I was looking for Fred Matt. He would be about 90. He was about 5-8 and a bit and about 185. 3 golds, 2 silver and I think 4 bronaz in the Nationals and Pan Am tournments... in the early early 60's. Quite a guy. and he had no trouble putting 4 biker types on their backsone night in Dawson Creek, when they thought they would 'bust up' the bar at the Windsor Hotel. It was good knowing you, Fred
The place where there filming this is where I do karate we were actually doing a class behind them doors when this was getting filmed he just recently got his 10th dan as well
I did wonder who awarded his 9th Dan. He is not listed for that grade, or any other Dan grade, on the register of the British Judo Association, which is the largest Judo organisation in the UK, and the only one recognised for international purposes. There are some other Judo organisations, such as the British Judo Council and the Amateur Judo Association, which may or may not have serious grading standards. As far as I can make out, Jack Hearn is associated with the All England Judo Federation, which has only about a dozen member clubs. For all I know he may be (or have been) an excellent judoka, but as in other martial arts, a high Dan grade doesn't signify anything unless you know the basis for grading. In the case of the AEJF, the Dan Grade syllabus on their website doesn't mention any requirement for a track record in competition. This contrasts with the BJA, where gradings up to 5th Dan depend on success in competition at that level. Above 5th Dan the gradings depend mainly on special contributions to education, administration, etc.
Some associations ask for katas instead of competition success. I used to train judo with the 'International ' Bushido Association and we had 9 kyu grades: you need to know katas: katame-no (6 to 5 kyu), nage-no (5 to 4 kyu), kime-no (4-3 kyu), go-no sen (3-2 kyu), ju-no sen (2-1 kyu), and goshin-ho for black belt. IBA black belts know far more katas than BJA
nice one! That's what its all about. Lust for life! Especially in the troubled world of today, where kids struggle to find they way. Judo, healthy lifestyle, harmonious community leads to a life worth living.
@@oliverreno4734 I know someone in his 30s (now he's 50) who hasn't been thrown for donkey's years. But another guy in his 50s (now 60s) still gets thrown
@@ronki23 It doesn't surprise me, I know someone similar like that as well. Perhaps it's an ego thing at such younger age. I'm 31 and a 2nd Dan in Judo and a Purple belt in BJJ. I have no issue being thrown for demonstration, but there are older people in my clubs who are in their 50s who are higher rankings that don't feel like being thrown a hundred times a session, which I get too...
@@oliverreno4734 my biggest issue(s) is that when I do a grading as an uke, one of the instructors makes me hold tori's gi when getting thrown which makes it harder for me to breakfall. That and they give me a low score on my breakfalls when they grade me and whenever I get winded they say 'breakfall better' but they don't teach me how to do it properly. That's why I have a problem with clubs where the Senseis are too old to get thrown but not too old to criticise. I'm 6 kyu out of 9
It's not all about IJF: at my old club the head of our Association (IBA) is a 8th Dan and he isn't IJF but his teachers were. Lots of people start their own association and people from the BJA and BJC also hold black belts in IBA so it's pretty good standards
Probably buy a pink belt you Ignoramus.Jack has just attained Judan at 97 years which has been given to him by the Kodokan. You would`nt last five minutes with the training that we did with Jack.To attain 1st Dan I had to fight people one after the other with no rest, going up in grades to the grade you were aiming for,And you had to at least draw with the 1st Dan.Then you also had Kata and a written exam. You do not know the man so don`t try and put him into the mindset that you are clearly in.www.dailymail.co.uk/video/news/video-2258648/Video-97-year-old-Jack-Hearn-Britains-oldest-Judo-sensei.html
I'd take him on. He's 92. Would you take on Pele or Beckenbauer at 92? of course you would. Why do people think that the older a martial artist gets, the better he/she gets.? It's silly.
God, after seeing this man and the 106 year old woman who visited the White House and danced with the president and works 40 hours a week, I feel like shit! Lol
He wouldn't be able to stop my double leg... I'll send his ass through the wall 😂. Just fucking around, respect to a true martial artist. Surprised he's not all busted up. Those tosses are notorious for fucking peoples knees and backs up.
Love this guys judo but the samurai crappy sword bit at the starts bullshite .....a medieval knight would always defeat one due to the quality of the armour !!
I was a student of his for a few years when I did Judo. One of the most awe-inspiring and amazing men you will ever have the privilege of meeting.
I am proud to say I know him and at the moment he is 10th Dan which is very rare
