  • Was not expecting to need to make a video like this quite so soon - had quite the experience trying to charge my 2020 MG ZS EV at the new MFG EV Power 150kW chargers at M6 J27 (Crow Orchard).
Thankfully managed to get going again by disconnecting and reconnecting the 12v battery. Would strongly recommend carrying a 10mm spanner in case this happens to you!

This kind of need for intervention is deliberately built in to maintain the spirit of the MG brand.
It's character building. Requires the stiff upper lip and resourcefulness which were once indisputably requisite traits of the British man.
There's nothing more British than a minor breakdown on a six month old car, flying by the seat of your pants.
    BUY BRITISH, FLY THE FLAG.

Please, please ignore the Fanboys and continue giving honest, balanced reports on your experiences. This is what is of real value to prospective buyers. No point trying to cater for blinkered, brand-worshipping zealots, since their minds are already made up and nothing you say or do will make.any difference to them.

It works!!! Many thanks for sharing... I got the MG today, after driving a bit I decided to try the public charging nearby (Europe - Luxembourg). I connected for about 15 min on a slow charge, then I realized that just a few meters away there was a fast charger, so I unplugged from the slower one, moved to the fast charger, connected, and after 2 min the charging stopped. I pressed the start button and got the System Fault HV Battery... I did not panic... I googled and found this video, called the missus and she came to the rescue with the 10mm spanner... unplugged the (-) of the 12v battery for about 5min, reconnected and SURPRISE....System Ready!! Many thanks for sharing and shame to MG for not having fixed this in a new car delivered in August 2023.

This is really interesting. Since recently changing (and obviously disconnecting) the 12v battery in my four year old Kia Soul, the car's running a whole lot better. I reckon your real-life real-world videos are a breath of fresh air in the UA-cam EVsphere. Can't thank you enough. An appropriate spanner is now safely tucked up in the glove compartment, and I can't thank you enough for that as well!

The 10mm spanner trick is not just an EV thing. A few years ago, the wife's Aygo suddenly died about a mile from the house & one of the engine fault lights came on (can't remember which one). Engine point blank refuses to restart! AA called, guy arrives, has a look & without a moment's hesitation, disconnects the battery, waits a couple of minutes then reconnects it. Gets inside, turns the ignition key & the engine fires first time. Tells us to ask the garage to clear the fault next time we take it in for a service & off he tootles. Nothing quite beats the 'turn it off & turn it on again' strategy for solving most electrical problems...

Great videos and keep them coming!
I am SO glad I saw this one in particular. I bought an MG5 in April and have been totally happy with it. I live in Edinburgh and our first long distance trip was to visit my daughter in Birmingham. This subjected my wife and me to the joys of public charging when going long distance! Our first stop in Tebay was at a Polar/BP Pulse rapid charger which started up and charged the car just fine. Unfortunately when I stopped the charge, had a problem disconnecting the cable and the cars system got screwed. Your 10mm spanner solution saved the day for us! A big thanks for that one!
I did subsequently find that in the audio system settings there is the ability to do a factory reset which may have achieved the same thing as disconnecting the 12V battery. Haven't been able to verify this ast I haven't had any other charging problems that needed to do this.
Thanks again for the videos - keep up the good work!

I recently had a similar issue. Plugged into a charger, had to call a number to start the charge, it wouldn't start, the operator said there was an error on the machine and to go to a different one, I unplugged and went to drive off but my car wouldn't move. The car (MG ZS) wouldn't even turn off or let me lock the car, it was just sort of frozen. 12v battery showed slightly lower than it had been showing so a guy tried to jump-start the 12v battery, nothing. I ended up calling the breakdown company. 20 minutes later the car randomly started working again so I cancelled the breakdown and carried on with my journey, it was the weirdest thing. While I was waiting someone else used the charger using an RFID card and it worked absolutely fine for them.

A bit off topic. But my clutch went at the seaside once, so (thinking it was the master cylinder) called the RAC out! The lady on the other end said someone would be out within an hour, so we went to lunch! 2 hours later a patrolman turned up, the RAC thinking it was probably a flat battery, so didn't initially call for recovery! After a bit he said he wouldn't be able to help so called for recovery. This took another 4 hours to turn up and we made it back home at 10pm!
So take that spanner and frame it mate! It saved you an awful lot of time and stress!
Keep going with the updates on the ZS EV! It's probably the best option (2nd hand) that a lot of us have, in affordability!

I once had my exhaust disconnect at the front. 11pm at night. This was in the days before mobiles. Had to walk for an hour to reach a garage to call the RAC. Told them exactly the same. Reinforced the point I needed a flatbed, unless they planned to reverse it all the way home. 1 hour walk back to car. Further hour for bloke to come out in a van. Took one look and said "you need a flatbed 🤦‍♂️
Further 2 hours for flatbed to arrive. Got home at 6am the following morning. Aah, the 80s! 😁

I frequently use eVolt (Swarco) rapids (Chargeplace Scotland). If I ever have a problem, it is eVolt rapids that refuse to work and need reset. Never had a problem with any other rapid. Haven't had the problem with the battery you have had either even with eVolt. eVolt also takes WAY longer to start charging once connected than ANY other brand of charger I use.

Have had it fail to connect a few times, but only once has it caused any issues (couldn't unplug the car, had to lift the bonnet and use the manual release).
My old diesel car had a full toolkit in the back. Since I've got the ZS, I've chucked in some spanners, a mini socket set, some gaffa tape, and a selection of screwdrivers. Anything more involved that can't be fixed with those would probably require a recovery truck anyway.

I had exactly the same issue at a Swarco rapid in my MG5 and had to disconnect the 12v to reset the car. This from experience happens sometimes, over 8 years driving and riding ev, it is usually the car not the rapid (can be a combination of both though and this time it was definitely the rapid) and have had this happen in both my previous Nissan Leafs and my MG ZS. Always carry a small tool kit or multi tool, duct tape, bungees, fold up shovel, snow socks (can help you get out of muddy fields too), jump leads, tow rope................... 🙃

The emergency release cable wouldn’t work so I had to force the flap open breaking the catch (the duct tape came in handy) and had to fix a slow puncture in a rear tyre 😳. The rest of the week including 120 miles driving in Cornwall went with no issues with Genie rapids, Pod-Point (free) Tesco charging and free 7kw Genie at the Truro park and ride car park so all good.

As a forma petrol station owner, I can tell you infrastructure costs for charger sites are much less than that of a petrol stations. There is a fair charging price premium for charging away from home. I would say many sites are price gouging. Why is it so complicated to charge a car. At home you plug the car in and that`s it. Messing about with apps is a joke, imagine doing that every time you went to fill with petrol/diesel or going to buy a pint of milk, there would be a riot of protests.

    • @ModernHeroes
      @ModernHeroes  3 роки тому

Setup costs will obviously be higher for an entire petrol station however it'll also have potential for a far greater throughput. Agree with you on the complication of apps etc, thankfully most networks now seem to be embracing contactless payment which is exactly how it should be.

Good on you Mate for tell all of us how it is, I'm on the fence about buying one of these vehicles mainly as we are in April now and the dealer wants to fob off a 2020 built ZS EV at the full retail price. My complaint is the depreciation on this 2020 manufactured vehicle when I drive it off the dealer lot and the dealer said they have tight margins so no discount, so I will wait a few months for the 2021 manufactured stock to arrive or might leave it all together until 2022 when the ZS EV will get an update. It's a pity at the stage we will not be getting the Marvel R in Australia, this would be a better buy I think. Every other dealer is having a 2020 plate clearance to move their 2020 produced stock, I think MG dealers here are going to have a lot of 2020 stock sitting on their lots that they own, gathering dust if they don't discount these vehicles into 2021. It roughly takes 6 weeks for vehicles to come from China to Australia and one dealer has a 2021 produced model already in their dealership just not a ZS EV. Thanks for keeping us all informed and keep up the great UA-cam chanel.

  • @benpaynter

I totally agree with you on the charging costs. I think EV owners, particularly those of us that have been driving EV's for some time now got spoilt at the start with the likes of the Electric Highway being free. But rapid chargers and associated infrastructure does not come cheap and needs to be paid for. It's still much cheaper than petrol on all but the Ionity chargers. As for the old Zoe's, I think it's unreasonable to expect new chargers going forward to cater for one specific old model it's a lot of money for not many cars, lots of which will be reaching the end of their useful lives soon.

You have probably heard of a guy called Tesla Bjorn from Norway. When he tested the e208 which is identical underneath to mine, his car did a similar thing a couple of times. My MG ZS EV died this morning at an Osprey 50Kw charger today, plugged in as we normally as were getting low to initiate charge but wouldnt charge. In the end unplugged to try the charger bay next to this one but car would not move and gave error 'Vehicle Control Systems Fault. Please stop safely' another MG owner turned up while waiting for the AA with an older model mine is 3 months old 22 plate. Tried disconnecting the battery leaving it for 10mins etc and putting back on but the error remained. AA came out and tried the same and the car wouldn't even communicate with their tester boxes to get the error codes. In the end the car had to be towed to nearest MG dealer and just a few minutes before they arrived a host of errors appeared on screen, even airbag faults, vacuum fault everything the car was trying to check for and the cars power died completely. we were able to get the power back briefly unplugging the 12v and then back on again to put the windows up and remove the parking break while they pushed the car out ready to be on the truck but then the power died again. Tow truck operator put the battery boost on the 12v and suddenly all the systems came back online apart from the main HV so maybe this was a crappy new 12v battery causing all these issues? wont know until its fixed in the next few days but considering this is a brand new car and has already broken down and bricked not good.

I'm about to own this model of EV. But from my ancient wisdom of circuitry, it sounds like a pin fault on the charger side connector. Possibly the sense pin is saying "I'm connected, safe to send electrons", but one of the other pins on the male plug is slighted damaged, so isn't providing adequate conductance, forcing a trip situation, completely taking the HV breakers out of circuit.
From the amount of times I've read about this happening on the Facebook MG ZS EV group, it sounds like a built in safety feature, but perhaps a reset button for the breakers would have been more appropriate.

Only major error messages I've had on my Leaf stemmed from a low 12v battery. Drove through a kerb deep puddle one evening and some water obviously got somewhere it shouldn't and earthed the 12v system somewhere. I'm sure somone else have given this answer but anyway my two cents:
    1. I would have used the spanner, it is the fast way to reset the car I tell you why I know later on.
    2. If one locks the car and go so far away that the keyfob does not communicate with the car while in your pocket (20m should do it), wait 10 minutts and then try to go back and restart the car. This normaly works because the system automaticly resets itself on MGs when the keyfob is out of reach for some time.
How I learned this you say? Because a MG Marvel R desided to die on me while waiting to get infront of a fast charger and I was fidling about whit the settings to get the 360 camera on. It suddenly desided the car was plugged in the charger while not beeing so (crasy, the dealer was not beliving their own eyes).
I did want to reset it with taking of the 12v minus pole (always take ground if first of a dc battery, but remember some cars have positive ground so be aware). But did not have tools to do so, anyway I got the dealer to come and drive me to my car anyway so rest of the story I got some days later.
When the towing company came to collect the car, it fired straight up (keyfob was left behind in the nearby petrol station). That's how the dealer and I learned at bit more abaut MG evs.😁

Wonders how much it would cost to have a breaker switch wired into the 12v line.. Maybe manufactures should do it as standard, i remember the days of Fords having a "bump" switch fitted to the fuel pump. hit a speed bump too hard.. 50 yrds later you grind to a halt without a clue as to why

"Why is public charging so difficult?" - I thought Instavolt had the answer, with reliable contactless-payment chargers and always installed in multiples, but even they aren't 100%, as I found recently in Birmingham when one ignored my payment card and the other actually said it had a fault. Anyway, will check the battery terminals on my LEAF and get a suitable spanner shortly - thanks for the tip!

Might be worth ordering a ChargePoint RFID card if you’re a regular Instavolt user - yes it’s another account to maintain but it’s a good backup + you can check on charging progress in their app. First card is free and it doesn’t take any payment from you until you use it to start a charge.

Calling the AA before you try a hard reset of your vehicle to remove error messages. Is almost as bad as calling the AA to replace a defective tyre, because you don't know or can't be bothered to change it. It's simple good practice. And something everyone should know how to do before they even set foot behind the wheel of a vehicle...

    • @ModernHeroes
      @ModernHeroes  3 роки тому

Are you for real? 😂 “trying a hard reset of your vehicle” isn’t something that anyone driving an ICE car would ever have remotely contemplated (nor would it make any difference most of the time - engine fault codes are persistent and disconnecting the 12v battery doesn’t clear them) yet you’re suggesting it’s an obvious practise that every driver should already be aware of? 😳

The real problem here is the handshake protocol of the CCS charging system, there seems to be a loose definition in some areas. The MG and the Jaguar iPace both seem to have had problems. Mine has 'crapped out' when going from full charge to 16kW at 80% or so. Polars give a 'Translation Error' which requires a reset from BPC. And Osprey has been flaky at times. I don't like your clickbait titles and thumbnails but your content has improved...I, like you will be critical.

I had to resort to this after the car refused to charge on any charger. It then flattened the 12v battery as it was pulling a 5amp load even when the car was switched off.So disconnected the 12v and charged it separately and got it back to the dealer. The problem was moisture getting into a connection on the HV side. They cleaned the contacts and applied a water repellent jelly round it.I'm not sure if you might have a similar problem as my problem started with it becoming more difficult to charge and cutting off chargers.I think the car is great but moisture getting into some plugs might be a potential problem further down the line.

On the fifth of April I purchased my first ever Ev a 2015 Nissan Leaf what I have owned nearly 1 month ..
I am very much learning with my car .
I always charge at Public chargers at the moment due to lockdown I cannot get an installer out to my home to do a assessment of my requirements & to price up .
Overall my experience this month as a newbie has been interesting but not confidence destroying .
I have had one charger start charging then stop even tho I confirmed charging on the app.
I have also had the same charger ( it has two sockets) when confirm charging on the app then show out of order .
Then just a few days ago had another charger where the light did not work but on the dash show charging but on my dashboard lights ( MK1 Nissan Leaf’s have charging blue lights that you can see what the car is doing from outside ) no blue lights showing , However switching from charger socket B to A and confirm with A got it working .
I have not got any experience of the UK charger network because I live on the Isle of Man 🇮🇲

I thought it was only us who had a Kangoo and an MGZSEV...
Imho... The issue is the charger in this case.
I had big issues with a VERY popular home charger. It put my Kangoo into RED nose Death mode on many occasions. In the end I got a refund on the charger. Ohme now installed and all perfect since the then.
I could post a scary video where the charger locked the cable to the Van, an 3 day old I Pace and a Zoe... They switched the whole complex down.. 3 hours later the maintenance person was on site .. it's 1am by now... Normally I love an angle grinder... But the choice was our type2 untethered cables or the brand new charger units.... They chose the latter!
Basically all cars can fail. This is not limited to the MG. Having lived with a lot of Land Rovers.... Doing a hard reset was a weekly routine.
I think people do get a bit too precious about their vehicles.. none are perfect. EVs are still quite new really. Many folk almost try to goad you about EV ownership.. usually out of ignorance it must be said.
Good tip on the 10mm spanner. I will stick one on the glovebox today.
If you drive a Land Rover many of us stick a GAP iid tool in the car... £400 for that so a spanner at a £1 is a bargain 👍
Good real world post.. it's just the joys of motoring.. nothing changes really... 30 years ago it was all about your rotor arm or points gap or dizzy cracks... Now it's about Ecu hard resets... We live and learn
      Thanks for sharing👍

Sounds like we’re about to go back to the good old days when going for a long distance ride was kind of an adventure. Seems we’re both enjoying some kind of having a technology affinity and are not easily scared off by fickle electronics. My Zoe seems to have got jealous over me riding my Volvo for a couple of weeks and upon retrieving her, she gave me this angry ELEC system fault error flashing at me which is related to the 12V system but could mean anything from one-time hiccup to faulty DC DC converter. After the first mild rush of panic and having searched “the network “, I did just what you did and unplugged the 12V - that remedied the error. So yes, I reckon that faint-hearted drivers would have to call the assistance and end up with having a really bad day and probably losing faith in EV mobility. This must not happen. I demand car makers to harden their electronics to withstand any error condition introduced from the outside, like a faulty charger. And if the vehicle needs human assistance to recover from an error, clear instructions must be given that hopefully do not need to have a wrench available. 🤗 speaking of faulty charges, I really envy you CCS guys. Those DC cables are fixated the pump unlike most Type2 charging options. Imagine winter, centigrades way below zero, around midnight, just got off the Autobahn and looking tho recharge the drained battery at an AC pump just eight kilometers from home, close but not close enough. Plugging in my very own cable, charging, nodding off to sleep, waking up, dash is dark. Ok, Zoe is done charging, more than needed. Also got damn cold inside the car, so let’s go home. Unfortunately, the pump did not release my cable. I had to phone them up to rush on over to release the cable. That took another one and a half hour and the lack of sleep gave me that unique zombie look at work. Is owning an EV an adventure? I’m afraid it still is.

@@ModernHeroes I quite understand why you did not report the problem to MFG EV Power, it is so annoying waiting on a phone just to help out, particularly when you have been stressed out by the charger and in a hurry. But unfortunately if the problems are not reported they will never get fixed even though the operator, I would assume, can see the error on a log in their office. Maybe the protocols should pass the car type during the handshake so the operator can remotely see which make/model of vehicle is having a handshake issue.
