Wow, I went through this entire topic of this video yesterday. I stayed firm with my quote, I gave other options as well. So this video let's me know I handled that situation professionally 😊
Thankyou so much, your advice is exactly what I needed. I recently started my online baking business and I struggled so much with creating boundaries. I attracted a lot of people who asked for discounts and I ended up being too nice. I felt guilty for my prices and then I had to lower them so more people can order. This was because one woman told me that another bakery sold her cupcakes for so cheap and her kids liked my stuff but it was too expensive. Also Can you please tell me how to be confident in my own work because everytime I get a customized order, I get so nervous as I feel that I cant perfect the cake and then this leads me to lower my prices even further.
You are so welcome! It definitely takes time to build that confidence. You are eventually going to get to a point where you feel you are continually putting out consistent work and then you need to just think about how much time and love you’re really putting in! Once you quote for your cake don’t bring it down; if you feel it isn’t up to par to the price you quoted then put a bit more into it. Good luck with your baking business 🥰💕
I saw this IG post said something along the lines of “ you are not too expensive they just don’t value it.” And it really stuck with me. If she really wanted your better tasking cupcakes she’d pay. I quoted someone for cinnamon rolls with a minimum of 6. She replied she wanted 1 and wanted to pay less then $4. Girl, go to the mall and pay $5 at Cinnabon. Bye. Don’t lower your prices.
@@adrianaflores714 Wow I love that quote. I guess people will do anything to get cheap stuff to the point that they become unable to see things from the sellers perspective.
This is great. You also have to account for the time it takes for your interactions with the client before you even start the cake. Sometimes it takes me an hour or two from the time they first contact me for me to do a quote (especially if you're quoting for more than one option) and them decide on a design and details, etc.
I really appreciate the perspective and advice in this video. I'm a new subscriber, and I've been selling homemade cookies on and off for a while. I have gone and explained this to ppl cause they think I charge to much for my pan dulce. I really don’t but some ppl just don’t care that it takes u hours to make something they see a similar product at the store and they say well why don’t u charge like them. I say if u think mine is the same as the store one then you can happily get it at the store. I can’t buy in major Bulk like them I can’t make 100 pieces of bread in 3 hours like them cause I have a home oven not a wall oven. But I do hem and ha sometimes. 😓
Aw yeah it’s definitely tricky when it comes to items like those because they may not necessarily “look elaborate”. However taste is something that’s difficult to replicate too and I would personally pay for that. 🥰💕
Hi, thanks for this video and your great advice. Could you give me some advice on how to handle clients who are consistently changing their mind on the amount of items/treats they want. I find myself giving them 4-5 diff quotes because they’re like “well what about with just 12 of each treat then ok what about 6” 😩. In the end I’m having to break down pricing of each treat and not hearing back after all that work. Another example I had this lady wanting two seperate cakes diff themes but couldn’t pay what I quoted. So then she asked me to make one big cake with both designs. Now, I would normally charge more for what I quoted for the one large cake but felt I had to charge less since I had already given her a price for the two smaller cakes. Please help. 💕
Ugh-I totally relate to that first problem--it is SO common and it can be such a time waster! I’m not actually sure that there is a way to get out of that completely. However, my minimums that I implemented really helped me avoid the smaller increments of numbers-not too much calculation there for me to do. As for the different cake quoting, don’t feel like you have to charge less. We often get stuck in this mindset of “cake sizing”. Cake sizing, at least at my bakery, played a very small role in changing the price. Of course there would be SOME differentiation, but a good example is my half cake tutorial. In that tutorial I made a half cake, but I would charge the same amount as the whole cake because it’s essentially about the actual work being done and less about the small increase or decrease in amount of materials. Hope that helps a bit! 🥰🥰
This is great advice, I totally agree. Confidence is a MUST when dealing with the public. Any waffling, hedging, or sense of insecurity WILL be taken advantage of. My most important rule - Once you make a decision and communicate it, STICK TO YOUR GUNS. (Unless facts change, of course)
Thank you so much for such a great informations . Can i ask where you got that impression matt for your fondant its amazing and i would love to try. I am only baking since the pendamic have so much to learn this definitely helping
You are welcome! Here is the tutorial for that cake and in the description there is a link to where you can find it: ua-cam.com/video/UgO-1vlThZM/v-deo.html
The prices are the prices, something I have learned is to accept that not everyone will value your work as much as you do and is okay they can go find someone who can work in their price range. Other people just don't understand the pricing, so sometimes you can figure out their budget and show them what they can afford based on what they are willing to pay. Maybe a smaller cake and more simple design could work for the people who still want your cake.
My biggest problem is that the majority of my customers don’t want to pay much money . I charged €45 for a tall 6 inch which is an absolute steal 👌🏾 but most people will haggle and say they want a small cake . Then when I make a small cake they will complain it’s too small 😅. So it gets really frustrating for me . Also people will send me €200 + cakes and want all the trims and crazy things on the cake and when I say it’ll cost extra they just order the basic drip cake with bueno bars . I find that this is not allowing me to grow and since I’m new I’m constantly changing prices which I know isn’t good but I always feel cheated . I spend 5 hrs plus on most of my cakes I don’t sleep , study rest etc when I do cakes so I really do think I need to charge more but I won’t have a business . Sorry this comment is so long I know you’re busy Ashley but any help would be beneficial. 😍😍😍 your channel has been a real blessing to me
If they complain it’s too small-that’s what they ordered! Lol. Also, sizing actually doesn’t make that much of a difference for me so the difference between an 8 inch and a 6 inch for example wouldn’t be more than $10 which most likely wouldn’t sway people. It is difficult in the beginning to grow your portfolio just from orders alone. People stick to what they see you’ve already done so it’s best to make those over the top cakes on your own time to show potential customers what you can do. Those smaller orders will still make you a good profit, but it all comes down to proper pricing for sure. If you’re spending that long on a simple cake that you charged less for then definitely you either need to charge more or you need to spend less time on it. Good luck! 💕
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe thank you so much ,Ashley for your prompt response ❤️❤️❤️. At the moment I’ve made over 20 cakes , 17 of which have been sold and I’ve done glam cakes for families and friends etc . Clients usually pick those cakes but as soon as they hear the price they back off . I feel as though the type of customers I attract are a bit cheap and don’t seem to value my time 😔. But I guess these things come with time ☺️
I recently had to slightly increase my prices because after I calculated everything in detail plus the hours put into my cakes...I wasn't making money. The last cake I made $25...not including the 5 hours of my time. Unfortunately, if I include those hrs in the quote no one will buy my cakes. The last 3 quotes I provided...all 3 said that it was too much. Ex 3 layer 6 inch covered in swiss meringue buttercream with some edible images and fondant work. I quoted $60 and she didn't like the price. On top of that, that cake with the details would have taken me at least 4 hours. That doesn't include the hour I already spent researching some designs for her. I feel defeated and I'm currently re-evaluating if designing custom cakes for people is even worth my time moving forward 🤷♀️
If we can be 100% real I would say... If you can't afford it then don't try to live a high life or stop showing off on social media, just don't have a party or buy a cake from a grocey store if that's what your budget can afford. Save your money for more important things like electricity bills, gas, mortgage / rent, daily food or emergency lol because apparently you don't really have that much extra instead of stressing yourself out and the baker ✌️😅
So... bargaining with home bakers is the same all over the world.. not only with us... huh.. 🤣🤣 And.. yes.. thanks for confirming my pricing method... there's a lot of " relatives / parties concern of my well being " saying I'm too harsh with my pricing.. ( Exactly the same thing I say to the customers who says " oh that place has the same cake for a lower price.. )
Oh most definitely! Everyone does it!! So strange. I don’t do it with a contractor who would come and fix my house up which is also “done by quote” so I’m really not sure why this happens 😬. Happy baking my friend 💕🥰
a customer wants a customized cake 3 days before. i told her the price and said it is waaay to pricey🤔 and she wants a Fondant 🙄 well, i told her thats how it is.. she ended getting something from a bakery that has bad reviews 😊
After I have quoted a price for a cake, the customer sent me a picture of a messy cake and asked me how much I would charge for this cake . I responded ,the same price as any of my cakes !

You are so welcome!! 🥰
Great video!
Thanks so much, Tess! 🥰💕
Agreed!
Good info. Thanks 😙
You are so welcome, Deedee! :)
your videos are very helpful! thank you much🥰
You are so welcome!! 🥰💕
God I wish customers understood everything you just explained !! Lol some customers are amazing and then others not so much
What if I already have many many tool and pans? Do you still add those in?
I definitely take that into account because there's always going to be wear and tear on your equipment that will need to be replaced eventually. :)
Thanku very very much Ashley....I love u r confidence..... From India

But I guess these things come with time ☺️
Yes that happen to me too they want the smallest cake I have and when I give them it they watching it like this for that money 😒
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe what are the best ways you would advice to build a cake portfolio without spending a fortune and giving out so many free cakes
Love this😊💯
Thanks, Keisha! 🥰
Wow! THANK YOU!
You are welcome!!
Tough cookie! I love it.
hehe thank you!
Awwwww Excellent 👍🏽 thank you dear
🥰💕
So... bargaining with home bakers is the same all over the world.. not only with us... huh.. 🤣🤣
And.. yes.. thanks for confirming my pricing method... there's a lot of " relatives / parties concern of my well being " saying I'm too harsh with my pricing..
Aw yeah someone on here commented something I really liked-not everyone is your customer nor do you necessarily want them to be 😉
Boom, baby!
Not everyone IS your customer!
💯🙌🏻
After I have quoted a price for a cake, the customer sent me a picture of a messy cake and asked me how much I would charge for this cake . I responded ,the same price as any of my cakes !
Yes--because inevitably I'm sure you'd make it neater!! :)
They do that with my custom swimwear...they want everything for $30 !!!!
Ooo do you make custom swimwear?? What’s your Insta handle for it?
Awesome information... #truth
Thank you, Lisa!
YEESSS!! 🙌🏼

A customer came in 3 (!!!) times, for a refund on 3 different cakes. She was quite literally having her cakes and eating them. After the 3rd time, I declined to provide her with another (free) cake. Ah, well.... live n learn ❣🤣
😩😩😩 glad you finally said no! Wow!
If someone wants a low priced cake, they can go to the grocery store.
Agreed!
i wish i had guts to charge 😭
You can do it!
People want things for free. Entitlement
Yes it can be frustrating for small business owners-I especially find this rampant in creative fields!
