This is dead wrong. Sociologists have studied capitalism for centuries and have clearly shown that business is self interested. Shit, Adam Smith has the most respect and he said the baker doesn't sell you bread just because he likes you.
+Tormentality That doesn't seem to be his argument at all, though. He isn't saying that philanthropy is the best tactic for a business, but more or less saying that a network of users of a service/product begets more customers; Thus, the better/larger the network, the more perceived value it tends to have to a customer. He's just talking basic economic principals but slightly shifted to focus on digitally-focused companies
Tormentality Yeah, that was a weak analogy and threw me off for a bit to. But, judging by the rest of what he said, I think I got the gist of his message fairly accurately.
***** yea I'm pretty ADD and tuned out as soon as I thought he was spewing bullshit. Y'know, that is actually a problem I have. I'm so sick of disagreeing with people that as soon as I hear something that sets off my BS meter (ie: non researched, non scientific) I tune out. It's like an anger control mechanism I have or some shit. Yet, for all the anger it saves me, I get the wrong impression from many people/things/ideas. I'll consider adjusting my mind accordingly.
I'm not against with Amazon, Netflix, and other companies. It make sense, imagine if everyone decided to stop using those services they would loose service, but that's not going to happen. Anyways, sad part is that since people like convinces and cheaper prices local businesses fail, because they don't change.
You see this with highly addictive MMOs and now mobile games: "The game isn't that good but I don't want to let down my friends." Modern publishers prey on people using the network effect to hook them in. Overall they get more lazy with game design because it's no longer necessary to make a good game; droves of people will force themselves to play it anyway.
+Brandon Balli Free is not a low enough price for Windows. I think an accurate price for using Windows would be if they paid you like $1000/year. But that's just figuring having to deal with such an awful ineffective system, if you value security at all you'd have to add that in too, and I can't imagine how much they could fairly pay for absolute access to all your data at any time, most people wouldn't actually sell that at any price if they had a choice.
Big Think is like the old grandpa that everyone ignores but is mad knowledgable

***** ok I see. I interpreted the coal miner analogy to mean that people were more important than the product and was like wtf.

No doubt this was at least part of the thought process behind making windows 10 free. Great video.
