  • Hello everybody, in this video I deal with a Trichocereus Pachanoi seedling that had blackening around the base. I wasn't sure what was going on, so I unpotted the 4 plants from the pot, separated them and examined the roots, which all looked fine. I repotted the 3 good seedlings individually and chopped the top of the blackened one to take a better look, but it looked healthy inside. So I replanted the root part, and left the top to callous over, so I can replant it in a couple of week's time.

Your Trichocereus pachanoi seedlings look AMAZING, and wonderful healthy root systems on them, and thats wonderful that the one you cut is healthy inside, I have noticed this blackening near the base on some of my Tricho seedlings in the past too, I am not sure what causes it but I also think that it may be slight damage from when the seedlings got growing that causes the alkaloids under their skin to form the darker colour at the base, FANTASTIC video and info, and thanks so much for sharing Donald, sending lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic evening XXXX

Many thanks for your comment Lyn, I had a few seedlings that were left outside unattended for 5 weeks over Christmas that went almost totally purple - I presume it's a combination of sun and cold stress whilst remaining totally dry. However, having watered them during a warm period they have shown healthy new green growth on top, and the purple is fading. I think it must be a normal response, and nothing to worry too much about. More mature plants have not shown the same response.

Have a few smaller 2 year tricho seedlings I put out in the sun first time and the bottom 1/4 turned red and they started bending over. I repotted one deeper kept it outside and the others put back in greenhouse. they recovered but can still see the color for now. I suspect its because I had them under led at the beginning.

Many thanks for your comment. It sounds like they might have got sunburnt or damaged by being moved to the sun too quickly. In my experience, tissue damaged in this way doesn't really recover but the plant can still give very healthy new growth. I'm glad to hear that they recovered, it sounds like you've got things under control.
