Dave is so. Fucking. Solid! Seriously, what a privilege to watch him track. Professional, precise, and locks in perfectly with the drums. Thanks for this footage, and great job producing dude
I can’t state enough how important the instrument itself is for a killer metal bass tone. And that Modulus really kicked ass! I still gotta find out „what makes a bass sound metal“. Guess that’s for another video…🤩
I think it's not only an amazing "lesson by practice" for producers to see how to make an instrument fit in a mix, because it's litteraly a recording of the session it's also a useful tool for musicians to know what to tell the producer about their vision without wasting everyone's time, truely a course everyone should follow ! I'll buy it when i'll have more money but among online metal mixing courses, this one looks like the most useful not only for producers but also for performers !
Ellefson plays very clean and supertight. I have great experiences from recording a bass with a graphite neck in terms of clarity and bite. The sound is menacing good. Calls for a cold beer.
@@KohleAudioKult it could be that a graphite neck has all fibers in the same pattern vs a wood neck. It sounds more even, no dead spots and no surprises? If you would track both basses side by side; as an engineer you might hear and define the difference in the studio while fans live often would not.
Thanks. I think that’s the unique part of this course. It’s the real thing. The actual session. Kudos to Dave for doing this. Most musicians wouldn’t have done this with me.
Dave is one of my influences and I've always loved the articulation of using a pick on bass. I just wish I could get a break in the business. Great video as always. Would love to record with you. Best wishes and much love.
I was just thinking about Dave's Modulus the other day and wishing I'd see him bust it out again- thing sounds nasty. But then again, everything Dave does sounds killer
I really liked that producing part of this. I'm not a pro or anything but I really love working with good musicians who respect my ideas to probably make their art more potent what comes to arrangement. Unfortunately some amazing guys I've worked with have gotten record deals and are working with "real pros" now so my little home studio is just collecting dust. :D
Those are the hardest parts to capture in a course. I mean the producing. That's why we filmed the real thing. Many musicians don't want this. Dave was really cool though!
@@KohleAudioKult That's understandable as musicians might be perfectionists (like me) so telling them there might be a way to make their "perfect" arrangement even better can hurt the master minds feelings. :D Luckily those guys I've worked with have either played in a same band with me (where I was the "master mind" as a song writer) or others have just recognized my views and knowledge what comes to production.
@SecretMetalFromAbyss That’s exactly the situation! 😇 The real, mature mastermind knows that it makes sense to listen to a good producer and to question yourself though.
I remember watching a video and I cant remember who did the video but they said dont palm mute your bass, cut to Dave palm muting! His verse riff in symphony of destruction is palm muted. Don't mess with a legend lol. Great video man!
It always drove me nuts cause the best bass tone to me would be after maybe a few days of playing. Like when you get a bad haircut and it grows out just a little and looks good for about a day
Even if we didn’t end up using it, that Bugera Superbass clone is badass! I haven’t found a single flaw. Sad but true. You can find another video about it in the Bass playlist on this channel.
Well. His set has a 128 B-string, but he tuned up to C to have it tighter. What about using a 135 B-String? I know there are trade offs. For instance if you would use a 140 or even thicker, than the tone becomes surprisingly duller, because it lost flexibility and therefore the ability to produce higher clear overtones. just for interest: If you use 200 or 210 for low F# than even the overtones are not harmonic anymore because the string becomes so thick that it cannot be treated a a one dimensional string but a three dimensional object. Overtons are reflected inside the string so that they run a longer way inside the string compared to the foundation tones. I can recommend Pyramide. They produce all kind of strings exactly to your specs. And they are not expensive. They also made my 8-string low B tuning string set accordig to my specs.
@@robloyst4514 105 tuned to B? On my other bass I use "Peter Steel memorial strings" (DR black, 110, 90 ..) and tuned to B. And surprisingly that works.

Dave's just a cool normal motherfucker seems like. Keep up the metal Dave. One thing, does he tune all the strings up half step or just the B string to go with drop C guitars?
@@KohleAudioKult you are right. I was just curious. Seemed like a weird thing to me. So the guitars are tuned up too? Or am I just not getting this? Lol. Sorry for my ignorance. I play guitar in drop C. So the bass is C, F, B flat, E flat, A flat?
@@Gee-no In the video he seems to be saying he tunes to C - E - A - D -G, but that makes no sense. So what I think he ~meant~ is that when he's accompanying a guitarist who is tuned to Drop C, instead of tuning his bass strings down to A - C - G - C - F like you normally would, he tunes them up to C - G - C - F - A and plays the riffs a string lower (higher? closer to his head than his feet, anyway 😄)

Everyone does it indeed, I guess it's just funny when someone famous does it and gets caught. Regardless of what everyone thinks or does, I am just here loving this new band, megaDieth 😂😂
@@JohnWiku the sad thing is he wasn't "caught" as much as his conversation and video chat with someone got put out in public intentionally. If anything the guy's a victim. I've never been a Megadeth fan nor do I really even care about Ellefson, but it's honestly just common sense so I don't know why everyone is acting they way they are about it.
I like the idea of running the signal through a guitar amp as well and adding in a little bit of that sizzle for some extra cut. But the main takeaway here for me truly is: the instrument itself is set up really well and has a good solid and snappy sound to it. You put that in the hands of a player with good technique and then the rest of the recording gear is secondary, you can basically get away with almost anything you want.
