Pandorum is a bloody masterpiece. So is Event Horizon. Bring those kind of sci-fi horror movies back, and keep the bloody awful "Nun" and "Paranormal Activity" jumpscare movies!
I am pretty sure I read that the "second skin" in the stasis pods are actually layers of dead skin that have accumulated over the years as the pods don't have any way to stop the natural replacement of skin cells. Pretty genious actually.
How did he not get that? It's pretty obvious if you know anything about the human body. It's a really nice idea and shows a lot about the universes technology. It's not perfect, but they were in a hurry to get away. The tech used on the ship isn't this perfect scifi-tech that's almost magic, it has flaws and drawbacks, it breaks etc. The pods can't stop aging indefinitely.
They weren't meant to stay in Cryo long enough for that to be a problem, hence the crew shifts. It's also a subtle nod to the fact that something is VERY wrong if they were left in stasis for that long.
One of the touches I liked about the film was the leaking water every where. Usually in ships it's chalked up to condensation(see Alien) But in this movie it's just straight up water leaking into the hull from the ocean. Much like the algea on the walls it's a very subtle hint to where they are. This movie had so much love put into it.
some people say this is the spiritual sequel to event horizon and i tend to agree. they both have the same tone and deal with similar subjects, plus after the disaster of wormholes leading to hell dimension, humans figured they couldn't use that kind of technology for interstellar travel and conventional engines would have to do, which explains why they use nuclear engines instead. i really liked this movie when it came out and i managed to get myself one of the screen used props which was pretty cool
was one of the spears used by the hunters, if you can call it that. although i do scratch my head on the practical use of that thing. one end looks like an axe/scythe and the other end is a curved blade. looks cool but really unrealistic
you can still find some in the prop store website for the same value i got mine. and they're legit, they only sell the real deal. just don't go crazy with all those impossibly expensive props for sale there lol
I remember seeing this in my local Drive-In. I will admit I was a bit confused by what was going on in it, but I was still fascinated by the design of the spaceship interiors, and it was my first viewing of it, and it takes me multiple viewings to understand a movie like this. So upon watching it a few times on DVD I loved it. This is a movie that requires multiple viewings, but this is what happens when there are moviegoers who don't get it and instantly trash it after the first viewing, rather than giving it another chance. I would honestly have loved to had seen a trilogy out of this, each film different from the other instead of complete rehashes. Part 1 a sci-fi horror set on a spaceship, Part 2 a psychological thriller prequel about Gallo's rise, and Part 3 a sci-fi action-thriller set on Tanis, that'd been interesting. Shame.
he's a top notch actor but never seems to headline any blockbuster movies or win any major awards. sometimes i think his appearances in cult movies and a few B-list movies has cemented him as a "B list actor" in Hollywoods mind despite him having A-list talent. sadly i've even heard him referred to as "a poor mans Harrison Ford"
Some movies just don't need one. The movie ended well with them arriving on the new planet. No need to ruine that ending arbitrarily. Now a prequel I could understand .
Watched this movie on a whim, didn't know a thing about it, and by the credit roll I was just blown away. Underappreciated science fiction masterpiece. I rank it up there with some of the best.
The ejection procedure makes sense when you think about it. If your ship is damaged and about to explode, you may want to give the people in the pods a chance to be rescued by another ship or something. Of course, if humanity is extinct nobody can come rescue you, but that was built into the design of the ship before then. PS: I had no clue this movie was supposed to have sequels. I'm kinda glad it didn't considering the track record of sequels in general. Pandorum is a good standalone movie.
You could argue that its to facilitate being rescued however, Making it in such a way, that they fire in all direction at the same time is kind of counter productive to a rescue effort especially when you consider the limited air supply and zero provisions that should be included with any kind of emergency craft.
Oh I agree on that point, it would've been smarter to have all the pods in a detachable compartment or something to keep them all together instead of scattering them all over the place.
Deusdaecon Reviews it's likely the feature wasn't intended for Space use. The pods seemed durable and resistant to impacts, and as we see, air tight. It's possible it was originally for strictly atmospheric release rather than deep space. Such as if problems arise upon entry of a planet, the escapees have a chance to survive the impact. Or in rare cases, if the ship malfunctions and ends up in an ocean, the pods also help in that regard. However, I have one nitpick. The function is completely flawed without a radio beacon or perhaps other methods of tracking each individual pod so survivors can find eachother. Because each pod just holds ONE person (or two in the movie) and it isn't very likely they'll survive on their own.
@@AmaryInkawult I can believe that the rescue ship would be able to track them easily, either because they emit a signal or because they would show up on scans looking like pieces of wreckage and not, say, asteroid fragments.
Oh, boy! This was one of those accidental films I watched while flipping through channels and man, am I ever glad I did. I thought the film had a few weak points, but the majority of it (most notably the atmosphere) worked so well that ignoring the flaws is easy. This was a great review of a favorite film. And, yes, Norman Reedus is in it for about as long as Robert Duvall was in Sling Blade. :D
I understand your point but I disagree. Even the most furvorish hardcore fans and/or older reviewers I've met give this film some credit too (i.e. we are not over rating anything - it still has its flaws). It belongs in the same line as films such as Kill Command, Spectre, etc - not perfect yes, but with the small budget and bad marketing they had going into it they did a relatively good job.
the evacuation into space kinda makes sense, when you remember that the whole thing is powered by a massive and volatile reactor, the ejection is a failsafe in case of a reactor meltdown
So instead of exploding, people get to slowly suffocate in the void of space ? I don't understand what you mean, if it was something that could save peoples lives in case of emergency then it wouldn't be as big of a deal as we see it is when it gets used wrongly, It shows that if you fire these people into space they will die period no ifs or buts.
10:25 I think it makes sense to be able to eject the pods from a ship. If the ship was damaged beyond repair and on fire or about to blow up you could eject the pods and another ship could come collect them. In Pandorum they’re the last of humanity but if the ships were designed for transporting people regularly it makes sense. Using them as lifeboats
I think Quaid has had the misfortune of being in a lot of great genre films that regardless of their success should have been bigger financial hits. Like Dreamscape, Innerspace and Frequency are all really great and original films or films thst do original films with older ideas that he puts his all in as an actor. Sure some of them may have been successful but I'd love to see a sequel or reboot to Dreamscape, hold Innerspace up to Gremlins in the exceptional works of the MASSIVELY under rated Joe Dante and while I'm excited for the upcoming Frequency show as I said I feel those are massively under rated films from an under rated actor. Also am I the only person who would love to see Quaid play Jay Garrick?
I must admit, this movie is actually pretty good. It airs a lot on Starz Encore. I've watched it 3x already. I'll give it an 7/10. Anyway, great review, man. Thumbs up!
Maybe I'm thinking too deep, but an "all pod ejection button" might be necessary in case of catastrophic failure, or something like total impending ship annihilation. Would make sense to then eject everyone in hopes someone will make it and preserve human life rather than they all sit on a ship and die a fiery death.
I never noticed how much Ben Foster falls down in this excellent film. That ship can’t be safe for human occupation if its passengers keep tumbling through it.
yeah i'm not bothered by the nose bleeds at all. Emotional stress just by itself can cause physical changes observable to others like breaking out in hives or dilated irises.
A lot of reviewers will only focus on reviewing the bad movies but I love that you actually review and recommend movies. Especially so many movies I never would have known about without this channel. Bonus that you also include so many interesting facts I wouldn't have necessarily known about the movie from just watching it once!
When I watched Pandorum I actually was in the midst of a crappy zombiesque binge and I was surprised by how good it was. I didn't even realise there were supposed to be sequels. It did the single film really well. I even rewatched it a couple times.
I'm so sad I didn't watch it before the review... But if I didn't see your review, I wouldn't have the idea to watch it. Now, even knowing the twists, I can still see the movie. Thank you for a great discovery !
man, your reviews are always so informitive i love it. though this time i wish it hadnt been so informative because i wouldnt be sad now that we wont get to see any follow up movies in that universe.
The cryo-pods in this movie bear a great resemblance to the ones in Event Horizon. Now that I think about it, this film has quite a few similarities to Event Horizon, although it's clearly a very different and unrelated story.
Actually it makes a lot of sense Paul W.S Anderson the director of Event Horizon Co-Produced this movie and called it a spiritual successor, it's actually a shame that we never got the R rated original version of Event Horizon he made as the original 35mm. reel was burned and He found a VHS tape of the original and actually saw it and is proud of it still wish we could see the original.
I happened to watch this movie when I woke up at 5 AM on a Christmas break from college. Was groggy and tired and flipping channels and got to this movie and saw Dennis Quaid and thought 'huh this must be something if a big actor like him is in it.' And then I kept watching and loved it. Was too groggy and morning grumpy so none of the scares worked on me which made the movie better for me as I could just focus on everything else. And this film made me LOVE Antje Traue with her character and performance. I was ecstatic when she got the role of Faora in Man of Steel.
I've loved this movie for years. Great review. Only one small thing, I remember listening to the commentary and Norman Reedus popping up was him doing a favor/ just hanging with his friend for a day (the director I think)
I can't see this movie as the first in a trilogy, it is a pretty complete and self contained story, it's not like they would end up on another dark and mysterious ship in the sequel.
Why would the sequels be exactly the same as the first ? like I said in the video the trilogy would've been Pandorum, a prequel before Pandorum and a sequel set on tanis itself, and I personally can see plenty of potential there for horror story lines
Sequel to the Pandorum would be great. Colonist being hunted down by the hunters that managed to survive in that part of the ship that's above the sea level. So many possibilities to scare people (and even add some distraction with the local wildlife: "Nah ... it can't be a hunter, I'm pretty sure it was a "tiger" that rip that gut into the pieces, no need to worry about"). As for prequel I'm not sure if it would work. Earth would be destroyed at the end, so there wouldn't be any mystery about it. Well ... we would know what was the reason, but ... does it matter?
So glad you like this. I was afraid when I clicked on it that you were going to tear it into shreds, given its admittedly large amounts of flaws. It's my favourite movie, mainly because of the themes and the music. A lot of people focus on the plot and scary monsters part and in doing so fail to see what makes the film great.
When a mental illness (or other mental... stuff) causes physical symptoms, the symptoms are psychosomatic. A stress induced headache, for example, is psychosomatic. A bloody nose isn't a large leap in logic, especially if you take into account all the random shit like an artificial atmosphere and being in stasis for so long.
Right on. This was one of the few really good SF/horror combination movies. It's a pity it didn't have more box office success. It's probably fair to say that it has achieved "cult" status since then, so perhaps a sequel would actually be viable.
Did anyone else notice, in the scene where Bower is attempting to bash his way into Payton's sleep pod; when the camera cuts to the inside of the pod, it says "Bower" on it, but written backwards??? 🤔🤔🤔
The fact that there's gravity on the ship doesn't give anything away, it just has artificial gravity. it's either that or the ship is lying perfectly flat on the bottom of the lake or ocean or whatever.
Even before I was super into horror sci-fi styled movies , this movie was one of my favorites when I first saw it in highschool . Would love to see a follow up story for this.
It could be possible to have a laser shaver. There are companies trying to build those things with lightwaves of a spectrum that attacks creatinin (hairs) but not the skin (like there are Lasers that can remove tattoos without damaging too much of the skin layers).
i think i read somewhere that Event Horizon takes place in the same universe and was the 'test' ship to see if they could get to Tanis in a lifetime, but seeing as the blackhole wormhole travel didn't work they were forced to make the Elysium instead that had rotations.
well I’m pretty sure that a fan theory cause if that was in the production history I would’ve found it, also not a fan of that theory anyway because they very different films, Pandorum is at its essence a human story, event horizon is far wider in scope with a different idea behind it
The actor who plays Cpl. Gallo, Cam Gigandit. I can't take that guy seriously. I don't know if I'm the only one but ever since I saw him in the movie "Never Back Down", I can only ever see him as that character.
You say its bad there isn't a sequel but it's probably a good thing because sequels tend to be bad most of the time with movies like this, not saying it's impossible for it to be good but I prefer this movie as a standalone, plus the ending is pretty final, at least i don't see a good story they could use that would have the same atmosphere and psychological horror this movie does well.
The need to have the ability to shoot out all the pods makes sense. If for some reason they needed to self destruct the ship or if the ships life support ect if failing. It at leasts gives the people in the pods a chance to be rescued, especially if they were able to make emergency calls prior to leaving the ship. Its like a cruise ship having life boats.
Hi Deusdaecon (doubt you'll read this, but thought there's no harm trying!!). At 24:12 it states the Year One population of Tanis as being 1,213. Now, maybe I'm misremembering, but I am virtually sure that in one of your Resident Evil videos you stated that the lowest viable population was just over 4,000. Wouldn't this mean therefore than the Tanis project is doomed to failure in fact (not making allowances for advanced technology etc. that could influence this)...? Cheers.
yes indeed thats true, however (I may have neglected this piece of information in the video so sorry for that) but im pretty sure its also stated there are fertilised human embryos stored in the ship too.
I only learned about this movie from a recommendation from a co-worker a good few years ago. I enjoyed it, especially the first third and I didn't see the twist coming. It's a solid film with a likeable cast and I'm prepared to overlook the fact that it's a bit pulpy at times and that this idea is a very old one (Brian Aldiss' 'Non-Stop' is one of the best known versions).
If the ship is going down and theres no hope in fixing it then you jettison all the freezer pop people in a vague hope that they might just get rescued somehow instead of for sure going down with the ship.
I really do like these episodes. One of my favorite reviewers I feel like you would the master of horror movies as a good review format as some are good and some suck af.
This movie was criminally underrated. I would have loved Pandorum to be the first in a trilogy. I wanted to know what happened after the end of the movie!
What is the music that plays in the very beginning, just as the Pandorum cover is shown? It sounds so awesome! i'd love it if anyone can let me know. Thanks in advance!
I could see the sequel of this being good. Humanity is on the edge but comes the challenges of repopulating but also the hidden dangers on this new world.
I'm a reluctant fan of the walking dead, I watch the episode but find it both exhausting and exasperating that its just become an exercise in human misery. and yes I am aware of the COC game.
This is honestly such a good movie, fantastic even, sure it’s strange but it’s excellent in every way, such a shame clueless audiences killed any chances of a follow-up.
I have to give this movie credit that, despite it planning a trilogy that never happened, at least it didn't end on a cliffhanger, it can still be enjoyed as a standalone film. Cliffhangers are one of the worst, if not _the_ worst way you could end a film. Sure, it was affective with films like Halloween, but so many films, especially horror films, have done it so many times since then that it doesn't work anymore, it's not scary or causes demand, it's just frustrating. Even Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, which by the way was supposed to be the finale, ended on a cliffhanger (at least I _think_ it's supposed to be a cliffhanger, for all I know, it could be "the bad ending" where the world is fucked). At least Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ended with the implication that things are going to get better.
Pandorum is a bloody masterpiece. So is Event Horizon. Bring those kind of sci-fi horror movies back, and keep the bloody awful "Nun" and "Paranormal Activity" jumpscare movies!
Yes!!!!!
I am pretty sure I read that the "second skin" in the stasis pods are actually layers of dead skin that have accumulated over the years as the pods don't have any way to stop the natural replacement of skin cells. Pretty genious actually.
Also kinda horrifying, considering that could lead to people becoming entombed in their own skin if it isn't peeled off regularly.
If theyre there for hundreds of years that would create alot ALOT more skin than just a second layer.
In a stasis pod there shouldn't be any dead skin. Since, people would die in the stasis.
At least the film ended without a cliffhanger. Self-contained despite no sequels ever happening.

what prop was it if i may ask ?
was one of the spears used by the hunters, if you can call it that. although i do scratch my head on the practical use of that thing. one end looks like an axe/scythe and the other end is a curved blade. looks cool but really unrealistic
ah right very nice, if i could choose which prop to own that would definitely be one of my choices
you can still find some in the prop store website for the same value i got mine. and they're legit, they only sell the real deal. just don't go crazy with all those impossibly expensive props for sale there lol
could be except no shodan

One of the best reviews yet! Good job
Thank you very much I really appreciate that.

If I was in that situation and a adolescent mutated alien human child showed up I wouldnt even have to think , it would be a reflex killing.
This movie was so underrated. I wish I would have seen it at the theater. Didn't see it until it was released on Bluray.
Ben foster is a killer actor. Always enjoy his work.
pretty sure the water in the ship throughout the movie dripping was also a sign they were underwater
I wish I would have heard about this film back then. Because it looks right up my alley. Great review as always.
Ben Fosters Rules!

A bloody nose isn't a large leap in logic, especially if you take into account all the random shit like an artificial atmosphere and being in stasis for so long.
That bit with the razor commercial was great. LMAO!
12:33 I think mental disorders DO sometimes have physical symptoms. Not on that level, though, but yeah.
Right on. This was one of the few really good SF/horror combination movies. It's a pity it didn't have more box office success. It's probably fair to say that it has achieved "cult" status since then, so perhaps a sequel would actually be viable.
Antje Traue, who played Nadia, would later play Faora in Man of Steel.
Did anyone else notice, in the scene where Bower is attempting to bash his way into Payton's sleep pod; when the camera cuts to the inside of the pod, it says "Bower" on it, but written backwards??? 🤔🤔🤔
I love the technology style in this movie.
The fact that there's gravity on the ship doesn't give anything away, it just has artificial gravity. it's either that or the ship is lying perfectly flat on the bottom of the lake or ocean or whatever.
How can it have artificial gravity when the energy supply is fucked up?
Thats what he had noticed
I remember this movie being on while I was home alone and I ended up enjoying the experience so shame it wasn't better received
Even before I was super into horror sci-fi styled movies , this movie was one of my favorites when I first saw it in highschool . Would love to see a follow up story for this.
I loved this movie. I didn't know it was planned as a trilogy and honestly I'm glad it was a stand-alone, I think it was more effective that way.
It could be possible to have a laser shaver. There are companies trying to build those things with lightwaves of a spectrum that attacks creatinin (hairs) but not the skin (like there are Lasers that can remove tattoos without damaging too much of the skin layers).
i think i read somewhere that Event Horizon takes place in the same universe and was the 'test' ship to see if they could get to Tanis in a lifetime, but seeing as the blackhole wormhole travel didn't work they were forced to make the Elysium instead that had rotations.
well I’m pretty sure that a fan theory cause if that was in the production history I would’ve found it, also not a fan of that theory anyway because they very different films, Pandorum is at its essence a human story, event horizon is far wider in scope with a different idea behind it
How to detect a good reviewer. They talk about a film they like and it's as interesting and in depth as one they hate. Do really enjoy your work.
Thank you very much
Man I love your intro song. :( sucks that I can’t use the links. Would buy it.
Underappreciated gem
The actor who plays Cpl. Gallo, Cam Gigandit. I can't take that guy seriously. I don't know if I'm the only one but ever since I saw him in the movie "Never Back Down", I can only ever see him as that character.
Saw this long ago and almost forgot it! Hidden gem
One of my favorite sci-fi movies. If I recall, back in 2009 when this movie came out, it was hit pretty hard critics.
This makes me want to watch it again
You say its bad there isn't a sequel but it's probably a good thing because sequels tend to be bad most of the time with movies like this, not saying it's impossible for it to be good but I prefer this movie as a standalone, plus the ending is pretty final, at least i don't see a good story they could use that would have the same atmosphere and psychological horror this movie does well.
God, I wish for the whole trilogy too.
I LOVE this movie personally.
you should do a review on deep rising
Every time he says “cook” I hear “cuck”.
The need to have the ability to shoot out all the pods makes sense. If for some reason they needed to self destruct the ship or if the ships life support ect if failing. It at leasts gives the people in the pods a chance to be rescued, especially if they were able to make emergency calls prior to leaving the ship. Its like a cruise ship having life boats.
yeah except the pods aren't life supported, we even saw at the end of the film they're not even water tight
@@deusdeaconReviews Oh great - thanks for the response! And good luck with your degree btw!
What if something attacks the ship? Then not enough spacepods. Unless you have a oh f*** let's leave" button
If the ship is going down and theres no hope in fixing it then you jettison all the freezer pop people in a vague hope that they might just get rescued somehow instead of for sure going down with the ship.
Those pods aren't life supported, we see at the end they're not even water tight.
I find myself thinking of it a lot. It was underrated.
Never heard of this movie ever. This looks incredible.
This is one of the most underrated films I’ve seen
I really do like these episodes. One of my favorite reviewers
I feel like you would the master of horror movies as a good review format as some are good and some suck af.
Pandorum is my favorite, Loved it
This movie was criminally underrated. I would have loved Pandorum to be the first in a trilogy. I wanted to know what happened after the end of the movie!
Do one on It comes at night
Anyone remember Norman R in 8MM?
What is the music that plays in the very beginning, just as the Pandorum cover is shown?
It sounds so awesome!
i'd love it if anyone can let me know.
Thanks in advance!
Nevermind, i found it.
it's called "Kanyrna", from the Pandorum OST.
Hope this helps anyone else. :)
I wish this had become a trilogy. It would have been amazing
What I'd have given to be a fly on the wall during the development of this movie...
Such an underrated sci-fi film.
this film looks amazing, gonna watch it with some friends
Fantastic review of an under rated movie
Yooo I remember seeing this movie a while ago, but could never remember the name, man I really wish there was at least 1 sequel now
I like the new intro title
It's actually skin. His dead skin never fell off as it normally does as we move through our daily routines.
i put a link for your cube review in the discription of my last review (it was also cube)
Thank you, I appreciate that.
Deusdaecon Reviews
you are welcome
Love this film
Great review , awesome channel, not so much on the theme song. (The lyrics are laughably redundant )
But I do love the content.
Jone Holre it’s by a German metal band
English isn’t their first language
i was really upset this dident become the space opera it should have been i watched this film 3 time loved it and i loved the cast
I could see the sequel of this being good. Humanity is on the edge but comes the challenges of repopulating but also the hidden dangers on this new world.
A few questions. Are you a walking dead fan? And did you hear about the Call of Cthulhu game reboot? btw awesome review man.
I'm a reluctant fan of the walking dead, I watch the episode but find it both exhausting and exasperating that its just become an exercise in human misery. and yes I am aware of the COC game.
+Deusdaecon Reviews my tough for final destination I find the fifth one to be the best thanks to the ending
This is one of my top 10 movies.unique and interesting world. The tech wasnt magic cgi
Thanks for reminding me that I need to shave.
this reminds me of “the descent”
