@@masterjerry5442 I run a olds drag car and have ran a lot of different combinations and that 72 has a lot done to it hidden on the inside. A hemi mopar is better in every way shape and form. Olds have horrible oil drain back, tiny bore 4.125, small valves, and horrible exhaust passage to say the least. And this 72 should be a 8.5:1 compression dog, the exhaust outlets are 2 1/4'', My car is 300lbs lighter than this hurst and he is running faster than I did with a 10.7:1 compression 488 olds stroker with C heads with some work done to them. @@sauniergmail I was running bottom 12s trapping 110-115 with a D port 455 Pontiac in a 3900lb race weight 79 Formula with 4.10 gears in the 1990s. With 3.42 gears it ran 11.5-11.4 and trapped 118-120mph because it was pulling well beyond the 900ft mark. That was with a stock L88 converter in a Th400 and a cam that was slightly longer duration than the 068 4 barrel cam, but smaller than the 744 RA III cam and on a 108 rather than a 114 LSA. Headers and a tighter LSA are not going to add 100whp, besides the RA style manifolds will run pretty much the same times as the cheap Summit 1 5/8 headers I had on it. The W30 manifolds work just as good as the cheap headers I run on my D ports.
I got my 4000lb 70 GTO to run mid 12s at 105-110 with a 8:1 compression 455, stock converter not even the L88 one with 1900 stall I ran in the other car, and 2.93 gears. It had 5C smog era heads on a cast piston stock rod short block, and an UltraDyne 068 copy with a 108 LSA, blowing through the cheap Summit headers. Qjet and stock intake with HEI.
The G headed 455 Olds will run just as well as the A C or E headed 455s, and the W30 stuff helps them out a bit.
I ran into other guys running slower with 455s and some running 350 and 427 chevys who pulled the 455s out because they couldn't get them to run or because they spun them too hard and chucked the rods out. They all asked how much I was spraying it to run faster than they were. It doesn't take much to make a 455 run hard, be it Olds Buick or Pontiac, but going with a single plane intake, a big cam over 240@.050, a 3500+ stall and 4.10 or deeper gears is a sure way to run high 13s with one of them unless you work the heads over and run lots of compression... and then the 4.10s will still limit how fast it runs and slow it down from a 3.08 to 3.55 gear, the 3.73 slows a couple mph and runs the same ET, so all it does is make for more revs going down the highway.
Make it do what it was intended to do and do it better, then the BOP 400+ inch engines will run damn hard. Try to make it run like a chevy with deep gears, big stall, single plane intake, and spin the snot out of it and you are going to need aluminum heads that flow at least 310cfm. I have one of those too, it made 520ftlbs on a chassis dyno at only 3000rpm, and its making 700ftlbs flywheel at 4500-5000, so even with a 270@.050 solid roller and a Victor holding up a 1050 Holley, its still making ludicrous torque down low.
I can see a W30 running those times easily if you get it to hook and know what it wants. I did it with garden variety stuff 25 years ago, and my junk is faster now.

I raced , lets see....a 65 442, a 67 442, a 68 Hurst Olds, and a 70 w30...my friend had a 1972 442 w30..so I can tell all the nay Sayers that the times and MPH that this car in the video is entirely possible and still pass NHRA stock rules...I know, I have done it. One thing nobody understands is NO Magazine, Except a short lived east coast mag ''HI performance Cars'' Ever tested What I would call A true 1970 W30! So nobody knew what kind of times they COULD turn if ordered right. ONLY 147 REAL made to race, light body cars were ever made! That being a , Post coupe [lighter body than hard top] 4 speed, No Power Brakes, No Air, and 3.91 axle. Most all tested cars were Hardtop 3700lb with automatic trans or had a/c or had power brakes, ANY of the aforementioned options [not including hardtop] got you the smaller cam [308 duration adv] The big dog 328 duration cam did not Idle well enough to work with the options. Even the Quadrajet carb had no power valve/ primary metering rods because not enough vacuum existed to close it! But , as mentioned, Hi perf cars were impressed by one at a new jersey track..no doubt with a good driver, turning 12.9S with nothing more than a pair of Hard wall slicks on a stock car. They made a project out of this car and with a set of headers a sett of secondary metering rods ,adjustable push rods [for zero lash] a set of D102p Corvette points , removed front sway bar bushings and 90/10 front shocks, they got the car to run a best of 11.91!! My own 1970 w30, while not stock, I could drive it 60 miles to the drag strip and run 10.20 thousand foot and 11.30's 1/4 mile with 11.00/31 slicks ...My friends 72 W30 was built to be a NHRA stocker...but man..a balance and a blueprint later from Joe Mondello and some suspension goodies that car was incredible! Just because it's an Olds, dont sell it short! Matter of fact we are still racing a 455 in a 86 cutlass today!

No way that this is anywhere near accurate.. Look at horsepower and weight ratings is indicative, too. When you look at fastest muscle cars the Corvette is rated 14th, Road Runner 15th, Buick 16th and Trans Am 19th....so where is this Olds rated ? 45th !!! Olds was running 13.88 at 96mph (yep that was quite a bit slower than what we saw) I call BS on this !!!

cars rated over 400hp if they are reasonably close in weight and reaction times are reasonably close. How could that happen unless the 400hp rated cars are not getting that much horse power to the ground?

  • @terryschnereger8531

I don't get how that 71 Olds can clean house. By 71, compression ratios dropped along with hp. Those other cars other than the Super Duty would've given that Olds a run for the money.

I'm quite surprised at the outcomes in most of these races, i know the rules for this class, that many pieces can be massaged for better performance. But the Biggest Disappointment for me is that there weren't any Ford's to beat up on that Olds. The Stage 1 Buick should any day of the week run much better than the Olds, heck the Hemi should of beat it. Maybe he just took better advantage of the rules, and he can really drive it. I don't remember those 455 Olds Engines taking out any of the other Muscle Cars back in the day. He was lucky there wasn't any 71 Boss 351 Mustangs with that Nasty Cleveland or any 427 Ford's or the Mighty 428 CJ there on this day. It would be a different outcome.

You obviously don't know much about cars!!! The Ford 427 medium and high riser were great motors but the 428scj were never that quick, neither was the boss 429 as it had to be heavily modified to get any power out of it the boss 351 was pretty quick for that year but that was really about it, the fords never really had the torque to keep up with the Oldsmobiles, Buicks, six pack mopars, the olds was dominant in its day and apparently still is!! Oh and by the way wasn't Warren Johnson in his olds with an Oldsmobile drce motor that took the title away from Bob Glidden and dominated pro stock for 20 years in pro stock?? Or was it 25 years???

It was Bob Glidden that dominated for years, usually being the only Ford in competition. Never said anything about the Boss 429 being a great engine. And the 428 CJ was a great engine for the Street Stoplight to Stoplight racing.
