Birds, but to be specific small birds. Parrots are my next favourite but a lot of the Australian parrots are in aviaries or as pets, so I feel like its more special to photograph small wrens as its the best way to see them up close.
Hello, I am going to buy the A7IV next week. I already own the GM 100-400 and would like to add a teleconverter, I was suggested to go for the 1.4x and not the 2.0x with the A7iii. With the A7IV, is there a chance that the 2.0x work properly or is it still better the 1.4x? Thanks
I have a question, I have a Sony a7 IV and a Sony 100-400 and 200-600 lens. When watching flying birds, my autofocus is slow. I can't focus. What could be the reason for this?
Congratulations, the video is beautiful! I also have this machine but... I actually had to set the overheating to high because it turned off! Did this happen to you too Stefan? Is it normal?🔥🔥
Always enjoy your videos. I have the a6700 which I love for birds and wildlife with AI chip and focusing. Question, I have the a7riii has my other camera for full frame. What is your opinion on maybe trading that for the a7iv so I have another good bird, wildlife camera
Hlo, i have a doubt .......... Will the Lens (MERISHOPP 420-800Mm F/8.3-16 Manual Telephoto Zoom Lens + T2-Nex Lens Adapter for Sony Cameras ) fit on Sony A7 4?
Great information thanks! I’m looking for a decent camera next to my a9, which does great tracking but has no bird eye AF. The a7IV will be not directly for me, but in the family I could use it well for birds nests pictures
great review. Do you think for my wildlife/bird photography ( Im using the A7Riv ) that I would see an improvement? Do you think its worth upgrading ( even though IM going from 61 down to 33 mp )? Or do you think it would be better to get the sony a6700 with its newer features instead ( Trying to stay in budget so A7RV or A1 is out )
hi great video! I use this camera with a 200-600mm from sony paired with a 1.4TC but i get blurry or soft images. Should i turn OSS off? i often use low shutter speeds for stills, like 1/640-800. Thanks
Hi ya! I'm a bit newer and want to grab a camera to grow into. I plan on capturing wildlife, landscapes and people. I'm wanting to capture moments from our backpacking and outdoor fun. (Climbing, waterfalls, kayaking, animals, ect) This camera has been at the front of my search so far, for price point and quality, and I'm curious what you would reccomend
Hi Stephan. How the Eye AF and tracking of the a7 IV compare to Sony a9 II . I have an opportunity to pick up a used a very clean a9 II for a very good price. Thanks ?
I have been photographing birds with an a6500 and 70-350 for two years. Now I have upgraded to a7iv with the 100-400 GM and 1.4x teleconverter. Is the autofocus as good with the 1.4x as without? Since birds (except ducks) are rather fare away I will use crop mode sometimes too.
Being an Alaskan, I can understand fellow Canadian😎😎 ur luv of the Sony GMaster duck hunting sound-shotgun repeater, 12 gauge out of the Sony G Master. How many did u end up taking home. Hope u had a good bird dog with u at your side!
Great review! I am considering getting the a7 IV + 200-600 for wildlife. The only thing that holds me back from getting it is the fact that it shoots at 10 fps with lossy compressed RAW option and 5-6 fps with uncompressed... Did you test the lossy RAWs image quality vs. uncompressed? Is there a lot of difference? 5 fps is not the end of the world, but it's not great either...
There is not really any noticeable difference in quality between the two. I shoot at 10fps all the time without issue. 15 would have been better but means more photos to cull, store and edit.
To my experience, there's no noticeable difference between compressed and uncompressed. But when shooting at 10 FPS, the EVF refresh rate becomes 10 FPS as well ! The camera actually shows the pictures that are captured. There is lag and big blackout. It can be very challenging to keep the subject in the frame. So for sports, I shoot at 8 FPS or lower for autofocus reasons.
Is the 200-600 5.6-6.3 telephoto lens good for this ? I mean for birds and nature photography? They also provide a 28-70 kit lens with this camera, how about that ?
What is your actual "astronomical" hit rate ? For people running towards the camera with the 70 200 GM2, I get about 70 % sharp pictures at 6 FPS, flexible spot. It seems worse with higher FPS and goes down to 30 % with eye detect and wide area.
So the a9 which is considerably cheaper is a better camera ? Im looking at buying a new camera, if you could explain why you say the a9 is better id highly appreciate it !
The A9 is not generally available new in the UK, only 2nd hand. In the UK the used A9 in mint condition is £2,100 or so and the new A7iv is £2,400 so a similar price. The Sony A9ii however is available new in the UK but its price is £4,199 so a lot more expensive. The main advantage of the A9, which I have, over the A7iv is the 20 FPS and the stacked sensor with better focus speed. However the original A9 is an older camera now but the A9ii only has minor upgrades so are these worth the extra £2,100 cost. The A1, which I also have, is a real step up in specs and performance but the price is very high at £6,499 in the UK.
dude so many people crap on this camera for birding in flight because "it doesn't have better af than the a6700" despite both have the same chip as the A1... when I saw the quacker coming at ya I knew this camera is the one I wanted. I am a hobbyist and I don't mind losing 30 percent of my photos to bad autofocus but I honestly enjoy a lot more fidgeting with the buttons and dials than touching a screen and letting the camera do whatever for you. SLT AF is already dated compared to Mirrorless' innertial guidance of autofocus
Dont EVER use the shutter down feature, it exposes those fragile shutter blades. Sony SPS folks have said live at Sony Be Alpha event, not to use this. Sony was reluctant to even have this feature but pressure from other makers having and touting it, forced Sony to have it. When Sony's own SPS folks talk against using that feature that should warn you away for it. Just dont do it. Sony SPS folks have already seen too many cameras with expensive shutter blade damage. Just not worth it for this longtime pro. I use simple techniques to keep dust of my sensor, and I dont get dust even in dusty desert and beach location shooting.. And the sensor is covered by an optical glass layer, easy and safe to clean properly if needed, you never actually touch the sensor . Cheers
I think you are being a little overly cautious. I do understand your concern and there is also that warning not to expose to direct sunlight when the camera is off. Care when changing glass and keeping the lens cap on when powered down is a must. With that said I think being responsible and taking the correct precautions does not make the feature a definite don’t use. I think it’s a great feature especially when in dusty environments. You just need to be careful.
Video needs updating. Theres no "auto focus subject shift sensitivity" on latest firmware ;( And maybe explain some more about it. You skipped over that function without any explanation.
So the "auto focus subject shift sensitivity" is apparently only for VIDEO. Might have been a good idea explaining that you suddently switched from stills to the video settings.
What's your favorite animal to photograph?
Tiger and Bear
Liger

Ducks, Geese, and Swans - I have access to a nature center with a large pond, within 10 minutes of my house!
Ruddy Ducks so far. I've got some photos in the governor's photo contest and hope to win.
Great video and solid tips Stefan!
would you recommend this over a Nikon Z6 iii right now ?
I have the new Sigmas 100-400 and 150-600 DG DN lenses. I bought both used at a crazy price and love them.
Any issues with rolling shutter?
Thanks for your thoughts, very informative.

Do you tripod whit this lenses 200-600? What tripod?

Hii.. I have a question. When you shoot in compressed raw .. is it shoot in mechanical shutter or electronic shutter...??
Thinking about side stepping from a7Riii to A7IV or get an a6600 in addition.

Try the same shot with IS on and off. Definitly shoot with a faster shutterspeed and work on your stability.

Hi! Do u know if the bird eye tracking works only with the Sony lenses? or also with third options such as Tamron or Sigma?! Thanks in advise
Yes works on 3rd party as well but accuracy will vary by lens
Hi Stephan. How the Eye AF and tracking of the a7 IV compare to Sony a9 II . I have an opportunity to pick up a used a very clean a9 II for a very good price. Thanks ?
A9ii is far superior in terms of AF. Stacked sensor. For birds there is no comparison.

is a9 or a7iv better for birding?
and which is better for low light photography? :)
I would go for the A7iv imo. 1/2 as fast but a much better experience overall in 2022 in you're a hybrid shooter.
@@StefanMallochok, thank you very much :)

What camera are you using? That seems very low for the newest stuff. I'd confirm AF settings as well.
@@StefanMalloch It's the A7iv with AF priority.
