Throughout the whole game he’s been deflecting all questions and tries to escape reality and uses anything he can to runaway rather than stopping. Even if he wasn’t an outlaw he’d still be a raging Narcissist.
Answering a question with another question is a technique in evasion. Or just changing the subject. Definitely a narcissist, his ego was out of this world.
One of my favorite subtle moments in the game is when you find the morphine needle in Swansons bible. I think it’s incredibly symbolic of their situation and misuse of faith like a drug. The Bible is a book of faith and introspection and the way Dutch uses Faith as a drug for himself and to make people is disgusting. Since hope/faith is infinite and is something that one doesn’t have to hold too much accountability was always disturbing to see in the game and once Chapter 6 is over he’s lost all faith in anything. And in RDR1 Dutch is indescribable as a being on earth, cuz doesn’t appear human at all
