The Juan Soto Nationals may be a streaky team, but Juan Soto is perhaps the most consistent man in baseball. The 20 year old rocketed into the majors last year and immediately became one of the best hitters in baseball. In this episode of Baseball Bits, an MLB video essay series presented by Foolish Baseball, we'll be talking about Juan Soto minors days, as well as 2018, the Juan Soto rookie year. Heck, we even rewind all the way back to the amateur Juan Soto days when he was doing showcases.
The Washington Nationals are lucky to have a player of this talent, especially after the departure of Bryce Harper. We'll also talk about Trout as we find the MLB best rookie seasons. This also functions as a discussion of the best 19 year olds in MLB, and best teenagers in MLB. You can't bring up Juan Soto without having a conversation about the best young hitters in the league.
So while we'll talk about young Bryce Harper and young Mike Trout, we'll also talk about Ty Cobb, Mel Ott, and Tony Conigliaro for added historical context.
We'll also see how Juan Soto rocketed through the minor leagues in 2018. That Juan Soto 2018 is certainly a season to remember, but equally impressive is Juan Soto 2019.
The biggest takeaway is that Soto's OBP is elite, and that's what sets him apart. He is the Dominican god of walks. Juan Soto walks 15-16% of the time, which is pretty darn rare.

The better question is, has Juan Soto ever done anything bad?
@@noah_that_bills_fan1613 field?
Juan Soto might be the most underrated player in the game right now. The dude's a superstar and literally no one talks about him.
I would tend to agree. Has gotten some attention with his recent hot streak, but he's historically good.
Scott Brady Anthony Rendon, too. I dunno if it's just the market or something else, but this team has more than a fair share of studs...
@@sorenkoford8015 I would agree on Rendon as well. I think both he and Soto have largely been overshadowed by contemporaries (Arenado for Rendon, Acuna for Soto) who are perceived to be better (somewhat incorrectly).
@@ScottieBoy99902 I'd disagree with the idea of incorrect perception. Arenado's perhaps the greatest defensive/offensive consistent third basement of the decade. He reeks of Scott Rolen in his prime, which sucks given his being mired with the middling Rockies. Acuna, like Soto, hasn't had time to prove himself good or bad, but in just a couple seasons, he's not human with his production.
@@DakodaOK rendon is probably a better hitter than arenado when you account for the fact that arenado plays in coors. In terms of defense yeah arenado's probably the best in the game but why does that mean rendon gets no attention? Rendon's also an excellent defender btw

Are we ignoring when Soto hit a MLB home run before his debut
I almost put that in there! But it seemed like a weird tangent.
Foolish Baseball isn’t weirdness what this video is about though?
How?
@@michaelclarkj As Nats fan I can't remember the exact detail or the team we played against. But I believe we started the game and he hit a home-run then it rain out while the game was tied. It rain out 2 or 3 days in a row if I recall and the game got suspended until the next time the teams played again... which was like 2 or 3 weeks away. So technically, that game was his first but it hadn't been completed in the books yet.
It was a game against the Yankees that started before his debut and was suspended due to rain. When the game resumed a few weeks later, he had made his debut, and hit a home run in a game that was still technically before his debut.
Loved the video. Another thing that attests to how unusual he is for a 20 year old: he's done a fantastic job of addressing his weaknesses. After last season, opponents realized that if he's thrown a fastball he will crush it, and if he's thrown an offspeed pitch outside the zone he'll lay off. So he started seeing a ton of offspeed pitches in the zone this season and he really struggled at the beginning. But he adjusted and now his numbers are back up to where they were last year. His defense has also improved a ton over the past couple of months. I don't think the defensive stats have caught up yet, but if you watch the Nats every day it's obvious how much he's improved. But honestly, as cheesey as it sounds, my favorite thing about him is how much fun he has and that he's always smiling.
Thanks for the analysis. Perhaps Soto will become a Trout-ian player in that he is constantly able to address whatever weaknesses he may have.
His defense improvements are a testament to Gerardo Parra .

April 2021 Juan Soto update: he had a 217 OPS+ in the Covid-shortened 2020 season (With an OBP of .490) which is eerily similar to Ted Williams' production in his age 22 and 23 seasons. He still makes no sense. And it is glorious.

Soto might not have the physical gifts that Harper and Trout and Tatis do, but he makes up for it by just being a goddamn genius baseball player.
The numbers say that he has superior gifts to Harper, and Soto's defense has improved quite a bit in a short amount of time. Harper only average on defense anyway. And barring a Cardinals miracle, Soto beating them all to a World Series. So much for comparisons.
Soto physically is special. Please
Perhaps he’s tatis big brain edition
Juan looks like he's swinging in slow motion. I'm glad they fast tracked him through minors so that some overzealous swing coach didn't screw up that beautiful swing.

Why aren't we talking about Soto more?
Simple. MLB does a God awful job of promoting their stars.
Adam Hupp it’s simple, no big market means mlb won’t market their stars. that’s why guys like soto and the entire rays roster (to name a few) don’t get any hype. the only exception is yelich
Nah. As much as I love trout and Soto, they’re a bit boring. Incredible players, but they’re so good they’re almost robots.
Harper, Tatis, Vlad Jr all play with an ego and persona.
Some thing even fishy about umpires in big games. In final game in 2012 playoff between Nats and Cards , Nats reliever keep getting balls called on sure strikes .Cards came back and won.I believe Nats would have.beaten Giants and gone to WS. Storen just needed One Strike!
There is talk on umps and referees in basketball and football favoring big market areas. And video proof.
LOL...and don't win. At least not yet. Soto headed for WS.
Like when it's a Sunday night, and teams like the Rays and Nats are facing each other, both vying for a division title, but ESPN puts a game on featuring either the Yankees or Mets playing a team that is going nowhere. And in the Mets case, they are most likely going nowhere as well. ESPN is a do-nothing organization when it comes to promoting baseball nationally. They think the boundaries of baseball extend from New York to Boston only. Year after year, it's so sickening. We need another all-sports network.

Finally someone is talking about this kid. I'm a nats fan so I watch him all the time. The discipline with this kid is unreal... so many young players just want to mash the ball and strike out a ton (Javy Baez, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Pete Alonso, Javy Baez). His knowledge of the strike zone is absolutely unreal for a player this age. The sky is the limit for this kid!

Gonna have to ignore the Nats for a while or people will think I'm biased, despite being a Braves fan.
Foolish Baseball But then how can you make a video on how underrated Anthony Rendon is?
The best part is that soto is improving in every area arm, defense, base running, hitting slow pitches and more power, that's pretty good to me
Juan Soto in 2021: 7.1 rWAR, 175 OPS+, made his first All-Star team, Silver Slugger, second in MVP voting, finished with the most walks and best OBP in the majors, 4 defensive runs saved.
Talk about a video that is aging like a fine wine.
Imo you left out the best part.
He had 157 hits.
But he had 145 walks, he's almost walking more than he hits.
2024 update: he's playing in the Bronx now after a holiday in San Diego, and he's still doing Juan Soto things. He's still leading the league in walks - 80 BBs in 95 games - he's still walking more than he strikes out (70 SOs) he's mashing homers in Yankee Stadium's lefty-friendly dimensions (23 HRs), his OPS+ is 179 and his OPS is currently over 1.000. He's one of only three players in the majors with an OPS of 1.000 or better, and the leader in that category is his teammate, Aaron Judge (Ohtani is the other). And he's currently having his best fielding season of his career - Statcast has him at +4 fielding run value (82nd percentile) and +1 outs above average (64th percentile).
And he has 33.8 career bWAR through his age-25 season. Yup, Soto still doesn't make sense.
As Harold Reynolds said on MLB Tonight last night, "He reminds me of a Rod Carew or Tony Gwynn with power".
RiverCatsGaming Those guys didn’t walk as much- Harold is a dope.
@@Sebadiah23 If you look at the macro stats only, you may have a point, but Soto's approach at the plate - especially with two strikes - Is very reminiscent of those guys. Reynolds actually watches the game, and doesn't just look at a stat block to make a comparison between players.
Brashnir I know you want to pretend I didn’t watch Tony Gwynn play, which is your call, I don’t care, but he never had 83 walks or 100 strikeouts in August, ever, not close, in his 20 years, so his two-strike approach automatically isn’t similar to Soto, and wasn’t pitched to in a similar way, at all. Pitchers didn’t fear his power, because he had none, so he’d ultimately keep being fed hittable strikes, so he would rarely strike out. At-bats nearly always ended with a ball in play. With Soto, on the other hand, pitchers ultimately want him to chase a ball out of the zone to induce a strikeout, or take a pitch on the corner for strike three. If he doesn’t chase, he walks. Unless you are just referring to fouling off borderline pitches in the middle of an at-bat waiting for a better pitch, fine, but nothing about what matters most( the pitch that ends the at-bat), is similar to Tony Gwynn, and never will be.
@@Brashnir Soto is a much different player than Carew and Gwynn. Carew and Gwynn are both good defenders with speed, Soto is not. Harold's comparisons aren't that great either- in 2016 he said Kris Bryant was better than Mike Trout, and just this draft he compared CJ Abrams to Jarrod Dyson(two completely different players).
@@RiverCatsGaming Keep playing spreadsheet baseball.

I’m sure you’re aware of his struggles since becoming a padre. Did he have slump like this in Washington ?
@@jonny-dp2qr Not really. He was amazing for nearly his entire time in DC. In 2022 his production did fall a bit over prior seasons but he still had over a .400 OBP and nearly a .900 OPS that season before he was traded to SD so it’s hard to say he ever really struggled during his time in DC.
@@tomw485 that’s what I thought. Seems like everyone who comes over to the padres regresses for some reason. Thanks for the insight
@@jonny-dp2qr Yeah I hate to see the guy struggle even with a different team. I have to think this is temporary though. He is just far too talented not to figure it out. Sometimes I think when guys have so much success at such a young age the expectations get out of control and the pressure gets to them.
