For those saying "Why the hell are people singing along ruining it" type comments. I was there. This was an EXTREMELY rare chance to see Martin perform solo. I was singing just as loud as the rest. It was an amazing night. This was a small show, which is why the audience comes through so loud. 1500 people is a small venue, so it's kind of hard ignoring the audience singing... :D
This was the original arrangement he wanted for the song, too. But engineer/producer for the Violator album, Flood (well known producer; it's a pseudonym) convinced him to give the song like a kind of disco or up-tempo beat, and Martin eventually relented when everyone else loved that version (but he didn't, and probably still isn't a big fan of the album version to this day; who knows). I prefer the album version -- plus I think the video Anton Corbijn did for the song is probably the best music video of all time. I love the over-saturation of colors and the added red, green or blue hue, depending on the shot; makes it look like a story book or something. Very, very well done video.
Just beautiful....& the audience singing along, adds to the passion in which Martin delivers this song. Thanks be to the universe for gifting us with Depeche Mode. I am grateful to have lived their entire music history & can never get enough....
And then...he autographed my jacket with a silver sharpie and I have never seen pictures of Martin so damn intrigued/excited, and loved his commentary on how dodgy my leather jacket's texture is...I am in the process of making a video of my many MLG 2012 meet and greet experience. Martin should win SO MANY more awards...at the very least, give them a hollywood star...
I just heard Martin's home demo version of Enjoy The Silence today. It was very moving, very tender, and very stripped down.. Just young Martin on the harmonium with his haunting, beautiful voice.
both versions are perfect. each interpretation has powerful moments and I can't decide which one is better. this original version is very similar to tori amos's cover.
Heard this first in the 80’s when I was at secondary school, use to just sing along in the playground , bought the single from Woolworths . Now when I hear it words are so exact & meaningful 😘
As I understand the genesis of the official DM version of Enjoy the Silence, Martin had written it as a simple ballad and initially resisted Alan Wilder and Daniel Miller suggesting putting a beat to it. Watch Flood's videos about this. In the midst of the engineering, Martin comes up with the melody very quickly, again pushed to play it on the guitar (instead of the synth) and it pulls it all together brilliantly. Having said this, I always wanted to hear what Martin originally wanted and this has to be it. Just imagine, this is a video of the ONLY TIME he played it! Martin L. Gore is a world class extraordinary musician, visionary composer and also a giving and collaborative band member. A class act!
Martin, my username says it all. You move me each time I hear your music. I can't express how much you have meant to me, throughout my teens, and now as a young adult I feel the same way.

I have always been wondering if Enjoy The Silence would have become such a hit had Martin his way and kept it a ballad. I do not think so. The genius of Alan Wilder decided to make it an uptempo song. And the rest is history.
When you watch Alan or Flood being interviewed about ETS, they say that they heard its potential to rhythmically sounds like PTS songs. It’s interesting how they explain the layering of the sounds till the Martin’s famous riff comes to perfect the song. Without Martin’s decision to change from synth to guitar, I doubt that ETS would have become such a iconic song. I found that simplifying the working process is a pity.
Macro, thats my favorite song on Playing the Angel. Its lyrics and music are so powerful, with that deep meaning that is ever so present in Martin's songs. "Whispering cosmos right there before me unlimited, endless God breathing through me."
omg i was there!!! for the first night!! was so magical.i was so broke but sum1 sold me a cheap tik n i got in :D i lived at job corps which was just a building away and got to hear him singing the 2nd night from my room on the 12th floor of the building
@riveratrackrunner The Enjoy the Silence single has a shortened version of the song with Martin singing it. It's track 8 and it's subtitled [Harmonium]. It's quite good. I'm glad Dave did the version that they put on the album, but it's awesome to hear Martin sing it too.
I love his speech, with his patented scared look, concludes with: um well anyway thanks to Daniel Miller who im known for 20 something years like that...HAHA. MARTIN IS SO DOWN TO EARTH. He was actually pleased to meet me and my boyfriend in Santa Barbara last december. He chuckled because I froze up after he held out his hand to shake...I had just told him I think his work is GENIUS, and he was instantly always my fav band member since I first saw/heard them. I WISH he would do more SOLO
@TheModCon I agree, Martin pours his soul when he sings. Dave is more of a frontman, he's got the charisma and well, a voice that completes the package! My favourite DM songs are all sung by Martin though.
@dmodert66 I was there too....both nights.....it was so intimate.....like a personal dm concert....we could not help but to sing along, it I think it sounds beautiful.
@MsFuturestar1 Wow, it feels like yesterday since I first heard this song... truly amazing how it's stood the test of time. How does he do it? Great to see so many people on here loving DM.
He did a great job. They should have changed ETS up for this MM tour. Have Martin start off acoustic and then drop the beat on the second verse and have Dave finish. Or have Dave repeat the first verse. Similar to what they did with PJ last tour (start off slow then kick into high gear).
@dmodert66 I think the point is that if people weren't singing, they could've been *listening* to that rare opportunity themselves. :) As well as making it easier for others to hear. I guess it's different camps of people. When I go to see live music, I usually am there to hear the artists, but I know some people are there for the "crowd participation" and excitement too. It's why I can't listen to any live Queen music. :) Either way, glad you had the opportunity to be there!

There's nothing more spine-tingling than being in an audience whilst you are all singing a much loved song back.
Thank you Martin for giving this great song to the world.
