I am really impressed by Immich. One thing to note is that google photos is actually also using the cloths of people to identify pictures of them on the same day, so it can even tag people that are photographed from behind or only partly visible, which makes it insanely good at identifying them
Can you do a video please how you prefer in unraid to do a 2nd server backup. Feels like there are 100 ways to do it. I'm stuck what way is secure, free and good.
Can't wait for part 2. I tried and failed on my onesies but this looks amazing. Thanks for highlighting this, i'd love to move away from google photos.

It's Cloudflare. It has to do with their restrictions and limits on videos and DRM. I have the same issue with PhotoPrism but get by the CF limitation by using LAN IP Webdav rather than Webdav over my public domain. The info can be found on CF's FAQs, if I recall.
I am using a Cloudflare tunnel and there are videos that I know for sure are over a 100mb and it’s working fine. Do the tunnels have that size limitation?

Nice!! I've been waiting for a solution like this for a long time. Had some dependencies but wasn't too bad to get installed thanks to your PG Container! Thanks!
It is so good to see you back and can't wait until part 2. Any chance you discuss ways to delete photos (assets) in Immich that have deleted from the external drive? I got Immich up and running (only because of watching all your excellent videos!), and it has already been great to identify which photos have incorrect dates and to clearly show duplicates. I've deleted some photos, but they still show in Immich with an alert that it can't find the asset. But I try to delete the photos in Immich with now luck. Searches have shown other folks use scripts to clean up the Immich files, but hopefully there is something easier. Thank you again!
Very useful video - thanks! I'm in the process of setting up Immich and transferring all of my Google videos/photos to it (I've 2TB of them so currently going through the laborious process of running Google Takeout to download them...). Regarding facial recognition in Google, I set this up a while ago and it works fine in the UK. I can't recall the exact steps, but I think it was just as simple as connecting to a US server via a VPN and then enabling the option in Google Photos settings.
Perfect timing. I'm just getting my first unraid server set up and figured out, and I was hoping to have some kind of local photo equivalent to Google photos. I will say that the sharing of photos with other people is just as easy on Google photos. And also with Google photos. You are in fact able to change the photo album cover picture.
i really like that you went through its features and compared it to google photo before going through the setting up guide. I'm new to self-hosting and you saved me a bunch of time looking up immich and if it's worth it for me so thank you! in this video you also suggested using a friends unraid to do encrypted backups for important data. i do find that very appealing especially that i have 2 friends with servers that would like it. do you recommend a certain container or app to do that?
Please in the future video can you explain how to setup 2 factor authentication , i set up with cloudflare tunnel but is not working with imich on mobile, only if i use from descktop
Could you tell me; are the files uploaded to folders, raw, as they were from the phone, and then linked to the photo album? Meaning, are the originals preserved, and maybe thumbnails generated for the app?
And plans to go through Dynamix File Integrity plugin? It would go well with this as photos of our love ones are usually the files we don’t want to corrupt. I know you have ZFS set up but many of us still don’t so having that plugin covered would be cool.
I'm guessing that using something like this, I would need to refrain from adding/removing and maybe editing the photos by other means (like using file explorer)? This is kind of what keeps me from using my Nexcloud instance. Ideally it would be nice to only have the one source of the files, but use/edit them by any other means and the database stay updated. Like for example, I upload some photos in Immich and then later on want to use that same photo in Lightroom. Is this going to be a problem?
I've seen a ton of the web UI but how is the mobile? And can I set Immich as my phones 'Cloud Media App' so that when I go to upload photos, it'll pull up those in Immich?
Great video, we need a countdown to pt2, so I know when I should be clearing my calendar. I am interested to know if I deleted a file on my android phone in google photos app, if it would be deleted in immich.
I really like how Immich is looking so far, but the inability to add ones own tags to an image, be it of a face or even just a general tag "Christmas" is extremely disappointing.
How does this compare to Nextcloud Photos? I'm looking to self host but also want Dropbox style file syncing. Nextcloud sounds like a good all in one solution but maybe Immich is a better fit for purpose.
Both are good solutions. i would maybe try them both, see which you prefer. But if you are wanting file syncing etc then with Nextcloud its all in one place which is nice for sure.
I was using OneDrive and Google Photo to backup photos from my phone. My pictures stretch all the way back to 2010. I've just set up Immich on my home server, I've set the data directory to within a folder in OneDrive so that's a remote back up. I also run a manual job to backup the same files to another local machine that I have. The Immich app is great!
Can you please adress the Problem of uploading big files? Without reverse proxy, I don't see any problem. But as soon as I activate NPM with CloudflareDNS, there is an Upload limit. Adding the "client_max_body_size" to the Config doesn't change anything. So it might be the 100 MB Upload Limit from Cloudflare. Maybe you can bring a solution to this? Might be chunked uploads?
Fantastic video! Already got a domain and cloudflare account so looking forward to the set up video :-) You may already have it in your set up video, but it would be good to know if there’s a way to move my existing Google Photos into Immich as part of that tutorial 😊
Can I setup multiple user accounts? If I delete an image on my phone can it delete from server? How does this compare with photo prism or photo structure in Unraid?
Can't wait to see part 2.I tried using Immich but I could get the iOS app to see all the images on my iPhone only selected images. I ended up uninstalling it.
Can Immich have multiple users with their own photo libraries? Also, after the install tutorial, could you please make a part 3 that deals with migrating to Immich from Google Photos specifically?
@@SpaceinvaderOneAwesome! I jumped through those hoops when I migrated to Synology Moments. Immich sounds a lot more feature rich, and should be a lot faster on my 40-thread dual Xeon UnRaid server than Moments is on my gimpy 2-core Atom in the DS412+.
This is really limited. You cannot drag and drop folders, at least not that I have found. You can arrange by folders by using albums, but it all has to be done manually. I suppose I am a bit bias since I feel the same way with Google Photos. I would much rather have a image host that you can organize by folder and sub folder. If you want it to be auto organized and no control. This is for you for sure. Thanks for the video Ed!
You are just naming a file server. Like Dropbox and Nextcloud. Although, Immich is thinking about adding the feature you mentioned. They have something called external libraries. Which allow immich to 'just read' the files. Auto creating albums is not there yet, but a lot of people have created scripts for it. Kinda weird if you ask me. The whole point of immich/gphotos is that it automatically uploads your phone photos, and puts them in a timeline. Then I create albums of, for example, a vacation. I am interested in your folder/sub folder organization. I like browsing photos via the timeline because that's how I remember the photos. 'Look at these photos from the vacation in August. Oh yeah it was also the beginning of september.' And you can just scroll to the next month. Or you have created an album. You are saying its all manual. What automatic system do you have in place currently?
@@KodessR I just been using Nextcloud for that for the lack of better alternative. Immich seems to be pretty good but I don't have the memory for dates honestly, so it's a me thing not so much Immich. I just organize by folders Pictures/People/Harris or Pictures/Events/Easter/2003 then I don't need to remember anything, I would like something just for images so me and my entire family can use and combine in the same folder type structure. I know my family does the same. Something like Photobucket had in the early days. None of the image host dockers I have found so far have really been anything I been happy with either it won't let you organize by folders, or the system is extremely lacking in all features. Of course I could just be being picky lol.
I agree. I wish immich would give us the option to organize our albums in such a way. I always wished we could do that on Google photos since the beginning too
Does immich do anything useful re de-duplication? I've got multiple duplicate library folders dating back 20 odd years from various family members. So there's not just actual duplicates within each library but overlapping libraries - so there's probably up to 7 or 8 identical photos once all the libraries are combined. I'd really like to just be able to chuck everything at an application that will flag up the duplicates and let me choose what to keep. Thanks
Thank You. Great. Looking forward to part 2. I have tried others and not impressed. I think this will fit the bill as long as it will use existing folder setups.
Part 2 can’t come quick enough. I have Immich up and running on my unraid server but the facial recognition, machine learning and search ain’t working. Throwing back errors in the log files. I’ll follow your setup and see if I missed something but I don’t think I have.
I hope you see my comment, because I need help. Everything was working fine when with the version of postgres14 "tensorchord/pgvector-rs:pg14-v0.1.11" . I had no issues with that version and out of sudden Immich wouldn start. Turns out that I had to change the repository to "tensorchord/pgvector-rs:pg14-v0.2.0". Now is working properly, but only issue is that Immich duplicates each of my photos and is really fustrating. Any ideas of why Immich is like this?
though mine isn't in the middle of uploads... 0.5% CPU and about 800mb of ram usage currently. it does spike slightly during uploads, but after the initial on boarding uploads, it's pretty minimal considering. least from my experience, in comparison to so many other ones
One thing that has always made me skeptical is how does it manage the photos themselves, ie does it move and sort photos in a file folder hierarchy. I would love to be able to simply add photos uploaded into a folder, that are in titled sub folders and move them into a sorted folder category.
I've tried that a few weeks ago and it went all fine and good...until the first update came around. Each time I update the container, it won't start back up. Have the same issue on truenas scale. Reinstallation doesn't fix it, I have to delete every config including database and reinstall from scratch every time. Makes me very frustrated about it and disappointed. Same issues I've had with nextcloud actually. Never survived a single upgrade!
Really does sound super frustrating. What are you running on? Has anyone else had similar issues? That you’re also having trouble on Nextcloud makes me suspect there may be a different underlying issue with your setup
@@dkerlee Well I haven't tried nextcloud in a few years. I did try it at least 5 times over a few years tho. I was using unraid and following SIO guides and some other people's guide too.
Dont tell anyone but i use a syncing software to sync all my photos on my new phone to my pixel 4a and then that still gets unlimited uploads at high quality. I still want my own solution long term so curious about Immich.
I've used both and I felt photoprism did a better job with its local ai to detect wha twas in the photos. Immich didn't do so well but the UI is better IMO.
I tried photoprism and quit after a couple weeks. I’ve been doing both Google photos and Immich, and easing my way over to Immich full time. I think it’s better, and it’s been months. They’re both $0, try both!
Anyone else experiencing an issue with Postgres and Unraid? I am constantly having to chmod the DB stuff because Immich stops being allowed to read the Postgres DB files

Could I pay you to help me with my ZFS cache pool in unraid? Basically I want to change my 1tb pool to 2tb and I can not figure it out at all. Even after watching your videos on all that.
I really like that there's a free alternative to Google Photos, and I love that the UI/UX is so similar that's it would be extremely intuitive to swap over. I just wish I had a server to be able to set it up so I can stop paying for Google One. Just not a fan of the Immich logo or typemark, but that's a minor gripe
2 other times on my other accounts. The thing is, I don't engage in political/religious/or any of the UA-cam taboo commenting or spam. Some person who doesn't like me has decided to attack my accounts with reports to UA-cam. Which, if youtube could back up their actions I would love to see it. So it's my word and proof against some idiot out there. But, I have already hijacked enough of SI's comment sections with this nonsense. This has to do with YT and not him. I am glad to see him promoting ways to move away from Google and their fake "caring" for the community. Bring on part 2!
Really? I've been running immich, photoprism, and nextcloud for a couple years and never had to reinstall after countless updates.
What about immich vs photoprism vs libre photos? Is immich better?
It would be nice if you could hide photos in an Album from the main "Photos" tab
great content, great level of explanation!
Anyone know if you can sort albums by file name in Immich?
I'd really like to know that too!
Dont tell anyone but i use a syncing software to sync all my photos on my new phone to my pixel 4a and then that still gets unlimited uploads at high quality. I still want my own solution long term so curious about Immich.
Immich vs PhotoPrism self hosted?
I've used both and I felt photoprism did a better job with its local ai to detect wha twas in the photos. Immich didn't do so well but the UI is better IMO.
I tried photoprism and quit after a couple weeks. I’ve been doing both Google photos and Immich, and easing my way over to Immich full time. I think it’s better, and it’s been months.
They’re both $0, try both!
Anyone else experiencing an issue with Postgres and Unraid? I am constantly having to chmod the DB stuff because Immich stops being allowed to read the Postgres DB files
Six Walking Dead actors. Big fan!
Some problem during install (postgres) but the software is very good. Thanks for this video
One thing you didn't touch on is the editing features of Google Photos, does Immich have or plan to add anything similar?
He says near the end of this video he would upload the video on the Friday or Saturday from release of Pt1. That was over 3 weeks ago. Lets hope he is ok.
Can you embed images using Immich? If not, I hope they add that functionality. I eagerly await your install vid.
You said that you tired posting three times? I can only see this one and the other where you talk to spaceinvader. So currently 2 out of 3.
I have followed and used his Nextcloud install to get away from Google Drive years ago and appreciate all that he does.@@schnittmagier5515
