Just from the 1st use the grinds for chemex by eye looked totally different in comparison to my Sette 270 setting 25. Comandante setting 30 poured faster for my 30g /500 g/ 4 min, so I had to deal it at 24/25, although it purely depend on beans. I was afraid it wont make much difference but it did.
It’s pretty amazing how much a small adjustment can make! And what’s crazy as well is that different beans will typically need different grind settings as well. There’s a lot of variables to factor in, which makes having a solid grinder all the more important. Thanks for the comment!
@@TheUnrevealer It’s true! Not even every region is the same even though often times coffee grown in certain continents can often be more dense. It’s a case by case scenario. Dude, I keep seeing idiots on UA-cam criticizing the Comandante for having "plastic" parts. First of all, it's not "plastic" it's a polymer. Secondly the Glock 17 and Glock 19 handguns carried by most police forces all over the world use a polymer frame (which was initially criticized by the same idiots as being a "plastic" gun). Finally, what difference does it make? I have compared the 1Zpresso K-max (which is all metal and built like a tank) to the Comandante and, guess what, the Comandante produces a better pour over (by a significant margin). Clearly people who criticize the fact that a polymer is used are people who are too thick to understand that what a product DOES and how it performs (in the real world), is more important than the how it looks.
I Absolutely agree. Heavier doesn't be default mean better quality. Would it be a better product if the lid or the dial was stainless steal? Honestly no. The components that take a heavier beating are all built to handle it. Thanks for the comment!
This comandante grinder (I have the MK4 Version of the c40) is outstanding in every way. It is just so easy to use and the flavour you get out of every grind constantly every time you use it is phenomenal - I find myself more and more using the comandante over my Profitec T-64 and the Eureka mignon XL. I wish there would be an electric grinder on this kind of taste and over all ease of operation - but I'm pretty sure there is just none...
I’m so glad you’re enjoying the grinder! It’s just so consistent and easy to use as well as clean. There are consistent/easy to use electric grinders, it just depends on what you’re willing to spend. You just won’t get the quality at the same price point.
absolutely a video i need to watch, spending some of my wage to buy this beast. hope next year i can buy it. cant wait to level up my brewing experience 😁
Has the C40 price increased recently? I'm seeing them sold for $335-$360 (higher for wood option) in the US. I've seen some other reviewers also say they paid $250. Now the C40 is around the same price as the Kinu M47, which from what I gather was once the more expensive grinder.
That's a great question! They have made a new version of the Comandante called the MK4, where this is the MK3. They made some adjustments to the design, but also raised the price (which is a major bummer)! At this point it's harder to say if the Kinu is now more worth it compared to the Comandante, but I've only ever owned this one, so I can't say for sure. Thanks for the comment!
Absolutely! I know everyone is going to have their own opinions on this type of stuff, and I know my opinion isn’t law. But I’ve really enjoyed this grinder a lot!
I know this thread is about the Comandante...but this bad boy is now $350!! (Gulp!) After some research...i'm narrowing down my choices for premium manual grinders (for my French Press) to Comandante, Timemore G1 Plus, or Porlex mini. Does anyone have some advice or feedback on owning/using the Timemore or Porlex? thanks!
I went for the porlex and please expend a little bit more. A lot of fines and inconsistent. But worst of all is very very slow and stops easily. I grind for more than 5 min easily when I need a fine grind.
It’s pretty crazy honestly! If I was looking to buy a manual grinder now it wouldn’t be as easy of a conversation since the price has gone up by so much. I’ve never used any other higher quality manual grinders, but I doubt I’ll be having any issues with mine any time soon. That’s one thing that’s nice about it. The next time I upgrade it’ll probably be a high quality electric grinder.
Good quality video mate. Only feedback I would give is to try and reduce visual distraction behind the camera because you kept staring off-camera which was distracting. I have a Lido 2 hand grinder, which is great, although I’m considering switching to something that is still great but a bit smaller and has a lid to stop chips jumping out.
Thanks for the tip! Are you referring to the b role footage? Yeah the Lido is pretty bulky that’s for sure. It seems like you can grind a pretty large amount of beans with it though! How long have you had that Lido 2 for? From what I’ve seen they don’t really sell them anymore since the Lido 3 came out.
@@petersamuels-coffee6735 I’m referring to the main talking heads footage, you keep looking off camera to the left of you. Just what I noticed 🤷♂️ I have owned the Lido 2 for about 5 years, it must have been right before the 3 came out, not that much changed tbh, only the collapsible handle as far as I can tell and the colour I suppose. I find that the most I have ever ground is less than 60g, and my normal amount 99%+ off the time is 18g. Like I said above, I’m considering a smaller unit that travels better with me.
@@jnattress Oh yeah! I honestly do have that bad habit. If I’m going to be honest it’s because I’m not totally comfortable talking into a camera just yet, so I tend to look up, down and around when doing so. 🤣 Hopefully I get better soon. Yeah that makes sense. Like I said in my video the most I grind on average is 30g for my typical Chemex and Aeropress recipes.
That’s a good point! I use 30 grams for my Chemex, Aeropress, and French press all the time. So having to grind in 2 batches would get pretty annoying pretty quickly. Haha.
@@petersamuels-coffee6735 I started a small roasting company so I'm mostly doing 22g French Presses for personal drinking now because I'm testing so much coffee. But 30 was also my standard before that. Espresso shots are 14-20g since I need to change the dose a lot to dial in with my Chestnut Slim(Fellow Ode for everything else). @@veganpotterthevegan That's so exciting! Do you have any roasters that inspire you at all? I know Onyx Coffee Lab is one of my personal favorites. It's nice being able to taste the coffee using different methods as well to make sure that you're getting the most out of the beans you're roasting. Percolation methods tend to bring out more of the brighter, fruity flavors naturally in coffee, where French press tends to be a deeper, less complex cup (not as an insult to the French press. I LOVE that method. :D ) Ideally my next grinder would be a Niche Zero. I don't think I'm at the place where I can justify a $2,000 grinder just yet. Haha.
@@petersamuels-coffee6735 I'm all about buying local(I live in Salt Lake) but I've been lucky to live near great roasters in the various cities I've lived. And I'll visit roasters on road trips. Anodyne in Milwaukee, Cat and Cloud in Santa Cruz and Blue Copper here in Utah. *I still prefer French Press above all else because I want oil in my coffee. But I'd really just wanna make more interesting drinks like flavored espresso tonics, soda's with herbed coffee ice cubes, and some drinks not really sold regularly in the US. Other than Turkish coffee(which I will have), I'll do vegan versions of Vietnamese coffee with condensed plant milk, Indian filter coffee, and some fun things with tapioca.
@@veganpotterthevegan That’s awesome! I’ve been to a few coffee shops in Vegas, and mothership was on my list, but it was a bit farther than I wanted to take an Uber for coffee. Hi, I like my Commandante too, but I wouldn't say it's perfect. It's the third manual grinder I have owned. Before Commandante I used Hario Mini, with which I brewed about 1k coffees. The Commandante is in a different league compared to it, making much cleaner cup of coffee and grinding considerably faster. But what like less about the Commandante is the workflow. You have to be careful with putting the beans in, because it can bounce of the shaft supports or get stuck in the axle. The thread for connecting the jar is plastic and grounds gets stuck in it. I think it's the grinder's weakest point an I think I'll break it one day.
Hey there! Congrats on the upgrade! What I tend to do to keep coffee beans from getting stuck is putting the glass bass directly on top at an angle, then pour them in while shuffling it a little bit. I understand the argument about where to use plastic and when to use more sturdy materials, but my experience hasn't changed since I bought it a year ago, and I make coffee nearly every day, on average twice a day. I hope you end up enjoying your purchase! Please feel free to let me know if you find any interesting tricks to improve performance.
@@petersamuels-coffee6735 In the States and Europe they sell it from $350 to whatever they can get, but luckily I found this wonderful business in Canada Caffee Fantastco got it for $313 shipped to me in Florida. Of course I couldn't stop there, also bought the red clix as well.
@@DevReaper that makes sense. I’m glad I got it when I did then! 😅 Hopefully they can get it figured out and lower the price, or maybe even make another model that’s more affordable? 🤷🏻♂️
@Mike Edwards Hey Mike one of the reasons for the increase cost, Is the quality of the machine plus it's made in Germany. In Germany they pay their workers a reasonable salary, Where the zx is made they pay them in pennies per day.
To be honest, that’s your opinion and I respect that. I think it’s easy to call someone who gets very particular when describing coffee or coffee products a hipster. It’s always easier to generalize people instead of getting to know them. Either way, I hope the video helped you find out what you were looking for. I’d never heard of fixie before, but my plan is to mostly stick to coffee. I hope you’re doing well, and that you have a great day.
It's great that you own one of the most respected, well loved hand grinders you can buy today.. But here's the thing...and there's always a but... :D There are a TON of very high quality hand grinders on the market that are a fraction of the cost. If you've got the money and it's no issue, then yes, ALWAYS buy the best. You rule out the guess work and know what you're getting. But just know it is at an exorbitant premium. Budget grinders from Timemore are very high quality and can give you a very good cup also. And these are in the sub-$100 price point. Unless you have the palate sensitivity of a seasoned Q-grader, or worse, a supertaster, then perhaps you might be able to appreciate the Comandante. But otherwise, it's really a waste of money if you can't detect the difference. But it goes without saying, people buy luxury items not for their function, but for their craftsmanship and pride of ownership that you get as part of the experience. I can say this with the utmost sincerity as I am a seasoned coffee guy with lots of time at the bench under his belt with all kinds of equipment, from the cheapest to the most expensive. (see my IG:coffee_rx, as proof of this).
Thanks for the comment! Here's the thing about my experience personally: I don't have a lot of personal reference points. I haven't bought a bunch of different hand grinders in order to determine my favorite. I saw this brand, I heard remarkable things about them, I liked the specs including the custom designed burrs and the 35 gram capacity, and I got it. I can't speak on whether or not the experience with Timemore is superior or similar, because I've never owned one. I'd certainly be willing to compare them if given the opportunity, but I didn't compare this grinder to any other manual hand grinders because I've never owned another one. Also, it's okay to taste a difference if you do a blind comparison of a more expensive product verses a less expensive product. It doesn't make you pretentious or snobby if you try two things and you like the more expensive thing. It's also okay to not taste the difference and go with what fits your budget. Thanks again for the comment and I hope you're having an awesome day.
Your communication skills are so nice and natural. Well done.

@@TheUnrevealer It’s true! Not even every region is the same even though often times coffee grown in certain continents can often be more dense. It’s a case by case scenario. That’s why trying lots of different coffees can be tough, because by the time you got it locked in, you’re halfway through your bag of coffee. Haha
Your story is the same as mine and the same ending😂
Hi, great video! Please let me know what coffee bean holder you are using?
I mean do you have a container which releases CO2 gas?
I use the Fellow Atmos. It creates a vacuum so the aging process of the beans go way down.
Anyone done Flair/lever espresso with the C40?
Nice video! thanks for sharing , dude:)
Absolutely! I know everyone is going to have their own opinions on this type of stuff, and I know my opinion isn’t law. But I’ve really enjoyed this grinder a lot!
what is the least amount of clicks you used for a v60?

Just what I noticed 🤷♂️
I have owned the Lido 2 for about 5 years, it must have been right before the 3 came out, not that much changed tbh, only the collapsible handle as far as I can tell and the colour I suppose.
A lot of grinders maxed at 20-25g are espresso biased grinders. And the coarse grounds they produce prove that
That’s a good point!
It's not great a fine tuning like the Commandante is🙃.
Mothership in Vegas is high on my list of unmapped, great roasters. Anodyne in Milwaukee, Cat and Cloud in Santa Cruz and Blue Copper here in Utah.
*I still prefer French Press above all else because I want oil in my coffee. But I also still love my moka pot, despite having a nice lever machine. I'm waiting on a Knob grinder off Kickstarter. Not sure when I'll buy an electric grinder for espresso but I will at some point. Kinda in early/distant plans to open a coffee cocktail bar. Lattes and the norm would be available.
One of my top 5 favorite coffee shops in the US is a place called Public Us in Vegas! If you’re in the area you should check them out. That makes sense to me for sure as far as having more texture in your coffee. Not to mention it’s actually healthier for you as well. What drew you to the knob grinder?
I love that! The more specialty offer shops the better. And the more people there are exploring the boundaries of what coffee can be the better as well! I certainly hope that dream of yours becomes a reality. What’s the name of your roasting company?
Come to islam n success
It's not $250🤣🤣🤣
That’s wild! You’re right! When I bought mine a year ago I paid $250 for it. I wonder why the price has gone up so much.
@@petersamuels-coffee6735 it's gone up in price recently due to supply issues.
You are just too much of a cliche Urban Hipster to take seriously. Do you also do fixie reviews?
To be honest, that’s your opinion and I respect that. I think it’s easy to call someone who gets very particular when describing coffee or coffee products a hipster. It’s always easier to generalize people instead of getting to know them. Either way, I hope the video helped you find out what you were looking for.
I’d never heard of fixie before, but my plan is to mostly stick to coffee. I hope you’re doing well, and that you have a great day.
It's great that you own one of the most respected, well loved hand grinders you can buy today.. But here's the thing...and there's always a but... :D
There are a TON of very high quality hand grinders on the market that are a fraction of the cost.
