There are two old time dim sum restaurants in Guangzhou with long history dated back more than a century ago, they are To To Quay and Lotus Fragrance House, both are located on the same street, opposite to one another. Those are old places so they aren't as clean as the one you went, but they are authentic and original, both places are super packed every morning and noon.
Good puerh tea tastes like good coffee, mostly old people like strong puerh tea. Oolong tea is similar to puerh tea but doesn't taste as "old" and "strong dark". Iron Kunyin tea is something between Oolong tea and green tea, it is more suitable for young people. Dragon Well tea is a green tea, good Dragon Well tea has an aromatic fragrance that can't be found in any other tea in the world, it should tastes smooth, if not then it is not good Dragon Well tea. The most expensive tea in the world is from an ancient Dragon Well tea tree in Hangzhou, only a few ounces harvested from this tree each year.
The authenic Dim Sum ( Cantonese bteakfast) items are shrimp dumplings, chicken feet, Sui Mai (meat balls), rolled rice crepe, steamed spare ribs and pork stomach. BBQ pork and Lai Fun noodle are not.
I'm Chinese American last in China in 1984, my guess about Zhanjiang vs Guangzhou in terms of foreigners mixed is Guangzhou is a manufacturer hubs so foreigners there engage in trade, importing China's products like garments or daily use product to their countries, that's why there are even a little Africa and also shops and restaurants cater to African. Zhanjiang is a tech center, so many Europeans who work for tech firms or engage in tech related products trade live there! If that makes sense, just my speculation!
