I've been learning so much from your videos . And I don't even have a camera yet but hey I gotta start somewhere .. I've been using my phone and I wanna step up . So after the holidays I'll be grabbing a Sony a7iii just to get started .. thanks for all the tips and suggestions . Create share repeat .
Fantastic outline of techniques for low light shooting. I have looked for this type of video. New to this type of photography and it was helpful to listen to the thought process. Thanks.
And here I am watching this video exactly 2 years later & thinking wish I watched it 2 days ago which would have saved some of my Christmas light photos. Thanks & Love Jason. I love your channel & content. a6400 rookie here.
You are a genius! Thank you for using camera terms and further simplifying them for non-professionals (like me) can understand. I recently bought a Sony 6500 and I am learning so much from you.
Really helpful video! Messed around with my a6400 a couple of days ago at a village with little to no light pollution for astrophotography shots and night landscape shots with my sigma 16mm and results were way better when I edited it in light room!
Man what a great video. I love the help on how you show your settings plus do the before and after fade in. Sooooo sick. I just got a A6100 with the kit lens, I’m learning and your channel is helping, keep up the good work.
If your mirrorless camera has trouble focussing in the dark, use a DSLR. The other night in the park, 1hr past sunset, my 5D4 + 400mm + 1.4x F8 focussed instantly on a Kookaburra @ iso 102400 that I cwould barely see with my own eyes. Sure the shot was as noise as, but the point is, instant focus, @ F8 !
Shot a wedding in low light outdoors with A7R3 and 70-200GM. To say I was struggling was an understatement. I could not hold the camera steady enough with slower shutter speeds. Would love to see a video on how to be more successful with this setup.
Would love to see a more in depth editing tutorial! Love seeing how others edit, and if I even only pick up 1 new tip, then it's a video well worth watching. Keep up the great content and hope to see more excellent videos in 2020👍
Also, learn how to use flash compensation and lower the power when using a pop-up flash because it is always too hot if you cannot bounce it or diffuse the flash. Sometimes I still use the popup flash for certain photos hardly ever straight on unless it's just to add a catch light in the eyes. A coffee filter is a good diffuser. Most cameras you cannot bounce the flash like the Sony cameras but you can if you use a small piece of white card stock or a business card to aim the flash upward with an angle. Depending on your model if the camera has built-in radio to trigger speedlights, the flash popup but does not flash. If it has no radio use the popup flash to trigger speedlights in slave mode.
Hi! Thank you for the guide especially for considering APS-C shooters! Question, What do you suggest for the metering? I usually set it to manual but I set the ISO from 100-5000 range. (Given your tutorial I would max it to 3200 instead) Should I stop using ISO range or is there a correct setting for metering? Thank you!
Are you using the luminar 4 plugin for Photoshop on your iPad? Or moving to your MacBook to make those edits? Picked up and iPad pro to cut down on travel weight from an mbp15 and now you're doing crazy stuff in luminar 4 so wondering if now I still need to lug around the mbp haha Your videos are great and always hit exactly where I am up to with my photography
when you photograph cityscapes at night with a an aperture like f1.4, what are you focusing on to get everything in focus and which focus area are you using on the sony?>
06:40 Also I think it would have been nice to mention that, at least on Sony cameras, you have the metering mode for highlights, which is at the very bottom of the menu selection panel.
I always though ISO is the culprit for noise and would try to keep it as low as possible playing around with aperture and shutter speed. So you are saying if I keep the shutter speed too fast that will also introduce noise ?
Hi Jason, love your videos!! On tip no 4, what’s your preferred metering mode for low light? I mostly use spot but sometimes it expose the highlight correctly but made the rest of the image too dark

Off-camera flash, with light stands and softboxes.
I honestly can't remember the last time my camera even tried to pop-up the built in flash xD
Always disabled it.
Jason Vong NO flash.... but I end up with blur or lack of crispness where I want it. So sad

problem: super low light photography?
Me: don't take photos. that's it. enjoy the scenery.
Awesome video! A question: couldn’t the added noise at 2:46 be due to the higher iso rather than the faster shutter?
Heck yes we want that photo editing video
More videos please. I am beginner and want to know more. Thank you for sharing this and will watch your other videos 😊

Best low-light photo tip I ever received: invest in a quality tripod.
What do you recommend?
xan_diego86 Any modern day tripod will suffice. I prefer Manfrotto products.

Dropping golden nuggets here! I need a good flash now.... 🤔
Thank you for sharing your tips.

Would love more editing training -especially which settings go well together (eg you mention to both raise exposure + lower highlights)
Very helpful. Great tips. Thanks.

Love the direct flash vs bounced lighting description 😂 😂 Brilliant
Good, just discovered your channel. Am a newbie in photography.
The photos at 1:10 are hilarious. Point made!
Amazing, Jason. Thank you so much!
Hi Jason, do you recommend to use highlight metering for everyday shooting?
Really helpful - Thankyou 👍
Luminar 4 is terrific.
Thank you for this great video!
Really useful tips. Thanks 👍
I would like to see more about editing.
So solution is a full frame camera. Very nice for budget photagrophy
Hi! Where do you put your focus when you shoot cityscape? I suppose that you use hyperfocal. I have doubt about that.
Very instructive!
Happy Christmas!
Hi Jason, love your videos!!
On tip no 4, what’s your preferred metering mode for low light? I mostly use spot but sometimes it expose the highlight correctly but made the rest of the image too dark
Ferdiyan Surya you’re doing it correctly, always expose for the highlights as you’re able to bring back the details in the shadow in post processing
Nicholas Y. Hi Nicholas, thanks for the reply! I guess there’s no other way than to do it in post process then
No mention of using a fast lens, wider aperture, or exposure bracketing?
I did in my previous Low Light video. Didn't want to repeat the same info!
Love your vlog :) just bought my sony recently.
love the video!! and yes, more iike this!
Great video bro. Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Say hi to your cohost Vivian....or are you her cohost?
So if I’m using a Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens (I’m a beginner lol), my shutter speed will be 1/100?
Great video! How did you get the milky way photo on that scene, it is amazing!
Very low shutter speed, for example 15" and adjust the lighting....should use tripod
love ur vids !!
Thank you mate.
Would love to hear your editing process
You own the night sir
What does that 35 mm stand for? Is it the zoom focul length?
