I'm glad someone else likes this movie. I was surprised to find so many reviews tearing it to shreds, but it's one of the few that's stuck in my mind in the past few years.
As for Karen Gillan? Well, fortunately for me, this was the first show in which I saw her, so I cannot typecast her, except as a gorgeous and talented lady.

The Lasser Glass in itself is a lovecraftian theme that is rarely done with subtlety or a narrow scope. A threat to humanity that is beyond humanity. Whether in our ability to understand it or as an inhuman monster. It is a threat but not on a broad scale. It's a trail that leaves a sinister scar across generations. The glazs isn't an object possessed or housing something. It IS the entity.

That's what I liked about the film. It was unexplained WHAT the mirror exactly was.

    • @kinagrill
      @kinagrill 3 роки тому +5

@@Ocrilat It's clear that it's.... not a mirror. it's.... something else. We can only perceive it as a mirror. If I should give a guess, I think it's a damage to 'our' reality that radiates out form that mirror. Perhaps it was made with something that contains this bit of 'reality fragmenting' substance. Hence why any level of exposure to being near it is enough to affect people. I doubt it's even an 'entity' as such cuz that'd be putting too much of a 'creature' to it. It merely IS, Hell if we took something like a canon-lovecraftian lore focus on it, the Mirror might very well hold a miniscule fragment of Azathoth within it. Just being near it is enough to cause mild effects, but actually LOOKING upon it is where those tendrils of insanity begins to worm their way inside your mind - quite like how actually hearing/seeing something lovecraftian in that universe is literally damaging to the mind and sanity of someone. The father and mother also only seem to get WORSE as they spend time infront of the mirror.
A purely scientific outlook could postulate a type of radiation that we dunno how to detect yet, what exactly it's made up of and how it functions specifically. Perhaps something in the whatever-substance-makes-up-the-mirror-itself contains this radiation.

They actually did refer back to the temperature thing later in the movie. When she is desperately trying to get her brother to believe her she makes a point of saying that the temperature has risen 3 degrees since they started. He passes it off as all of her lights creating heat, but the point is that it is referenced. A small correction but it does serve to make u question her sanity and wonder whether or not it was her or her brother who actually deserved to be in the nuthouse.

I think both needed it. Tim is a lot more stable than Kaylie initially. A lot more precautions could have been taken to avoid that 'accidentally standing in the way of the anchor-axe thingy and then tamper-proof that with some sort of sensor so even trying to get past it will cause a likewise shock to the body and mind like with the timer-alarm of Kaylie's husband calling her.
I never noticed tho, but is there a certain timelength from that 'shock' to when the mirror can insert it's influence again?
I also wondered... why not just close your eyes and raise a gun and shoot, since you cannot say for sure if you're aiming correctly or not, thus you cannot be sure if you're actively aiming spot on or a little bit off?
Also a better timer thing would have been to have the mirror drop from a height if the timer goes out, and then also stop anyone from being able to directly touch it as well. Hence why I theorize Kaylie's been affected since childhood and that has lead to how she didn't want to destroy the image initially, but just prove that IT was the cause of her parents going crazy and such. and that Tim was innocent. She did a lot that could be considered 'smart', but equally much that at closer inspection by an outside source (aka. ME!) will show how flawed her approach is in terms of her own security.

I think this film is best without any prequels or sequels. It's a perfect film on its own. They'd probably end up spoiling the lore behind the mirror if they were to continue the story. And in my opinion, sometimes it's best to leave the lore unexplained. But don't get me wrong- if done right, I'd be very intrigued to learn more about it.

@@deusdeaconReviews What they should do is make a connected universe and have other unrelated objects of whatnot be of note. Perhaps the Burial Spot of the ACTUAL lilith (adam's first and very flawed wife according to... some parts of christianity/judaism... I think?) has always held some sort of sexual or prostitution locale to it (from a tribalistic depravity-hut, to a bordello, etc. etc.), then maybe set it into a victorian period era with like a boarding school for girls where things begin to go truely bad, since that perversion, over time, will grow more and more extreme, what was before pleasurable has become mere Ennui (sorry for more french, it's just a perfect word for it).
Or use something like Art Pieces tied to murders/disappearances - everyone seem able to point out remarkable resemblances between the missing people are the people in the art pieces and the fact they hadn't actually noticed the person in the painting prior to the disapperance (most of them very artfully horrific or just very unsettling in an undefinable way), but beyond that no one seems to go and suspect 'monster art' of course. Just small hints here and there. Maybe twisted versions return in horrific horror-scares and it's never clearly defined if it's all just hallucinations or if there's actually something to the whole art gallery being lovecraftian. Don't put a legit this/that notation. It's up to the viewer to judge. All clues should be at least in part be dismissive but at the same time confirmative so even the viewer (us) can say for sure if the events in the movie are lovecraftian or just.... hallucinatory episodes caused by 'insert reason that will be mentioned in-movie as a plausible explanation..... kinda like how the original Total Recall to this day still have people arguing both narratives as an ending as the true one.
Or a space ship exploring a black hole due to 'reasons'.... maybe it's unique, perhaps a signal has been detected from it, maybe a big silver orb with sigil-like iconography edge into it is hovering just at the edge of the Black Hole's primary gravitational pull.... whatever.
All of it just having a focus around the effects of that black hole, getting too close to it, experiencing time being distorted, realising they've been approaching the blackhole even further, even after having made a full 180 toget away from it, etc. tons of sensory manipulation for both the characters but also the viewers. Like Event Horizon mixed with that Star Trek Voyager episode where Voyager gets too close to a black hole and they cannot seem to get away from it because what they see and what is sensed is mirrored by the event horizon of the black hole's bending of light, etc. etc.

The one problem I do have is that I'm pretty sure that anchor would have destroyed the mirror too. I'm no nautical expert, but I know anchors are REALLY heavy, and I doubt a woman's neck would be enough to stop the force of that thing smashing that mirror into little bitty pieces...sure she'd still be VERY dead, but so would the mirror.

I thought Katee Sackoff as Marie was the creepiest part of the whole movie. Not really when she's full blown crazy. But when her paranoia is escalating and she's becoming more and more unstable and neglectful of her own personal health and her family duties. That scene where she's looking at her self in the mirror revealing that gaping wound is so fucking well done, I love it.

Mike Flanagan is a director to watch out for. So far he has delivered three solid psychological thrillers (this film, Absentia and Hush). He understands the importance of tension and holding back on spoon-feeding the audience. To him, we are on a need-to-know basis and we only find out enough to make us think, but never to truly CONFIRM.
Plus, you are right by saying the Lasserglass (I fucking LOVE that name) is Lovecraftian to it's core. Additionally, a lot of Lovecraft's stories concentrated on the mental health of its characters and by the end, that health has deteriorated beyond recognition or has taken an enormous blow that will never be reconciled.

    • @deusdeaconReviews

I felt absentia would have been better with just a bit more mythos. Here in oculus there are so many details (however vague) that we can use to construct a wonderful backstory and expanded universe. I think the monster in absentia was much more interesting in concept than the lasser glass but they didn’t really do anything with it. I know they were going for an “is it or isn’t it” theme but that only works if the movie is appealing to our fear of insanity. If you’re going to have a monster commit to the monster

What bothered me most about this movie is that, no matter what the kids may have said about the mirror, it's pretty obvious that the father had tortured the mother to death, so how the heck did Tim get committed for self defense? Even though the cops took him away, I think he must have been committed because he had trouble adjusting, and so he was dismissed (because his insurance refused to keep paying) for some other reason. Nothing else really makes any sense at all.
As to Tim and Kaylee disagreeing on the memories, I always just assumed that was because of the therapist brainwashing him to disbelief himself.

there's many MANY haunted mirror stories, mirrors have always been slightly creepy to people so its only natural, but seeing the grim reaper in a mirror and what goes on in this film is quite different, in my opinion.

2 things: the ending doesn’t work because that much weight on the anchor would have smashed through her, the mirror and the wall. Second, I view the mirror as the eye of Nyaralthotep since the mirror feeds on and causes insanity just like the great old one himself

Great review. I just saw this movie yesterday and searched out some discussions on it, and your is my favorite.
I agree, by the way, that it’s more interesting if Kaylie’s husband wasn’t there and isn’t dead. Because it means the mirror can do even more “world-building,” influencing cameras and showing both people the same visions.

seriously I don't know what movie scares the shit out of me more, simply because this movie implies your basically fighting a being who can keep you eternally locked in a dream, its like when your having a nightmare that you wake up from only to find out your in another nightmare, only to wake up and find yourself in another nightmare, only to wake up and find yourself in another nightmare etc.... you can't even be sure if you've left the house even if you give up on trying to destroy the thing and just want to run, the moment your eyes lock contact with it, you might as well be a fly caught in a spiders web. That is what horrifies me, you can't even fight it, you can never know truly if your awake......or asleep.....

This film suffers from one insanely big flaw that actually ruins the ending for me. a 40 lb boat anchor with a 10 lb dumbell handle welded on and at least 60 lbs of weight on it free falling would end up with 110 lbs falling with enough force to send her straight through the mirror, drywall, studs and exterior brick. in short, the mirror could not survive that incident. However........
It serves as an amazing eye of the Crawling Chaos, the Blind, Voiceless, Mindless, Gargoyle whose soul is Nyarlethotep!

I think the fact Kaylie wants to do that experiment is the mirror's initial influencing of her to stop her from growing up and wanting to DESTROY it instead. Whereas the Brother has been through god-knows what kinds of therapies and medical treatments, so he might be more stable and, well, never been interested in the mirror. This also gives hints that Kaylie is clearly weakminded where as Tim, her brother, has been through tons of therapy and whatnot and has hardened up and whatnot, what with their mis-remembering of memories and such.
Kaylie is affected initially at childhood. Also, the fact they merely let that anchor be hanging like that without any protective measures to stop them from being in the way.... like, say, bolted-in-place plexiglass walls that keeps the area the anchor axe thingy can swing and the mirror itself - for with perhaps a tremor sensor set up so even if they were influenced to try and get inside, they'd get a similar shock to the system as with the timer alarms and such.
I even think it has a forget-me-now effect in people that's only be minor-exposed to it. Like those cops, anyone that might come and pick up the mirror post-ending for whatever reason, etc.

It's also interesting to consider, can the mirror just not effect the kids, thus why the mother of 1 of the victims killed her, and it seemed like they nearly went the same way, or does it just view them as weak so something it can play around with for it's own enjoyment? It seems to potentially effect them a bit with the voice in the phone, as it's not really been shown capable of doing standard ghost things, so that would imply it was doing some mind games, but maybe that is all it can manage for them.

I have a theory about the time shenanigans in this movie. I think the mirror was able to effect both timelines because it was in the same house (even in the same spot in the house) during these events. If they had done this in a rented apartment somewhere, there would be no connection to the past with the kids. But if the entity is timeless (a true eldrich being), then it's possible it being in the same spot in the same house allowed it to connect the timelines in some way. That's why there is so much crossover between the two (at the end when the past and present are clearly effecting and interacting with eachother). Just a theory. But the only one that makes sense to me.

Here's a thought what if the mirror was using them all the time which makes sense why it let them live. If it can prevent you from doing a simple action such as breaking it then it may as well been manipulating the sister into trying this whole endeavor to futility. Because let's face it messing with an item that can literaly control your actions is a bad idea especialy if the longer you look at it the more it affects you. What i would do is cover the mirror and call a couple of workers to destroy it while it is covered. If the mirror could get away from that then it would be impossible to destroy it.

Yep, there are countless ways of dealing with it, though we can assume the mirror was using them the entire time i mean come on what would the cameras record two people who had traumatic experiences acting crazy especialy after one of them was released from the nut house. It was an excersize in stupidity, at least put the miror in a big brother house it would turn some heads and nobody would be able to blame you unless they admit the mirror was evil.

The dream at the start of the movie with Tim shooting kaylie is supposed to signify that Tim has taken responsibility for pulling the trigger on his father and no longer blames the mirror, it also foreshadows the end of the movie when Tim does actually kill Kaylie, surprised you didn't pick on that
