    Those thermostats hanging in the duct can get dirty and be a pain, but it just is what it is. I went on a call one time where whoever went before me thought they were being innovative and had passed the wire through a zip lock and zip locked the thermostat in a bag so it would stay clean. Needless to say... I was there because the unit was swinging more than 10 degrees below and above set point because the stat was insulated against the air when it changed temp. Gotta hand it to him tho... the thermostat WAS nice and clean.

    Your meter can pick up stray voltages on an open circuit since it doesn't present any load. If you really want to detect accurate voltage, you can use a small automotive lamp in line with the circuit or shunted to ground to dissipate the stray voltage.
    I've used this technique especially in car circuits where crud and corrosion can cause a circuit to test good with a meter, but fail under the slightest load.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 3 роки тому +2

      good comment, but he'd need to have low current 30 volt bulbs or use two auto bulbs in series(not recommended), since most are rated about 14 volt and HVAC is typically up to 30VAC.
      also since it is a/c voltage, some/most meter manufacture sell a special adapter to eliminate the stray voltage. although I don't know how well they work at very low voltage(probably ok though)

    • @guitarstitch
      @guitarstitch 3 роки тому +2

      @@throttlebottle5906 You are quite right. I would assume (hope) that anyone poking around inside an AC unit would have that basic understanding and apply their basic electrical theory. If they don't understand this, they have no business poking around with a meter, IMHO. Cheers!

    One of our RTUs went south on Monday, it's now Friday with no repair in sight. The most intelligent answer to my questions about it are "a sensor in the box on the roof is bad." Kitchen/lobby temperatures between 88 and 92 with an outdoor temperature in the 60s. Allegedly, the part has to be ordered, and since this is a pay-the-least-amount-possible-to-an-unlicensed-tech type of job, there's no real motivation to get the repair done. I'd be willing to guess the part is readily available if someone is willing to drive 15-20 minutes in one of three different directions to get the part. I feel quite safe in assuming the indoor blower squealing will NOT be fixed, because it hasn't disabled the system (yet).

    Does it get into the grease in the bearings? Yes.
    So grease the bearings.
    Wash the unit.
    Grease the bearings.
    Doesn't take Rocket Surgery. You can also just smear RTV on the outside of the bearing housings then wash the unit and then spudge the unhardened RTV off the outside of the bearing housings.
    Or use peanut butter.
    Technically marmalade would work too. So do chimney brushes and a bucket of nontoxic degreaser.

      Too high up in the return duct could also screw with the results if the economizer opens.
      My question is, if he's dropping that expensive ass stat in there, why not set one up that can use a wireless temperature probe and put that in the duct while keeping the stat safe

    Isn't 4 degrees of SH a little low? Maybe bad for the compressor?

    I don't get why they don't put an oil port on theses compressors , because if you wanna do it by the book , since the system was flat you should have to change the oil , but since there's no oil port what can you do eh ?
    Is there not even an oil sight glass either ?

    Forward curved fans are problems with grease collecting on the leading faces of the blades. Backward curved or mixed flow fans are better in grease environments, the grease has more tendency to get flung off and not accumulate.

    Thermostat in the duct "temporarily". Nothing is as permanent as that which is called temporary.
