the name "influencers" for a reason
Everytime I see a british you tuber shilling for Factor and saying they use the product I roll my eyes, it's not even available in this country!

the thing that sucks the most is that even if you did your due diligence and decided to avoid a honey sponsorship if the viewers installed it from someone else it might still steal your affiliate even if you had nothing to do with them. truly scummy behavior.
Honey should be prosecuted. Incredibly invasive.
This. I don't think many people realise they take all affiliate payments, not just from big influencers that have advertised honey

You nailed the definition of what an influencer is today: no values, no ethics, just bullshit
i think the problem is that the term is "influencer" at all. Like there are influential people, and there are things or events or forces that influence you; but the idea that someone is just "influencing" is.... well that isn't really how it's supposed to work. The Influence is supposed to be an after effect, not the motive.

You don't need to examine browser cookies or click inspect element to do any of this.

Your grandfather's (and your) attitude towards cleaning up your own little corner is so aspirational, Louis. It's how everyone should live their life, and sometimes we all just need that little push in the right direction to try and make a difference. I appreciate you. Merry Christmas!
True! This was the best message for me in 2024 (so far). Thanks, Louis
Louis you are genuinely good person. The world needs more people like you
You and your grandfather are the real influencers we need more of ❤
"Clean up my little corner in the world" - Thank you Louis, I can do that.
I'm surprised LTT is not getting hate for knowing about this and doing nothing years ago
1:35 "I would get a percentage of that cat littler" - Louis Rossmann, 2024
😆
Company: “So we’re offering you 10% of the purchase price of the cat litter, but your last email seemed upset that you aren’t receiving actual cat litter? Just to clarify, you’re cool with 10% of the purchase price?”
Louis: “Did I stutter?” 🐈
8:53 he forgot the screenshot
Guess we will have to watch the coming video he mentioned... Well played. 😂
Noone said he makes videos with good production quality ;-)
*Integrity and money really seem to hate each other.*
Don’t skip honor
Courage, duty, honor - almost nonexistent in modernity.
It's not that those don't go well together, it's that most people avoid other people who have integrity.
the go ok together, but without money flows a lot more "freely" ;-)
It's not that they hate each other, though I do feel ya.
Integrity (and honor) is doing the right thing, even when there is no benefit to you to do so.
Normally, we see 'benefit' as "getting paid" in today's consumerist society. So that is why it would feel like they hate each other, which isnt exactly true. A company or person with good integrity, will retain customers that care, and will, over the long term, get paid.
Louis here made this channel, and all it's riches on integrity alone (because you know, he even admitted he cant do any of the production quality, fancy words, or entertainment one would usually expect from video content).
13:55 hidden gem right there if anyone wants a timestamp. VERY well said!!
That's part of the scam. Websites can set a maximum percentage off that Honey will give customers and tell them it's the best deal.
Same many years ago, gave it a shot, took no time at all to realise it was garbage that didn't work, uninstalled. Not surprised now to know it sucked for the same reason most things do now: for the sake of profit. All the more reason to block ads and sponsors, it's nearly all scams, no point wading through them
It only gives discounts if the company your buying from partners with them
Now, give up Amazon or do you hate everyone including yourself?
Thanks Louis. Your corner is just fine. You are an inspiration to us all.
The worst 'influencers' are the LTT group just because they knew this and didn't make any attempts to spread awareness.
Is there hard evidence of this? If That's true, that's horrific, but that's a big "if"
Edit: strange that mods on the forum are defending all of this.... linustechtips.com/topic/1593274-exposing-the-honey-influencer-scam-video-by-megalag/page/3/
What evidence do you have for the basis of this allegation?
Tbf it would be a bit weird to run around screaming scam about your sponsor if you don't know the full extend. It could scare the sponsors away and they have like 100 employees so I kinda get it.
LTT never stayed away from shitting on sponsors if Linus knew. For all we know maybe LTT just thought the discount code would poach the referral not like it actually is. That way I could totally understand them just dropping it.
@@SuperKendoman mega lag video. Start at 13:23 all you need is there
@@kimberly4275 I disagree.
That's awesome. I'd love to see what type of shoes you made!
Came for the drama input, stayed for the words of wisdom. You moved something within me today, Louis.
Apart from the honey scandal. I cannot stand the VPN ad sponsors; being a software developer, I hate how they bluntly lie about how it works 🙄
I ve heard majority of vpn comes from ex israeli intelligence ,then becoming tech entrepreneurs ... I dont really trust anything is ''private'' ,never going to pay for more ''privacy'' just to get honey potted even more..
Like "protect your privacy" by actually routing all of your internet traffic through our black-box serveru?😂
They also tend to lie about how "good" that exact VPN service is and make it look better, than it really is.
Exactly! To both @CZpersi and @Morpheus-pt3wq 🙂
The worst thing that bothers me, is - “secure” yourself when in public WiFi’s.
How is Louis so damn based
Caring more about his values than making the most amount of money possible, and having the intestinal fortitude to use his platform of 2M+ subs to say the quiet part out loud, the part that's on the minds of way too many people who just push it out of the head to toe the line or make the most money.
For real. This is one of the deepest videos I’ve ever watched.
I can't stress how much I have grown to appreciate you and your channel over the years, thank you for everything you do and stand for - the world is lucky to have you in it!
HE HAS FINALLY SPOKEN
I bet that the people who were touting Honey wound up signing an arbitration agreement with their contract too.
Mr. Jack sounds amazing.
This is the best Christmas story I've ever heard. Thanks.
Agreed
Thanks for taking care of your little corner of the world! Happy Holidays!!!

I think people don’t consider online personalities to be “real” celebrities (unlike people who became famous on legacy media or professional sports).
I agree. I always found "influencer" name to have negative connotation which struck me the wrong way. I always used words like UA-cam personality and such instead.
@@amicaaranearum imagine people's shock when they discover there's no meaningful difference 😂
@@MaaZeus I think the negative connotation is exactly why we call them influencers. The negative connotation when I call a garbage channel like MKBHD or Linus Tech Tips influencers is very much intentional. I'm putting them down on purpose.
They are celebrities and I won’t accept anything else. I don’t even like the word UA-camr, it makes me sick.
I am glad that i have followed your channel years back and not unfollowed.
This redefined meaning of influencer is very inspiring and cleansing to what it should stand for.
Merry Christmas and may God bless you Mr. Rossmaan your grandpa will be proud of what you are doing.
Keep up the good work.🙏💐
I like your definition of influencer! My son and I this christmas repaired an old dvd player, PS2 and VHS vcr all of which had stopped working since they were purchased over 18 yrs ago (but not replaced), he has always seen me repair what I can. He wanted to try, so we worked together- sucess was achieved costing just time and carefull thought.
The 96mph thing is never gonna go away, and deservedly so 👍🏻
I saw a video about Honey on Lehto's Law earlier today. Seems to be a hot topic. The internet has certainly evolved.
one of the most messed up thing about Honey is that small creators were disproportionately screwed over because sponsored ones at least got paid by their own screw up.
This is one of my favourite videos you've made. Loved hearing the story of a real influencer. Keep doing what you're doing as all the videos of yours that I've watched come across really genuine and heartfelt. 👍
This was so inspiring! Thanks for posting this, man!
UA-camrs are so spineless. They’d recommend shit on a stick if it paid enough. Any time a UA-camr is sponsored by some bullshit I immediately lose respect for them. They don’t care about their audience.
Welcome to capitalism.
Depends on your UA-camr, if they rarely do sponsors and then they do one, you have a higher chance of them actually believing in that product. I wouldn’t paint everyone with the same brush
@@thewhitefalcon8539that’s not capitalism. It’s really sad how so many people have bought into the BS that gets labled as capitalism. At its core it’s the free market. It has been defiled as a concept by those who want a controlled economy, which is objectively worse.
@@thewhitefalcon8539 No, that's not capitalism.
People just use nonsensical buzzwords that have no application to the issue at hand and hope they get likes.
Capitalism is an economic system that, through it's own inherent system of checks and balances, is pro-consumer. A person scamming you out of your money is not "capitalism." That's called "scamming you out of your money." In a capitalist system, a business that hurts consumers will fail because then consumers will decide to no longer give them business. Unless they are a monopoly and there are no alternatives... which is illegal.
In other words, if an anti-consumer business exists and continues to exist despite their anti-consumer practices, then that is not the fault of "capitalism." That's *_your_* fault. That's the *_consumer's_* fault. That's the fault of all the people who willingly enjoy being scammed and wish for these businesses to continue doing so.
I just accept it as a reality of the YT business model.
Thank you for that story Louis. We need to hear more stories like this. Have an awesome Christmas and all the best for the New Year 💙
Love when you cover things like this like the products you have recommended that I remember were that chair, label printer, phone, and head phones I think that were all clearly things that you actually used. I tend to either skip ad segments or tone it out but when the youtuber clearly supports the products that's different.
Hey I remember the video you made years ago and the theme was “Make Your Corner Shiny” (or like clean)
I remember that video, it has stayed with me. That video motivated me to volunteer at Denver DFL for ~5 years through covid till I moved to Canada! Great video again man. Awesome message 🙂
I don't only hear your words, I feel them. From the first video I viewed of yours, you are a true influence, my corner is smaller than any platform, but I share the same desire. It feels so good to see you have made a difference and you just gave me more confidence to keep working on my corner. Thanks Louis.
I started fixing old lighting that was being thrown away. They may be less efficient, but when it one to flicker to life, it feels amazing.
All the creators that have started to shill varied gambling sites/apps is getting concerning given the ages that can be watching their channels.
Supposedly online gambling will turn into the new opiod crisis.

These days, anything and everything is justifiable in the name of "getting the bag".
Possibly one of the best videos I've watched on this platform. Bless your grandad, may he rest in peace.
The history of your grandpa remind me of this text:
"An old man had a habit of early morning walks on the beach. One day, after a storm, he saw a human figure in the distance moving like a dancer. As he came closer he saw that it was a young woman and she was not dancing but was reaching down to the sand, picking up a starfish and very gently throwing them into the ocean.
"Young lady", he asked, "Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?"
"The sun is up, and the tide is going out, and if I do not throw them in they will die."
"But young lady, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You cannot possibly make a difference."
The young woman listened politely, paused and then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves,
saying: *"It made a difference for that one."*
The old man looked at the young woman inquisitively and thought about what she had done. Inspired, he joined her in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved."
From "The Star Thrower", by Loren Eiseley

Thank you louis for the part at 16:45, I did make feel better. Not having a job despite my science masters and work experience and no results after 8 months does put dark thoughts in my mind. I have words and processes to keep those ideas away, but I can add yours to them as well.
I don't always watch your videos, but man did this one put a smile on my face.
Happy christmas Mr. Rossmann. Thank you for your down to Earth and honest videos.

What happened to the frame rate on this video
It's almost as if the camera picked up on what he said at 16:00 and decided to trash the production quality of the video.
It may be an issue on UA-cams end, I've seen a few different videos from varied channels that have the same fps issues
(Not exclusively of course, but overall.)
Influencers take on that mantle of informer, truth teller, "bringer of light," touchstone for all the people willingly, and they should consider that when they do. The very foundation of a low trust society is the idea of "I do what I want, it's your responsibility to make sure I'm not fucking with you, straight up lying, or purposefully trying to do you harm."
Influencer is still the perfect title for their job. And I hope it CRUSHES those who can't hack it and strengthens those that can.
Have a merry Christmas. I hope the reason for the season speaks light into all our hearts. Be blessed.

Cant believe a heavily marketed product with a tagline of "it's free money" turned out to be a scam
