Indeed, one of the top shelf return guests, along with Keir Giles and Sir James Sherr. We all know about the "Ryazan sugar" here in Ukraine. I wish I could afford Mr Satter's audio books, but currently my home in Pokrovsk is about to be turned to rubble. The uni where my wife worked there was hit again today for the 3rd time. It's been evacuated for a long time to west Ukraine. Genius ruzzian targeting....
Mr. Satter has a clear-eyed view and expresses it with exceptional clarity. Thanks for having him on. I hope this message reaches the appropriate national security leaders with urgency.
Thank you, Jonathan, for this reminder. The US has backed Putin and helped him for the past 30 years. US diplomacy is still a total failure; while denying long range weapons use for Ukraine because there are US chips in GB and France missiles they (the US) continues the export of US chips into middlemen countries that forward these chips to Russia for use in Russian glide bombs and Russian missiles that destroy hospitals, schools, kindergartens, shopping centers, and civilian apartments in Ukraine. Slava Ukraini!
We the people have so little control of our government. Everything is hidden behind CIA & FBI. I understand a country needs secrets but this is ridiculous. 🤬
Very good post Very well explained 👏 How do we teach people to look at the factual truth only. It just shows how important history is. Going back to the roots, then project to the Now! I send you both a smile from my heart ❤️ Michael 😊😊😊
Thank you, Jonathan and David Satter, for this very interesting and important conversation. Looking very much forward to your next. 🇺🇦 Перемоги та миру всім українцям! 🇺🇦
I was in ROTC during 1996, and I remember the prediction of my Army Instructor; which was that there would be a great war with Russia in the future. He said we were to willing to become close friends with Russia.
Haven’t seen all of the interview yet. But magnificent insights developing context and point of view. Hard to believe 25 yrs since these apartment bombings and false flags began, leading to the Putin regime. I am 77 and a former journalist. Magazines, service articles, science, etc. Not international affairs, peace and war, except very peripherally. A couple of interviews with political refugee high school students. My point: at the time I thought on my own I detected whiffs of false flag attacks involved here. Then I remember some Times articles pointing out vast incongruities in the story of pure Chechen provoked terrorism linking to larger Islamic terrorism. @nd no doubt some of this was mixed in via FSB confusions and obfuscations. Not certain tho. Still it was hard to believe that in 2000s FSB would intentionally blow up 100s of own citizens-tho accidents and miscalculations by same very believable. Wasn’t aware that there was harder evidence. What sources I saw implied, The State Dept., CIA, NSA could at that time verify, at least internally. Two points. Provoking an international crisis when your ratings drop is an old, but very dangerous tactic when your ratings drop, regime control fading. Putin has done this time after time: Georgia 2008; Syria challenging West, saving regime, when screws about to be applied following chemical mass destruction attacks-2012 elections; Maidan: Donbas and Crimean nonsense, etc. etc. Reminds me of some purported Imperial official proclaiming in 1903 or so,“What this country needs is a short, victorious war!” Just before Russo-Japanese War! Don’t know if this story is really true, but it should be. There is a lot of “Wag The Dog” in Putin’s tactics. Back to the topic. Satter may not agree with all of my vague, top of my head, thoughts, but he does a fine job developing/systemizing developing events over the last generation. More important, not letting “things” slide. The dog may come back and bite you in most unexpected ways. I I am particularly impressed and enlightened by Satter’s allusions to the vital importance of institutional memory in the play of event, even in the short term. I had never thought about this relating to events separated by only several year. But when there is deep secrecy and lack of acknowledgement, followed by administration change, then this instant amnesia makes sense. Especially with a few second tier actors in the know keeping their mouths shut to protect their careers, even at the cost of the future of humanity. Hope my comments are coherent and helpful. Thank you both.
This is an interesting take on the relationship between Russia, its population and Putin by Mr. Satter. Unfortunately it’s a mischaracterization of the Russian populace as a citizenry. Mr. Satter has a Cold War perspective on Russia, where political involvement was available to the populace. Now the populace doesn’t care whether Russia or Ukraine wins, or if there indeed is a war. There is a deep depoliticization of the people in Russia, and thus the tolerance for battlefield losses is high, not due to any fervor (other than the 10-20% of z patriots), but that the war is happening to OTHER people who happen to or happen not to live in a place known as Russia. “As long as it doesn’t involve me”
I’ve stopped asking myself if the russian mind is defined by intoxication or rather a hangover, because I concluded to both, and nothing besides or in between.
Unfortunately, one of the pieces of bad information is that good information is spread by bad people. So, a good person who sincerely believes bad information can only be persuaded by someone they perceive to be a fellow believer in bad information.
It what we are saying at all. There was evidence at the time and since, but the crime so heinous and brutal many Russians and foreigners simply did not want to believe it - thinking such a thing impossible.
Who wants to face a nuclear war? As it is today, politicians wanted to close their eyes to reality & just hope that the next election would resolve it. Hillary Clinton’s reset demonstrated a complete denial of reality. She should explain it!
@@SiliconCurtainYes, that is the way I took it. On the one hand these FSB style betrayals made a sort of abstract sense at the moment, but the horrific brutality in context was almost beyond belief inflicted upon one’s own innocents.

Apropos sports and doping, the documentary "Icarus" is one of the best documentaries I have ever watched and I highly recommend those who haven't watched it to do so. The documentary maker also made a sequel, "Icarus- the aftermath", but I cannot find it anywhere.

Another important and timely interview. Thank you 🙏
Looking forward to checking out David's books.
David is the best. I have all of his books which are available on audiobook. Thank you for having him on your show Jonathan.
👍👍👍 check out our previous conversations too.

Excellent guest and conversation! The narrative of a new Russia reset is incredibly frustrating. Evil shouldn't get a shrug and a do-over.

I also thought at that time he was out of his mind.
Fascinating
Always interesting listening to David's knowledge demonstrating the failures of leaders of THE WEST.

I dearly wonder what a Shakespeare would make of the political intrigue & murder within Putin's regime..?
Satter, maybe you missed the big connection with the September events years ago. Putin was in his 'building' phase then.
Something's rotten in 'Denmark.'
America != Truth...
So right on! Such a tragedy and who is paying the price? Ukrainian civilians. Ukrainian children, mothers and fathers. This is a genocide no question
👍
What makes you think that any of this was ignored when at the same time you say it was globally known? You don’t even make sense.

The problem is that cooked people don't want good information. They first have to be willing to open up to that fact, to which they never are.
I'm a foreign agent now Have you concidered having Caolan Robertson on?
I have actually. He’s a decent chap.
