It’s hilarious how many naturals are upset that people struggled more with natural hair than relaxed. Y’all have to realize that everyone’s hair is not the same even if you have the same curl type. Y’all are saying she’s being ridiculous that it took her hours to wash her hair, but it’s her experience and many others’. Who are y’all to shame her for preferring relaxed hair? I agree with all of these! I recently texturised my 4c hair after being natural since 2014 and have found all of these to be true. Something funny is that I often hear people say a pro of being natural is that you no longer have to run from the rain or worry about your hair reverting, but I found it was the COMPLETE OPPOSITE when I was natural! The only way to keep my hair from knotting up horribly when I was natural was to keep it stretched with a twist out/braid out, but at even the slightest hint of humidity, my stretched style would be a bird's nest. I remember taking out a twist out on a particularly hot day, and by the time I'd taken out all my twists, my hair had already started reverting and knotting. Simply put, A MESS. Now with texturised hair, twist outs stay defined for way longer. I truly admire women who can make coily, dense, fine-stranded 4C hair work as a natural, but it just wasn't for me.

    • @goodwork887
      @goodwork887 Рік тому +1

I'm newly a loose natural, after decades with easy to maintain dreadlocks that I tired of. I definitely note what you're saying. I live in a very humid place and can't blow out my hair for months at a time simply because it will revert into knots as soon as I walk out the door. LOL
Even with twistouts, I have to leave them twisted to within a couple days of my intending to wash and start over. The humidity really means that the only thing that works all summer is braids.
I'm looking forward to my first Fall/Winter and being able to blow dry regularly. I have a Revair, so that's just 10 mins. to dry and straighten, with no roughage/breakage, after washing and conditioning.

I stopped relaxing my hair back in 2008, because of the chemicals. If the chemicals ONLY touched the hair, I might still be relaxing, but because those poisons touch the scalp, I had to let it go. I still, predominately, wear my her straight tho. Modern flat irons work straitening magic, and my hair is longer than I was ever able to get it back when I relaxed.

Interesting, I think some of your reasons are the exact same reasons I went natural. After being relaxed my whole life, I decided to go natural three years ago and it’s the best thing for me.
The convenience of wash day. Now that I’m natural I can wash my hair whenever I feel like it during a shower. Whereas with relaxed hair I used to make sure I avoid any contact with water because straightening my hair again would be a hustle.
I don’t know how people think relaxed hair is more versatile than natural hair. I have bleached, coloured my hair more than I did when I was relaxed. The difference this time is my hair is more resilient to the chemicals.
My wash days are 45 minutes max (including deep conditioning). I have one or two spur of the moment washes during the week. These can be co-washes or simple shampooing. They don’t add much time to my shower time.
The only time I really get knots and have to intensely detangle my hair is when I’ve been rocking the shrinkage look for a week. That’s not often plus using a detangling brush makes that achievable in my 45 minutes wash days. Let’s not act like we don’t need to detangle relaxed hair after every wash. I know I did because my hair would have knots after drying it with a towel.
Having natural hair is not as much of an inconvenience as influencers make it out to be. And relaxers are not the answer to avoiding wash days.

A lot of big natural hair influencers are relaxing their hair now which is completely fine. What's weird is how everyone whose relaxing now is making it seem like natural hair is the hardest to take care of & maintain...it's been drilled so much into our heads how our natural hair is so difficult to deal with, which I understand. Even though I'm natural for almost 5 years, I love watching videos about ladies who have gone back to relaxers! I have thick 4c hair, bra strap length, and a blow dryer is a necessity to avoid too many single stand knots and to speed it wash day. It takes me a little over 2 hours to wash, detangle, condition, blow dry, and twist, but I don't mind. I definitely understand the convenience factor of relaxed hair, but it's been so long that I wouldn't even know how to do my hair if I went back to relaxers lol. I wasn't that great at maintaining it back then!

Honestly I used to relax my hair when I was in middle/high school and now as an adult I do keratin treatments which is as natural as I can go. But honestly this is refreshing to hear about. I probably would never go back to relaxed hair but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I think about doing it often. There’s just such a convenience to it. No shame in whatever you decide to do with your hair. Get the relaxer if you want it! Or be natural or somewhere in between like me. No shame!! You’re the one that has to deal with it everyday, so do what fits your lifestyle best

    • @goodwork887

The only think that makes me think I'll never go back to a relaxer is the stress of dealing with new growth and needing to pay someone to relax it for me. If I could relax my hair once and just have it be that way after that, I'd probably do it. But the fact that it will always grow out how it intends to be makes me resign myself to making something of that that I'm able to do myself. Not wanting others doing my hair is #1 priority to me. But definitely all her points in this video are things to love about relaxed hair. Everything comes with pluses and minuses.

First, Your hair is AMAZING!! I can tell you are really enjoying it which in my opinion is the point of hair, to have fun with it. Personally, I have been natural since I was like 10 years old. For 5 or six years, I had locks. For me, finding Black Gurl Curls has been a life saver. I am still shocked to hear that people spend 5 hours washing their natural hair. Black Gurl Curls has taught me that that's not normal. Your experience with natural hair is what I would call "old-school" approach to natural hair. Today, there are experts/hair stylists that are certified that make natural hair the easy way. I spend about an hour an half to wash, style, and dry my hair. I do this every 5 days or so and my hair has been loving it. I am curious to know your thoughts on Black Girl Curls compared to what you knew about natural hair. (For example, thinking that braids are a protective style and that having our hair out is "damaging" in a way)

Since my hair is natural, it is so much easier to handle. Buuut I don't know why, but there are almost no good natural hair videos in english and in German. If you see a UA-cam video of a Spanish speaking UA-camr, she wash her hair and put a cream on it and is ready and do not have to take care for a hole week! And their hair look better! I changed my hair care routine and copied the one from frizzy desi... What could I say, suddenly my hair looks super, I need less products and it is quicker 😅. I am ready after about 30 minutes 😅.

You still have to be just as careful with relaxed hair....chemical relaxers are just that so now your breaking down your hairs integrity...still will need a lot of care to keep away from breakage also routine trims..but ofcourse wash day should be a breeze...and I definitely wouldn't recommend color..never seen a girl with nice hair after relaxing and coloring ..it's too much and eventually may cause damage...I've never been relaxed my entire 27yrs and don't plan to but I respect the ones that do ..natural hair is bigger chore and sometimes I be over my 3-5 hour wash day routine lmaoo 🤣😭 ... but the dedication is worth it for me especially wanting a texturizer back in the day and always straightened my hair ...at this point I already took the route of hair color so that is more than enough damage I wanna do lol to each is own at the end of the day.. honestly just gotta do what's best for you

I myself like to use one line so I don't have to think about it now. A lot of women think that they have to find one perfect shampoo, then this perfect conditioner etc. If there isn't any significant damage to the hair, I think it doesn't have to take hours to do natural hair or much of a hassel. That being said, when I was perming my hair, over the years my scalp got badly damaged. I went natural to fix that damage, but it didn't work for me. I will be going to a dermatologist, but I am also going back to simple hair care. Hopefully my issues are fixed, but I digress. If you like your hair perm, rock it girl!

4c hair IS a chore for some people. When I wasn’t relaxed I spent more money for products and getting my hair done. I couldn’t wash it as often because it was thick so it took almost a whole day to dry, and when I did wash it, it took almost an hour minus the detangling. And most folks wouldn’t want to loc their hair because there’s less room for variety when it comes to styling. In this video she’s not pressuring anyone to get relaxed hair and if you feel like ppl are attacking 4c hair than so be it 🤷‍♀️ Having natural 4c hair is just not suitable for everyone’s daily life and their expressing how and why.

Tshego Makoe Some people use texturizer treatment on their hair.
    I personally use instant straightener
I used a Chinese foam straightener which was really convenient cause it’s not a relaxer, perm or texturizer so I was able to use it on bleach hair cause it was plant based. I left it as is with of course conditioner, scalp oil and curl creme. You can also use a German ver called Glatt which you want to use a perm deodorizer and /or keep your windows open because it’s sulfur based but it keeps the hair laid without having to straighten it after. Brazilian Keratin blowout kits are a bit time consuming but the results last a whole month and help keep the natural hair stretched.

But I always did what I wanted to my natural hair. If I wanted to straighten it I did, if I wanted to put it in a messy bun I did, if I wanted to wear it out I did. I think what makes natural hair so difficult for many is they limit themselves to certain hair styles and stick to rigid hair regimens. Maybe we need to stop making natural hair so complicated and just enjoy it. 🤷🏿‍♀️

I also found relaxer to take longer than my natural hair. I am amazed at how people think this is the opposite. You've got to deal with the growth and make constant hair appointments if you're not doing it yourself. Also, one bad relaxer is all it takes for your hair to go straight into fried territory. I've never seen anyone outside of youtube with healthy relaxed hair long-term. Everyone feels great about it after a year or two but then, the problems come.

My super thick hair will always be here so why am I hiding behind wigs 365 for ten years in a row? No ma’am I stayed loyal and strong long enough. Im wearing wigs and clip ins for one more year and bye-bye to the natural hair life.

My hair is just a disaster, it has changed a lot due to hormonal issues ,stress and me having lack on vitamins ..so it really changed.. the texture the length..
It's now at the length of my ears.. can u imagine.. and not all of it.. it's not at the same length, beside the scalp issues like dandruffs..
Beside the depression that stopped my whole life..
Am thinking of relaxing it.. but ppl keep saying that am gonna lose what I already have..
Shall I try to fix it before relaxing.. or shall I relax it and maintain a strict routine ..
It's just so difficult to see how my hair become like this..this really heart my soul..especially that I used to have a beautiful soft and tall hair.. now ppl keep pointing out that, every time they see me. And this really heart me so much and add to my depression..idk why I wrote all of this.. maybe becuz I wanted to say anything to ppl who won't judge me all know me so I'll feel a little bit of relief ..

Awwww, take care of yourself babe....your hair is too fragile to be relaxed right now. Eat healthy, drink water and take your vitamins. Wash your hair (properly) biweekly, at most and leave it alone. Your hair should grow back healthy after a while.

I'm lazy, I don't have any time, or patience to be playing with my hair all day.. I don't want to protective style. I don't want to go to the salon. I don't want to relax my hair myself because my arms would hurt. I really am grateful that I can do a 10-15 min wash n go on my natural hair every few days and be done with it. I love my curls too.

I find natural Wash-and-Gos easy and practical. However, straight styles definitely are a job, but they look better on natural hair than relaxed hair.

I totally agree that natural hair is inconvenient and it feels like you have to be here entire schedule around it. For me I just felt like my natural hair was worth investing in, and I wasn’t getting any length of attention with the relaxed hair. I would have a new growth every two months when I would go in to get my hair relaxed but my hair just wasn’t getting any longer. It was always dry and reflect off on the bottom no matter how much I try to condition it, add protein treatments, and add oils. Everyone’s hair is totally different I spent years watching UA-cam videos of women with relaxed hair that looked healthy and full. I just think that everyone’s hair reacts differently to relaxers. I also agree that it’s nice to have shorter wash chairs and it’s nice to not have to test out a bunch of expensive products. However I don’t agree with you that you can experiment more with relaxed hair. When I used to get my hair braided with relaxed hair, my hair would end up extremely damaged. Now with my natural hair I see no damage with using protective styles because my hair is not as thin and it’s thicker and more durable and can handle being braided and staying in braids for up to two months. I feel like I have more options whether I want to keep it curly whether I want to do a silk press which ends up looking exactly like a relaxer at the end of the day. I also think that if there’s ever a time where I’m feeling lazy about my hair I can just throw on a headband wig that looks relaxed or looks curly or looks like an Afro also . I think that it’s important for all black women to experience having their natural hair at some point in their life so if you’ve been relax for a super long time ladies I really recommend that you transition. But just so that you know it won’t be easy and it will be very frustrating at times. I would say for me the most frustrating thing about having natural hair is that it feels like you’re not making progress. It’s been two years since I started my natural hair journey and transitioning out of the relaxer meant constant trimming of the relaxed dead ends. It just is frustrating when you’ve invested two years into getting your hair to be natural and then because of shrinkage your hair just seems very short.

I don't care if someone relaxes but people should also know there are gentler, non-permanent options like a texture release or smoothing treatment. Even a permanent Japanese straightener like Milbon is gentler than a relaxer.

Can you also please recommend hair relaxers for me to use ? I have very sensitive scalp like you and also low porosity hair. Xx
