Always really appreciate a reviewer that clarifies their preferences and clearly identifies differences between other bikes in the category, great review 🤙🏼
i think it was smart, get the bike out, can the team - sales up instantly so not stuck with huge inventory and not stuck paying for a team that in reality enduro means nothing as its hard to get any media to EWS(fuck EDR) . basically nobody buys a MTB beyond XC because of race results.
A race team can be an amazing sales attribute, but most teams (Ibis included) fail to produce enough content from the team to validate the whole thing.
Maybe they'll get back in the game now that they have a bike with the credentials to rival the other big bikes in the field. As good as the Ripmo is, it's numbers are more trail than enduro by 2023 standards.
Thanks for the honest review. Interesting that Ibis went race instead of long travel AM. I’m currently enjoying my Canfield Lithium on bigger terrain and parks, and my Ibis Ripley on local and smaller terrain.
Great quiver Xav! One of my biggest concerns is that folks who LOVED their HD3 as an all arounder will think this is the replacement- it's not. It's a GREAT bike, but has a more specific intended use.
Everytime the same problem with Jeff videos: The riding is so awesome I get distracted and can't hear a single word, so I have to watch it twice! Man your riding is simply magical
Hi Jeff thanks for a next great review. Thons of great job! The pictures are beautiful. The camera man, well done! I am kinda in between Santa MT / hd6 and yeti sb 160. How do they compare to each other in therms of playfulness? Is one of those bikes particularly better in pulling off switchbacks and carving nasty corners? I see myself playful, like to jump of everything. I am biking a lot in Swiss Alps which means 1.5/2k+ meters of ascent before all epic descents. I value Playfulness over efficiency on the ascent but still have to be able to pedal up as i do now with Megatower v1. Does small well of hd6 outdo santa and yeti in terms of maneuverability, and “manualability”?
So I had the opportunity to demo this bike yesterday and I have to agree with you about its climbing characteristics. I found the bike a bit awkward to climb on relative to my Ripmo V2. The seated position on a size S3 was farther back than was really comfortable for me, and I noticed that I had to put more power through the pedals to get the bike to roll over rough sections on technical parts of the climb. The descents were the opposite, I rode this bike down a variety of steep and technical trails and managed to set a couple new PRs. I think this bike could be sweet if you ride a lot of lift-accessed areas or do a lot of shuttling, but for big climbing days I'd give it a pass.
I used to be in the school of thought that more travel = more fun. But lately I've been far more in the shorter travel and nimble camp. The terrain i ride hasn't changed. I think I just realized that a trail bike with a burly fork, some tokens, inserts and some strong wheels will handle anything I can throw at it and more.
Agreed! Went from the 27.5 Firebird to the brand new Shadowcat and, although you do lose the forgiveness and "send" factor of a 180mm enduro bike, the 140 trail bike is so much easier to place on the trail, throw shapes in the air, or muscle it up climbs. ... and with reasonably good line choice it can keep up with most enduro bikes (and it keeps your mind alert too). Trail bike ftw
Yeah I agree with you Dennis, trail bikes are awesome! But it's also soooo fun to try other bikes that respond better to different styles, helps create a more well-rounded style!
@@JeffKendallWeed i break out the hardtail, and DJ pretty frequently! Just don't have a long travel enduro or DH rig in the quiver currently. I would love to ride a full DH 29er at a bike park sometime. I've only ever ridden 27.5 and smaller wheels.
@@dennispikephotography Yeah, I thought so too before I switched from the old Firebird, and have been proven right... Such a fun bike! Watch Freehub Mag's review on it, the rided absolutely sends it full tilt! Also waiting on JKW to send it to the moon once he reviews it... 🤣
Thanks Jeff for another really informative and great video. The candidness is why I appreciate you so much. I do love my Ripmo. I kinda thought this would be too much bike for my style also. Take good care my friend! 😊
Thanks for watching, Howard! The Ripmo is a great rig, more of an "everyday, everyone" bike. The HDR was much less purpose built for racing than the new HD6 is.
Yeah and there area a bunch of other details that I think would translate nicely, too. Will have to do some simpler vlogs about what I'd be lookng for in an updated Ripmo!
Ditch the clevis shock for the setup the HD6 has, up the rear progression to around 30%, maybe go up to a 60mm stroke shock (like the Sentinel has), slacken the HTA a hair and it would be dramatic improvement over the Ripmo V2. Maybe work on the cornering feel a bit too, Ripmos are still a bit vague leaned over.
For many! For me, the Exo+ doesn’t have the support, it folds over for me at the usual 22 psi. DD is the only way I feel comfy. But that’s just me! Also I don’t mind a max grip rear tire.
@@JeffKendallWeed I have been watching since 7k sub's and so glad to see how you have grown. Great to see you have a little girl as well. Shotgun Pro review? Absolutely agree with what you say. I spotted SC Nomad speculated with EXO+ front and DD rear so I tried that setup out. I had to put a little more pressure in the front because I experienced the folding as you said, but a combination of Maxx Grip, ACS3 coil conversion and Zipp Moto3Zero rims gives insane levels of front end grip and compliance. A lightweight insert in the front may help to allow lower front end tyre pressure until I replace the front with a DD as you say. Keep up the good work and loving all you do and your amazing positive attitude.
Nope. Un-sagged, it's already quite low. With that much travel, it just gets really low at bottom out. I bent a pedal pretty bad from lots of pedal strikes on my Sunshine Coast trip.
Old wheelmen teammate here! Love your reviews! Curious if you have ever ridden the specialized enduro and thoughts compared to that? Would love to see a review on that bike.
Enjoyed the video, and appreciate your review of the HD6. Definitely more bike than I need. I test rode an HD5 and enjoyed it. I ended up getting a V1 Ripmo. It’s been my all around bike for a while, and is so much fun to ride! I lengthened the fork air spring to 170mm, and installed a negative 1.5 degree angle head set, so HTA is 63.9 degrees. Ideal set up for me riding local trails where I live in western NC.
Thanks Jason! The HD5 is soooo different from a V1 Ripmo- but glad you got the V1 set up better! I can't recall if they fit, but big ol 2.6 tires are great on the Ripmo AF and Ripmo V2s, they raise the BB and keep the bike more stable through the rocks. I still enjoyed my usual 2.5/2.4 combo in Asheville, but for the rougher stuff, the 2.6s would be nice.
Indeed! Yes, they do fit. I’ve got a 2.6 in front on my Ripmo, Maxxis Assegai, and a 2.5 Aggressor in back. It does help with traction on chunky rock sections.
Great review! I built up an HD6 last month and it's much more fun than my old Ripmo. I think that has more to do with the new sizes though. I was between sizes and went for the XL Ripmo, but the size 4 HD6 fits like a glove. Climbing is a bit more of a slog but otherwise I'm much happier.
I want to demo one, but I really enjoy the Ripmo for riding here in Pisgah. Makes quick work of the climbs and with an X2 and 38 it takes the edge of the chunk.
I ended up replacing my Ripmo AF with a RM Altitude back in September, but still want to demo an HD6 next time Ibis demo fleet comes out this way. My local Ibis dealer isn't stocking any because he hasn't had a ton serious interest, is sitting on a bunch of leftover bikes as it is (I snagged his last carbon RM Altitude for a great price), and mullet bikes in general don't sell well in Colorado, this is 29er country and this same shop sells Ripmos like hotcakes. Absolutely love my Altitude though, on downhills its an absolute weapon and still pedals really well.
Ahhhh by chance is your local shop Pedal Pushers in Golden? If so, I remember Eric and Brenda well! Anyhow, yeah, for an all around bike the Ripmo is great, and I was STOKED on that Altitude! Especially for Co style chunk. That Altitude was one of my most favoritest bikes ever.
@@JeffKendallWeed Yes Pedal Pushers is my normal shop. The Altitude is an amazing bike in Colorado, so smooth in the chunk, still jumps better than the Ripmo, and isn't really any worse on switchbacks with the dropouts in the short position
I'm pretty sad that I can't buy a 27.5 bike from Ibis anymore. The HD3 was perfect for PNW trails--Oakridge, OR. HD4/5 seem pretty great, too. The HD6 is too big of a bike for me (and I think a lot of people). It's not an all-mountain bike anymore but a real Enduro race bike. I also don't want 29 front or rear. I'm short (5'5") but have other mtber friends at 5'7 and 5'9" that also hate 29ers. I demoed the Ripmo and I was like, wow, best 29er I've ever ridden...still don't like 29ers. I feel like I'm up on a horse. Guess it's Pivot for me now. I loved my HD3. Thanks for the great videos, Jeff.
I'd certainly enjoy to add one of these to my quiver for Kamloops steeps, in this exact color actually! This is a really good review Jeff, kind of what I expected to hear (a bit big for Galbraith). That said, I still want long, mid & gravel to wrap up my quiver. Love that green!
Thank you Pete! I was doing my best to be as transparent as possible, mostly due to so many folks loving that HD3 for all around riding. I don't want to yammer about the HD6 being the BeSt BIkE EvAr!" if it's going to be overkill for a lotta folk. But for the right customer, make no mistake- it's an amazing rig.
I don't buy new bikes as often as most, so I'm still quite happy with my HD5. The HD6 was super tempting and IMO, is a visual stunner...but I decided to buy a motorcycle instead 😁
The HD5 is a great bike! Congrats on the moto, enjoy it, it's fun to change things up a bit! Just remember- bicycles build you up, motorcycles break you down. Maintain that balance between the two!
I've really enjoyed the Endura Spray Trousers. I almost always leave the vent open, but I have a few pairs I cycle thru, and they've been good. If you're between sizes, size down (big cut).
Great review, thank you very much! How does the HD6 compare to the RM Altitude from your view? I know you have been a big fan of the RM so I am curious about your opinion.
Hi Jeff, I love the review, I am looking for something of the longer travel, like an enduro bike. Most of my trials are blue, but ride like blacks or double blacks. I do some tech climbing and descending here and there. I need a bike under the 6500 range. Thoughts? Thanks 😊
I appreciate that you always have a different rotation of bikes than most others on youtube. However, it makes me wonder. How do the canyon's/YT's compare to the more boutique bikes you usually review? Have you ridden any?
Thanks Andrew! For better, for worse, it's a collection of bikes that I'm able to scrounge up... I should probably put in the effort to try a Canyon/YT/Commencal... I don't know anyone at those brands, and don't have much budget for stuff that's not available thru Jenson USA.
I’m looking to get this or the yeti sb 165 I love the 27.5 feel but a mullet bike also sounds great ! I just don’t know which one climbs better that’s my overall decision deal breaker.
Thanks for the note! I have not tried an SB165. I generally prefer dual 29" wheels, I never bought into mullet hype, and after my 2020 head injury, kinda struggle with jumping 27.5. I've been really digging the SB160 lately!
I have the sb165 and love it. Climbs just as well if not better than the ibis with the switch infinity. +sb165 on sale because of the model year being older. Surprised ibis basically rebranded the 165 and didn't change much.
To give an option of a more responsive bike? Ibis has always had tidy, short stays, and until everyone else started doing differing lengths, it was usually seen as a pro rather than a con. I do think an adjustable drop out like Rocky Mtn did for the Altitude would make sense- a fun short short setting in the low/mid 430 range, and a boring, long setting in the 440+ range for tall folks.
How would you compare this to the Orbea Rallon or the RM Altitude? Looking for a bike to get serious about enduro racing but also want it to be my only bike that Id feel comfortable pedaling around all day, and these three are my top picks so far. I've gotten a lot of demoing experience on the HD6, a brief demo on the Altitude, but yet none on the Rallon
Thanks Kevan! We filmed for a while, and Reilly SLAYED it on the editing. The only problem is that the next video won't be nearly this fancy! hahahaha!
Well said. I live in the Austin area and the only lift is Spider Mountain and the other DH parks are in the same area northwest so it’s not often I get to go. Do you have recommendations on a bike with enough travel to take on downhill and formidable jumps as well as climbing around ATX? I’ve only come up with finding an e-bike (bring the comments YT… my back doesn’t mind). 😂
Ah for Austin, I thought my 140 travel HD4 was great. These days I could see either a Ripmo Carbon or a Ripley AF being a great choice. Mid-travel is plenty for most stuff around there (RPR, Cat is all we rode)
I'm in ATX. I ride a Specialized Stumpjumper Evo Pro in mixed wheel. I put a WRP yoke and a Cascade link on it. I'm a heavy rider, 220 and it handles Spider Mountain just fine. It is highly adjustable so you're not stuck with 1 geo. The adjustability covers trail and enduro. The only upgrade I'd recommend are the tires. I've experienced less grip on the stock tires going fast but for trail riding, like a Brushy Creek it's a good tire. The other must have is a STFU because if you are hammering fast, the chain will 100% chip the frame just behind the chain ring.
Thanks SD! I probably will not do an Oso review. I still haven't ridden one, and eMTB content doesn't get that many clicks. If they weren't so hard to get (too expensive for Ibis to loan me one) that could change... That said, I'd be more excited by an SL style e Bike from Ibis. I really liked the Intense Tazer with the hot swabble battery. That was a cool design, the bike rode great, and with a small 6lb battery in my pack, had insane range.
Thanks for watching! And thanks for supporting your local retailer, that's great. I didn't truly understand the value of Jenson USA until I was working at Ibis. Ibis has always been awesome to their IBDs, but there inevitably comes a time when there is a surplus of old stock and a cash shortage, and $$$ is needed to either purchase new models or pay taxes on that inventory. Large online outfits like Jenson USA would be able to purchase that inventory in one fell swoop, and would keep everything in the black. Also, it was pretty often that someone who was hundreds of miles from an IBD would want a bike, but Ibis is not consumer direct. Both are key, both are different.
Seems like an outstanding bike that is definitely not for me. (I'm currently building a Ripley AF.) To your point about climbing, the thought of using the lockout seems to defeat one of my favorite things about DW link - that I can just ride it open all the time.
To be fair, when fully open, the HD6 pedals pretty well. But I do notice the chance in efficiency more than on any other Ibis bike. If you're going Ripley AF, then the HD6 is likely way overkill. Thanks for watching!!!!
Idc what people say, this is the best all rounder bike in the world in my opinion, if i had the money to buy it i would have preordered it, it's on of the best looking bikes especially in the purple haze colour, like you want to do easier things put lighter tires, want to do real enduro it's ready from the box, want to do downhill just put a dual crown fork, like it's too efficient on the climbs for a 165/180mm bike, it feels like a trail bike when descending, the only bad thing about it is the price but you get what you pay, it's the perfect bike for me
As someone who owns an enduro bike (RM Altitude) and has previously owned a Ripmo and has ridden a bunch of the enduro bikes out there. With big bikes, always demo first, enduro bikes aren't necessarily all arounders like the Ripmo is. You have your huge cushy shred sled bikes like the Spire and Norco Range, big hit park bikes like the Nukeproof Giga, super sharp race weapons like the Orbea Rallon and Ibis HD6 (at least based on JKWs review), and some that are kinda all arounders like the RM Altitude.
Since 2018, I haven't had any issues. I think a big part of that is I almost never use the Trunion mount bikes, and also that I tend to swap those shocks off for more aggressive, smaller volume shocks like the Float X.
@@ashkonsenaati8530fox has said they “fixed” the x2 three times now btw. The 23 was just especially bad. I don’t have much faith in the 24 being solved.
I only posted a vlog style video with it, casually talking about it mixed into 30 minutes of travel-vlog. I was injured in August, so had Kristian and Simon ride it and we did a round table type thing. But this is the first proper video I've done about it.

I gravitate towards long travel enduro bikes and this one looks awesome!
Right on Donny! I need to ride this thing even more!
If I were to get the hd6, I'd make it full 27.5 and put an intend infinity dual crown fork on it
Hahaha like the Loam Cowboy guy? I'd rather just go full HD at that point... But TBH, I'm too old for DH b ikes!
Excellent video! Peace and wheelies.
I think it would be interesting to compare this to a mullet canyon torque. They seem like similar bikes and I think it could be a competitive pair!
Yeah I should probably try to get some Canyon bikes...
7k for a bike insane...regular mtb doesnt need a bike over 3k...i be happy with the commencal for 2k
Great vid I could watch you ride all day dude. Quick question what pants would you recommend for wet weather!?
Hi Jeff, I like your videos very much. What differences can you notice between HD5 and the HD6 in the ride style? And what do you prefer?
Thanks for the video Jeff 👍
Once again, the best bike reviewer on UA-cam comes in with the best review on UA-cam of a given bike!
Thank you Spencer!
I want to see Jeff ride a norco optic or fluid
Funny you asked… wish I had one for myself! I rode the Norco Optic!

I fall squarely into the “looking for a good time” camp with my bike choice ls
Hahaha yeah I think most folks are!
WAY TO GO ON 100K
Thanks Tahoe!
Playful chainstay length sounds fun for size medium and small. But why would they keep the same rear center dimensions for the larger sizes
Great revue
Thank u
Nate is a good dude
Jeff - Curious what size bike you were riding and how tall you are. Thanks
Amazing awesome bike and video
What was the weight on this build
Yeah you made a mini movie…amazing step in quality holy cow
Thanks Kevan! We filmed for a while, and Reilly SLAYED it on the editing. The only problem is that the next video won't be nearly this fancy! hahahaha!
@@JeffKendallWeed that’s okay, you can’t have a Michelin dinner every meal but when you do it’s a treat
Whats the song at the beginning?
The other must have is a STFU because if you are hammering fast, the chain will 100% chip the frame just behind the chain ring.
this video was a home run!
Thanks Lost! Hope you found your way!
A good looking ibis, hot damn!
I just wish I had one that wasn't a green shade of black! You can barely see it in the dark forest!
excellent video as usual
Thanks, Reilly killed it with editing, as well as filming the dusty stuff, and Logan was a great sport about all the rainy day shots.
Of course the X2 shock gave in! No surprise here. Ugh!
What are your thoughts on Ibis 35mm carbon wheels? Considering upgrading the blackbirds on my Ripmo...
They are fine. I prefer the feel of the I9/WR1 combos, but the Ibis 35mm carbons are fine.
Jeff- Will you review the Oso? Thanks for the honest review!
@@JeffKendallWeed I would be really stoked on an SL style Ibis ebike too!
I do enjoy your videos, but I’ve got to support my local bike shop.
Hey are you ever gonna throw a leg over the Propain Tyee??
Seems like an outstanding bike that is definitely not for me. (I'm currently building a Ripley AF.) To your point about climbing, the thought of using the lockout seems to defeat one of my favorite things about DW link - that I can just ride it open all the time.
To be fair, when fully open, the HD6 pedals pretty well. But I do notice the chance in efficiency more than on any other Ibis bike. If you're going Ripley AF, then the HD6 is likely way overkill. Thanks for watching!!!!
Why does every bike manufacturer insist on 180mm rear brake post mounts on enduro bikes??
Instead of 200mm?
@@JeffKendallWeed yes sir
Great review I'm looking for a new bike for next year and i will be doing trans madeira. Im thinking either sb160 or HD6 any recommendations ?
anyone else notice this is a rebranded sb165?
Idc what people say, this is the best all rounder bike in the world in my opinion, if i had the money to buy it i would have preordered it, it's on of the best looking bikes especially in the purple haze colour, like you want to do easier things put lighter tires, want to do real enduro it's ready from the box, want to do downhill just put a dual crown fork, like it's too efficient on the climbs for a 165/180mm bike, it feels like a trail bike when descending, the only bad thing about it is the price but you get what you pay, it's the perfect bike for me
Right on Steve, thanks for watching.
Finally got rid of that wet noodle frame design and the bike’s looks match its ability (but Yeti has been ahead of that long ago)
Every x2 has blown up on me
Since 2018, I haven't had any issues. I think a big part of that is I almost never use the Trunion mount bikes, and also that I tend to swap those shocks off for more aggressive, smaller volume shocks like the Float X.
@@JeffKendallWeedwas it a new 24 model year that blew up?
@@JeffKendallWeedyeah that mashes complete sense. Vorsprungs video on how yokes and trunions stress shocks.
@@ashkonsenaati8530fox has said they “fixed” the x2 three times now btw. The 23 was just especially bad. I don’t have much faith in the 24 being solved.
Came with a spider!!! 😬. Send it back.
Well I'd hope you wouldn't need/want to change anything on a nearly 10k bike
X2 let go, no real surprise there....
I've had good luck recently! Not sure what it is, but that was the first bunk unit in ages...
@@JeffKendallWeed Oh, and awesome riding as usual.
2:14 Pivoted to Racing focused brand yet immediately canceled thier EDR program 🤨
Lol "more focused on racing".. as they cut their EWS team.
Rebranded themselves as a race bike manufacturer then cut their race team 😂
You said it
I disagree Jeff... Everyone knows wheelies win races 😂
Just from the video, it looks like you really not that comfortable on the bike .Just me saying
I am sorry why is there bars on all your windows. Bears or 2 legged rodents
I hear a lot of good things about I is but they’re hideous and look like women’s bikes
I’m glad they finally switched over to a straight top tube
😂
Cheers!
Dude didn’t you review this bike already? I’m so confused. You even have videos of yourself riding and traveling with it.
I only posted a vlog style video with it, casually talking about it mixed into 30 minutes of travel-vlog. I was injured in August, so had Kristian and Simon ride it and we did a round table type thing. But this is the first proper video I've done about it.
