    That looks delicious!!! I find pigeons much more of a problem with my broccoli than caterpillars. I swear they were watching me planting my brassicas out last week just waiting to pounce!!!

    I am thrilled that you mentioned that the leaves are edible! I have a hard time convincing my customers that broccoli leaves are good to eat. Our family eats the leaves often but people think we are weird for eating the "non edible" parts. A little butter in a skillet on low, chop the leaves fine and cook for 20 minutes on low heat until tender, add minced garlic and some minced onion, salt and pepper, and a pinch of curry. Yummmmmm! so good. Thanks for letting people know the leaves are delicious!

      You are so welcome William. It seems that the presentation of broccoli in supermarkets has programmed people to think of it as just a giant 'flowerbud' in isolation from all the rest of the plant! Your recipe sounds delicious.

      I just had this same conversation with my family.
      I was telling them how weird I felt eating a part of the plant that wasn't considered "edible" and especially explaining to my children that its crazy we have been brought up to think like that .
      I find it so strange (im american and live in a some what remote oart of new york with lots of farm land) that i have been taught, whether it be meat or veg, that these parts are some how less than the others.
      My leaves are huge and because I never thought of them as edible I would use them as ground cover or throw them into my compost. Practicing that what I take from the soil I must give back. But I think they would make great wraps to cook with like banana leaves. Or as you said just copped up like I do my collards 🤤

    Last year I sowed these too early and got tiny purple heads in June which very quickly ran to seed. Now I see why, you aren't even supposed to sow them till June! Love your videos Charles!

    Saved seed. NE UK. Purple sprouting Broccolini. SUCH a great 'doer'. No cover, no insect repellent...absolutely brilliant crops. I use the small leaves too! However, I do plant randomly in amongst all manner of other veg, herbs, edible weeds and wild flowers. It's one of my favourite things to grow...never disappoints...even when decimated by caterpillars and or frost. Bloody marvellous. Enjoy. Thank you Charles 😁👍🏽.

    The first time we grew this,we didn't use mesh. It was attacked by cabbage whites and was literally eaten to the stem. We left it, and in autumn it grew new leaves and we had a fantastic crop the following year! As long as you don't pull it up, sprouting broccoli is one of the easiest and productive plants in the veg patch.

    I planted Purple Brocelli last May in large pots. Attracted some nice butterflies then came the caterpillars. Totally devasted the plants so I put it down to a complete failure. Left the plants over winter and now in mid February the following year the plants have recovered and the Brocelli is sprouting. Happy days😊

      This is so nice to see! Possibly the pests helped you because they reduced overall growth, which might have been too big for your pots. These plants can grow enormous, especially from starting in May!

    My purple sprouting broccoli has been fabulous this year. It's been cropping since late February and only finished last week. It freezes as well, so there's an even longer season. Brilliant crop.

    Perfectly timed - I'm just getting ready to sow my first ever. I'm going to try to 'hide' them in mixed beds with flowers etc. so they don't get nibbled too much.

    YES! Someone else who has noticed that the stems are also delicious, and maybe even better than the florets! They don't hold butter or cheese as well, but such a waste to not eat them!

    My chickens and rabbits have been helping me go no dig mostly
    Raising animals we need to dig sometimes then we burry wood like branches unaged compost
    Rabbit bedding and compost on top
    But we love not Diggin unless we have to now :)

    I didn't know when to harvest mine so they ended up flowering.
    I've left them in though as they're the only things with flowers in my garden until the chives hit their stride and they solve the problem of what my stingless bees can eat.
    I might even do the same next year.

    Thanks for telling us the months. I just add on six months for us in New Zealand and it all works out. But I also write in my gardening book for records. Eating green sprouting broccoli at the moment over here great.

    Thanks for the upload Charles, I'm amazed you find time to do it with all the other stuff you have going on!
    I always consider purple brocolli to be only second in importance next to spuds. It comes in just when you have been eating kale and cabbage till they come out of your lugs! It is so satisfying to see it develop when everything else is either past it or not ready yet.
    We are located on a hill with a flat open aspect for around fifty miles to the south. Unfortunately that's the direction of the prevailing wind! This can prove a bit trying at times but with low hedges compartmentalizing the patches it makes growing the taller crops possible. I tend to correct any plants that blow over and then mound the compost/soil up around the base of the plants. Brassicas will put out more roots from the submerged section and this helps anchor them.

    By the way last year I left few cabbages in the garden (not intentionally, just was too disorganised to get the job done) and in early spring they produced lots of juicy sprouts that tasted sweet and much like kohlrabi. We loved them raw in salads and also stir-fried.
    Where I come from the winters are too cold to do this and all beds are usually cleared before winter and yes, they are dug...! but here in Ireland I didn't do that and was pleasantly surprised to see that lots of plants actually live through and provide much needed greens very early in the season.
    I still have my last year's kale in - is not much use to us now, but I love the golden yellow flowers that are heaving with bees...

    Love it thanks Charles!!!! We had a nasty windstorm again in western Washington this week and it ended up finishing off some of the spring broccoli because the stems snapped nearly clean off at the base. Looking forward to another growing season to try again!! God bless!

    Great video Charles. Learnt something from your falling-down-let-it-grow-back-up hint. I've also learnt to plant them in places where I'm committed to their very long growing period. The first time I grew them I ripped them out in spring through impatience, because I had tomatoes to replace them with in a main garden bed. We live and learn ☺️

    Hey Charles! The color purple of your broccoli is amazing and I learned so much with your time lapse views of the plant's growth. I particularly like the color matched Growing Timeline graphic at the end. I was part of the cohort that removed it too early last year. My focus today now that the sun is out is to transplant Marigolds and Basil near my six varieties of tomatoes (24 plants in all) and having a go at sowing my Brussels Sprouts. Cheers!

    Hello Hello, well...look at you, all tanned and happy in the garden! I too have a tan as we head into a second night of frost potential. A low of 3C for the second night in a row. Welcome to Canada eh!! XD Even though it is quite rare in my area by this point in the season, I am a smart gardener and have not put my tomatoes\peppers\eggplant etc out yet. I can still remember the year it snowed the first week of June many years ago. The purple broccoli is stunning. What a treat! So looking forward to another season with you Charles. Cheers!

    My very green-fingered mother permanently grew delicious Purple S in our smallish council house back garden along with about 20 other varieties of veg & fruit. As she prepared meals for us five kids she'd ask us to nip out and pick a bit of this or that - the definition of super-fresh food ! Purple S with the leaves made for a great rich healthy gravy and soup stock. None of us kids or Mum knew until much later that Purple Sprouting was related to the "posh", too-pristine broccoli that posh foodies love to wax lyrical about and which they usually buy far-from-fresh from supermarkets.
    No contest - given a choice between Purple sprouting and broccoli I'll choose PS every time. Oh - and I've never seen it in any supermarket or even farmers' market or on any restaurant menu. Why ? Probably 'cos it doesn't look pristine and posh enough for pristine posh people !

    This is so timely, but even more thank you for talking about harvest! I have learned a new way of gardening from you, but I am having trouble with harvesting so that it looks like what I would buy from the store/shop...I was always taught to use what is going bad/over first...but I want to eat the quality ones and compost the over ripe. I also often need to keep them in the fridge a couple days and don't know if that makes a difference either.

      You are welcome, yes timing is important for picking. With vegetables grown in healthy soil, they should keep fine for a few days in the fridge.

    In the South West of Victoria (Australia) we are just coming into Winter and had our first frost last night. I'd nearly given up on my purple sprouting broccoli as the plants have grown huge - over a metre wide and high, but not flowered. Thanks for this video - I know that I just need to be more patient. ☺

    Thank you very much for this video. I’m in south East Texas, USA. I planted purple spring broccoli in November, it’s April and I have nothing. I was about to pull it up. Thank you for the video, I’m going to leave it alone and wait for my harvest! Yes you’re right, I didn’t read the seed package. 😂😂

    Very good info. I will definitely try an F1 hybrid variety as I have been growing an open pollinated variety and not getting a large head. Just a ton of smaller florets. I just thought that was normal! Thanks for the info!

    I'd love to try these once my green houses are up(I've finally got all the parts in yesterday! )
    It gets really cold here in the winter but if I put in the greenhouse and double wall a smaller hoop and cloth over the top it would allow it to over winter in my zone (5b michigan us).
    I have made cuttings of my fig which is rated zone 6 to trial in the greenhouse too.

    Very enjoyable video - thanks Charles. We sowed these last summer in our small garden - whist modest sized we are cropping the heads and eating the leaves this spring - we'll make these a regular crop, together with spinach, rainbow chard, french beans, toms and leaks.

    I gotta start brassicas earlier this year, everything bolted by mid March, broccoli only as big around as a pint glass, radishes I sowed 10 days ago went straight to bolt at only 2 inches tall

      Sprouting broccoli has a much milder taste than calabrese, you should definitely try it.

      Hi Karen. :) I think San Diego Seed Conpany sells it - or at least they’re growing it for seeds next season. I’m pretty sure they had a video on it recently but it was a much shorter variety.

      Yep, they carry it but they’re out of stock. You can go on their notification list and they’ll tell you when the seed is available again. :)

      Yeah we have a related problem when letting the plants cross, where PSB stands for "pretty sure it's brassica"~

    Thanks for the video... I so wish I knew all that last year then I wouldn’t have nursed PSB plug plants all winter in my greenhouse! I have a couple outside too, but no sign of heads to eat. You’re right about the smaller leaves, they have been eaten recently. Well I think I’ll try again this year but from seed this time.👩‍🌾

    Dear Charles and family.
    I am writing to you to tell you how much influence you and your way of making beds, and growing vegetables, have on so many people around the world .. I myself live in Denmark, and have this year made a lot of "No Dig "beds .. simply because I did't benefited much from the traditional ways of cultivating, used too much energy and in the end you no longer enjoy the garden in the same way, which is a disaster. when I found your channel, I was honestly ready for something new, or to "give up" for the first time, I really feel like the garden and I are working together, and not fighting against each other. and for the first time ever, my potatoes, pumpkins, tomatoes, lettuce (lettuce has really been something I could not do quite well) carrots, broad beans, peas, climbing beans etc etc insanely beautiful and healthy .. it is so wild .. and I can see on many other youtubers' channels that they have it in the same way that the fight against the garden has stopped, and has become a collaboration .. your books are a super supplement to both sowing, and reseeding, and to understand "No Dig" .. so from the bottom of my heart thank you Charles, Edward and family, for making us collaborate with the garden ❤️🇩🇰

    It’s my favourite brassica.. one day I was cooking a ham in the slow cooker..I used the juice left and boiled the purple broccoli..amazing flavour..
    I tell everyone that hate brassica to try it ...

    Hey Charles,
    I love your content and putting it into action in my home garden in Melbourne, Australia.
    It would be really handy if rather than using months you could use the seasons as timelines.
    so for instance:
    Sow May-June might become
    Sow last month of spring - first month of summer
    This might not be as easy as I’ve made it out, but would be super helpful for translating your advice to my Southern Hemisphere gardening!

      This is a fair point but then I then get complaints from my majority audience that I am not being month specific.     Absolutely brilliant as per usual Charles. Would eat the hole plant including the stem would steam it then you cut away the stringy out side bits the soft center tastes like a nice mild mushroom you should try it your self Charles

    I only grow a couple of plants, this year the spears were very small so will try an F1 ( don't usually buy F1 ) variety this year, perhaps will sow a couple of my usual plants aswell as the F1 and see if theres a difference next year.

    Thank you! Last year they froze during a heavy frost (-10) in the spring, I think I'll try a couple in the poly tunnel as well as outside this year after the tomatoes and the rest are done. If the broccolis can stand to live in pots until then.

    So thankful for Charles' videos. This is my first no-dig year and already harvesting loads. Indeed, weeding is much less work and everything looks so strong. One funny thing: my dannish ballhead cabbage that I've planted in the Fall, decided to go into seeds right away. Not sure if this is normal.

      Wonderful to read.
      That is normal for a full planted cabbage to flower in the spring, so you need to eat them when even not fully headed up.

    I got inspired by this video last year and tried Early PSB and Claret. I would say EPSB wasn't spectacular, but it was early indeed, started cropping in February. Claret on the other hand was a bit later, but has also finished before the end of April (it was a pretty warm winter in South of England). I think it was the best broccoli I ever had, so sweet and delicious! plus, it looks so nice in the frosty sunny winter mornings (:
    This year I'm planting Claret again and will try Rudolph for the early crop

    I grew some purple sprouting broccoli last year for the first time to harvest this Spring. I had two plants, but I only really got one and a half harvests out of them, the side shoots didn't do much and I wasn't sure at what stage to cut the main head, and as you showed in your video you have tiny side shoots coming out so I found it very difficult to judge where to cut the stems. I am now growing some summer purple and tenderstem which will be ready soon, and I just bought some Claret seeds to sow now. Many thanks, Charles.

    My one purple sprouting broccoli made it through a pretty cold southern Ontario winter. I covered it with a tall bucket lol. It’s miniature with 4 tiny sprigs produced so far which I ate Lol. It’s the one vegetable I just wish would grow here. Looking at yours I just have to laugh at my efforts 😂

    Hi Charles, I enjoy your videos - they are very nicely done. De Ciccio is the sprouting brocc I have grown, usually plant in late summer for overwintering. It doesn't hard frost here until late November, usually, so late planting is fine. Usually have heads by April. It's OP, so saving seed has worked. Doesn't look as nice as that hybrid, though.
