I had not considered that you were doing a full game run. I was wrong and I didn't understand what that meant. Sorry for my foolishness and thank you for showcasing just how much SM64 can be exploited to create one of the most entertaining speed runs of all time.
This commentary style of video is very helpful. I always thought I understood the way the glitches you do work, but just not all the way. Also, do you plan on posting each of the explanations for the tricks on their own?

This makes me wonder how often challenges like this are done in math/physics academia? Like are there challenges out there to solve some simple known problems without the use of common methods of solving it? I know a lot has been learned about Mario 64 due to the A button challenge, and recently the Ice Climbers' break the target record was lowered substantially due to a discovery during a restricted challenge competition. These kinds of challenges really force you to think about things in a different way and stumble upon new and exciting things.

@@antkiller7537Now let us call that point for an individual their brain-shutting point _ξ_ and start extensive studies over it. To solve for an individual's _ξ,_ we must find the limit for the function 𝑓: ℝ→ℝ, 𝑓(𝑥)= 𝑥 as 𝑥 approaches 0, and where 𝑥 is the brain's capacity to work under normal circumstances. We can assume the limit is 0, but to prove that rigorously let us use the ε-δ method: Let ε > 0. We must prove that |𝑓(𝑥) - 𝑓(0)| < ε holds for some value of δ, as 0 < |𝑥 - 0| < δ. Suppose we pick δ = ε. Then |𝑓(𝑥) - 𝑓(0)| = |𝑥 - 0| < δ = ε and the statement has been found to be true. Now that we know the limit as 𝑥 approaches 0 is 0, we can use Newron's second law of Brain Capacity, which states _ξ_ = _m_ + _a,_ where _a_ is the point at which the individual's brains collapse to a singularity (the limit we just proved) and _m_ is the amount of brainpower needed to lose after the brain-shutting point to reach _a._ Empirically it has been shown that _m_ can accurately be calculated with _m_ = 𝐿/4 where 𝐿 is a value in the interval [0.8, 1.2] that has to be measured separately for every individual, because it represents the individual differences in brain function. On average it has been shown _L_ = 1, so for the layman it can be said _ξ_ = 1/4 + a, so _ξ_ = 1/4 + 0 = 1/4. _I sure hope you don't reach your brain-shutting point reading this._

Always loved how this 24 minute sm64 PhD dissertation borders on absurdist comedy. He definitely made it out of genuine passion but also he knew/knows exactly what he's doing
IMO this is a sign of someone being passionate about something. The question isn’t why is pannen good at explaining this, it’s why people who whose job is explaining concepts are so bad at it.
Visual animations help a lot. It also helps that he made up bullsit terminology that makes sense, a little bit like how many programming concepts are named after reductionist concepts that are completely unrelated.* If he just said that "Mario's position is just always being checked in the original area because how the code divides that way" and named each area a division and displayed it by just representing the current divisions, it'd make less sense to an everyman. Parralel universes are more enjoyable and engaging tho, and by placing a faded out version of the map in each grid, you get the idea, even if your actual knowledge may be too low to understand what is actually happening. * An example what I mean by programming concepts. A stack is a data structure where you insert information onto data, with each new bit of data representing the new access point and linking to the previous placed data. As there is no designation of an index, you cant read any information except the last placed information. You probably barely understood that. If I say its like stack of plates with each plate being a piece of data. You place each plate on top of the previous top one, and cant take out lower ones without pulling the plates one by one above it off first. That's far simplier.
Well I know that; that goes without saying. The only situation where I could remotely find releasing A being useful is if Mario has the Wing Cap in midair (or is twirling) but needs to fall faster to save time for something and needs to actually *press* A again to do some action immediately afterwards. I imagine during the eventual full-game ABC speedrun (which will probably be a thing), there might be a situation where this might happen, but somehow I doubt any route Pannen would plan would include a situation like this.
Unfortunately that tenacity came at a price. Apparently, the creator went through a period of terrible mental and emotional turmoil to finish it. He explains this in the following FAQ, which also goes extremely in depth about his struggles. docs.google.com/document/d/1K4OTAyampX1CueKyZUIunz0yIUYd3ldlQxv37oaySgs/mobilebasic

24 minutes long. Near perfect amount of time for a half hour Discovery Channel episode. If we put cut away interviews with pannek the believer and Henry the doubter we could turn it into an hour special.
The test on Mario physics, why yes! Now let's play Wing Mario Over The Rainbow, but first, we need to talk about half-A presses and parallel universes.
after the success of this video, pannenkoek released a statement on why he didn't want to keep making commentated videos in this style, and one of the key reasons given was that, since the ABC route is constantly being improved, any video made on a strategy currently being used would almost invariably become obsolete, and the time and effort put into making a commentated video would be significantly lessened in value well, today it finally happened, just as pannenkoek said it would. a new strat has been developed for this star that almost completely invalidates everything shown in this video. PU movement isn't utilised at all, meaning that everything from around 8 minutes and onward in this video is now irrelevant to how the star is obtained. the scuttlebug raising is different, meaning that the reason for doing it the way as shown and explained in the video is also no longer true. the star isn't even x0.5A anymore - it's x0A now, so not even the explanation of what half an a press isn't really relevant the new strat is great btw, and you should definitely check it out on pannenkoek's second channel, but yeah. while this video still has entertainment value in its own right, almost nothing said in this video is relevant to how this star is collected now
Not only that but the immortality of this particular moment in time in history is like when historical reenactors and thespians master sword duelling or charioteering. Though it won't come up in formal high competition ever again, if you yourself can learn the specific trick of Watch for Rolling Rocks in 0.5 A Presses through QPU alignment and Scuttlebug Raising, it makes you as cool as Josh Brolin putting on a performance as Thanos the Mad Titan. Thanos isn't the most interesting character anymore but that ONE storyline was so Epic that respect and street cred can be gained for collecting the Infinity Stones yourself even if Infinity Stones arent the best plan anymore. :) Like how Hayden Christensen would have been an idiot to turn down the chance to play Darth Vader and Samuel Jackson jumped at the chance to play Master Motherfucker. The Jedi philosophy is not the most profound. But COME ON! LIGHTSABERS! :D
all jokes aside, this video did an incredible job at explain things that could be complicated. anyone who actually pays attention and cares enough will understand it. so well done panen, but when you start talking about parallel universes in video games and tbuilding speed up for 25 hours, its not surprising it has become a joke
by adjusting the angle or having a little more that the sync speed, he can pretty much teleport to any part of the course as long as its the same vertical level, letting him get to places you'd need to jump to get to or to use slopes that are the same vertical level but not next to each other so he cant just move from one to the other
the speed just goes down on its own and he decides to move by using the control stick like normal edit: actually as lukutor pointed out moving isnt as simple as controlling it. mario will always move when hes got speed unless it will make him go out of bounds. so he just angles mario into the out of bounds until hes ready to move
Another thing is, he needs to make sure he doesn't accidentally move on the QPU grid when he doesn't want to. Mario tries to move on every frame when he has speed, so as soon as his de facto speed and alignment match up, Mario will move whether the player wants to or not. So he turns Mario into the correct position only when he's ready to move. However, as soon as he's done moving, he needs to be aware of the new slope that he's on. If he's on the same angled slope as before, his de facto speed will probably still match the QPU grid. He needs to turn Mario on the very next frame, or he'll most likely continue moving along the QPU grid when he doesn't want to. This is actually probably easier to manage if he moves onto a differently angled slope, as the de facto speed of the new slope will most likely not match up to the QPU grid anymore. But he only needs to make sure the first quarter step for the next frame won't align, because if the first step doesn't work, the rest are cancelled.
Lexcal I believe it's to get to bounce on that Scuttlebug. When he enters the room the Scuttlebug activates so, as he mentioned, he only has a handful of frames to bounce on it and reach the star. Thus, he needs a lot of speed without pressing A and this Hyper Speed Walking slope is the only one it can give him that. At that point he just create the PU route to reach both elevators and the Scuttlebug on the Original Map. Pretty crazy, I know. I understand the video more and more everytime I watch it. It also helps I'm studying Programming now
sad but this shit happened to me in first year uni a few years ago. project64 and snes simulator was all I could play on my shitty pentium 2 processor and ddr2 ram
If we're looking at the previously established convention that one unit in the game is modeled to be one centimeter in real life, we're looking at 479000 units / frame = 479000 cm / (1/30 s) = 4790*30 m/s = 143700 m/s = 143.7 km/s (= 89.3 mi/s) here. Still only 0.00048 c, but a very impressive Mach 422 indeed.
This is an amazing video dude, extremely well put together and easy to understand. it really sucks that it turned into a negative experience for you, though I truly hope you are able to realise that 99% of people, when making jokes about this video, are absolutely not making fun of you. 'but first let's talk about parallel universes' is funny not because of you, but because it summarises the absurd contrast between what one typically thinks of when they hear of a Mario game and the lengths one must go to for some of these exploits. “Now we can finally play the game”
My brain just shutted off at around 15 minutes. Too smart for me
@@antkiller7537Now let us call that point for an individual their brain-shutting point _ξ_ and start extensive studies over it.
To solve for an individual's _ξ,_ we must find the limit for the function 𝑓: ℝ→ℝ, 𝑓(𝑥)= 𝑥 as 𝑥 approaches 0, and where 𝑥 is the brain's capacity to work under normal circumstances.
We can assume the limit is 0, but to prove that rigorously let us use the ε-δ method:
Let ε > 0.

It will always blow my mind how we got one of the greatest videos on UA-cam simply because people don't read the description section.
Well the reason we don’t is that it is usually just a list of links to other sites, rather than an actual description
@@algotkristoffersson15 I feel like video descriptions were much better back in the day. By back in the day I mean "rate this video five stars" back in the day. Now it's, as you said, a dumping ground for social media links. Also, UA-cam's page layout obfuscates the fact that the description even exists. yes

Since this video was posted, have there been any newly discovered instances where releasing A is actually useful?
Nope. And I doubt releasing A will ever be useful
Well releasing A rids the effects of holding A and allows A to be pressed again
Well I know that; that goes without saying.
The only situation where I could remotely find releasing A being useful is if Mario has the Wing Cap in midair (or is twirling) but needs to fall faster to save time for something and needs to actually *press* A again to do some action immediately afterwards. I imagine during the eventual full-game ABC speedrun (which will probably be a thing), there might be a situation where this might happen, but somehow I doubt any route Pannen would plan would include a situation like this.

after the success of this video, pannenkoek released a statement on why he didn't want to keep making commentated videos in this style, and one of the key reasons given was that, since the ABC route is constantly being improved, any video made on a strategy currently being used would almost invariably become obsolete, and the time and effort put into making a commentated video would be significantly lessened in value
well, today it finally happened, just as pannenkoek said it would. a new strat has been developed for this star that almost completely invalidates everything shown in this video. PU movement isn't utilised at all, meaning that everything from around 8 minutes and onward in this video is now irrelevant to how the star is obtained. the scuttlebug raising is different, meaning that the reason for doing it the way as shown and explained in the video is also no longer true. the star isn't even x0.5A anymore - it's x0A now, so not even the explanation of what half an a press isn't really relevant
the new strat is great btw, and you should definitely check it out on pannenkoek's second channel, but yeah. while this video still has entertainment value in its own right, almost nothing said in this video is relevant to how this star is collected now
Perhaps, but it still does an excellent job explaining ways in which the game's mechanics can be manipulated.
Second Channel!? What?!
It is still, and shall forever be, relevant to the historiography.
Like how Hayden Christensen would have been an idiot to turn down the chance to play Darth Vader and Samuel Jackson jumped at the chance to play Master Motherfucker.
The Jedi philosophy is not the most profound.
But COME ON! LIGHTSABERS! :D
it's still an incredibly well made video with kickass analysis. who cares if its a "relevant" route.
all jokes aside, this video did an incredible job at explain things that could be complicated. anyone who actually pays attention and cares enough will understand it. so well done panen, but when you start talking about parallel universes in video games and tbuilding speed up for 25 hours, its not surprising it has become a joke
by adjusting the angle or having a little more that the sync speed, he can pretty much teleport to any part of the course as long as its the same vertical level, letting him get to places you'd need to jump to get to or to use slopes that are the same vertical level but not next to each other so he cant just move from one to the other
Do you know how he controls the loss of speed/deciding to move?
the speed just goes down on its own and he decides to move by using the control stick like normal
edit: actually as lukutor pointed out moving isnt as simple as controlling it. mario will always move when hes got speed unless it will make him go out of bounds. so he just angles mario into the out of bounds until hes ready to move

Super Mario 64 is still a video game, right?
It's a complex stream of universes
+Shazbot Chan The cartridge is home to an infinite amount of parallel universes set on a grid that were NEVER MEANT TO INTERACT
Yep. A video game about a fat plumber travelling through the multiverse just to not jump once. :P

If we're looking at the previously established convention that one unit in the game is modeled to be one centimeter in real life, we're looking at
479000 units / frame
= 479000 cm / (1/30 s)
= 4790*30 m/s = 143700 m/s = 143.7 km/s (= 89.3 mi/s) here.

the biggest meme of 2016 is about mario running for 12 hours to jump into parallel universes.
We have reached a new level of memeing.

I know a lot of people probably don't understand why you are sad, but as someone who has gone through mental disease I can totally understand. You should only be proud of this video, the high number of likes proves that. We unironically love it, it's super interesting and unique.
exactly my thoughts!
I agree a 100% with this comment.
I come back to this video from time to time just to amaze myself because that's what your hard work and big brain cause on me.
I *REALLY* enjoy and respect you and your work.
Hope you get better, man.
All the love in the world ❤️

@Scoot The Burbs For life Pannen didnt like this video becoming a meme after working really, and i mean really hard on it. He thinks its not taken seriously
Aw jeez I didn't know the creator feels hurt by the memes. This concept is so interesting. Whenever someone says "but first let's talk about parallel universes," to me it's like when the music changes in a Vsauce video. Stuff's about to get real. Usually the video people are posting the meme on isn't that awesome. Or maybe it is sometimes, but to me it's always primarily referring back to this awesome mind blowing video. Sploof Mcsterra referred to relating to mental illness, so I'll throw in there too that I've got that usual suite of depression/anxiety/panic. I can relate to being overwhelmingly hurt by people online, so if you happen to read this, know you've got support. We like you. We know how smart you are.

I swear, there are college courses that don't break down their subject this much and go into so much incredible detail...
Anthony McDevitt yeah, this is basically a research paper.
I don't think you understand what your average college classes are for.
Just go into a hard science/ engineering or math and you will quickly see how deep shit goes. You could study divisibility for a week in number theory or prime numbers literally forever.
Ok... So what? That has nothing to do with what I said. I'm sure that there are many, if not most classes that are far more detailed and complex than this.
I does have everything to do with what you said, and now you are backtracking from your idiotic statement.
op I don't know if you read comments anymore but if you do, I hope you know that this video is one of the biggest inspirations to me as someone who hopes to be a proper scientist someday. The hardest part of anything for me is figuring out how to explain weird concepts in an engaging way, and the way you explain this run is so beautiful and works so well with the visuals... I aspire to be this skilled at communication one day. hope you are doing well!

I noticed Henry's comments been deleted!?
Man I’m so sad that pannenkoek doesn’t like that so many memes came from this video, it’s just so... lovable. I have so much respect for everything that he’s done, and the explanation of all of his insane movement all in the name of saving an A press is incredible. The explanation is so easily digestible for almost all of it, and it adds SO MUCH to what people think of for Mario 64.
The fact that Mario and his Backwards Long Jump and parallel universal warping shenanigans is almost part of his unofficial lore solely because of this video is inspiring.
Pannenkoek, thank you so much for this. I know you may feel like the memes went too far, but trust me, it was all in good faith and respect for your efforts in this video. This video has given the Internet so much wonderful content to play with and have make people happy. We love you and wish to hear more of your wonderful explanations. :)

No matter how many colleges you get accepted into, there will always be someone else who found out how to beat an SM64 level in only half an A press.
Dead GamΞr what the hell did I just watch? Infinite speed? QpUs PU checks, 12 hours? De facto speed and relative speed, this is basically sliding through dimensions then reappearing in the default universe.
now the entire game is finished in 0 A presses
I think part of the reason this went so viral is that pannen never mentions out loud in the video that it’s a TAS, just in the description, assuming that people who watched would understand that this was a TAS only sequence of tricks. But people started watching it who didn’t know about TAS, so they had the mental image of some guy with frame-perfect reaction time holding a n64 controller in front of a tv for 12 hours building up QPU de facto speed which is indeed a very funny mental image
This guy just proved that Mario is actually faster than Sonic

Games can be fun but shouldn't be everything. Have you ever lied even once, stolen anything, used God’s name in vain, looked with lust or worse sexual sins? Then you’re not a good person in God’s eyes and in danger of the judgement of God which will send you to hell (a terrible place of pain and sadness FOREVER & EVER & EVER & EVER….). Remember God is the Holiest such that one small lie will induce his severe wrath. Good news is Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead so that you may receive forgiveness of AALL YOUR SINS (No matter how bad or how many). But you aren’t forgiven unless you REPENT OF YOUR SINS & BELIEVE IN JESUS AS YOUR GOD (repentance means turning from sin and doing your absolute best not to do it again, also ask Jesus to rid you of addictions that you’re struggling to shake away-James 4:7). God has blessed us with Great food to eat (kings in the past don’t eat like we do today), shelter, freedoms, fun, medicine, pets to enjoy their company, friends, nice music to listen to and many more things to enjoy. Yet we don’t give him thanks, blaspheme his HOLY name etc God wants to give the free gift of eternal life (9999999999999999999999999… years of extreme happiness) but we need to humble ourselves and turn from our wicked way. Believe in Jesus (God wants to have a relationship with you-like a father and his children). A brilliant mind, no doubt.
The awnser to that, we need to talk Parallel Universe
If the guy never makes another commentated video, he's still made his contribution to the world. This is absolutely the peak of presenting information to a lay audience. I had zero interest in speed running or anything related until I watched this video, and it changed that. When I'm putting together a presentation, I think back on this video to help guide my work.
How would he? Teaching isn't just rambling on endlessly for 30 minutes. How does he react to a question, or a misconception a student has?
