Never another like Eddie Van Halen. I was lucky enough to see him live a few times in the 70s and 80s. He didn't invent finger tapping but he sure perfected it. He had the best and most genuine smile in Rock. Gone too soon. R.I.P. Sir Edward
Thats awesome!! Im definitely going to be checking out more
100%
Who in evented it?
When i think godfather of finger tap, is Eddie
I loved his cute smile. Amazing guitarist. RIP Eddie 😢
GOAT is always subject to ones opinion. Without a doubt, Eddie is worthy of being in that discussion!!
Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was born in the Netherlands to a Dutch musician (sax & clarinet) father & Indonesian mother. Many people forget he was biracial. The family moved to the US when he was a kid. His middle name is the Dutch version of 'Ludwig', from Ludwig von Beethoven, as his father loved classical music. He & his brother Alex, the Van Halen drummer, were started on classical piano lessons from a young age & Eddie was a very good pianist. He named his son (who is an incredible multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, writer etc & joined Van Halen as the bassist at 16yrs old) Wolfgang Van Halen, after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You can see how much love Eddie had for classical music & it shows in his guitar work, especially in Eruption. He's using parts of classical music & making his guitar sound like classical instruments, it's incredible.
He revolutionized guitar playing. He was one of a kind. There will never be another like him. RIP to Eddie❤
He's playing the riffs and solos from many different Van Halen songs back to back.
Eddie Van Halen Number One 🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
Whenever (usually) he goes from strumming, and switches to double tapping with both hands, he chucks the pick because it is hard to hold that and tap. So he keeps a lot of picks nearby and mounted on the guitar, and mic stands for easy grabbing.
Yes, he did a performance like this in every show.
I literally get a little emotional every time I see this video. You are missed, Ed. RIP.
He made his electric guitar sound like a violin/cello by only using his control knob and left hand...never seen that done before....he's one of one RIP, EVH....he said in an interview that he assembled his first/favorite guitar by using different parts from other guitars that he found/collected and called it 'Frankenstein'....so cool!
He was using a technique known as "volume swelling" for that part of his solo. The hardest part to master is the timing while manipulating the volume dial because electric guitars had a small amount of lag between the time of turning the dial & hearing the actual sounds through the speaker. It's not noticeable unless you're doing it consistently over a period of time, in which a few microseconds of lag with each note played could accumulate to a point where you couldn't miss hearing it. Eddie had to have his timing perfect to *compensate* against the lag time...
First time listening to "Eruption" on the record, we couldn't figure out HOW he was playing this fast. It was only later that we saw him play live what he was actually doing; First ever "finger tapping" technique in a modern rock and roll band. EPIC, RIP!
He throws the pick into the crowd a few times….he doesn’t need it for tapping.”
“Hay-Len” is how we’ve always heard it pronounced.
Seen him 14 times every time was 13 minute solo and killed it every time! KING EDWARD 👑
I myself wouldn't pronounce the world's greatest guitar player. Jimmy Page. Roy Clark, Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy and Edward Van Halen are greats for sure. I adore Eddie. They are all great in different ways.I love them all. I just absolutely loved seeing Eddie play live. I will miss him for the rest of my life.
I will throw three more into that group, Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed and Stevie Ray Vaughn, great guitarist.
When we saw him in 1984, 3rd row at the Forum, I can tell you that cigarette he was smoking was actually massive skunk joint. After he smoked about half he tossed it our way and we all got a taste.
They had been on tour since March 1986 and this was filmed on August 17th 1986. I personally saw this 3 nights in a row at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. There will never be another Eddie, RIP. Another guitar guy you should check out is the purple one himself Prince song purple rain.
It hurts my soul more than you can imagine how such a wonderful artist and person could be taken by a vicious bullshit disease so soon.. Rest In Heaven, Eddie.. you are SO loved.. xo
EVH wrote the soundtrack to the best times of my life. First saw them at the US festival in 83 when I was 15. I’ve wrestled with the fact that I cried more when Edward died than I did when my father passed and my dad and I were very close. RIP king Edward.
He has several picks stuck to his guitar to throw out to the audience- one of his picks is a CHERISHED keepsake.
This solo was from Van Halen's 5150 tour, Live Without A Net, in 1986, performed at their New Haven show. It was their first tour with Sammy Hagar as the lead, and captures Eddie at the height of his powers, showcasing many bits and pieces from the band's first 6 albums but also his amazing ability to improvise. I saw them live 4 times in the mid- to late-80s, including this tour, and this video is th best one I've ever seen to capture the things EVH would do in live shows.
It's worth mentioning, Eddie's son, Wolfgang, is also a phenomenal musician and is worth checking out too.
Eddie and Alex Van Halen did the entire soundtrack for the movie "Twister".
If you look at his guitar, it is covered in picks..so he can throw them..he is the founder of Van Halen....along with his brother, Alex, who is the drummer
The king🎸💣.....miss you Ed❤😔
He was the guitar player on "Beat It".
This solo is most epic. *MORE Can Halen please* 😎
Cathedral is what you’re referring too it’s actually a Bach style piece of music. Eddie was classically trained and his influences are vast. He is the greatest overall in my opinion he changed the game more than anyone else. Only Hendrix a decade earlier had the same kind of impact to guitar.
Maybe classically trained on the piano but Ed was self taught on the strings, couldn't read music at all, all played by ear.
Ya that’s not news he still trained with a classical piano teacher just because he played it all by ear doesn’t mean it didn’t resonate with him. It’s clearly in his music
The part u were asking about was from Mean Streets however he was expanding on it here.
Now check out the G.O.A.T. drummer - Neil Peart Live in Frankfurt.
Amen brother, followed by Working Man live in Cleveland
Eddie was, is and will always be the GOAT!! He started off making his own guitar from guitar body blanks that were rejected and he put the different parts of the guitar from other guitars that he thought were the best and he made the "FRANKENSTRAT". The guitar of the GODS!! He didn't know how to play the guitar but he locked himself in his room until he had become the guitarist of legends and when he came out along with his brother Alex and the music scene had never seen anyone that could play as fast or make the different sounds like he could. He completely changed the way that music was written and especially played. If you listen to their early music it wasn't like anything that anyone had ever heard before. Eddie began playing the piano as a small child but later when he heard the "CLARK 5" he instantly fell in love with rock and roll music. Even when he played the piano he always watched what the other people were playing so he knew what he should be playing. Eddie was a musical savant, prodigy, genius and a musician decades before his time. He could play any style of guitar music andause make it sound like he had created it himself because of the things that he did to make it his own. You should really watch some of his early music and then watch his later music like the song POUNDCAKE. He plays his guitar with an electric drill!! AN ELECTRIC DRILL!!!!!😮😮😮😮
I saw them in '82 while in bootcamp liberty. In Chicago. 😊
"Eruption" as a song was actually Eddie's "finger warm-up exercises" that he would play backstage before they came out on stage. They decided to include it (a little less than 2 minutes) on their first album (simply named "Van Halen") & over time, Eddie would add riffs & lead guitar sequences from other songs they played during their shows. In essence, Eddie playing "Eruption" on stage may not sound the same from one show to another but it always included the core "exercise" that he started with.
Yes, Eddie was throwing picks out into the audience; Personally, from this video I've counted at least three times he distinctly made that tossing motion but there's also plenty of times that the camera was not showing his hands clearly. He's also mastered the "finger tapping" technique so he can still play even without a pick; heck, there's quite a few times we can see that he's playing *only* with his left hand on the fingerboard. Long sequences he played this solo without a pick at all; I'd swear that his calluses must have had calluses on top of their calluses...
Then again, for the Van Halen brothers, (Alex plays the drums) music was an intrinsic part of their lives; Their father was a professional in big band orchestra & their mother taught classical piano, so music was in their souls & they were competent in a number of different instruments...But Alex wound up as drummer here & Eddie on lead guitar.
True story' When eddie wrote this it was only a two and a half minute solo but then his dealer came through right at the very end.
He puts that cigarette on the guitar because it needs it while Eddie plays it.
Saw them in Austin Texas, 1978.
he did it every concert
Randy Rhoads was phenomenal as well just wish he could have made it further into his career
True. Randy was the only one who had you take your eyes off of Eddie.
Whiplashed my neck when I heard Randy and turned to look.
Typically around the middle of every show. I saw them several times in the 80s, he changed his solo up a little from tour to tour, but during a given tour, the solo would be fairly close to the same night after night.
First heard the studio version back in 1978 (I think it was). Much shorter - arguably better for its 'succinctness' - but I guess this is live, so it has to give a bit more. Nobody better than Eddie at this style.
If you ve watched Back to the Future, part of his Eruption solo is featured when Marty is dressed as a "space alien" and waking his "Dad" up with music 🎤🎸
Eddie is one of thee greats! You may also like some ZZTop too 💪🏽
Well you’re right on about the Northern European comment: both Eddy and his brother Alex(drummer) and their family emigrated from Holland when they were young But they grew up in Southern California so they have that vibe. Don’t know if they retained any of the Dutch language. Btw, I have always heard the name pronounced “Van Hay-Len “. Great reaction!
HOW ? EDDIE ! THATS HOW 😉😊
Yes! You should keep going down the Van Halen rabbit hole! Their debut album is considered in the top 5 all time best first albums. The album is just called 'Van Halen', you should check it out. First song on it is 'Running with the Devil', start there!
Never learned to read music. A classic pianist as a kid. Built his own guitars and equipment. Never had petals and the fancy equipment. Did the arrangement and guitar solo for Michael Jacksons, Beat It. For free. There's video of him playing live with Michael. This video was in the 80s, but he was playing pieces of this in the 70s. It's a collection of pieces from different songs they had
Saw him 2 times... absolutely loved both concerts.
EVH masterclass. Great reaction. "Ain't Talkin 'bout Love" "And the Cradle Will Rock" Hot for Teacher" kickass songs you gotta check out.
First time...
You make me feel old.
Not your fault, just how it is.
Good to see young people enjoy the 'old' stuff.
Anytime an artist can make his instrument sound like a different instrument then i would call that genius...
Great reaction man, one of my all time favorite guitar solos, should check out all that remains and there song two weeks, yet agian man, great video
Eddie Van Halen
He was the guitarist on Michael Jackson's Thriller
Could you imagine a side by side guitar solo with SRV. and EVH. 😎
Great reaction! And like you said at the start, there are others. Jimmy was great but sadly gone too soon and Stevie is probably the best blue's guitarist ever but Eddie is the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived! He has patents on the stuff he did with his guitar. Never used pedals! The greatest, RIP Eddie ❤
This is one of the best solos ever! I would love to see Romain Axisa (from the Big Push) could do with it. This is not a written solo...he made it up for every performance
Eddie was asked once, how many sounds can you make on a guitar?? HE answered,.. "All of them"
Eddie had a unique style and sound. He's one of the few guitar players that you can hear and know that it's Eddie Van Halen, and he put his stamp on it. Now that he's gone, if anyone ever sounds like that again, they'll only be copying the Eddie Van Halen sound.
look at the guitar,,,,there's picks glued to it so yes he tosses them.....and he play's tapping on the strings
He did do soundtracks.
You should definitely listen to the real eruption, which is only 2 minutes long and is a composed piece because it caused a tidel wave in the music world when it hit the airways. Back then, you could only hear your favorite artist not see them like it is today, and everybody debated.HOW IS HE DOING IT! 😮
Great reaction, thanks! I would love to see your reaction to Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood live at El Mocambo
🙏Eddie 💔😢
BEING A GUITAR PLAYER IS LIKE AN ATHLETE.....BEFORE I PLAYED GUUTAR I PLAYED FOOTBALL ...1ST STRING CORNERBACK AND 2ND STRING TIGHTEND SO YES ITS A SPORT
Banger 🔥🔥🔥👊🏾
and if I remember correctly he used to make his own guitars.
brother Alex on drums
Thats crazy!
If you watch closely at the start Eddie has like 8 pick holders on his guitar. So he throws one away and grabs another.
Probably the best guitar solo. IMO Jimmy Page is the Goat. He was a pro before Zeppelin and years later at 80 he's still collaborating. Hendrix and Steve Ray Vaughn just passes too soon😢 I saw Steve Ray Vaughn and that man can play 😂❤
@MDreeezy I have to tell you Bro, Eddie VanHalen was the greatest guitarist on our time (RIP), but if you dig what only HE could do - you owe it to yourself to also listen to Joe Satriani and Steve Vai as well. It's all about developing INDIVIDUAL guitaring styles, and forging new paths of creative play by going where none have gone before. Hendrix was the same way in that regard. I'm glad you gifted yourself some Eddie VanHalen! We lost a TRUE legend a few years ago when he joined the other stars in the sky. Maybe his son Wolfie (Wolfgang) will carve a unique & influential path of his own some day.
Eddie also did solo for Michael Jackson's "Beat It" He took nothing for it & refused any credit on the album even. Also that's his brother Alex on the drums who is equally as talented, his single stroke drum rolling was said to be so fast that it couldn't even be duplicated digitally. It really did sound like the roaring of a racecar engine. Listen for his Double kick work at the beginning of "Hot for Teacher" for some more engine sounds as well.
Ahhh....you found one of the top 3 EVER!! Bro....Panama and Hot for teacher are musts by Van Halen.
GOTCHU!!
RIP LEGEND
If you like EVH, you'll probably like SRV. Intense, sincere talent.
The single greatest ever. And you're right about the soundtrack thing. He actually did that, for the movie "Twister"...
SLASH from Guns & Roses! Must check out "November Rain", "Welcome To The Jungle" , "Sweet Child O Mine" and "Patience"...he's the guy with the big black hat and cig hanging out his mouth all the time!
He actually includes a lot of Bach in there; the CLASSICAL of 'classics'. I spotted 'Toccata & Fugue in D minor' at least.
I once knew another heavy metal guitarist who would practice at home with Bach sheet music.
Well, you have just passed your "trial by fire" of the reactor community as far as guitar heroes. I had to chuckle when you said you didn't know guitars could make these sounds, when i KNOW it's about to get REALLY weird in the next few minutes. Son you have no idea what's coming. Looking forward to your facial expression when he goes into the "swells" where he makes it sound like a Cello. Also notice during each segment, the spotlights have different colors.
Check out the song “Mean Street”.
Look at his guitar, and you'll see many picks on 2-sided tape. He just grabs another when needed.
❤❤❤
New Ren Thursday 😁😁
@@MDreeezy 😄😄😜
Love EVH! don’t smoke kids.
This is why Gen X is so cool...~ Grandma oh...check out "Hot For Teacher" by Van Halen...you ain't ready Hon, this stuff would never fly nowadays!
Ok I'll give you another guitarist to check out.. Steve Vai. Bad Horsie. Vevo. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
And another... Joe Satriani. Made of Tears. Vevo.
You will like these guys I'm sure.. and there are many more to introduce you to. That is if you like guitar.... 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
***TALKING GUITAR*** Check out Peter Frampton "Do You Feel LIke I Do" , find title with "talking" in it.
I’d give anyone a like for listening to evh
As drunk as he was.
Joe Satriani is a great guitar player. Just choose the song title that speaks to you. My favorite is a simple one of his; The Crush of Love
He has pics stuck on the guitar so he can grab another one whenever he needs one
What do you think. Kind of good.
If you want a song that rocks hard then check out Big Fat Money. Alex brings huge energy in that song along with Eddie on guitar.
Certainly one of the best solos out there. Just enjoy the mastery.
S.R.V.
Really LOVE THE REACTION!!! Maybe check out NEIL PEART Buddy Rich HONOR????? or TOP FUEL???!!!!!!!!! :) Surprises awaits!! :) ♥AND, or... Victor Wooten bass music????????? :) LOVE TOP FUEL ALWAYS!!! “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
Zed.
A lot of the 'trickery' is actually quite simple [ for a skilled player] on a heavily amplified guitar, so long as you keep below the threshold of feedback.
To get a glimpse into what he's doing, check out an instrument called a 'Chapman Stick', a sort of 12 stringed instrument played with both hands independently, & no pick. " Hammering on" is the loosest description of what he's doing, & is now a standard part of the guitarist's repertoire.
As an aside, Steve Hackett of Genesis was also doing this, but in a much less flashy way.
You just basically contradicted yourself. Sure people can duplicate it... After many years of play. But at the time none of it was easy. Eddie bridged the Gap, Eddie single-handedly brought the 70s into the 80s. You're trying to downplay the credit he deserves. I've been playing since 1970.Eddie was an innovator every bit as much as Jimi Hendrix. They both bridged the Gap into a new sound. There's no way you could say anything otherwise because you're not the one that did it.
it's halen with a long a
Finish the Fucking SOLO!
I think you see why so many voted EVH as the best in your poll and his brother on drums is some badassery, too.
most definitely!!
Prolly not high this band loved the alcohol.
Jump is the most mainstream song on their discography…terrible song to judge them by!
react to let there be rock by ac dc live river plate, Angus Young less technique but more heart is more fun for me.
MIND BLOWING🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Why for the love of god do you all call this his eruption solo from VH Live without a net concert from New Haven Conn in Aug of 86
His (Solo) is a mix of licks and riffs from songs from Spanish Fly,Mean street, Baccalatherium Cathedral and Eruption amongst a few others.
When you look at the list of tracks it only says guitar solo, now if you want to hear Eruption in its entirety then check it out from VHs first album and it's the best 1min and 47 seconds you'll ever hear. It's no fault of yours but everbodys reaction videos label it his Eruption Solo when its not at all. Enjoy this 1 of a kind absolute innovator legend there is no other like 👑 Edward ! Be sure you check out the entire concert it will never disappoint.
By the way I love it when a new generation discovers the magic of EVH and VanHalen and Im a bigger fan of Sammy Hagar era VH than Roth era mostly because Dave was a great frontman but Sammy can actually sing but its just my opinion 🎉🎉
