Hate to tell you this, but the pinstripes ARE accurate. They're just wildly out of scale. I've seen the truck in person and they're there, but they're about as thick on the actual truck as they are on that toy. Very tough to see on a screen. They're also white and not silver, if I remember properly. If I'm not mistaken, they talk about the guy who painted them on the DVD extras. Apparently, Michael Bay demanded they be painted by a cholo. His words, not mine.

Mpm looks nice, however I think rotf leader class Optimus is all around a better figure as far as proportion and size. It also scales better with the other figures as well. I don’t even want to talk about buster prime, because he’s better than the original rotf leader Optimus. Especially the paint job, which includes the white penstripes that you mentioned.

To me, both are great looking but deep down in my heart, I love the dark of the moon Prime a lot more. It's more appealing to me, I love how it had truck parts made into robot parts, he looks a lot more heroic and leader like, and i guess he does resemble G1 Prime more with the blocky look and colour combination. But the Knight version of Prime does look cool too, because it's something new, something great and very badass and warrior like for Optimus.
I agree, I think in general the old designs where better because they where a lot more plausible for how they transformed into robots, like now the vehicle parts just disappear and the robot modes are a lot more "fantasy" looking rather then being realistic
the silver around the pin striping is accurate, it's just way more defined on this figure. The movie version is thin to the point that it's only visible from certain angles.
K - RAD while i agree that the buster prime tops this mpm in terms of paint and chest gap, i still feel that the mpm has more over the buster than the other way around. Namely, mpm has a better backpack, proportions, kibble management, and play features.

@Julian I get why people wanted the orange to fade into the red, but considering the fact that the chest pieces are just behind the grill section and in front of what would be the forearms, we would’ve then had a different problem being the inaccuracy of having the orange fade on the chest instead, and then we would be right back to square one with the arms still not having the fade.
The RotF Leader Prime was one of the best transformers made at the time, and is still a great testament to a high standard in figure making. I loved it, and to this day is still one of the figures I look warmly upon. However, this figure far and above is worthy of taking it's spot on the shelf. It's not really because of faults of RotF Prime, but more of what MPM4 does better. The scaling is better, the paint (even where it isn't accurate) is better. It is a toy, while not looking AS much as a toy as the RotF mold does. Even in this paragraph, I can't do it justice. I think people, like Botimus says, just need to sit with it for a while. Take it in. I especially liked it a lot more when I stood it next to the DotM Leader Class Sentinel Prime. They look good together. That Sentinel had a sleekness that the RotF Leader Prime just didn't match up with. The MPM4 really shows how the Primes were cut from similar cloths design-wise. The difficulties in vehicle mode come from them trying the utmost to get the robot mode to be amazing. I think robot mode IS amazing. It looks great. It plays great. It poses great. The vehicle mode sacrifice isn't that big a deal, because it will transform, and it will look good in vehicle mode, it is just really hard. With that, most people honestly won't have it in vehicle mode that often. That is more a criticism of the design in the movie and translating it. I think it is almost unfair to expect their to be no compromises.
I agree with you but he is not a regular leader class that his design errors can just be ignored in this pricepoint. I have sit arround 3-4 hours to get the altmode lock and tab it together for perfection (emgo's vid helped a lot) now it takes me just 15-20min for the altmode xD As for a "Masterpiece" u can expect perfection in engeneering. Look for the LT 02 KO Prime. They fixed all problems and get it a 100% movie accurate paintjob (i honestly dont like the black windows). Yes it is just a 1:1 copie but the mpm-04 should be that at the beginning. Sure you can do it always better if you have the base mold of a figure but that is another thing. I really hope that Takara release a 2. Version of the mpm04 like the Studio Series did and bring us a TRUE Masterpiece Prime. Dont get me wrong i like the Masterpiece line as well as the Studio Series. But in the future i think i will also buy the 3rd party version. I have only bought the official products yet ^^
Optimus also had the open-face look in Transformers Prime, Animated, Cybertron, Rescue Bots, & Robots in Disguise (2015). Also, I think that the MP-10 trailer will work with this version of Optimus.
He does actually have pin striping in the movie. It's just that it's very thin, and it's colour is inconsistent. In truck mode it's blue while in robot mode it's silver.
Optibotimus, actually the reason why on the engine area (infront of the cab section) doesn't have the fading airbrush is because the front section of red (as you know) actually become part of the chest, and in the movies he didn't have airbrush on those bits, but he did have them on his arms. also, do you think they should make an MPM-(insert number here) Jazz? cuz I would KILL to have that figure.
Hey dude, I know this video is more than 2 years old but you should look into Black Apple's Commander Thunder Leader, it's a massive improvement to this mold and looks absolutely gorgeous and very movie accurate, apart from the finicky diaphragm bits. I think you'd very much love it!
Mpm has the paint job upperhand but the rotf Prime has better proportions. Thing with painting is, you can apply your own paint jobs on the figures, can't really mold it again. So is a solid win for rotf Prime for me.
The pin striping IS present on the movie model and actual vehicle, but is much much thinner, almost like a cartoon outline, than the bolder striping on this figure
Just got this figure today and needed help with transforming into the truck, so thank you. Absolutely love this one. It's incredible. Easily my fav movie Optimus Prime figure.
I think this figure is good, but something about it throws me off. Especially the chest area and the vehicle leaves many things to be desired. I personally think the bumblebee is better, and that's what I already have on my shelf. I'm still gonna watch your review, because I enjoy seeing your thoughts. You're also one of the only other reviewers who thinks the rotf mold is better, like myself.
William Morizio the takara version seems to connect those just fine idk what people are reporting is wrong with that one ill know when i get the hasbro version
I really like this figure except for a few things. My biggest problems are the missing yellow paint, the grill not being die-cast, and the finicky transformation into alt mode. I may eventually buy him because I never got rotf prime. But I just got bumblebee, so i need to save for a bit.
Man, what sucks is they could have had a figure very similar to this, maybe a bit simpler to transform in the arm region, way back in 09 if they had just not bothered with the battery pack and the Mech-spin-whatever they called it back then. Those improvements to his backpack and his overall svelteness come from the fact that they were able to shove a bunch of stuff in his now empty chest cavity.
The japan version has a bit of extra silver painted in, and even on the places that arent painted, the unpainted plastic is made with a lighter gray(similar to the og rotf mold) which color matches way better to the parts that are painted silver and does not stick out like a sore thumb like the dark plastic on this release.
I got the RotF leader Prime. He was tough to transform but I was always able to get it into a nice truck mode and eventually I got the time down to about 5 minutes. I later got the DotM leader with the jet pack and he was easier to transform. This one I can't get into a solid truck mode no matter what. I'm hoping one of the upcoming KOs fixes the transformation problems...
Arrghhhh is such a shame that this figure didn't get just right. Is so beautiful but at the same time it's got something wrong in both truck and robot mode, that you explained very nicely. The colouring in the truck is very nice but not perfect. And in the robot mode... the colouring is incredible, the legs look great, the back kibble is non-existent and the forearm is a big improvement. But, as you said, the chest isn't great and the size is a bit of, but it isn't a big deal. I'm thinking in getting an Optimus Prime Movie figure because is a big hole in my collection, but I'm so undecided between getting the masterpiece figure or getting, for example, the DOTM one and try to re-paint it😕 But, great review by the way, good job👍🏻

Well done! I am looking forward to getting this guy soon. I have the Asia Premium Series Exclusive DOTM APS-01U Ultimate Optimus Prime and that thing is AMAZING! No battle mask but AMAZING! With that said, I actually like the size of this MPM 04 Prime. I think it scales perfectly with the other Masterpiece figures and the fact you can use the trailer from MP 10 with this guy is the icing on the cake. I do wish it had more paint deco on the die-cast metal parts and for a Masterpiece figure I am a little let down how some parts are only painted on the front of the figure and not the back. Again thanks for the review!
I think the best looking movie prime you can get is a painted up version of the ROTF leader prime. I like its transformation, its advanced but not tedious, and its chest is much more accurate than the mpm
Don't know where the bits to connect the smokestacks are? I wouldn't be surprised if your copy of the figure somehow didn't even have them; EmGo's MPM Bumblebee was missing one of the collar pieces straight out the box. Such QC issues sound like Hasbro level QC to me. That chest looks odd...kinda like the Dark of the Moon Deluxe Optimus.
This would be a perfect transforming optimus prime if it weren't for the out-of-proportion backpack. The chest is a little wide but maybe forgivable. The torso looks bigger mainly because of the shape and size of the backpack. The outline of said backpack makes the torso look fatter than it actually is actually shaped like starscream's, which is unfortunate.
Just picked this up yesterday at toys r us for $34.99. It was misplaced on the floor and the store honored the price. Great review, reason why it made me want to get this one a lot more lol
Wow optibotimus' MPM-4's truck mode's hood is holding really well. So there are TWO ARGUMENTS about this figure: 1.) It's a Molding Error 2.) It's Not a Molding Error Which argument will prevail? That hood is like emgo's said.. It's the vain of our existence.
I've seen that the Takara version has gotten the better paint apps shown on the box compared to the Hasbro release, but the Takara version releases in September, I believe
Sgt Sierra 1 it also helps that the takara version uses a lighter colored gray plastic which matches with the silver a whole lot better than the dark gray plastic used here.
I wonder if it is because of the Collaboration between Hasbro and Takara why the figure and really running like the standard Takara Masterpiece figures. It would be nice to see Takara come out with their own.

If you want to make things perfect... Buy the ROTF Leader Class Optimus Prime, afterwards... Buy the Masterpiece... Transform the MP to Robot mode, and leave the ROTF in truck mode... Perfect set up!!! You got the best of both worlds right there!!! The Optimus really is an MP... Lots of Moving Parts!!! Hard to transform!!!
When you pulled out the Matrix chamber during the transformation I think you hyper-extended it, I can't move it that far/ resting on top of his arms without risking breakage.

There's a TRU computer glitch that has him street dated for November 1, but he IS supposed o be on shelves right now. Also, are you planning on getting the Takara version with the additional paint apps and lighter grey plastic?
If you've heard something else from hasbro or an official source, cool. But I followed this guys release pretty closely until the Takara version went up for preorder. The TRU distribution centers put in an order, then doubled the amount on the order just before release. They've been scheduled to hit distribution centers last week for about a month. Between that and the fact that these kind of street date glitches are actually pretty common (it happened with the entire TF5 line), I just assumed that was the case with prime. Again if you know something I don't, or have info from an official source I default to you.
Prime135 1 I've heard rumors that it was a glitch but not sure if that is true or not. When a glitch is as simple as fixing a date in a computer system, don't you think it would have been done already. I also read that there has been a major recall on all these figures because there actually is something wrong with the mold. But who actually knows since has/tsk doesn't every tell us what is going on.

I'd display Buster Prime in vehicle mode and MPM Prime in robot mode. But I wouldn't have them next to me if I'm holding little guys in hostage. Otherwise, they'd take my face!

I think prime's chest is too big in this toy cuz in the movie his chest mass shifts when transforming, which is supposed to be part of the front of his truck
Great review, i purchased the Takara version. The figure is great but they should have designed it with more pegs for the windows and the door. I fiaally got mine into his truckmkode where all wheels youch the ground and it doesn't look like Megatron sat on it. The trick for me was to not peg the arms together. The window and hood look flush now, only thing that looks a bit meh are the doors they stick 0ut a bit.
Even if i could, i wouldn't want to. As i said, they are very expensive pieces and if something happened and a part accidentally broke in my review, i would obviously be responsible for that.
Aw man! And I thought ROTF Prime was hard to transform! It's not so fun when parts pop off when you're trying to transform another part of it, it looks good, but it's complicated and frustrating, cool review anyways!

If you pay attention to Optimus Prime's forearm guards, they actually do have the orange fade in robot mode.

It's Autobot symbol on the grill isn't painted because it's extremely difficult to get red to show over silver
The pin striping IS present on the movie model and actual vehicle, but is much much thinner, almost like a cartoon outline, than the bolder striping on this figure
Just got this figure today and needed help with transforming into the truck, so thank you. Absolutely love this one. It's incredible. Easily my fav movie Optimus Prime figure.
I think this figure is good, but something about it throws me off. Especially the chest area and the vehicle leaves many things to be desired. I personally think the bumblebee is better, and that's what I already have on my shelf. I'm still gonna watch your review, because I enjoy seeing your thoughts. You're also one of the only other reviewers who thinks the rotf mold is better, like myself.
You missed the step where you remove the grey pipes from the tool boxes. They are supposed to connect to the smokestacks or at least attempt to.
William Morizio the takara version seems to connect those just fine idk what people are reporting is wrong with that one ill know when i get the hasbro version
I really like this figure except for a few things. My biggest problems are the missing yellow paint, the grill not being die-cast, and the finicky transformation into alt mode.
I may eventually buy him because I never got rotf prime. But I just got bumblebee, so i need to save for a bit.
Man, what sucks is they could have had a figure very similar to this, maybe a bit simpler to transform in the arm region, way back in 09 if they had just not bothered with the battery pack and the Mech-spin-whatever they called it back then. Those improvements to his backpack and his overall svelteness come from the fact that they were able to shove a bunch of stuff in his now empty chest cavity.
Don't forget Transformers Animated , Optimus Prime had a mouth in Transformers animated.

Yeah... Let's be honest... transformers unicron trilogy actually came up with a retractable face plate.
The japan version has a bit of extra silver painted in, and even on the places that arent painted, the unpainted plastic is made with a lighter gray(similar to the og rotf mold) which color matches way better to the parts that are painted silver and does not stick out like a sore thumb like the dark plastic on this release.
I got the RotF leader Prime. He was tough to transform but I was always able to get it into a nice truck mode and eventually I got the time down to about 5 minutes. I later got the DotM leader with the jet pack and he was easier to transform. This one I can't get into a solid truck mode no matter what. I'm hoping one of the upcoming KOs fixes the transformation problems...
Arrghhhh is such a shame that this figure didn't get just right. Is so beautiful but at the same time it's got something wrong in both truck and robot mode, that you explained very nicely. The colouring in the truck is very nice but not perfect. And in the robot mode... the colouring is incredible, the legs look great, the back kibble is non-existent and the forearm is a big improvement. But, as you said, the chest isn't great and the size is a bit of, but it isn't a big deal. I'm thinking in getting an Optimus Prime Movie figure because is a big hole in my collection, but I'm so undecided between getting the masterpiece figure or getting, for example, the DOTM one and try to re-paint it😕

Well done! I am looking forward to getting this guy soon. I have the Asia Premium Series Exclusive DOTM APS-01U Ultimate Optimus Prime and that thing is AMAZING! No battle mask but AMAZING! With that said, I actually like the size of this MPM 04 Prime. I think it scales perfectly with the other Masterpiece figures and the fact you can use the trailer from MP 10 with this guy is the icing on the cake. I do wish it had more paint deco on the die-cast metal parts and for a Masterpiece figure I am a little let down how some parts are only painted on the front of the figure and not the back. Again thanks for the review!
SDFcommander actually he scales poorly with bumblebee. He should be larger.
I think the best looking movie prime you can get is a painted up version of the ROTF leader prime. I like its transformation, its advanced but not tedious, and its chest is much more accurate than the mpm
Don't know where the bits to connect the smokestacks are? I wouldn't be surprised if your copy of the figure somehow didn't even have them; EmGo's MPM Bumblebee was missing one of the collar pieces straight out the box. Such QC issues sound like Hasbro level QC to me.
That chest looks odd...kinda like the Dark of the Moon Deluxe Optimus.
Super looks like the backpack is what's adding a lot of visual bulk

Good they made him smaller. Hopefully he scales to Leader Sentinel in both vehicle and robot mode.
This would be a perfect transforming optimus prime if it weren't for the out-of-proportion backpack. The chest is a little wide but maybe forgivable. The torso looks bigger mainly because of the shape and size of the backpack. The outline of said backpack makes the torso look fatter than it actually is actually shaped like starscream's, which is unfortunate.
Just picked this up yesterday at toys r us for $34.99. It was misplaced on the floor and the store honored the price. Great review, reason why it made me want to get this one a lot more lol
The pinstripes are accurate , but I think they weren't as thick compared to the flames in the movies.
I bought some articulated hands for my Rotf figure back in the day from a guy on shapeways there brilliantly designed
I think other than being a little more detailed, the only thing better on this figure than the ROTF prime is the "backpack"
Wow optibotimus' MPM-4's truck mode's hood is holding really well.
So there are TWO ARGUMENTS about this figure:

optimus prime did have the orange fade on his forearms in Transformers 1-3, so i am still not sure why they left the orange fade on the hood out

I've seen that the Takara version has gotten the better paint apps shown on the box compared to the Hasbro release, but the Takara version releases in September, I believe
Sgt Sierra 1 it also helps that the takara version uses a lighter colored gray plastic which matches with the silver a whole lot better than the dark gray plastic used here.
I wonder if it is because of the Collaboration between Hasbro and Takara why the figure and really running like the standard Takara Masterpiece figures. It would be nice to see Takara come out with their own.

If you want to make things perfect... Buy the ROTF Leader Class Optimus Prime, afterwards... Buy the Masterpiece... Transform the MP to Robot mode, and leave the ROTF in truck mode... Perfect set up!!! You got the best of both worlds right there!!! The Optimus really is an MP... Lots of Moving Parts!!! Hard to transform!!!

When you pulled out the Matrix chamber during the transformation I think you hyper-extended it, I can't move it that far/ resting on top of his arms without risking breakage.

Check the review of a guy named Actar, he shows that in his copy there is a molding problem with the figure.
There's a TRU computer glitch that has him street dated for November 1, but he IS supposed o be on shelves right now.
Also, are you planning on getting the Takara version with the additional paint apps and lighter grey plastic?

If you've heard something else from hasbro or an official source, cool. But I followed this guys release pretty closely until the Takara version went up for preorder. The TRU distribution centers put in an order, then doubled the amount on the order just before release. They've been scheduled to hit distribution centers last week for about a month. Between that and the fact that these kind of street date glitches are actually pretty common (it happened with the entire TF5 line), I just assumed that was the case with prime.
Again if you know something I don't, or have info from an official source I default to you.
Prime135 1 I've heard rumors that it was a glitch but not sure if that is true or not. When a glitch is as simple as fixing a date in a computer system, don't you think it would have been done already. I also read that there has been a major recall on all these figures because there actually is something wrong with the mold. But who actually knows since has/tsk doesn't every tell us what is going on.
Good thing the street date has apparently gone away then ;)

I'd display Buster Prime in vehicle mode and MPM Prime in robot mode. But I wouldn't have them next to me if I'm holding little guys in hostage. Otherwise, they'd take my face!

I think prime's chest is too big in this toy cuz in the movie his chest mass shifts when transforming, which is supposed to be part of the front of his truck

Great review, i purchased the Takara version. The figure is great but they should have designed it with more pegs for the windows and the door. I fiaally got mine into his truckmkode where all wheels youch the ground and it doesn't look like Megatron sat on it. The trick for me was to not peg the arms together. The window and hood look flush now, only thing that looks a bit meh are the doors they stick 0ut a bit.

This is my favourite optimus prime toy of all time, he’s the most accurate and his metallic look is so damn good
the upcoming version of Optimus is released in september
His legs can be hinged downward so he could be taller. I think that was part of the transformation.
He knows, and he openly acknowledged it in the video. He also mentioned how he prefers them in between the extended and collapses configuration.
Let's hope they have a better version of the instructions in the inevitable second release of the figure
Mine has a factory error where one piece is placed in the wrong way and cause the Vehicle mode front to be not flushed forever
