Thanks for the shout out Roger 👍 Unlucky with the profit, but interesting to see it come to life after heating it. I was thinking the washers weren't factory, and the helpful comments confirm this, and the reason why they were there. Thanks again for another entertaining fun, well edited video. Looking forward to more of them :-)

Hi thanks Vince. You are completely correct about those washers not been original, although I didn't know it at the time as this was my first ever 360. I don't know if whoever originally did the mod was attempting to fix a problem or avoid one, but common opinion is that their fix and indeed my "fix" would only ever be temporary. Although opinion on a longer term solution varies. Thanks for the support. Feeling the love here and I appreciate it. Roger (AKA Retrotech Repair)

You had a close shave there. I've seen 360s which are just plain bomb sites in regards the nature of the faults, very often chip failures. Glad I bought a few working spares while they were dirt cheap as it looks a battle just penetrating them. But still, they're very versatile. I'm happy to use mine as HD-DVD players with some of the best DVD fidelity I've ever seen through VGA. You can use it as a guitar preamp with lots of lovely tones like the Queen one, thanks to the Rocksmith game. And you can also use the Band Hero Stratocaster controller as a real instrument too, though plugged in the PC as well as using the sequencer in Rock Revolution.

Really great video and what you might not know is that the Software Version or ‘Dashboard’ Version on this console, is actually the NXE update which is quite old.
The consoles got this update in Late 2008 and then another update came somewhere in 2010.
What I’m saying is that the console you fixed had a rare dashboard on it as when you update, you can’t downgrade it back without modding the console.
Not being updated since 2008-2009 means it must have been broken for the best part of a decade!
Cool that you fixed it, even if only relatively temporary.

I'll be honest, as you turned on the Xbox 360, I noticed the Red Ring of Death, along with of course the E74 error. At this point I was groaning and shaking my head. It's one of the reasons why I really tend to stay far away from older model Xbox 360s; they Red Ring often and they don't last. The Slim model by comparison(Xbox 360 S) has much better cooling, more USB ports, and even built in Wi-Fi while lasting far longer. I very strongly believe that the Xbox 360 Slim is just an objectively better model, especially if you're looking to buy a good condition working Xbox 360. It's not to say the original models are horrible by any means, but they can often be notoriously unreliable and just lacking features compared to newer models.

I've been subscribing to your channel for some time now, but this is the first time I'm commenting. Great job on the repair, you do keep things entertaining, and it's awesome you spend time (and money!) to repair old stuff so it can get renewed life. I'm impressed you managed to disassemble the XBOX without using a guide, they can be a real bitch to get apart! As to the XBOX itself -- only the first few revisions had notorious overheating issues. This is not one of those -- it can be seen by the size of the heat sink -- however, the screws and washers mounting it in place is not from the OEM, and a lot of refurbished XBOX 360s had this modification done to them, increasing the risk of warping and thus damage. To anyone interested -- MrMario did a video talking about this a couple years ago, and he talks about the OEM mount at approx. the time in the video link (ua-cam.com/video/jIAcYDxSFSg/v-deo.html ), and some more about the screws-and-washers modification a couple minutes later.
Anyway (sorry for the long rant), I hope you keep making great videos and fixing old stuff!

Normally there are no washers in the Xbox and the heatsinks are held by the "X-clamp". I think what we can see here is some kind of "X-clamp fix kit". I would question whether it was worth to be applied when the Xbox still ended up with the same red ring of death.
Anyways, the question is how long this repair will last :) The first Xbox with E74 Xbox I have tried to fix ended up with a short after the reflow however I have managed to fix an Xbox 360 slim by reflowing the "XCGPU". It was working fine for weeks until I have thrown a CPU/GPU intense game at it (Halo Wars) and with many units on screen, it froze and ended up with the red dot of death again. I did a second reflow which "fixed" it again but playing the same game kills it in 30 minutes...so I came to the conclusion that in some cases, it is a faulty chip rather than a broken solder joint and reflowing is only a temporary fix. I hope you will have more luck though! :) Keep posting these videos!

Some consoles were lucky and got a GPU from a second Vendor in Korea and those rarely fail. This horrible bolt mod should be undone. Great job and well done on the fix. Pity you made a loss but if you enjoy what you're at and get that great feeling when you manage to get the "unfixable" working, then that's a profit in itself. Keep up the good work ;)

@@RetroTechRepair I had a broken water pipe do a little damage in the part of the basement I was installed in in January (my own fault really, it was an accident waiting to happen). So I moved to a lower part, away from the water pipes and built myself a little studio and a small work area for repairing and working on boards. It's not quite finished yet, but it is servicable. There are two ways of looking at it I suppose, a happy accident or "Needs must when the Devil vomits in your kettle" as Edmund Blackadder would say ;)

Unfortunately with these sorts of fixes, they tend to be very short term. In past experience with the xbox360s I've worked on, if you actually drench behind both CPU and GPU with liquid flux before heating, you get a few more months. Reballing with leaded solder is better but obviously a lot more work.

Thanks Mark I am very new to this so I was happy to get it going at all but I understand its probably not a forever fix. I didn't even realize the washers weren't factory although it makes perfect sense. I have a long way to go before I attempt reballing but the flux idea is a good one for me to try. One of the other comments suggested the residue on the board could be flux from a previous repair. Very interesting stuff. Thanks so much for your comments I'm learning a lot from this kind of feedback. Cheers!

@@RetroTechRepair No problem! Another amusing thing to note. On the first revision motherboards, the CPU and GPU corners weren't glued to the motherboard. With trusty airgun in hand I went about heating the CPU and heard a loud pop. On closer inspection, it was so warped that one corner had completely lifted and left the solder pads. Needless to say that became a doner machine ;-). Oh and before I finish blethering on, 6 of the retro handhelds that you've repaired I have boxed in my attic from childhood so I know where I'll be coming should I need tips on repairs ;-). Sorry but the only solution to E 74 is to replace the GPU. What you did just softened the underfill in the GPU and eDRAM does which makes it work for a short period of time again. The 360 is one of the worst in regards to having so many awful fake repair guides and advices from people who have absolutely no idea what they are doing.
Those awful bolts should also be removed and the original Xclamps put back to avoid the board being warped and damaged further.
PS: please don't fan mod, that's another bullshit that does nothing.

Hi Josh. Thanks for your comments. There are some good videos out there on Xbox360 repairs from people who know what they are doing, it looks like your channel is a great example with some nice detailed vids. Unfortunately I am not experienced in these repairs. My aim is to share my experiences more to entertain and encourage than to inform or educate. I didn't even realise the washers weren't original! @@RetroTechRepair Hi,
Thanks for the response. Apologies if my reply seemed hostile, that was not the intention. I wanted to leave this comment just due to the large myths surrounding Xbox 360 repair as I've sadly seen many many consoles destroyed by warping due to heat gunning and bolt modding :(

No worries @@Josh.Davidson I totally understand. I am grateful for channels like your own with detailed How-to's without that the "have a bash gang" like myself would have nowhere to go for reference. Where I need I strongly caveat my vids in the intro and the description. I might even rebrand at some point as I make the vids only for entertainment. I like to think my 360 though not perfect was no worse given what I had available to me. The heat was at least temp controlled, I actually removed washers to avoid flexing the board (hopefully matching the height of the X-clamp that at the time I didn't know existed) clamped it only enough to be secure and ensure good thermal couple. I cleaned the dust from inside the case (not shown in the video as I try to keep to less than half an hour), fixed and cleaned the disc drive. Whoever bought it paid less than I did for the bundle in non-working condition and if the repair didn't last they still have a board that isn't ruined. Anyhow no need to apologise its all good. I'll be sure to check your channel and hope you will stick around here to see a few more clumsy repair attempts. When I try my next 360 I will know where to come for help. I genuinely appreciate your comments. :)

      @@RetroTechRepair Hi,
Thanks for the kind comments and your openness, nice to see. Lots of people have gotten very angry
The height of the board is not the root cause of the flaw, more the way it pulls the corners towards the heatsink causing a bowing in the board. I filmed a little explanation that might help.

@@Josh.Davidson Nah... I'll save getting angry to those selling "kits" of screws and washers, or those modding consoles they paid a lot for. You clearly know your stuff. In fact some of the other comments pointed to your vids, but I deleted a few as they were a bit sarcastic and life's too short. Microsoft make mistakes I am sure like we all do, but I am also sure they wouldn't go to the trouble of casting Xclamps if a few pressed washers would do. I probably didnt show it on the vid, but I also put washers between the heat sink and the board as I didnt like the way the board flexed. I understand it probably wont help, but at least I thought about it. Thanks for checking out my other stuff, its all pretty amateur, but my aim is to entertain! Thanks again
