Excellent review. This is one of my favorite X-Men issues. Blob going to the mansion because of Jean and telling them “No thanks. I’m better than you” is great. As much as people hate the Xavier lives Jean thing, bringing that back during Onslaught was deep cut storytelling that I liked.
I agree! For me, it showed Scott Lobdell's understanding of the X-Men. Beside Claremont, I really appreciate what Lobdell did for the X-Men from the 90s - early 2000s having to juggle what stories he wanted to tell on top of orchestrating Generation X and all the events Marvel wanted.
Insofar as the Xavier being in love with Jean thing, it reminds me of those early Fantastic Four issues where the Thing was secretly in love with Sue, but it was only mentioned a couple times, then quickly forgotten. I think they were trying to set up potential love triangles for future drama, but for whatever reason they didn't go anywhere.
Good review and overview 👏 I read some of these in the 90's and wasn't very impressed. They didn't seem so good when compared to Journey into Mystery, Fantastic Four, Avengers and Hulk. I do enjoy these earlier X-Men comics a lot more now. I do plan on getting that paperback. 👍
Early Fantastic Four, Avengers Thor were definitely fire! I think of the early X-Men books. They needed to Age a bit like fine wine to be appreciated. Appreciate ya dropping by buuuuddyy 🖖
