I loved how the cgi version seemed more like a fan girl meeting her idol then some new blood thinking she’s the best thing since sliced bread

Classic Ollie was upset to realize her time might be done, and ended up lashing out, but in the end she was happy to pass the torch, er, flower, to Modern Ollie.
I like how Modern Ollie wasn't some cocky upstart, she was super jazzed and happy to meet her predecessor, like a huge fan.
And in the end it looked like they were shaping up to have a mentor/student friendship, which was kinda sweet.

LOVE how instead of a skeleton, her wire frame was used!
What a great way to show how the gap between CGI and traditional animation, as well as remakes and their originals, can be bridged by their similarities rather than seperated by their differences. Very fun ideas and solid execution. Great work to the entire team on this!

Cgi and 2d animation*
Traditional animation is not going extinct, it just grew up. Plus it takes time to make it and perfect it.
I doubt traditional and 2D animation will ever be obsoleted and shouldn't either. Traditional animation and animation that 2D should always still exists, even computers and such are going be involved. Especially that these CGI characters started out as hand made drawings before eventually becoming CGI.

If that’s true, name 1 dreamworks movie in 2D after boss baby
Tell that to all those 2D animation studios shuting down.
I found this so relatable. I'm a small artist, who loves making OCs and the like, and sending them on adventures. But a lot of my characters were originally created when I was like 7 or 8, and I always tell myself to never forget where they came from. This film is AMAZING! I love the characters!
Aww man it's great to meet someone else who kept up with their young childhood characters! A character of mine from when I was about 3 now has a webcomic and I'll never quite drawing that dork.
@@thejimmysofgatsby do you have a link to it
I like to imagine the animator comes in and is like "I didn't fucking model the flower yet" and goes over to the room over and just says "HEY, DID YOU MODEL THE FLOWER?" and everyone is just confused as for how she got the flower.
Then one looks in the flip book
And notices that the character they used for inspiration is now missing a flower and that there are new pages where there were none before further confusing everyone
Just wait until he sees the editing history on either end
Yep and that's a plot twist ending!
I love when lore gets added through the comments.
Lol
Or maybe they’ll say “Eh, it actually looks pretty cool!”
The studio on itself is its own character. Props to the people who worked on this.
This film is a love letter to animation.
I have to agree with you Destiny. Lots of animators started out by drawing their favorite characters and now, many of those characters are classics or dated. It can be bittersweet to see your favorite characters tunred into something new. Much more to animate the new version yourself, I'm sure.
Animation, and the evolution of it.
I'm always a sucker for 2D and 3D animation being merged together, like with Disney's Get a Horse short. A great commentary on character reboots and how, despite being ridiculed by those who grew up with the original design, the new one will also be in the hearts of many.
Take the Mickey Mouse shorts
Basically they combine the classic 2D Style with some wacky shenanigans
...and sone sprinkle of 3D Stuff in there whenever possible
All of those things just bend together so nicely
What about Mickey Mouse and his predecessor Oswald the Lucky Rabbit?
Sonic the Hedgehog taught us well.

@@bradpotts1747 I would say that for 2D/3D fusion Dreamworks' Sinbad is an even better example than Treasure Planet.

I’d so watch this if it became a show or movie😁
Honestly I'm wanting a show or series. It can be easily spun into a Tom & Jerry or Mondo mini-show genre. But what really makes this shine is it's wholesome portrayal of feelings. If they found a way to incorporate that, a show would be absolutely awesome.
That note on the corkboard: "Don't forget: Ollie is ESSENTIAL to Olivia!" In other words, remember your roots, and don't forget where you came from.
0:34 Every serious coder has a note on their computer that says, "Don't forget to SAVE!!!!"
That was pounded in my head and i still to this day forget to save 🤣🤣🤣
I press Ctrl+S even out of Blender (the software i goof with).
And boy, i tell you i appretiate it
Ah yes the year is 3532 and coders still forget to save five hours of work.
THIS is what I like to see...paying homage to old school traditional style animation while melding CGI together, the idea is just perfect and is accompanied by a genuine heartfelt story. Excellent plot device which showcases emotions working with one another to create a viable atmosphere and depth I have not seen in a animated short since Pixar's works. Congratulations to the team who made this animation possible, as a lover of animation old and new, you give hope for a bright future to animation and to animators alike...keep doing your OWN thing and never give up making that magic, you made me feel like a kid again watching this and I cannot thank you enough for that.
It’s like a Mickey Mouse character meeting a zootopia character... I love it!
Yo that would be a really cool short
Mickey versus Judy hops be like
except they're all otters
Funny cuz one of the main characters in Zootopia who went savage is an Otter
Imagine Judy and Nick watching "Education For Death" and reacting to the scene of the fox devouring the rabbit.
Watching Ollie and Olivia interact was really fun! The 2d vs 3d/redesign theme really hit home.
This really gives me some Epic Mickey vibes.
Ikr!! Mickey and oswald rivality
Yeah
Such a great game..
Wish they finished the trilogy...
Putting the Olivia Funko Pop in there was a brilliant little detail. XD
I was the one who shared this on Twitter. I'm happy that it has gotten so much attention, and I see a bright future for everyone who worked on this. I would actually like to see this short get turned into a movie.

Thank you so much! My daughter was on the team that created this wonderful film.
Ollie was feeling what alot of people were saying about 2D animation when Pixar was releasing all their movies. "2D animation is dead. 3D is the way of the future" and so many other animation studios also gave up 2D for 3D. how many 2D movies do you see anymore other than anime?
But 2D is not going extinct. it's just not around as often as it used to be. if anything, there are things 2D can still do that 3D can't. (Art styles for one example. there are some that just look terrible in 3D. There are even some 3D movies that look better in 2D in my opinion) 2D animation will be around for a long time. there will always be someone it appeals to
I feel like the lesson here is to “Never forget where you came from; accept the changes to the new you, and don’t let your future overshadow your past.”
This short film integrates traditional animation in a 3D computer animated world.
They should nominate this gem for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film!
This is so awesome 💕💖💕💖🥺

Hello, Jackson.
What are you doing here jakeneutron
Well hello and yes i agree this is really amazing and i love the message they portrayed
This actually reminds me of two things really.
1. The Pixar short "Night and Day" classic mashup between CGI and original Disney animation, as well as polar opposites
2. The hinting towards Mickey Mouse and Judy Hopps, the unspoken argument on who's the more influential character. The comparison of the two was actually something I realized up until now. AKA: 1920s animation Vs. 2020s animation
It looks good, I will admit that the animation on Ollie looks limited, but still well made, and also, is kinda like a representation of an old version of one character reacting to its redesign, you really did a great job with it
I love this. It reminds of me how I used to watch old cartoons with my grandfather as kid alongside modern cartoons and loving both. Great job.
The rebooted Ollie Otter looks like a “Zootopia” character.
That was a super fun short! it was a really cool idea to have a character face their rebooted self, and I'm glad this wasn't just a "reboots are bad" thing, and respected both the original and rebooted versions.
Plus it was fun to watch them fight
As a Floridian I'm proud to see something like this come out of UCF. Good job guys and keep up the good work.
My biggest flex is I know one of the creators in real life, of this animation :D
I love this short animation that features CGI and 2D rubberhose cartoons together. Its cute and filled with emotions of how cartoon character really feel. Disney co. why couldn't you make movies like this anymore!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hey there Folks. It's really exciting to see something like this kind of animation come out of UCF. I'm an alumni from 15 years ago and we never had anything quite like this shown off. I hope you all go far in the world of animation. it's not just for studios anymore and you all really show that's definitely true.
Phenomenal work, all of you.
I have rewatched this short so many times. It is that amazing! 😍
This made my day. Thanks, everyone.
If we cannot remember where we came from, we cannot know where we are going. If we cannot accept where we are going, we cannot go on.
This needs to be seen by more people
I would love to see those two get a series of 3D cartoons and 2D cartoons living together and learning about each other’s lives and what they can do
What else needs to be said that hasn't already? It's amazing! I love the seeing the idea of classic vs modern stylings of a character going head to head to see who's the better one only for them to realise that they are one in the same.
Amazing work, team!!!
This is amazing, let’s hope they don’t find out about anime.
Is this supposed to be funny I don’t get it
@@mangumsopus8107 Anime is popular, and we saw the old style try to kill the new one. Imagine how they would react to a more cute version of the otter.
@@Cashes599 it's... Still unfunny.
Actually funny or not, that could be an intriguing storyline for an episode. TMNT got turned into an anime (it was really good too), and even the Animaniacs made some gaffs and nods to reboots with anime. I think that would be a fun sequel. It did occur to me after watching this the first time what the 3D Olivia would do if she found out she was going to be replaced by a newer cutsier version. And your thoughts about anime would fit right in there with a Hello Kitty or kawaii theme. It would be fun and interesting to watch.
It’s too late..
i like how this takes place in june 2021
I loved how you showed the difference between the old world and the new world! Also to show how cartoons were before until now 😍💖❤️💗
This is the short film I had been hearing about non stop for almost 2 years now! One of the first friends I ever made at UCF got lucky enough to land this adorable short, and I couldn’t be more proud of her. The entire team worked day and night, and even through a pandemic to bring us this adorable, funny, and touching story. I hope everyone on the team is proud of themselves, and is able to go far with what they have created here!

See you all in a few years when this blows up.
The high squealing noises that I made at midnight watching this adorableness are not to be replayed, for the world is not ready.
i love the message of remakes being able to coexist with the original substance! The animations and idea are very well done, this was so amazing
the battle between old and new.
now this is art.
I WISH modern cartoons were like this. This is perfect.
now i kinda wanna see this as a real show
Love this sweat Mix between 2d and 3d. And of cause the little note with: Don´t forget to save
I like the implication of a lack of telling the whole picture but also showing that even though people may make big mistakes they can undo them. In time at least.
I want more of these two 🥺❤️
Wow, this is an amazing short film! The transitions, the idea, the different styles presented, just everything about this is perfect!!!
Wow, thank you!
OMG this animation reminds me of an omage to Babs bunny's "Tiny Toons" episode: -Fields of Honey- which was all about Honey and Basco cartoons of the black and white era in toon town and how they were brought to remembrance by Babs who refused to allow there legacy to die.
This was such a good animation and so awesome. I hope to see more of it.
incredibly impressive! that spinning hug near the end was so well done
This is absolutely incredible. The interaction between two types of animation, the shot composition, the attention to story detail... The bit of Ollie remembering the undo button is particularly nice, I didn't even realize that was a set up for the end! As someone that is trying to create an otter character atm, this is also very inspiring! You all worked so hard on this and it shows, congratulations.
The amount of work combining 2D animation and 3D animation is very amazing. it's a good interaction and possibly an inspiration for other cartoons and animated movies that had ths before. Amazing work on all of the artists and individuals who worked in this fantastic animation. ;)
HOLY FREAKING HECK, that was absolutely amazing! Everyone did an amazing job at this! I really enjoyed the concept of a 2D character meeting his/her 3D counterpart, it was well executed.
This is SO good and so clever! I really adore how the music flip-flops between modern or jazzy, depending which version of the character is on screen!
Love how you used the keyboard's changing lights for dramatic effect
this really brings in how animation fans are today, change can be hard but we will always remember how it started. ❤️
also the 2d Ollie reminds me of Spinel from Steven Univese
To be honest, I thought the same thing about the Steven Universe thing. Very cartoon, emotional but fun.
The passing on of the flower was perfectly built up to.
The concept is great, and I liked that there were no spoken words, glad it was recommended to me!
Perfect passing the torch story, from 2D traditional animation to CGI, really cute and touching short, great job on this.
Your video going to have a million views! And I love the animation
I could see this as a show
Thank you for your inspiration. I will remember you video by heart.
This is really good! This definitely deserves more views! :)
This was phenomenal!! The symbolism of the flower was just perfect! Wonderful work!
I love how you captures the battle of 2D vs 3D thats been going on for years and even among professionals.
Very well done. Good job to all who have spent so much of their time for this film.
The sinister lighting coming from the keyboard was a lovely touch
This was genius. 2d and 3d animation looks so good together.
This is so beautiful, ❤️!
I'm here before the million views... Great job!!
This was a fantastic little short
I love it I’m a fan of rubber hose and it always makes me smile when it’s used in new stuff
I loved this! The dynamic between the two characters was phenomenal! And I love how the keyboard turned colors to signify what was come! Excellent job!
does encapsulate the redesign of classic characters. Plus it's a perfect example of 2D + 3D animation, with a good story structure, enjoyable and easy to follow.
I want this to be a full lenght animated film.
Beautiful & Adoracute short. 💙 seeing a 2D & CG character interacting with each other.🙂
Mixed CGI and traditional animation is kinda neat
This is the most heart warming thing I've ever seen
I loved this. Y'all made an old man happy.
This is so funny, the use of classic gags from both 2D and 3D is great. The parts where they're blended (like the electric buzzer showing Olivia's wireframe or the anvil getting ctrl-z 'd) just cracked me up. Seeing the two characters interact was fun, and I'm even more impressed after taking a 3D-animation beginner class this year and realizing how hard it is to blend 3D with composited drawings like that. Very impressive, I love it!
Best thing to come out of my recommendations today
2d in a 3d environment sparks feelings that aren't possible
i love this animation great job you ollie and olivia otter!

So the 2-D Ollie character gets knocked unconscious with an anvil and has visions of tweeting.....fish?! 🐠
I want more of this, this is golden.
She can also check the trash bin but she's a old school cartoon she probably doesn't know how to do that absolutely love this video
Omg I love this so much I'm crying 😭 ❤️❤️
I like how you had both 2-D and 3-D versions of the same character interact with each other! Doing animations like that is hard but you made it work for your video. I like the meaning of the story, great animation!
What a beautiful short
My gosh, this is absolutely incredible, so incredibly fun and creative and wonderful! Absolutely fantastic work! 💖💖💖👏👏👏
Thank you so much!!
So amazing I hope people can appreciate these type of medium animation
absolutely adorable- the creators’ time and effort has definitely paid off with such a great product like this 💖💖
This is fantastic! This feels like there’s some Spider-verse influence, but it’s way more meta.
Side note, anyone noticed that both Ollie and Olivia are pictured with Fox girlfriends?
I'm gonna have to rewatch it now! No complaints!
I can't tell if I missed it or not, but I rewatched it and I couldn't find it, do you know where?
