Paul brought John the Tibetan book of the Dead and from their they wrote Tommorrow Never Knows...a mind blowing track to this day, probably the greatest psychedelic song ever written. Donavan was not in the picture.

Wow! What a song to randomly pick from the Beatles. This was their lead guitar player George Harrison’s song. He had been heavily influenced by Indian music and learned the sitar. He played it on a few earlier Beatles songs. It is very different than anything the Beatles did and it shows how open they were to new sounds. This is why their songs were very diverse and what makes them the most influential band in music.
These boys created their own genre as they went...nothing like them.

Yes, and one of the reasons this kind of music is so wonderful is because nothing is synthetic. The instruments are played by the hands, coming from the heart and soul. Please don't get too hung up on genres; music should simply be enjoyed, whatever label we put on it. If it moves you in some way, then it's good music. :) Peace.

I used to work at a factory where a) the COO was a big Beatles fan, and b) a lot of the floor workers were from India. So the PA system had a lot of Beatles music, a lot of Indian music, and every once in a while, a two-for-one like this: the Beatles replicating Indian music.

This was 1967 the summer of love led by this album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Check out the album cover, it's the most iconic in history. This Lp is regarded as the greatest in history although many, me included would say that their previous Lp, Revolver is the greatest of all time. Revolver and Abbey Road are the other two most iconic Lol covers in history. The Beatles were flying high on LSD when they recorded Pepper. This Lp changed pop culture forever and even how we listened to music. George Harrison was only 24 when he wrote this song. He was getting deeply into eastern philosophies at this time. The song and all instruments are Indian. The lyrics are great, very deep and spiritual. Check out The Beatles brother cause you have no idea what you've missed and then tell your friends.

@@POPE. That's funny, no they were not now were they but they didn't start any of it. The Paul died in 66 and was replaced by a double started it all. I believe some DJ started all that and from then on all of the clues on the Sgt Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour and Abbey Cover clues about his death. I think The Beatles had a good laugh over all of it and planted clues on these sleeve's although Paul and Ringo deny it to this day. Too bad John and George are gone now so who knows if they would have said yes they did. There's no doubt In my mind that they did, it's pretty obvious. Then all of the LSD scrutiny on Pepper. My favorite is and again started by a radio DJ about Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds about the song being about an acid trip. Lucy L. Sky S and Diamonds D. Actually it's was influenced by John's favorite childhood book Alice In Wonderland as seen through the eyes of a now grown up young man. John later stated that although the song had psychedelic imagery it wasn't about a particular acid trip.
@@POPE. Two other great songs from Pepper if you haven't heard them are Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and A Day In The Life which will blow you away. The latter is regarded as the greatest Lp track of all time.
From "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!" to this in less time than elapses between Olympic Games...the mind will never cease to boggle. This dropped in the year that I was born, I've been a fan since the age of 13, and my appreciation for this track only grows with time --check out "Love You To": also George (via India), and from the year before...

George Martin said the first song Harrison brought to him for this album was pretty ordinary and said, “Is this really the best you can do? Why don’t you have another go.” Harrison brought back this song and Martin said, while it clearly wasn’t commercial, it was VERY interesting.
This is one of George Harrison's Beatles songs. The primary song writers and singers were John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but all four contributed. What a first Beatles song to start with... in you and without you, dude! LOL! What a journey you're beginning! As you'll see there are NO two Beatles songs alike. They released over 200 songs in their 10 span as Beatles, and you've only scratched the surface! The main instrument you hear is the sitar, one George learned to play from his good friend Ravi Shankar. George (and the Beatles) first introduced this instrument into rock 'n roll for the first time with the song "Norwegian Wood" off the Rubber Soul album (1965), and used it from time to time as on this song you did here. I suggest you do Norwegian Wood soon as it's a little more early Beatles song than Within You, and is very different, as usual! Another cool song off of the Sgt Pepper's concept album you should do soon is John Lennon singing out "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". My favorite song on the album.
This album came during a time in their lives that they had achieved everything a band could have hoped for, yet they found that there was still an emptiness that money, security and world wide fame had not fulfilled! They looked at spiritual leaders and spirituality for meaning! They looked at Hinduism, Buddhism and other religions and along the way heard many great musical styles! The Beatles are one of if not the most experimental mainstream artists in history, they started out as a pop group but as they got older and started doing more drugs especially LSD they’re sound evolved and changed from album to album. Imo I would say yes, they started experimenting way more with different cutting edge studio techniques like tape loops and sound effects, most of their songs all had a different unique sound to them. Like the song you listened too had a Indian vibe to it with Indian instruments, no other song on this album sounds like this. They had multiple eras their first couple of years was pop rock music their middle years was known as the Marijuana era as they started smoking weed regularly, then it was the LSD era for about two years where their music was mostly trippy and psychedelic and their later years was a mixture of pretty much everything. It is truly a journey to listen to how their sound and styles evolved album to album.

Im glad to see some reaction to a less famous song . Guitarist George got into Indian music thru RAVI SHANKAR . See the Monterey Festival film of 1967 ... Many different creative scenes exploded into cross - influences that year . Philosophy - sharing - weariness of endless wars .
George Harrison was only 24 when they made this.
By the time the Beatles broke up, they were all still in their 20's.
Rockabilly, classic rock, bubblegum pop, mature ballads, British music hall tunes, classical, R&B, Indian raga-the Beatles did it all! They absorbed and reinvented all of the musical culture around them, changing it forever.
If you don't like one song, just try the next one. There's sure to be something you'll like!

The Beatles progressed and varied more than any other band in my opinion. My two all time best are Beatles for breakfast and Led Zeppelin for Dinner! If you listen to them in order you really understand how they developed and changed. You don't even know about Billy Preston aka the 5th Beatle - check rooftop concert, You'll be shocked
In my list of Top10 Beatles songs Within You Without You is clearly there. George Harrison did something great: he open world music to Western folks. Think, this was 1967.

When this album came out, even a goofy seventh grader could tell that it was the album that changed the world. It spawned a fusion of styles and instruments and freedoms and bands that came to be known as progressive, as it was, by light years, progressive. And this is perhaps there very best song. It speaks highly of your intuition that you would have picked the best, randomly. "Across the Universe" and "A Day in the Life" are strong contenders. Check out Dead Can Dance's cover of this song. They do no bad songs. None. And do some of the very best of all. "Sanvean" is pretty hard to beat, unless you are David Hykes.

What a great song to pick at random. The Beatles had an insane trajectory. They started out kind of like a boy band making music predominantly consumed by teenage girls (in truth by everyone) and gradually started getting more sophisticated. Eventually they stopped touring and started emphasizing innovations in production techniques. They have ridiculous stylistic range and the ratio of hits to misses is probably unsurpassed. They weren’t niche either, their songs tend to shoot for universal appeal.
They were really in tune and extremely diverse…incredible.
It's not really a Beatles song or recording due to the fact that George Harrison is the only Beatle member that played and sang on it.

The Beatles across their 7 year career (and 13 albums) explored many genres. If you randomly pick songs from their albums, you'll quickly find that every song sounds vastly different from others. As a Beatles nerd, I can - if you like - recommend songs based on what "kind" of music you wanna hear from them either in terms of genre or in terms of vibe or, as you are doing now, just keep on randomly picking songs. The only disadvantage with picking randomly is that you might miss out on hearing their best stuff, however, the majority of what the Beatles made is decent tbh. Up to you.

@@POPE. lol every Beatles fan you ask will have a different set of favorites, they had soooo many diversified hits in over 230 songs in less than 8 years. It is a very deep rabbit hole you should explore over time. Great reaction though to a song many would not have in their favorites.
@@POPE. Very tough to answer. Album wise? I would say 'Revolver'. It's either 'Revolver' or 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' in terms of albums. A single song though? Almost impossible to answer as it entirely depends on your personal taste and what genre/sound you vibe with most. However, what is considered by many as their greatest song (in terms of innovation, ahead of its time, etc) it would have to be 'A Day in the Life'. Other contenders would have to be 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. Try them out and if you're still interested, it's well worth your time deep diving into their stuff. :)

In addition, they are more than "just" music, because with the Beatles arised a new youth culture, that redefined the coexistence between young and old in larger parts of the planet, with all the positive and negative side effects. In this context it is useful, to deal with the phenomenon "Beatlemania". Many books have been written and of course there is a lot in the internet. Furthermore; my personal favorite albums, without making any quality differences, are: "Abbey Road", "The Beatles (White Album)", "Revolver", "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Rubber Soul" and all of their up-tempo rock'n'roll tracks like "Twist and shout", "Long tall Sally", "I'm down", "You can't do that" etc.

George hooked up with India’s premier sitar player, Ravi Shankar who taught him the stinged instrument. That percussion your hear are tablas I believe.
