  • NEW Psoas Release (psoas self massage / trigger point work with the body back buddy tool)
The psoas plays a major role in chronic low back pain (LBP) as well as hip pain / dysfunction (such as in FAI hip impingement cases.)
Gently releasing it with consistent work (over time) can feel miraculously freeing for some people.
Check out this video for the technique and also watch all the way to the end for a few words of warning.
ATTENTION: before beginning any direct psoas massage heed these guidelines:
    1. The pain should be tolerable, like a 3-4/10 and ZERO "weird / sketchy / dangerous" sensations or feedback from your body (I cover this in the video.)
    2. Proceed with caution. Don't just let anyone stick their fingers or foot or implement into your guts unless they are a trained professional AND they listen to YOUR feedback and discomfort tolerances.
In the extremely rare scenario that you feel sick, throw up or have diarrhea after treatment, get to the hospital ASAP!
The therapist who works on me has never had this happen in 30 years and I have never had it happen, but the key is to LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND NEVER PUSH IT WHEN YOU'RE BODY GIVES YOU WARNING SIGNALS.
OK, now that you may be sufficiently scared...lets get into what can be one of the most effective means for relaxing your low back and restoring hip function / range of motion! Psoas trigger point massage!
Try out this new tool in addition to the previous methods I've shown and find which one works best for you!
    Enjoy!

@@GotROM Started having mysterious low back, hip, and leg pain about 5 years ago, gets better and worse, finally had my back completely go out for the better part of a week in February - couldn't move without great difficulty for 2-3 days of that, couldn't go to work, etc. Since I work in a physical medicine practice, figured out with my massage therapists/PT techs that there's definitely a psoas component, maybe the major underlying cause. I've spent 5 years trying to figure out what's causing this and how to fix it, so having that information is awesome, but it's difficult when activities other than gentle stretching are just as likely to set off a flare as help. In fact, I think it was just some gentle exercise the day prior that may have set off the most recent flare. Needless to say, I've lost a lot of strength and conditioning in the past 5 years, mostly for fear of doing too much. Walking is always good. Elliptical has never bothered it. Even yoga sometimes sets it off, although I've never figured out which of the (beginner to intermediate) exercises are doing it. I'm reading up on all things psoas and trying to formulate a simple program I can stick to without fear of causing a flare. I've also been working on very tight quads, which seem to be part of the problem, and I only recently realized they were so tight. If you know of a program, let me know!

Thank you. I have only just heard about the Psoas muscle and the problems it causes as well as the benefits of its release. I have been trying but this really got in there. So, despite it hurting like hell, thanks very much for this vid :)

Your notes on the bottom says, "In the extremely rare scenario that you feel sick, throw up or have diarrhea after treatment, get to the hospital ASAP." What does it mean if you have those symptoms? Im curious since its so urgent that you have to go to the hospital ASAP.

I've never actually heard of it happening in real life...but in the hypothetical situation that you somehow damage some of your intestines, you might feel really bad. But you'd have to be really putting a lot of pressure/intensity into this in a very UN-mindful way...

Great video. Thank you very much. I'll be going Monday for a trigger point massage but want to work on this at home. Not to sound inappropriate, (I'm embarrassed enough even asking), will this help release the sort of high tension feeling in my groin? I sit a lot for work and am afraid to jog because sometimes it hurts. I know of the, "good sport", method and seems as if I push it, I can hurt myself. I'd rather explore any method that will work rather than being medicated. Most doctors would rather send you off with pills it seems. Thanks in advance!

Hard to say, but the psoas does attach to the spine so it will influence it.

I'm a subscriber faifix program and you have a video to release the iliacus with a kettle bell, can you specify what weight apollo kettle bell you use in that video? I have a 32lb apollo kettlebell which I use for adductor release but it's too large for the iliacus and raise my hips too high. What weight would you recommend for iliacus release work?

    • @GotROM
      @GotROM  7 років тому

The 8kg kettlebell has a smaller diameter handle which can fit inside the pelvic rim easier.
