  • Pricing cakes can be somewhat calculated, but when it comes down to it, it has to be based so much more on just ingredients and time.

    This shouldn't actually be controversial in my opinion! You stated the explanation of pricing in a super clear and reasonable manner. Also if it's based largely on time, cakes made by less skilled bakers would be MORE expensive, and skilled bakers would be paid LESS for the hours and hours of prior practice put in! Agree with the idea that people can just choose to buy a cake somewhere else - there's a wide market of products and prices to choose from.

    Excellent video Ashley. As a long-time Decorator, I have watched what's trending come and go, and come again. Prices will always vary by popularity, skill and materials. A cake artist must be creative, flexible and current to sustain business. Prices are earned by the Decorator, and therefore must be just as creative, flexible and current.

    I understand Ashleigh, it's like going to my local bakery and I order a cake, verses getting the same cake from Duff Goldman, it is not going to be the same price.... I have seen every video that you have made, and your cakes are on Duffs level... You're awesome...💜💜💜💜💜

    I'm so glad you talked about they were priced because of skill not time (or like you said it's a little about time but mostly about skill). I'm a professional photographer and the same is true regarding our pricing. I am so much faster at editing than I used to be so I shouldn't be penalized because I'm faster. Also when I'm photographing someone, I can get great images faster than when I first started or faster than other photographers, that is skill and experience. I shouldn't be penalized because an increase in skills meant a decrease in time.

    The Lamborghini and Honda analogy was really good and made a lot of sense. I also like that you pointed out that price gouging does not exist in the cake industry because nobody is forced to buy your cake and it's a luxury. I am so sick of people whining, saying that custom cakes posted on UA-cam are priced too high and that the prices are sooo ridiculous. I just roll my eyes at that and think that they don't know what they are talking about and they can just buy cakes from somewhere else that aren't custom and have fancy designs and toppers! They are the ones who are ridiculous for thinking they can pay Walmart bakery prices for what you and other custom cake decorators make. It's on a totally different level and can't be compared, so the pricing is going to be completely different.

    This was so real and helpful. I was stressing so much about cake pricing because it seemed so confusing there are so many nuances that nobody discusses. Thanks for helping home bakers

    Thank you so much for this video because I have been finding that I am undercharging for cakes that are taking me a lot longer than I think. That’s such a good point that everyone’s skill set is different, everyone’s base design is different, and people will pay for it if they want it. Don’t let anyone talk me down if they don’t want to pay my price. Like you said we are making edible art and if you want the Lamborghini looking cake you have to pay the Lamborghini price. So many great points thank you so much!

    I love your channel! I don’t even make cakes 😅 but I create eLearning courses and there is so muuuuch haggling! I used to work for a company that didn’t set boundaries, every time a client requested a change and used the phrase “it’s just…” I felt a weekend disappear.

      Shopkeepers at night markets have told me that they actually enjoy the haggling because it's fun--but there are so many spaces in which it's so unwanted and just shouldn't exist!

    Baking is considered an art form. So a custom cake taking into skill, time, ingredients, cost & labor it's an understandable price. And also have inflation and she's using cad currency.

      I use just a touch of black gel food colouring from Chefmaster and then add in just a touch of yellow to help balance out that purple colour that sometimes comes through with black.

    Are quotes set in stone for you? How would you go about adding more into a quote? How do you go about letting them know that it might be more at the end upfront

    • @SweetDreamsBakeShoppe
      @SweetDreamsBakeShoppe  8 місяців тому

      I apologize for this super late reply! So out of fairness to customers, I do make my quotes set in stone. As a consumer, I would not want the price to change at the very end (even if it was just by a little bit) because I would want to know what I'm getting into. If you're still working on quoting and you find you're getting shorted at the end, it's always better to overshoot and then you can always let the customer know at pickup that it actually ended up being cheaper and you can refund them/take off a few bucks for their closing invoice. Hope that helps! :)

    I price my cakes a lot cheaper than others because I’m still learning and perfecting my work (but it’s also not how I make a living, I’m still a teenager living with my parents)
