An interview with the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton. Unfortunately I have only the audio so it is accompanied by various pics of his time travelling in the Tardis.
What a super charismatic man. A true joy to hear him thank you so much for posting. Despite never being around when Patrick played Doctor who he has without doubt become my favourite. He always had a definite twinkle in his eye. God bless him
I Love PT's attitude about his job. He knew and enjoyed the fact that he was a character actor, and to me, this is a welcome and refreshing change from modern actors who have a need to be the star of everything. Most modern actors don't realize that such actors are often more important than the "stars" so people who ARE character actors occasionally either push themselves till they break or just give up. Good character actors are a dying breed and phenomenal ones Like PT are just about extinct.
Can I merely repeat what digipeeper just said?!! I agree! Patrick was so mysterious that you never got sick of him on screen! About the only man I'd ever give a warm hug to! And well done 4 uploading this. Thanks so much.
Yes I said it, he's a my Doctor and I do wish he was still alive! Hartnell may started it all but Troughton was the pioneer of what the Doctor is and should be, impish, sarcastic, quick witted, exciting and never proved wrong. Tom Baker was the tall curley version of Pat but McCoy is the 2nd Doctor of the 80's not C.Baker. Most Whovians thought I was mad favoring Pat as my top 1 Doctor but what do they know?
Bill was different from them all. He was, well... malevolent in many ways. He was unacomadating, Pragmatic & intrepid. But warmed as the years went on. His best example of character is probably in Edge of Destruction or Keys to Marinus. His worst is Gun Fighters Oh Lord.. :( To this date, the First Episode of Dr Who is the 1st one; An Unearthly Child. It's just superb Sci-Fi with plenty of Darkness & Mystery. It's a shame that Dalek Maser plan doesn't exist. That's his Flag Ship story. Trust Me!
I can see evidence in the closeups of Hartnell's face he had the acting ability. I've not seen that technique used much in the following Doctor's. I blame the BBC however for shooting the program so crudely at times. I'm not talking cheezy sets, it's the editing. The sound. The flippin' direction. You mentioned "Gunfighters". It';s the "Plan 9" eps for DW. SO bad it's almost good. Most annoying was the singer though. I think things improved greatly with PT though. Everything was just better.
Wonderful character, fine human being! Correct about giving too much info about ones self out to public. Not enough kept secret about the Doctor's origins.destroyed the mysteriousness of the character cultivated by the first two Doctors. Patrick Troughton's Doctor encouraged races to stand and fight for what was right and develop independence and not rely on people like him indefinitely! A great portrayal of a great character by a great character actor. on people like him
You're spot-on about Davison. TO me, he and McCoy were the worst Doctor's. (Tennant' saying he thought Davison was the best Doctor appears to me to be akin to brown-nosing the Daddy of David's main squeeze, Georgia Moffat. AND quite frankly, I'm ready for DT to get it over and done with. Too much is being made of HIM when the show is about THE DOCTOR, the part, not just one person playing it). Patrick Troughton was the best with fans. Hartnell?. I try, but I just can't like his years.
Alzheimers can effect on that way. In fact, I'd heard that Jon Pertwee could be very nasty with people too. . Troughton, even in his last interview was always "one with the fans" atleast in the US even though at that time, we might've had 3 complete stories of his to see. (Ofcourse, we had his movies) I met Davison btw. He didn't really have anything to say really. Kinda' dry, like his portrayal of the Doctor. Let me repeat. I'm ready for DT to move on and Matt and Moffatt to do "Who Right"
It might be an interesting diddie (or not) to some, that few people actually want to bring-up Wm. Hartnell. Why?. The deep, dark not-so-secret "secret" that he had more than a wee bit of old school bigotry to him. Being a Yank, all I can say is he acted sometimes the way he really was as a person. Suffering from the edgy stage of Alzheimer's. However, and these were different times, he wasn't tolerant of certain races and definatley not of gays. But I digress. He was a mean man. (cont next post)
I find it difficult to believe that Hartnell was anti-gay. One of his best friends on the Army Game was Charles Hawtrey who has hardly discreet about such matters.
With most of his adventures becoming a lost myth because of the BBC's neglect. A Child of the 80's and 90's he is and will be my Doctor. Tom Baker or Jon Pertwee is not my fave compared to Troughton! Wish he was still alive!
Dear old Pat! This must be quite rare - great to hear words from the man himself! Thanks for sharing!

Quite right and because character actors concentrate on their art rather than being a star they are much better actors.

Fascinating interview and amazing collection of accompanying photos. A lot of them are new to me, for sure.
Thanks for the post.
I know. Unfortunately I've only heard the full interview rebroadcast as a radio interview hence the pics.
When Pat talks about Chaplin, i don't know about you but i think he's a brilliant chaplinesque part! :D x

on people like him
I know one of his children and I'm friends with some of his grandchildren
Surrolk do they any family resemblance?
Pat Troughton I believe was married twice;simultaneously! I wonder where he found the time for such a prolific career....
Hey, you're right!
Where does the pic of the 2nd Doctor on New Earth come from? That'd make a great wallpaper!
At 4:21 - am I mistaken, or is that a drawing of a new series Cybus Corp. Cyberman?
Very odd.... I wonder what is the source of that shot? Was it maybe taken at a convention back then?
@Surrolk are they like him?????? what do they think of patrick
It's obviously photoshopped, since the background is from Curse of Fenric.
The first picture doesn't look like him.
It's from when he was younger.
Hey! Look at 4:21, that sketching that Patrick is pointing at looks exactly like the current series cyberman! When and where was that shot taken?
