  • Today I share how to germinate coffee beans.

This is the type of heat mat I have used: amzn.to/2o7oIDw

You really need to have fresh seeds or you won't have luck growing coffee. I ended up buying my own coffee tree from a rare plant nursery so I would have a source of fresh seeds. When I tried to buy coffee seeds through the mail I was disappointed and have 0% germination. You might have luck with some fresh green coffee beans but I can't say. It's probably worth trying, but the germination rate really does deteriorate on coffee beans pretty quickly. Once you plant your coffee beans, give them time to grow. It takes quite a while. Mine ranged from over a month to about 4 months to germinate. I have grown both Coffea arabica and Coffea liberica at this point and find germinating coffee beans from both types to be similar. It takes 2-3 years for a coffee tree to bear fruit. Keep your seeds moist, keep them warm, and wait! Have fun and thanks for watching.

Similar weather to Acapolco? Oxacan. Just north of the border. Maybe you are in the subtropical. Thanks again.

I bought a pack of organic green coffee seeds from EON seed out of Florida about 5 years ago. I only had one seed germinate, and yes, it took a couple months. But, that bush is still alive, and growing in my 17" pot in deep south Texas. The bush is a bit leggy from the extreme heat and not always solid supply of water, but it's still alive and about six feet tall.

bakcompat awesome! Coffee in Texas ! I was was born in forthood and grew up visiting my family in Alvin. I live in Hawai’i now and have farmed coffee for over 15 years, if the tree is very leggy and over 6feet, cut it down to a 2 foot stump and remove any branches, new growth should happen with in a month or so, select the strongest vertical and cut off the rest, you should have a healthy production in2-3 years, this should be done every 6 years. A branch never flowers in the same spot twice, so it keeps stretching out and produces less. Growing coffee is a slow game, good luck!

Very cool. I found a house in my neighbourhood that had a coffee tree on its frontyard. I got some fruits, planted the seeds in an empty sack of chocolate, when it was strong enough I planted it in my backyard. Now my coffee plant is great and growing. I didn't know that coffee seeds stopped germinating after some time. I live in Brazil and this plant is very resistent to the sun.

I love these seed germinating videos. Inspired by the one you did on apple seeds sometime back I saved a few varieties of apple seeds, put them in damp potting soil in a container and put it in the fridge. Too bad I didn't put the container in the door because after a few weeks I discovered it in the back of the fridge frozen solid. Do you think that killed the seeds? Do I need to start over?

OK... I've done it. I grew a coffee tree which is not a thing of beauty but if rewarded me with cherries twice and now I have 8 babies. It took at least 6 months before I gave up. And then they started popping! The outer husk/shell of the seed/bean is still attached to all of them. When does it come off? Do I need to do something to encourage it to shed the shell? I'm super excited.

Cool video, something strange happened, yesterday when cleaning the bottom of the coffee barista express, there were a hand full of sprouts, I assume of coffee. Have planted them and will see what grows. What surprises me is that only ground coffee would end up there. Also the coffee beans have been roasted. Nature is amazing.

Oh, any knowledge on west indian elm and carrisa/ natal plum?

    • @davidthegood

Good luck with the coffee. They may be too dry to germinate, but try it!
I am not familiar with the West Indian elm. I have grown Natal plums, though, and like them. I haven't seem them here yet, but there was a great patch of them at the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, Florida. My Dad has one growing in his landscape, too. We thought they were poisonous when I was a kid - I didn't actually eat one until I was in my 30s and found out what they actually were. We missed out.
If you have access to cuttings, they will root but it takes a lot of time for good roots in my experience. They did best rooting in a mist house.

Setting 200 ft of irrigation for a stack of passiflora incarnata, p. Edulus, p. Flavicarpus, ect.... and a few other money- or hopefully, money makers.
Video idea. Best things to grow for profit by region. On a Homestead scale, of course.
It looks like yall work really hard, but it is probably the best life for the children.

My birthday is in July too. I have two years on you, though.
Those passionfruit will be a lot of fun to grow. Beautiful and delicious.
Profit by region: that may be above my knowledge set.
I agree on the US. Glad to be out and I pray I don't have to go back any time soon.
