The subtle nuances of Buddy's playing goes undetected by many listeners, even to drummers who think they need to criticize the late great Buddy Rich. His fills always set up the brass in such a way that you knew what was coming. His sense of phrasing was masterful and his hands were always moving and never idle playing a boring timing pattern. The rudiments and sticking patterns were always propelling the music with forward momentum. Buddy's playing brought the music to life and to quote an old cliche "was often imitated and never duplicated". His mastery of technique made his playing look effortless, but anyone who ever held a pair of sticks knows that what he played took tons of effort. The speed of his singles always brought about awe from those who cold only dream of playing that fast. The interplay between his foot and hands took on a whole different dimension as he simultaneously accented the woodwinds and high brass while supporting the trombones and lower reeds. Buddy's personality was amplified by his approach to the drums. You could hear his passion as well as see it on his face. Buddy was one of a kind. Like him or not-compare him to who you think is or was the best for whatever reason-you can't deny that Buddy was one of the best jazz drummers who ever held a pair of sticks.
only thing you could critisise is that he never really did somethink remarkably new. He never really evolved like a lot of other top drummers. His style is very traditional and most of the time i think his drumming is just more like a display of amazing technique.
There’s some shots from underneath as well on the West Side Story solo from the Mr. Drums live on King street video too I believe 😮 check that one out!! He performed two sets that concert and the albums The Lost Tapes and Channel One Set
Great stuff as always from one of the true masters. Off topic, but I don't know that I've ever seen that kind of tom mount on a Ludwig kit, especially as far back as the early 1980s. I'm used to seeing 'steer horns'.
Why don’t I feel as impressed by his solos as other drummers are? All I hear him doing are snare drum rolls with different accents and rim shots and then he just drops a bass drum in here and there. It’s cool but why is everyone so blown away by his solos? They seem boring and one dimensional to me…
What a dumb comment. Buddy was anything but one dimension. He was incredibly inventive with his playing. He would comprise solos with just his cymbals, play on the rims and sides of drums, stick on stick playing, timpani floor solos. Plus isn’t “all I hear are snare drum rolls and bass drum” a bit of a stupid comment when you acknowledge buddy played a limited kit and not a Bozzio drum set.
Same by me. The thing which is stands out from his solos is the amazing technique which basically no one come close to. but from musical standpoint id much rather listen to a benny greb or jojo mayer solo. much more satisfyint to listen to. But you should also consider that he doesnt have a modern kit with a lot of diffrent tones and sounds.

Thanks so much for saying what we all wanted to say!
One of a kind and understood how to play drums musically. My favorite drummer!

1982 was the last year, Buddy played Ludwig.
He switched to a restored Slingerland Radio King set the next year, until his death in 1987.
I remember Buddy passing away. My whole jazz family listened to many of his greatest recordings that night.
Buddy waves, gives a nod to the band. Later, on the bus...................
Sam is the type of guy to open the door for asking "Did you remember to lock the door?"
