I'll never understand modern comic writers and their obsession with food and/or characters eating and talking. The first time I noticed it was during Bendis' New Avengers and he kept having scenes of the team sitting around a table - eating and talking. I don't get it.
Miller's DD is evergreen. I re-read it about a year ago, and it still holds up. That's the one good thing about most modern comics being crap nowadays - I can ignore most new comics and it's given me the time to go back and re-read the classic runs from yesteryear.
Norm Breyfogle was such an awesome artist. There was a lot of energy and motion to his art, and his Batman just looked flat-out badass. I remember taking issues of Detective to school with me in 1989, I was in 7th grade, and me and my friend were flipping out over how cool he drew that sleek Batmobile.
I always felt like David Michelinie was one of the most underrated writers to ever work in comics. His Iron Man with Bob Layton is my favorite Iron Man run, and I remember his Spider-Man and Superman stuff being really solid too. He's kinda like Roger Stern; he wrote some classic runs on major titles, but doesn't get mentioned a lot.
Where are you in The War Within? Full playthrough on the After Dark UA-cam Channel
Three Jokers was one of the last modern DC comics that I genuinely enjoyed. Rebirth was great in the beginning. I remember being really into Tomasi and Jurgens Superman books, Williamson's Flash, and Rucka's Wonder Woman. It seemed like they were fixing the stuff fans didn't like about the New 52, while keeping the things that worked, and it felt like they were maybe trying to veer away from the far-left political stuff. But then, like you said, they basically ignored the stuff Johns was doing to fix things, like the DCU Rebirth one-shot, Doomsday Clock, and Three Jokers. They also went back to pushing the woke stuff in full force, and DiDio kicked Tomasi and Jurgens off the Superman titles in favor of Bendis. And man, did that Bendis run suck - with aged up Jon Kent and the broken up Clark and Lois. I dropped Superman at that point and never looked back. I'd like to know exactly what went on behind the scenes at DC. It felt like there was two different visions for the DC Universe at that point; Johns' and somebody else who didn't necessarily want things fixed. I got the impression it was someone above both Johns and DiDio, but I could be wrong.
You could be right. Sine they abandoned everything that made Rebirth great, I feel like nothing has really geled since. King went off the rails on Batman, then Tynion, leaving a really good run, hurt that for me. I won't touch Superman with a ten foot pole since Bemdis. I think it may be why they're pushing the Absolute line. I wasn't impressed with Batman and I probably won't pick up the other titles. I think with modern books, for the most part, I am done.
@@ChrisMacPresents Yeah, I don't know what Tom King was thinking when he pulled that stunt on Batman #50; the "wedding" issue. I left after that and haven't read Batman since. The American comic industry needs serious work if it's gonna survive. If they're gonna continue, they need to start appreciating their real customers again and drastically improve the storytelling.
Agreed the batman/catwoman wedding as well as the kitty/colossus weddings of that time was a slap in the face. The only saving grace out of all that, at the time, was the marriage of Rogue and Gambit
@ Dude, I think during the Kitty/Colossus thing, it was the first time I ever felt sorry for a fictional character. Kitty totally emasculated Piotr in front of all their friends and family. It made it worse that Piotr's own sister egged Kitty on.
Been looking around for info on this issue cuz I got a copy like 15 years ago at some comic store for $20ish. It’s not a great copy; but it’s also not terrible. Its main damage is there’s a tiny puncture on the cover. You can’t really see it without studying the cover. Maybe like a 5-7 grade (it’s my issue so obviously I’m totally biased on the high side, so realistically it’s closer to 5). Which evidently is still quite valuable. So. What does a community think? Do I package it and mail the thing to CGC for a mid-grade? Or do I keep it to display, read and maybe hand off to some young collector who needs a nudge to get into Batman?? I know I’d have been freaking THRILLED as a 12 year old being given something like that. When I was that age, I catalogued some dude’s collection (that he’d kept in trash bags for 20 years) and found a couple copies of Giant Sized X-Men #1 among a bunch of other great stuff. As payment I was gifted a really crappy copy of X-Men #94 and I was absolutely MORE than satisfied. See, despite the issue’s quality, it was still a great high point in my early collection. Just like this Batman 251 is. And I could inspire a younger gen someday the way it was done for me. Then again, I should probably grade and sell it. I guess. Thoughts?
I'm STILL hunting for a giant sized, so you definitely got some gem, my friend, regarldess the condition. If I were you, I'd get it pressed and cleaned to see if it ups the gradecup. Then, put it in a top loader. That way if you eventually want to hand it down, it'll be nice and preserved and still accessible for future generations
The part I never understood in this issue is when Jean’s in Nathan’s mind, how is Apocalypse there too? Was that mental aspect of him a deliberate sub-program from the virus he infected Nathan with?
I think of it like the scene from the move "The Cell" when J-lo enters the dudes mind to fight off the evil that is agonizing him. Jean said in the comic that she is perceiving everything through the eyes of a child. Hence why Aocalypse looks dark and distorted
Who's your favorite member of Alpha Flight? Check out the full video!
I got Alpha Flight #107.😀👍
That's because you have excellent taste in comics my friend 🤌🤌
@ChrisMacPresents thanks. 😀👍
I remember this issue. Lobdell's run on Alpha Flight was short, but it was unique because it had an entertaining light-hearted humor that differentiated it from the other writers. If I remember right, all of his issues on this title were done-in-ones. You'd never see that today where everything has to be a 36-issue decompressed epic written for the omnibus. I always thought Lobdell was a solid writer who took a lot of unnecessary criticism simply because he had to follow in the footsteps of Chris Claremont. But I agree with you, I think Lobdell did a great job of keeping the X-Books interesting after Bob Harras kicked Claremont out of the X-Office.
That's why I have a lot of respect for him as a writer. He perservered for the fans in the midst of unrealistic expectations that were heaped upon him by the editors. I wish we saw more of his work nowadays. We need that old school kick ass writing in comics in 2025.
That dead look on everybody's face in this issue -- that's how I feel every time I read Hickman.
That's the look I get whenever I try to give a modern X-Book a read lol
I've never been a big Deadpool fan, but at least in the past he was somewhat tolerable. Nowadays, I hate that character so much - he's insufferable. The Joe Mad art here is very nice. I wish that guy was still drawing comics.
I have to agree with you. He went from being a more murderous smartass version of OG Spidey to being OMG SPARKLES UNICORNS PONIES AND MYSPACE CUZ I'M SO RANDOM TEE HEE....blarg
X-Men Legends was embarrassing for the current Krakoa writers. The old school writers are in their 60's and 70's, yet they still produced much better X-Men comics than the new crop. Sadly, I believe the Krakoa era will go down in history as the phase of X-Men that officially killed the property.
For people who once knew what comics were, I agree the Krakoa age has killed the xmen. However, this new generation that is only about "the lol omg lmao so random Deadpool quote cuz funnies" things like Krakoa will continue to exist in some form
@@ChrisMacPresents It killed the original spirit of the X-Men. Yeah, the X-Men will continue to exist as a property, but it will be a soulless zombie compared to what it originally was. Deadpool is entirely annoying. He's the most overrated character in comics.
Another thing that makes this story so seminal is that it came out in 1980. It was before time-travel stories were commonplace and alternate realities were a dime-a-dozen. Not only is it simply a good story, but at the time, its premise was relatively unique.
And exactly why any modern telling of the merry Mutant is derived from the Claremont era. Exactly why the Animated Series was excellent as well.
What did everyone snag today?
Good review 👍 I had the Marvel UK version of this. We really took it for granted that we had quality comic books every month. Looking back makes me appreciate those writers so much more now. I did love the malfunctioning Megatron as a secondary character. That guy was unstoppable with that supergun 😅.
I wish we could see a revival of quality comic book writing like this. Not everything had to be a 1,000 issue crossover event with quirky LOL humor. Back when it could either be an overarching story or a stand alone and you because immersed in it. This issue made you root for the underdog mobster lol
@ The quirky, self-impressed humor is the worst. It's like they've watched too many modern Hollywood movies and they've never interacted with real people face-to-face.
Who's your favorite Transformer? Check out the full video!
I think this was after Shockwave defeated Megatron for leadership of the Decepticons, which is why he wasn't quite himself. These early Transformers issues were good times. I remember reading an interview where Jim Shooter was talking about how, when he was a 13 year old kid, and he first started working at DC Comics - that Mort Weisinger taught him a lot about how to properly tell comic book stories. Jim was saying that back in the day, editors used to pass this knowledge on to each upcoming generation of creators, but it's not being done anymore. Which makes sense. Most modern comics are definitely missing something.
They don't have the life experience like many that came before. They don't know how to properly communicate so a lot of these timeless skills are being lost with each generation. On top of a bunhc of other stuff, this is why modern comics are mostly dying. It's a shame. It's part of our history and our mythos.
@ChrisMacPresents Agreed. I also think that many of today's writers are not avid readers anymore and take their inspiration from tv and movies rather than classic novels. I doubt many of them could get through The Odyssey or any William Burroughs novel.
@ Very true. How many times did Claremont, Byrne, Hama etc quote great authors and classic literature? We never see that in comics anymore.
You both hit the nail on the head. Everything feels like it's made for Netflix rather than paying homage to classic literature that had shaped civilizations. I.e. The OG Kravens Last Hunt juxtaposed to modern Deadpool etc etc etc
@ I think Kraven's Last Hunt is a perfect comic book story. The story, the art - even Mike Zeck's jaw-dropping covers - everything about it is excellent.
You're not wrong. Milligan's whole run was crap. I re-read it about a year ago, and it was even worse than I remembered it. It's not just this story arc, but every one he wrote didn't make any sense. The thing is, I like Peter Milligan's X-Force and X-Statix because they're interesting tongue-in-cheek commentaries on current social trends, but his run on X-Men was garbage.
It seems like 90% of the X-Books at this time were sub-par. I remember only following Astonishing X-Men and Ultimate X-Men during this time
@@ChrisMacPresents You're right about the art too. This is around the time that Larroca transitioned from a great penciller to that weird synthetic-looking style that he has now.
@SamGuthrie1977 I keep seeing that style in a lot of books and I'm already tired of it
I got The Transformers #13.😀👍
@@jamesmoss3424 Niiiiice! I'm hoping to go over 14 in the near future

@ Happy belated birthday BTW, sorry I've been swamped, hope it was awesome bro!
@@ChrisMacPresents thanks it was awesome. 😀👍
@jamesmoss3424 and I got your card today too bro thank you so much! Growing up in New Mexico, I gotta say I do not miss the desert heat, though I do miss me some good green Chile lol
The classic Snake Eyes origin issue. Hama later retells and expounds on this story in issue #144. (One of those insanely hard to find, end of the series, low print run issues.) I always thought Snake Eyes and Scarlett's relationship was very interesting and unique. He sacrificed his face and voice for her. And, in turn, she never left his side and felt protective of him.
@SamGuthrie1977 now I am bound and determined to find that issue lol. This is peak Yo Joe right here 🤌🤌
Who's your favorite G.I Joe and Cobra members? Check out the full video 🎉
That bike is badass. Was it made up for the Classified line? I never saw her on it in the original comic or cartoon.
@SamGuthrie1977 I don't recall it either. I think it's specific to the Cobra island toy line. I wish theyd have explained the line better...like what's the reason everyone is on the island? What's Cobra motivation?
@@ChrisMacPresents If I remember right, in the Marvel comic, Cobra Island was raised out of the Gulf of Mexico by Cobra Commander and a Crimson Guardsman by activating an undersea volcano. They used it as sovereign territory, and it's where the Cobra Civil War went down; between CC and Serpentor. But I don't think Baroness had a bike in those stories.
@SamGuthrie1977 I vaguely remember this lol I need to dive back into my Joe comics. I've been going deep back into marvels transformers as of late
@ I love that whole series. Especially after Furman takes over.
I'll have to check it out. Right now I'm working in filling all the issues up to 20. Just got 14 in the mail
The art is good. You are nit picking and being overly critical! The book looks good
@ericmack001 I'm old I'm allowed to moan and groan 👍
@ the art is solid. I ordered the first two issues. I’m looking forward to to reading the rest of the story
As am I. I look forward to seeing how this unfolds
Where are you in The War Within? Full playthrough on the After Daek UA-cam channel!
The @#%! words are entirely distracting. They take you out of the story. Just use the real curse word, or eliminate it. In fact, on the superhero books, I don't think they should be used at all because some kids might be reading it and simply has no place in them. I remember Bendis started using them a lot in his Marvel Universe titles and it drove me crazy. A decent editor would have stopped him.
It'd be neat to create a new word to replace it like "Fracking" from Battlestar or the use of different languages in Firefly. Would make it more interesting.
What did everyone snag today?
Ive been looking for this comic for a long time but couldn't remember what it was called

What's your favorite Alien Comic? Check out the full video!
Good review 👍 Ahhh.... I love these Silver Age books. I'm going to search for a copy of this. My first encounter with Guy Gardener was Legends #1. Such a great character.
He is definitely DC's favorite bad boy. That's why I thoroughly enjoyed Emerald Warriors and Peter J Tomasi's run on the Green Lantern Corps. I hope I can eventually get my hands on an original copy of this!
The thing is, you can relate to that art because you know it's simply someone putting pencil to paper. You can see the human hand in it, despite its imperfections. I don't even know how most modern comic art is made. I guess they're making it on a computer nowadays, but I never thought comics needed to be that technological to be appealing.
@@SamGuthrie1977 digital should be used to enhance, not completely take over. That's killed a lot of traditional inking, lettering, and coloring and to a semi lesser degree penciling.
Who's your favorite Green Lantern? Check out the full video!
I remember when DC let readers vote on this, by calling the 1-900 number. If I remember right, there was also an episode of the A-Team where viewers could call and vote on how it ended. It was an odd way of making money (calling a 1-900 number was expensive) and soliciting audience involvement. But hey, it was the 80's; before the internet. Yeah, looks like sloppy inking to me.
I remember those days, call 1-900 to talk to Freddy! lol Then of course...the other..900 numbers lol. 70s-90s were a WILD time, like you said, pre-internet so had to make a living and pass the time somehow lol.
"Alright, lunger, let's do it" 😂 I think old school Xavier looks like Yul Brynner. Great video, thanks man!

Funny thing about the Toybiz ML Professor X. Yes, it was an updated version of the 2000 movie figure with a new head and extra articulation. But, the original plan was for the figure to come with a hover chair, as shown in early prototype pictures. I can't remember exactly why they scrapped it and went with the movie figure's chair. I think maybe it was when Toybiz was doing away with bases and switching to BAFs.
@Supertron1 shame they changed their minds! At least we got this kick ass version in it's place 🤌🤌🤌🤌

IMO its not too tall at all... but, the detail is kind bland... oddly symetrical
