Lovecraft was more self-aware of the contradictions inherent to bigotry than many give him credit. In both Dunwich Horror and Shadow over Innsmouth, local prejudice serves as a smokescreen - the cosmic horrors are written off as just some 'savage superstition' or 'the ravages of mixed blood', which allows them to be overlooked and to fester. In fact these same taints ultimately express themselves in the protagonist by the end.

Truly excellent Jim. Everything from the pale, lantern-jawed visage to the distinctive New England drawl.
Best of all is the tale itself, of course. Almost as if old Howard had written it after reaching the great hereafter. A purgatory, where he produced an allegorical reflection on his own life perhaps, and the 'pale poison' that is the baseless hatred and fear of other races that he harboured in life, and how this venom ultimately became unsustainable, leaving behind a symbol of unity, and an important cautionary lesson to the generations that came after.
    Very good indeed.

You are not misinformed from what I could find on the matter.
He held his families views for a good 20 years, in his mid to late 30s he was regretful of his younger self for being so awful.
He was a pretty good person. Not a great one, was pretty awful for a good quarter of his life, but when raised by racists? Children tend to share their parents views, so its definitely awesome that he eventually grew for himself. Makes me respect him for sure.

'The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind; to coralatte all it's contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance amidst the black seas of infinity, and it was not meant we should voyage far.' -H.P Lovecraft, The Call Of Cthulhu

  • @chookinathunderstorm3446
    @chookinathunderstorm3446 2 роки тому +2

For a story that was made up on the spot it hung together very well. It followed an untangled and unbroken thread along the same continuous pattern of thoughts, on one of those out of the ' bizarre box ' subjects, that Jim regularly just conjures up as though it's ' Easy peasy Japanesey. '
Along with all that, the pattern when spun, is a fascinating analogy ( as I see it anyway) about the downfall of certain people whose envy spurting poison is so pale and insidious that they are just as incapable of detecting it's destructive creep, coroding themselves and their own reputations, as are those more successful people they aim to destroy.
This is one of those stick out stories that will remain memorable to me and will be washing up against my mind's eye from time to time. I just know it.

He came in the place and she caught him staring at her, and she only knew him because her younger brother loved his work. He tried to "court her", and her father said no. Again my great grandmother died when I was 12, And this wasnt exactly the most exciting story she had to tell, so the specifics of it never really made me curious enough to ask. Though due to the mortality rate of his employees he's pretty obscure with when he pays them.
I also renamed his cat, the floofy boi is named "Patchet"
Edit: the most recent debacle involved
Kirk Hollister: a Yithian in disguise
Maureen Mctavish: A relatively new hire, mr. Lovecraft won't let her have a gun
Jeffery Davis: A southern "gentleman" who gained psychokinesis through an experimental procedure conducted at the asylum.
During an investigation into the Marsh family, They accidentally freed a flying polyp from devil's reef and it destroyed the entire town of Innsmouth, then Kirk brought it down, but it fell on top of him and Maureen both, killing them instantly.
Leaving Jeffery who took Kirk's lightning gun, stripped nude, put a pair of Maureen's underwear on and walked all the way back to Arkham laughing like a madman.
He's fine, just spent a night or two at the asylum and came back to work a week later.
Edit: he's not really ok, he's just repressed the memories

People like to point fingers at Lovecraft but don't realize that he was a man of a certain time in the United States where it was not uncommon to hear racial or unpopular beliefs like today. That aside , Lovecraft obviously was more interested in cosmic horror. For that I believe him to be the Godfather of horror. Stephen King stated he would never have followed horror writing if it wasn't for Lovecraft. I think the persona was spot on. Although he was a bit of a fast talker and very exuberant. That wouldn't work for ASMR but you were moreso than your other ASMR characters. Love Bill the Butcher Daniel Day Louis accent.

“a product of his time” doesn’t excuse his behavior. appreciate his work all u want, but it’s inherently tainted by his personal beliefs. Also, in a lot of his works, his racist beliefs are in the text

What is remarkable to me about Lovecraft's bigotry is how racist he was *for his time*; his obsession with race and purity crept into most of his fiction. I enjoy his style of horror immensely, but am disappointed in his narrow focus. There are many writers on the frightening and the grotesque who simply lack Lovecraft's profound prejudices, at least insofar as we may observe from their writings.

Yes his views were obviously bad, but people that are trying to remove/twist his work because of it are lunatics...
What's next? Removing Roman, etc history because they had slaves?

I see what you're saying about how there were strong cultural influences towards denigrating minority ethnicities at the time, notably black people. There were also, at the time, people working towards equality and speaking out about how wrong it was to view black people as inferior. Blindness and selfishness can be understood in how a person's mentality got to where it did, but it doesn't mean it's the _only_ way that person would have been capable of thinking. No matter what, people are responsible for their words and actions and the effect they have on others. It's very useful to us right now, in 2021, to acknowledge the hurtful things he said and wrote, as a larger cultural shift toward making these ideas unacceptable in society, as well as a shift toward developing an understanding of the hurtful messages that black people and other minorities get blindsided with as they're just trying to go through their daily lives. The act of pointing out "X was said/done and it's not okay" is one of compassion toward those affected by those words and actions. When we demonstrate that these issues matter, we're showing compassion to our fellow humans. "Pointing fingers" is indeed necessary at times, because there's something there to be pointed at. Sweeping bigotry under the rug, and qualifying it with "we can't criticize because X" perpetuates the idea that it's possible to excuse it. It's not excusable.

It's funny to imagine Lovecraft speaking with that accent, which is quite working class. He was of a wealthy family and in recording he speaks with the trans-Atlantic elitist accent that has largely disappeared. Great video tho!

Lovecraft's cat sure seems to be getting a lot of love in the comments section!
Random question, but this one keeps me up at night sometimes: Why would such a rampantly xenophobic person name a cat that they dearly loved after a racial slur? Modern psychologists would've had a field day with this man.
