I really wish there was a way to live record elements in (whilst the pattern is playing) on the 404ii, it would make it pretty much perfect. I love it, but that would take it to the next level and work better with my normal work flow.
I know what you mean, though I believe there is a way by switching the record setting to external in, rather than mix. This way, only the ext audio is recorded through the SP. Roland has a somewhat convoluted method to then record over a pattern (but I wasn't able to get it to work while recording and ran out of time to mess with it), but I just saw a Ricky Tinez video where he played the pattern, jammed on top of it then used skipback to sample in the audio. It seemed to work pretty well with the record setting set to external in! Let me know if you give it a try

Play over the top then save with skipback. Done 👍🏻
But you can also record longer samples (only in pattern mode) but you are limited to starting recording at the start of the pattern.
