If you played it
The random standees cost only 1/3 of the specific standees. So if your goal is to get all of them, even with the possibility of getting duplicates, it's cheaper to buy random standees until you have 2/3 of all standees.
Since you can buy 3 random standees for the cost of one specific one, you get more standees for your coins with randoms, as long as buying three randoms will give you more than one new standee on average.

@@mariotheundying first of all, that game has tree sap. It's not an unidentified slimy substance like goo is. Second, Bathaniel mentioned "crawling through" it. In Mario Land 2, it does have similar physics, but it's only real purpose is to help you avoid enemies. In this game it much more closely resembles that which is found in the Yoshi's Island game. Heck, even the Wonder effect resembles one of Yoshi's Island bosses!
