Wheelchair Swap - From a standard TiLite ZRA to my custom Society Wheelchairs ride!

  • Опубліковано 1 сер 2020
  • Every time I have been forced by funding to use a 'registered dealer' to order adaptive equipment (wheelchairs, cushions, hand controls and vehicle modifications) I have been disappointed and stuck with ill fitting gear.
My new wheelchair was measured and manufactured by the same set of hands!! I am so happy with the entire process and outcome of my very custom measured chair (to the quarter inch!).
    0:45 TiLite ZRA Titanium (1-1/4")
    1:19 Society Wheelchairs - custom wheelchair (1")
3:08 Potato Sac Co. - custom pouch underneath chair
7:50 Michelin, Country Rock Tires & Carbon Spinergy rims (old chair wheels)
8:35 Preferred tires - Continental, Top Contact Winter II
10:31 New cushion - Varalite, Meridian. Not my fave.
11:32 Old cushion - Ride Forward. It has lasted me 5 years, I would get another one.
    12:58 TiLite Composite Wheel Locks
14:18 Solid seat pan vs. strapping only
16:13 Fix frame wheelchair without any hardware
17:36 Velcro used to fix the cushion to the frame to prevent it from shifting around between the wheels
18:30 Adding a reflector so that the wheelchair is visible to traffic in the dark
    19:55 Old vs New comparison
22:06 Grip tape on the foot plate
23:17 Old vs New comparison cont.
    My new wheelchair:
    societywheelch...
With a Varalite - Meridian cushion (I'm not linking this because I am still waiting to hear back from their customer service department about the questionable durability and design of this cushion).
    My old chair:
TiLite, titanium, ZRA. It is great and durable, but not customizable to anything beyond the round full inch. As the user we are not allowed to talk to the manufacturer (Permobil) about what we want. Someone is stuck with the sales offices, sales people and OTs that seemingly have no idea about life in a wheelchair, that don't always do the best recording.
With a Ride Forward, off the shelf, standard foam cushion.
    My fave tire:

Oh my goodness you are such a beautiful woman. Stay strong.❤ P.S. I love those fancy hand-rims. I do prefer the 5" casters as larger casters just seem to get over bumps a bit better. With guns like yours, I'm surprised your chair isn't made out of steel. I love that footplate and calf strap. I need those in my life.

I am feeling pretty let down by my new Tilite chair. It is so heavy that I can't get it across my body into the car and I am using my old chair that is to small for me. It wasn't scripted as I asked by the retailer so not entirely Tilite's fault either.

    • @montebank4

@@kyliemccutcheon9969 TiLite way to heavy. Like old school hospital chairs. Lots of people went back to old chairs. But tilite is losing ground in market as people move on.

I am in Australia and thought that Tilite were really light chairs. There aren't many brands in Australia that make Titanium chairs and the lack of regard from the retailer as to how I wanted my chair is staggering (I've used a chair for 20 years). I don't really know what to do now as I can't stay in my old chair due to pressure risks but can't afford another one either.

Not that its applicable to your new chair but you’ve mentioned a hand cycle a couple times and wanted to point out the GRIT freedom chair if you haven’t already seen one. I helped weld the first batch of frames together and have been keeping tabs on them ever since. It seems like a really neat platform and people seem to love it. Anyways. Love the videos. Cheers.

Thank you for all of your vids! They are very helpful. I’ve been a wheelchair user/para for 25 yrs. now and to watch someone that gets it is awesome. Also, putting products on here that I may not have known about otherwise is great. I wanted to know about your leg strap from your old chair? I have a flimsy Velcro strap. Yours looks very stable. I’m so glad you have a new chair that is lighter and more suited to your needs. 😁

Para 35 yrs. New chair always a learning curve. Seeing the skinny casters you want to transfer, I suggest pushing for wider soft rolls- same size, fit std. forks, but hardly ever stick in sidewalk cracks or even cobblestones. Good luck with new chair!

Hi from Australia. I am a quad of 33 years. When we get a new chair we go through the process of trying different wheels, castors, brakes and dump. We then try it out before purhase to ensure we are satisfied with how we sit etc. Any modifications needed are then made. It's not like what you are going through Teanelle, having to change parts from your old chair to your new one.

I have a Jay Carbon Fiber backrest on one of my spare chairs like what's on your old chair and I've hated it since day one. It looked good on the brochure and I thought it would be pretty light seeing since it was carbon fiber I wouldn't notice much increased weight at all. Nope, I was wrong. The backrest seems like it weighs a ton more than traditional backrests and I took that thing off only after using it for three days. I'm sure the aluminum mounting hardware weighs a good amount by itself but I still don't like it. I was "oooohed and ahhhhed" by the whole carbon fiber thing but boy was I wrong. Never again will I ever have any sort of hard type backrest over a traditional fabric type of backrest. Even a two or three pound increase in weight can seem like a ton when you're lifting a chair in and out of a car multiple times a day like I do.

Hey there! I'm a T4 SCI dude from the east coast (NB). I went 25+ years without brakes because I used my everyday chair as my basketball chair and I wanted to keep it light. I can't remember why, but I started using them again about 10 years ago. I rarely use them but they do come in handy sometimes. Discovering slanted floors always seems to occur at the worst times. I like the new chair, but I don't have the balls to order a new chair without COG adjustment, (which would require caster adjustment capability) or a folding adjustable back. Speaking of, I just don't find those fabric backs very comfortable. I know it will add weight, but do you think you'll ever put an aftermarket backrest on? I wanted to check out Society Wheelchairs but it looks like they went out of business. I've always stuck with the single compartment 4" Roho with the incontinence cover. (Never experienced a pressure sore.) I look forward to discovering your other videos. I welcome you to check out my videos as well. Mounting a blade to the back of my Audi TTS and plowing my driveway. Good luck!

You've done well putting your audio and video all together, I am seeing some flare that makes me think you need to clean your lens, or the filter on the front of your lens. It appears that you have strong window light coming in from camera left. you may want to get some sort of card to put on the left side of the camera to stop the light from hitting the lens, this should give you a sharper image with better contract; which camera are you using? Audio sounds good other than the fact you can tell that there is a lot of hard surfaces in your room, but your voice is crystal clear and easy to understand, there is also no noise of your microphone rubbing against you or your clothing, which is good. Nice choice of music, too. You may wish to add some lighting at some point, but that's all that much more to setup every time you want to vlog.
Even though I have many friends who are wheelchair users, not being a wheelchair user myself, I don't really know what would make a comfortable seat, but it seems to me that for all day sitting, your old back would be much more supportive and comfortable than the sling style back of your new chair. I love the looks of the gray tires with the red section and the black rim.
I had no idea the Michelin made tires for wheelchairs; are they actually a bike tire that just fit the wheelchair rim? (Not that I know that Michelin made bike tires, either.)
    Wishing you an awesome week!

The drastic difference in axle height also worries me as a fellow wheelchair user since your hands are further from the center of your wheels. If you have a black frame...permanent magic marker covers up the scratches. Swapping push rims is not that expensive either. Do you plan to swap the push rims to your old chair? A bike shop should easily be able to do that...and you will still have the wheels. The back on the old chair is obviously better. Please, please put the back from your ZRA on it. I had to go out and back in to see my message...weird. Oh, I was going to ask if Society Wheelchairs was in Canada...forgetting where you are 😂.
Can you please put a link on where to get that shirt. I tried looking at the True North Strong site and they don't have that design...or even tank top. I love my biceps and shoulders (got them from playing women's basketball in college believe it or not and I'm only 5'0". I was a center). and want to show them off. I don't have triceps though 😕.
I'm telling you, you got totally ripped off with that cushion. It's maybe $400 something...even on the internet in CND...and it's guaranteed the wrong size. Not every person who sews tags sew the right size onto the cushion.
For the breaks, can't you build the tube up with hockey tape or something and then fit the breaks on?
I HATE straps on the bottom and have been trying to get a solid pan on the bottom of mine. There is absolutely no support.
I have this as a bag underneath: It does need loops if you want it to hang down: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G9VZ88M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
What are you going to do with the old chair...keep it as a spare. I need one if you are selling it. Mine is a 16 X 16 but it is way too wide.

I fell 2 stories and broke my L3 + L4. My spinal cord however was intact and not injured. I do however have chronic back pain when I bend or sit for too long. I also broke both my heel bones and they had to fuse them so I cant walk more than 6 km during an entire day (Although I am greatful that I can walk a bit). I can't believe the cost of a wheelchair and all the disability equipment - it's insane. I have so much admiration for what you persevere every day. My struggles aren't near as hard as yours as I don't have to worry about bladder and bowel problems either and all the inaccesability you constantly have to face. I was wondering, do you have any back pain from the surgery on your back? I was told by my surgeon that some people get pain and others dont after such a surgery. I had a burst fracture so I have rods and a CAGE to replace the 2 vertabrae.

I was hoping you could/will answer some questions if you have the time. I understand in the description about you're pretty much at the mercy of the "experts" who aren't daily WC users. Am seeking to get my first personal WC soon. Was considering a Tilite but now am not so sure. If you were to give advice, are you confident in recommending for one to just go ahead and get a custom WC instead of from a "big brand name" manufacturer? Is the weight the same or is the new one lighter? Is the cost basically the same or different? (bottom line cost not accounting for insurance) Last year initially was fitted but there were issues with filling paperwork properly, miscommunications between the local DME company and my doctor, etc that went on for so many months I gave up on them. I've seen another UA-camr that got a custom WC and his opinions seemed justifiable to custom versus brand names. Thank you in advance should you reply.

    • @allykaufman8463
      @allykaufman8463 4 роки тому

For a new WC user, I personally would recommend getting a chair from a major manufacturer for your first ever chair. You need to be able to make adjustments to your chair as you figure out what works for you/ what you like/ don't like. A custom/ adjustable chair from tilite or any of the other major companies will allow you to move the center of gravity, the dump, the backrest hight and more so you can find what you like best. After you figure that stuff out with your first chair, then it might be worth getting a custom chair that fits your exact preferences, but not before then. Trust me, having adjustability in your first chair is super important

@@allykaufman8463 Thank you, I do appreciate your feedback. Was something I didn't consider as far as COG, slight adjustments and such. I didn't notice any little mechanisms that allowed for that on some of the custom builds I've seen in vids.

I'm about 3 hours north of the Miami Project To Cure SCI and have taken part in some of their studies. Do you think if you were closer, it's something that you would participate in? As for my hope with SCI problem solving... as a person with an SCI I feel there is a list of other desires before I care to be stumbling around trying to walk again; bladder, bowel, sexual function....all win over wiggling toes. That said, if walking were a thing I wouldn't say no.
I've been registered with the MI project since the beginning of broke back. I don't believe it's going to be stem cells. I'd sign up for an implant tomorrow.

It is funny how a chair becomes part of you

True that! I'm a 32 year T4 complete and I hate getting new chairs because its not like you can try them on like a pair of shoes. Much time is spent specing out a new chair and dealing with lame ass insurance dictatorships to end up with an ill fitting sled.

Can't you swap your casters. I can mine, I surprised you don't have us watch it L.O.L. good video but you could have chopped a bunch and just used the time to point out the finer points and it could have been way shorter and better

I do all this myself. The criticisms could have been chopped a bunch.

Why don't you have a ROHO cushion. You just was the rubber bladder off if you pee on yourself. The cover just let's the fluid run onto the rubber cushion the I just wash it and zip a washed cover on it. Simple no smell takes 20 min

Way to just drop your chair on thr ground. I know it's durable, but they gotta last 7 years. Unless you get chairs paid for by insurance quicker than me, but as I know D.M.G. Durable Medical Goods or whatever chairs are conciderded are only provided every 7 years.

I have trouble understanding that that chair was measured for you. It is obviously too wide and the back is way too high for you. You are swimming in it. Do Society actually know what they are doing. I see so many north americans with ill fitting wheelchairs. What is going on there? By the way - Para for 43 years here.

Why not just put a puppy pad between the cushion and the seat? Insurance companies will view $1,100 as nothing. It's the people on disability or limited incomes that will say 'OMG...how much!'? If you ask me (and you didn't), I think you downgraded...straps are way less supportive than what was on the TiLite. You make the solid pan sound bad. Not everyone can be mobile and transfer easily...the straps will end up being stretched out and less supportive. Are you going to swap out the hand rims?
