      {but in all seriousness, the proto-AI is getting really good at playing match-maker). Enjoy the bing.

      @@jenniferpanther2979 Hello other future OG'er's, as I think the kids still say. Yeah, agreed. Absolutely lucky find.
      I've built up a manageable number of vintage patterns over the past year. And I just found a ton of wool at Value Village. Because Mid-century Tailoring needs to be a part of my life. The timing is perfect...

    I bought a black swing coat from the 50’s in a thrift store. It has dolman sleeves, so not too wide in the sleeves. I replaced the shoulder pads that were falling apart. It has some weight in the hem so it swings back into place. It’s so elegant I wear it for nights out

    Hum. Do you think you might have missed a pleat in the back? I think that's how I would have solved the problem. A box pleat would be historically accurate.

    • @CarolineElizabethMartin
      @CarolineElizabethMartin  3 роки тому +1

      No, there was no pleat in the pattern, but now that you mention it I could’ve added one to solve the problem. I assume I cut the panels too large, sometimes in an effort not to cut the pattern I add a little extra fabric. I’m glad I took everything in because it’s a perfect size for me now.

    This is the second of your videos I've watched.
    I started sewing in 1968, and eventually took tailoring classes, as well as did an apprenticeship one summer with a seamstress who sewed for wives of dignitaries in the DC area before retirement.
    I'm sure it's just me being persnickity but you do a LOT of machine hemming, etc, that should actually be done by hand. As well, when the weave of fabrics is so loose that the metal of covered buttons shows through, there needs to be a lining under the garment fabric to prevent the metal showing through. Oh, and I'm not understanding how/why you thread your machine the way you do. You could eliminate several steps by allowing the springs to place the thread where it is meant to go.
    I DO enjoy the general content but when one invests in quality--ie expensive--fabric, one expects hemming to be done by hand as well as other handwork to secure collars and such.
    I especially enjoy vintage clothing, so continue to develop that content please!

    • @CarolineElizabethMartin
      @CarolineElizabethMartin  2 роки тому

      That’s really cool, yea I didn’t realize the metal would show through the fabric, after the video I went back and redid the buttons. This was my first boucle suit so it was a learning process and a lot of people commented giving me tips which I appreciate. I thread my machine according to its manual. My hand stitches are not nearly as neat as my machine stitching, that’s why I machine hem, plus I like how small the machine stitching is with such a loose fabric. I very much appreciate the advice.

      @@CarolineElizabethMartin I'm one of those born in the wrong era...and--chuckle--my mom and grandmother lived by the adage that one needed to have ladylike hand-stiching...and that the back of your handwork should look as good as the front. But...I did it, and it became habit. :)

    caroline doesn't worry about the whole having disliked pink and not knowing why I feel like society has told us growing up that if we want to be taken seriously we must hate pink because "feminism". and how you can't be a feminist if you are girly or have a wish for a more traditional role in the house. what I found was the thing that finally helped me accept it was an interview done with the ladies who wave the flags at the race car tracks where that talk about it and how they are the ones who choose their outfit's they aren't pressured into them.

  • @stevezytveld6585

    When I was a kid, with irregular-tightly-curled hair, I would literally have to dodge the blue-haired little old ladies in their fur coats. Because? They would see me and start squealing about how I looked Just Like Shirley Temple (I've almost reached the point of forgiving her for being a corporate identity). Then they would ask if they could have a curl. Do not do this to small children. They/I will assume you mean to yank the curl cluster right out of your head and walk away...
    As a result. HATED pink. Dropped the frills out of my life. Only to have the colour and the flounce return at this late date. Turns out it works with my colouring. Go figure.
