My copy popped through my letterbox today - I am so excited to read it! Ali Smith is my favourite author. Her books are so unique and imaginative and thoughtful and so beautiful to read. Years back I was fortunate enough to meet her a few times when I was Reader In Residence for Essex and she appeared at the Essex Book Festival. She also came to our library in Basildon and gave such a wonderful talk about her writing. She is such a wonderful human being!. I enjoyed listening to the Waterstones podcast yesterday where she discusses this book and how she approaches her writing. I loved your review Erik (I know you're a fan) - it's made me even more eager to get stuck in!
Thank you for this. Yesterday I watched a livestream of Ali Smith’s visit to Portobello Bookshop to talk about her book. She is always so entertaining. My signed copy, which I purchased from this lovely bookshop, is on its way to me. Incidentally, Ali has a special link with this bookshop and dedicated the new book to them.
Huge Ali Smith fan here. Gliff is out in the US in February and I will read it right away. I know exactly what you mean about how wonderful it is when you suddenly get what she is doing (I had to read Autumn twice to get it but it was worth it) and her wordplay is stunning (the quote you shared about devices and vices was so great). This was a really thought provoking video. Many thanks!
I held off watching this as I had it on reserve. My library copy came through and I read it in a day yesterday. I love Ali Smith with a passion. I had a slight reservation about this one. I think I'll do a quick review to crystallise my feelings.
Yes, I've seen that painting in NYC. I don't know if it was traveling then or if it's traveling now. Frankly, one can't help feeling abashed at liking such a violent scene, but we're humans.

My admission...I've never finished an Ali Smith book 🫣 Perhaps this will be the one; it sounds fascinating.

Yes!
I love your book reviews a lot. I would love to see your review of 'There are Rivers in the Sky' by Elif Shafak if you've read it.
Thanks so much! 😊📚 I did make a video about Shafak's new novel which you can watch here: ua-cam.com/video/3HBW7oi4CEw/v-deo.html
