Cleistocactus Winteri repotting and propagating

I wanted to re-pot my Cleistocactus Winteri (golden rat's tail cactus) into a hanging basket, but rather than just transferring it as is, I decided to do something to increase the number of arms it has to hang over the edge. Ultimately, I feel this would be a better fit for the size of the basket, and although in the short term it will look odd, my guess is the outcome will be worth it. I could of course be wrong - and if any of you have done something similar, please do leave a comment below. I won't know whether it's worked until later in the year, but even if not all the segments root and grow I will still have a number of separate plants to fill the available space. In this case I haven't top-dressed the soil but I may do so once I see the segments start to root and grow.

You have done a FANTASTIC job of planting and propagating your Cleistocactus winterii Donald :-D you are going to get a lovely basket full of hanging golden tails over time, I have propagated the tails before by cutting them 2-3 pieces and they root very easily, thanks so much for sharing with us and looking forward to the future update in a few months time, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle to Northern Spain for a fantastic evening XXXX

Many thanks Lyn, I did wonder if I'd cut the pieces too short but will see how quickly they root. Smaller pieces of Trichocereus and Myrtillocactus are rooting fine for me now things are warmer. If all goes wrong the original plant is still pretty healthy! 😀💚🌵

Fay Davies wrote an article in CactusWorld in December on them, she did a study on them in Bolivia. They grow on cliffs in areas of high rainfall and have spines running down to shed the excess water. Good bit of chopping up going on there 😁 Look forward to the roots 🙂🌵

Many thanks Ziggy, I should probably try and find a copy. I didn't know the spines were acting as a water repellant, they are fascinating plants and this was among the first batch I bought that got me into cacti. Looking forward to seeing these (I suppose I now have to use the plural) grow. 😀💚🐐
